good morning, everyone. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm mike mibach. >> i'm pam cook in for tori campbell. it's tuesday, december 27th. well, the holiday season has turned tragic for one man. kraig debro has more on the man who accidentally killed his son. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we're trying to get more information about what happened. i have calls into the police department as well as the contra costa coroner's office. no i.d.s have been issued as of yet. we're also trying to find out where the man was going when he struck and killed his own child. this happened yesterday early afternoon, there was a small memorial out of pembroke court where it happened. a father was trying to leave

his driveway when he started to back out yesterday around 1:30, he hit his 2-year-old boy. that boy later died at at hospital-- at a hospital. neighbors are speechless. >> we didn't know what no say or how to help or anything. >> it's horrible. i feel so bad. it was not something they meant to happen. sad. i don't know what to say. >> reporter: government numbers say the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 3 and 14 is the result of injuries they receive while on foot or while pedestrians. in fact, in january of this year in -- in oakland, a baby got out of the house. 80% of driveway-related accidents involve children under the age of 4. according to the latest numbers from 2009, child pedestrians are more likely to be injured in driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, vehicles than by any

other place. two-thirds of the children are boys. low-income and urban kids are at a higher risk. again, we're threing to get ahold of the police this morning -- we're trying to get ahold of the police this morning. we hope they will get back to us. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. police in oakland are searching for suspects in an overnight shooting. it happened late last night at 39th and international, not far from the b.a.r.t. station. the male victim was behind the wheel of a red truck when he was shot in the neck. he's expected to survive. police shut down the road looking for suspects and evidence. and a big rig ran over a pedestrian early this morning around 2:00 in the area of masen in avenue and 101 in the of san martin. when authorities arrived on the scene, they found the male

victim already promoneysed dead. the big -- pronounced dade. the vehicle has been taken for forensics. a woman and her two dogs were killed when her home on broadmor caught fire. investigators say 4 valerie rogers died in her bedroom most likely from home inhalation. they also say she did not have working smoke alarms in the home. firefighters recommend that you change the batteries in the smoke detectors in the spring and the fall, when you change your clocks. el, with the sear's holding -- well, the sear's holding company is closing their doors. they say no decisions have been made on which stores will be shut down. the number of employees affected will depend on what

stores are closed. sears will cut inventory on the stores that remain. and the gop candidates are starting a major campaign push in iowa. the dah causes in that -- the caucuses in that state are one week awake. coming up, the new polls and the prediction that one candidate made just this morning. megamillions lotto players are hoping to ring in the new year with a bigger beige account. lorraine blanco is live in hayward where people are buying a fifth for the big draw. and i assume that includes you as well, lorraine. low rain is not -- lorraine is not there yet. she may be buying tickets. meantime, chp is warning drunk drivers to stay off the roads this new year's eve.

highway patrol watched up its maximum program, checkpoints will be posted and extra officers will be out. san francisco's muni is offering free rides starting at 8:00 new year's eve and they will last until 6:00 a.m. on january 1st. free rides on caltrain will start at 11:00 new year's eve and includes train -- include trains leaving the city until 2:15 new year's eve morning. and the santa clara valley transportation authority will have free service between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. new year's day. b.a.r.t. will expand their service until 3:00 a.m. on new year's day. a lot of people like to spend new year's in tahoe. tara says the coast is clear because they've really had no snow. >> reporter: i know.

but they would really -- but three could really use some more. roadways to ha toe looking good right now. right now we're going to take a look at our maps. we have some accidents that we want to show you here. we have a little trifecta, we have a collision, 8 0 southbound at mission boulevard. another at 8 0 boulevard dixon landing road and finally another one at san tomas expressway. be aware of those. the middle one, serious accident. the ambulance is on the scene. 880 near the coliseum, you can see the traffic is slowing there. and 680 near the sunol grade we've seen some backup on the right-hand side of your screen. if we can take a look at the sunol grade. there you go. on the right-hand side we've seen that kind of stop eaund go all morning long. right now, it seems to be okay. we've seen some delays. so be aware of it. let's check in with rosemary.

good morning to you. there's that sunshine up above the cloud deck. moment of us seeing gray skies. there it is. 15 minutes or so to the official sunrise. this low cloud deck, dense fog in the forecast for some of our morning drivers is actually keeping our temperatures way up from what we've seen lately. we are looking at an offshore bris in some cases, calm conditions but just a light offshore breeze and a winnened -- and a wind reported in concord and livermore. this will help to push back the marine layer. we could see late clearing once again. yesterday wasn't so bad by about noontime. most of us had the sunshine with us. between now and then, we have the low crowds around the bay area. we have patchy fog with visibility down to about a quarter mile. napa has reported it. fairfield, parts of the north bay. it's affecting our -- sfo as well. it's impacting some of those flights arriving.

she stays in the race or starts thinking about troping out. right now, it's ron paul, mitt romney and newt gingrich, polling at the top. in just the last hour and a half, mitt romney campaigned in londonary, iowa and sounded humble about how he will fare. >> i'm not exactly sure how this is all gonna work out. but i think i will get the nomination if we do our job right. >> reporter: here's the latest polls, ron paul, 22.3%. romney, 21, pick rememberry is at 12% -- rick perry is at 12%. all of them are looking for new momentum out of iowa this week. alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. a new gallup poll shows mixed numbers for president obama heading into 2012. the daily tracking poll shows more people approve of his job performance than approve.

47% approve, and 45 disapprove. that's a big immovement from november when he hit 38% only. however, only 39% of his handling of the economy. in russia, vladimir putin says he does not need vote fraud to win next year's presidential election. now, putin made the comments earlier today in a meeting with supporters. putin also said the upcoming election must be an honest test of support. massive produces have erupted in russia after accusations of voter fraud involving his russian party. the russian presidential election will take place in march. opposition activists say the syrian army began withdrawing tanks before the team arrived. military forces have founded -- bounded the area with -- pounded the area for days

firefighters came into contact with the modesto boy several days ago while donating toys at the hospital. now those firefighters will hold a fund-raiser for his funeral expenses tonight. that fund lazier starts at fom. lucky supermarkets are taking out ads warning of card skimming. the skimming devices were used at 24 northern california stores. the grocery chain wants customers to carefully check their bank statement for any suspicious activity. the last report from police say more than 500 people were victims. authorities say typically the average theft was $775 per person. the secret service and fbi are investigating but no arrests have been made. a hearing took place in iran today for the former u.s. marine accused of being a cia

spy. iran captured the michigan native earlier this year. his family says he's not a spy and instead entered iran to visit relatives. but state tv in iran says he's confessed twice to working for the cia. no word on the outcome of the hearing. sarah shourd is vee vealing for the -- revealing for the first time why she said thank you to iran after her release. in a new post on the website, shourd said she thanked iran after her release in order to secure the eventual freedom of her fiance, shane bauer, and friend josh fattal. shourd said she knew she would be criticized for thanking te. the two men finally came home to the united states in september after two years in custody. it seems like not everybody is a fan of lady gaga.

she's being sued by her assistant. the woman says she worked with gaga during her last world hour and -- tower and is owed $308,000 for not getting paid for 7700 hours. a representative for gaga says the lawsuit has no merit. and rosemary will have our forecast coming up. one reindeer found his way into a home on new year's -- christmas eve. and traffic is looking good. we'll fauck about the fog and how -- talk about the fog and how it's affecting your traffic.

honda says it's destroying more than 1,000 vehicles. two months ago those vehicles were damaged by floodwater in the thailand plant. honda is just now restoring their factory to resume operations.

they say no parts in those flooded cars will be reused. a new study shows the lasting effects of the cosco busan oil spill. pacific herrings left -- left coated in oil caused problems. pacific herring are the only fish species that are fished commercially in the bay. san francisco airport is on track for a record year. more than 41 million passengers have traveled through store this year and the airport expects to see a 5% increase. many airports across the country are actually seeing few urpassengers. a utah family was expecting santa on christmas eve but they got an unexpected visitor instead. >> it's in the room!

many people are heading back to work this morning after the long christmas weekend. it's time to start thinking about what to do with your christmas tree that may be drying out. allie rasmus is live with more. >> reporter: well, this capacity tree that someone left on the curb in san francisco, is not too dry. it looks prty good. the -- pretty good. the needles are still dry. it's the perfect candidate for recycling. you can see the needles don't have any artificial snow on them. it's less than 5 feet tall. most recycling programs say if your try is 5 feet or taught -- 5 feet or taller, other arrangements must be made. the national christmas tree association says 25 to 30

million trees are sold every year. despite the 4,000 recycling programs across the country, the majority of those trees end up in a landfill. that's what you want to avoid this time of year. san francisco starts picking up christmas tree recycling next week. here's a look at the schedule for oakland. the -- the christmas tree recycling. you can start leaving your tree during the curb from january 2nd to the 13th. in san jose, they start early. they pick it up with your regular recycling starting today and the east bay, pickup is scheduled by danville, walnut creek, the 6th through the 10th. orinda, the following week. now, a little later 0 this morning we'll try to -- later on this morning we'll try to compile all of the details for

a hearing is scheduled for carlos guzman for running a phony dermatology equipment. prosecutors say he has no license to practice medicine and gave at least one woman an infection after a botched liposuction procedure. if convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison. a 23-year-old san jose man is due in court to be charged with the murder of his wife. he's accused in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old valerie kasissas. police found her body in a repoet area of san jose -- remote area of san jose. they found what they believe is the murder men a few weeks later. investigators believe he killed her during an argument. and valerie was the mother to

three young children. medithrive is using a smart car to deliver medications. they say this new service prevents customers from having to get their marijuana illegally. >> they can place an order online or on the phone and hopefully within the next hour or so, you -- or two, you will have somebody bring your medicine to you. lawyers for meddythrive says it has the right to make the deliveries. bicyclists on the golden gate bridge will soon have to share the sidewalk with pedestrians. pedestrian work will begin on the bridge's west talk which is usually reserved for cyclists. the sidewalk will be closed from january 9th through january 31st.

we head into the last week of the year. but good economic news helping things out today. good news from the consumer conference board this morning. the most recent monthly survey shows that consumer confidence has surged to its highest level since april. this puts it since a post recession peak. confidence rose to 62.5. analysts expected just 5 .9. u.s. home price, unfive-day forecastly, are slipping -- . u.s. home prices are slipping. the annual decline is 3.4%. the prices in san francisco are down even further than that for the year. 4.7% since november of last year. many holiday shoppers could not break the habit. ibm says online shopping was

16.4%. a lot of that was done on tablet computers or smartphones. buyers charged 172% more than last year. there's a new way for travelers to earn rewards for flying. now some airports around the country are offering rewards, including frequent flier miles, gift certificates and free parking to travelers. the programs are typically free and tied to the use of a credit card. the gainesville, florida airport holds monthly drawings with prices including prizes to e-readers and pass to an lax. pish

seven people dead. police near fort worth say a man dressed in a santa claus suit fatalitily shot six relative on christmas day and then turned the gun on himself. police say the gunman showed up shortly before the shooting when the family was opening christmas presents. four women, one man and a teenager were killed before the gunman took his own life. north korea is preparing to hold kim jong-il's funeral. his body is expected to be driven through pyongyang. people are still lining up to pay their respects to their deceased leader. he died on december 17th. his son, come jong-un, is the new leader of north korea. the president of yemen can come to the united states for treatment. he could go to a new york hospital later this week. he's recovering from a bomb blast that almost killed him lack in june. the white house has been concerned it would be criticized for providing a safe haven for an arab leader

to the coroner's office and has new information about the victim. kraig? >> reporter: i did speak with the coroner's office. i called the contra costa county coroner's office because the boy lived out here but i'm learning he did not die. he took him to children's hospital in oakland. and because he died in alameda county, that's why the coroner's office there conduct the medical exam. the boy pea name is malcolm norris. he was celebrating the -- the boy's name is mal dom norris. he was celebrating his 2in' birthday, on the 3rd of january. his own father was backing out of the driveway in their home on pembroke in his truck. they didn't know he was standing there and following the incident he was taken to children's hospital. >> horrible. it was not something they meant to happen. it's just sad. i don't know what to say.
