ec in 7th grade. >> bet you never seen a beer heist like this before. how did that chick hide a case of beer up her skirt. >> cutest video of the day right here. ♪ >> a golden groove to the guitar. don't dare stop the music. we're going to begin our show today with the riots that broke out at the mall of america on monday. now this video is just one of the many videos that ended up on the internet. this was unloaded by dan. reports say that about 200 teens and young people were involved in this and according to reports, about 30 officers came in trying to direct people away from the violence. but, people didn't leave the mall. instead, people went to videotape because they wanted to upload them on things like

youtube and world star hip-hop. listen to the beginning of this video. >> the worst [ bleep ]. >> you hear somebody say this is world star hip-hop stuff here. many reports are saying things like this, it's becoming a trend and that social media is feeding it. with this particular riot, some reports said that people thought that little wayne and drake were shopping at this mall. >> so somebody tweets that out or puts it on facebook and friends see it and more people come to check it out and see if it's true? is that what they're suggesting? >> that's right. in fact, i've pulled up the mall of america twitter feed and even they were trying to stop some of these rumors. the mall of america tweeted out like drake's not here. there's discussion out there now that social media makes this kind of the new norm. it's the new thing to do. we saw it on black friday, people recording riots, posting

them on youtube. we saw it with the air jordan release. this past monday at other malls with the after christmas sales. >> i don't think it's fair to say social media is causing the riots. social media is probably causing people to stay there and record the riot. >> they were asked to leave by the police but came back because they wanted to be the one who got the video, who unloaded it to their youtube to get all the hits, you know, get all the views. >> and make a viral video. they want their youtube channel to be the most popular, their link to be passed around on facebook and twitter, all over the place. those red light cameras, we've seen them all over the place. the cameras that snap a shot of you going through the light. sometimes all you see from that is the tickets that you get. >> right. >> american traffic solutions or ats has released a video of ten different collisions and near misses from different intersections in new jersey because they say each year, more

than 100,000 people are injured and hundreds are killed in red light running accidents. so they were putting this video out hopefully to show people what can happen and to deter you from pushing that gas and racing through the yellow. >> almost hit a car and pedestrian. >> oh, boy. >> wow. i can't believe he missed that guy. >> wow. >> and in that one, nick, there were three people completely at a full stop at that light and that person just cruised right on through. >> yeah. >> some of them are pretty minor. some of them are pretty bad accidents. >> oh. >> oh. >> that's a tough one. >> of course, ats believes that these cameras can save lives. stop on red, the light you save could be your own. but there's opposition to these cameras. there are people who say these cameras don't save lives. they actually create more accidents because people see the camera, they jam on the brakes and that creates a lot more rear-end collisions approaching lights. sort of a public safety

announcement from american traffic systems to remind you what can happen if you blow through your light. bud brown lives in kansas and he's being called a hero because of something he did on christmas day that could have turned into tragedy. what you're looking at is a lake outside his house in reno county, kansas, just northwest of saw girls playing on the ice on christmas day. these girls are ages 6 and 7. so he said, i got to go tell these girls to get off the ice. as he's going downstairs, the girls fall through. >> oh. >> and he does what any hero does, he jumps in the water. >> it took me a little while to get to the -- to get to them because the ice was about one inch thick. seemed like it got thicker the closer i got, pounding trying to break the ice. i wasn't thinking about it. i wanted to get them out of there. >> the girls were transported to the hospital for observation. they're going to be okay. kwch caught up with janessa stringer age 7 and she talks

about the ordeal. >> we saw bud and he rescued us. >> what did you learn? >> never go on the ice. >> they came over and thanked me and, of course, they were pretty hysterical and i think they hugged me about five or six times. >> i think i would like to hug this man five or six times. >> you could see how far out those girls were in that wide shot. there's the trail of broken ice you can see how far he had to go through the ice and cold water to get to him. >> he could have got trapped under there as well as nick referred to. it would have been a triple tragedy. he took them to his house, put blankets around them and called 911. >> he is quite a christmas hero. over the christmas weekend norway and sweden were hit by probably one of the strongest storms they've had in the last 30 years. it's called dagmar storm. it's caused a lot of damage, 264,000 homes without power, trees fallen, railways canceled. this video i'm going to show you takes us out to sea and it was

it must be like for the people on the ships. >> i'm glad i'm not out there. one of the poorest areas in the country of colombia just got a pretty major upgrade. it's a shantytown in colombia built into the side of a hillside and they just installed these giant escalators that take the residents from the bottom of the hill to the top of the hill. it's a big deal because before this, the 12,000 residents had to climb hundreds of steps which equalled out to 28 stories. like climbing a 28-story building to get from point a to point b. before it was a 35-minute hike. >> wow. >> guess how -- >> up stairs. >> guess how long it takes them now? six minutes. goes more than 1200 feet. the escalator is free to use for the residents of this town. it costs around $6 million to build and in the future, they're planning on figuring out a way to cover it for inclement

side of a mountain. he's starting to get to the very top. oh, he's moving too. holy cow, he's going fast. >> watch what happens next. >> oh, no. >> doesn't quite make it over the top. his snowmobile goes one way, he goes the other way. he starts rolling down the hill and now he's almost in a race with his snowmobile to the bottom of the mountain. >> under the snowmobile? >> the camera is on his helmet and he's like sliding down the mountain. he drove all the way up. eventually he comes to a stop and you're like okay. >> you think that's the snowmobile but watch. that's the snowmobile on its way down. the snowmobile passes this guy up and eventually he's like i have to go after this thing. he chart starts chasing the snowmobile. that doesn't work. his friend who came from the top of the mountain comes down and he slides in front of him. that doesn't work. these guys continue to chase the thing around where the video ends. i feel like the guys are probably chasing the snowmobile.

red hat is trying to get the hat off. the elastic causing him some problems. >> yeah. this surveillance video is probably one of my biggest fears, something i never want to experience. it is at a game stop in doylestown township, pennsylvania. it shows a man enter this game stop in the dark pants and white hooded sweatshirt. he approaches the cash registers. >> oh. >> did you see what just happened? >> oh, my gosh. >> he stole something. >> did he hand a note to the cashier or anything? >> what happened is this man walked up to the cash register, shows the employee a gun, and says, be quiet, just hand me the money quickly, hurry up, i'll blast you. he gives the kid a white plastic bag, this employee puts the money in the bag. the man then takes it and rushes out of the door. >> what a jerk in a crowded store with kids at a game stop. you're going to have a lot of

kids in that store. >> that kid was three feet from him that was just leaving the register when this happened. >> she was right in front of him at one point. >> another kid over there. >> that takes a lot to do that in broad daylight with all those people in the store. >> isn't it strange that no one else even notices what's going on. you see this guy paying at the other register. the other cashier doesn't seem to notice. >> it was so quick that nobody really had a chance. he was very quiet and i have to give it to the employee that he was able to keep it cool without causing too much drama or even worse. >> he did what he was supposed to do. put the money in the bag, didn't question anything and did it quickly and calmly and got on the phone and called police. >> this happened on monday. one day after christmas when everybody's going back to shop to return and do all their after-christmas errands. police released this video because they're trying to identify this man. if someone does identify him, they want them to call the

doylestown township police department. so hopefully somebody will recognize him and call the police. this past weekend folks in belgium, netherlands, france and germany, thought they may have seen santa's sleigh streaking through the air. people also thought it may have been a meteorite. it was neither of those. it was debris from the russian soyuz rocket that launched dutch astronaut andre kipers into space. look at this. doesn't this look like some huge meteor coming towards the earth? turns out it was one of the stages of the rocket that jettisoned off and started to re-enter the earth's atmosphere. this is on christmas eve people were seeing this streaking through the air. >> cool. >> could you imagine being outside with the kids and seeing that and the wonder and awe on their faces? you said look, up in the sky,

in minneapolis. it shows two robbers going to the apartment of swa vang and nicky. the reason it's short, the second robber comes in, looks up, sees the camera and rips it off the wall. it's one of those $85 surveillance cameras people are buying that e-mails you when someone activated the security camera. they got the e-mail with photos of these robbers inside his home. he immediately called the cops. the cops rushed to his house. but by the time they got there, the robbers were gone. they had left with $17,000 worth of electronics and jewelry. the st. paul police are hoping somebody recognizes one of the two robbers and calls the st. paul police department. >> we're seeing these cameras more and more too. >> the only reason they installed this camera, on black friday, someone broke into one of their neighbor's homes. on christmas day good samaritans did see a box, saw some of the

jewelry and get it back. >> what an awful e-mail. someone has broken into your home and here's pictures of it. >> i want to show you some surveillance footage from china. this is in a busy intersection. you see a high school student on a motorized bicycle coming through an intersection and then look at this truck. >> oh, wow. >> she's crossing an intersection and this very large truck, just slams right into her. you can see the destruction that it leaves behind. look, the bike is torn to shreds. >> did she not see the truck coming? >> according to reports, the truck actually ran a red light. after the impact happened, and you see the shattered mess from this collision, people spring into action. the first people on the scene were actually some sanitation workers. they were street cleaners who came in to help her to guard her from other traffic so no one else hit her. they called the police and the

emergency workers and got them there quickly so that she was rushed to a hospital and she was treated and currently in stable condition, believe it or not. >> i'm not saying she was wrong by any means but you have to be careful. look at this intersection you're trying to cross. if you're just shooting across the middle of anntersecti you have to watch out. >> you have sanitation workers that come into action because they guard her from the bus crossing the intersection and the huge crowd of people that came in to help this little girl. two women who i'm calling fruit activists want to do something very interesting with some trees in the bay area of california. >> we started called the guerrilla grafters. we go around the city grafting fruit trees. >> these two women are tara and buka and they are fruit grafters. what they want to do is graft branchs from fruit trees on to trees that are in public places

in san francisco so they can grow fruit, be given away for free to area residents. >> it's really radical in the way it's a celebration of what nature can do. for us, we're just the catalyst. >> when they graft this limb to the tree, does the limb eventually attach itself or is it always going to have to take? >> the limb does attach itself and it bears fruit as you can see right here. they have a pear. >> it's not exactly legal. >> this is not sanctioned. >> they strongly discourage planting of productive trees on the streets. >> does this create some hybrid fruit? >> it will grow the fruit that stem originally came from, but that tree in whole is going to have a stem of that fruit plus whatever else. >> the tree is just the vehicle for nutrients and water to that branch. >> kind of strange. >> if you grafted an apple limb to a pear tree you don't end up with have a pearapple.
