ktvu cameras go along as bay area deputies fan out making arrests. that's one. top stories at this hour. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. i'm maureen naylor. tori campbell is off today. we begin with breaking news in the east bay, where police chased a wanted parolee onto a college campus. we want to bring you live pictures from newschopper2 overhead in oakland. this is mills college, where

police searched for the suspect for about a half an hour. they found him hiding near some buildings on campus and you can see where that he have come to a stop. >> keep walking! stop! keep your hands above your head and drop to your knees! >> this all began beforeton this morning when police spotted a stolen -- before 10:00 this morning when police spotted a stolen vehicle. the suspect hit at least two vehicles. >> i was trying to hold onto to my -- onto my life with my car. >> at this point, there's no word on the parolee's identity and what he was wanted for. we'll have more for you at 5:00. now to our other top story which we first brought you pictures of on "mornings on 2." this afternoon we have early results on a crackdown on dui

offenders. here's more with lorraine blanco. >> reporter: whoever is arrested is taken here to dublin. now they -- it seems like a drastic approach but police tell us whatever it takes to get dui offenders off the roads. we followed a police team all morning as they knocked on doors and surprised people. they even arrested a lady at the super market where she worked. officers started the sweep before the sun came you. the warrants are being enforced for failing to pay fines, some didn't show up for meetings, others completed to -- others did not submit paperwork. >> if you have warrants, somebody could be knobbing on your door -- knocking on your door. so turn yourself in. >> reporter: the police participating today tell us this is about enforcement and education. >> there's consequences for getting arrested for dui and if you don't take care of what you

need to, everything is a reminder to get people not to drink and drive. >> reporter: the speep goes until 5:00 p.m. this evening. this is part of a larger enforcement before new year's eve. officers started saturation paroles and dui checkpoints back on december 16th. not counting today, they've already made more than 500 dui arrests. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. federal investigators are set to arrive in concord to help determine what caused a plane crash at buchanan airport -- airfield. the light plane missed its intended runway and went down in the field. there was no fuel spill or fire as a result of the landing. firefighters in contra costa county extinguished a one manufacture alarm fire at an apartment complex in wall knit -- one-alarm fire at an apartment complex in walnut

creek. the firefighters responded and had the fire under control within 20 minutes. a bird strike forced a southwest airlines jet to return to sacramento. the plane landed safely av the pilots issued an in-flight emergency. the crew decided to circle back as a precaution. the flight was bound for san bernardino county. no one on board was injured. we're told the plane has minor damage. the flight was rebooked. another southwest jest, 130 feel on board, that flight, the tires blew off. >> you get halfway down the runway and you hear shaking.

and they set the nose back down and said we blew a tire. >> we were going pretty fast. >> passengers used a portable ster wellto get off the -- stairwell to get off the plane. in the last two years, san francisco's district attorney held a news conference to discuss a judge's ruling that an employer and worker should stand trial in the death of a pregnant employee. tara moriarty is live with the details and the judge's ruling just announced. >> reporter: we're here at the printing plant where a pregnant woman was crushed to death by a machine while on the job. the company is located on mariposa in the potrero hill neighborhood. now they will need to answer to criminal charges. >> as she was lean her body in the machine, this platen which rotates to meet the vertical platen suddenly activated and closed on her upper body.

>> reporter: san francisco da george gascon and his team have been working on building this case since january 29th, 2008. that's when the 26-year-old woman was killed while operating a machine at digital prepress international. the company's owner, the 53- year-old man, and the manager, alec young, are being charged with involuntary manslaughter and labor code violations. >> we're very disturbed. that's why the reason we're taking this seriously, not only are we proceeding legally -- this is a catastrophe that's preventable. >> reporter: gascon said the woman was not properly trained on the equipment. a cutting and ka easing machine -- creasing machine crushed her within minutes. the machine lacked safety device us. she was working at the company for three years. she was four months wheg frant

when she was killed. -- pregnant when she was killed. if convicted, the company's owners could face jail time and total fines up to $2 million. their arraignment is set for january 19th. david receivenson will have more at -- david stevenson will have more on this at 5:00. an experienced skydiver with ties to the bay area is dead after an accident in southern california. police say it happened yesterday at the perris valley sky diving field south of riverside, whism the man was atilting a difficult -- was attempting a difficult ma noon -- maneuver. this is the sixth death there at the facility. tens of thousands of mourners turned out in north korea today for a funeral procession for the country's late leader, kim jong-il.

inside and outside of campaign offices, and will have a long list of grievances. occupy protesters have set up a new camp in oakland. it sprang up yesterday in a vacant lot in west oakland near mandella parkway. protesters have placed more than a dozen sents in what's being -- tents in what is being called the triangle. >> we need to grow this. this is how we're gonna do it. we're gonna find a benign place where we can establish ourselves and then grow, in a healthy way. >> police are monitoring the encampment. they cleared out another camp back on november 22nd. that came a week after the -- after the big raid at frank ogawa plaza. governor brown is weighing in on the occupy protests at the port of oakland. he says the city and state must

officers busted him for having an alleged meth lab in a motel. officers handcuffed him and he still managed to get away. the suspect says he doesn't remember the incident. the cost to visit marin's mere woods is set to go up in the new year. the entrance fee will rise from $5 to $7 starting january 1st. the additional $2 will go directly to california state parks which are facing severe budget cuts. officials say holders of certain park passes will not have to pay any extra money. as we first showed you this morning on ktvu "mornings on 2," uc berkeley has launched a cleanup to make sure rats don't take over people's park. work crews are spending the entire day sprimming hems and trees. they hope to improve visibility for students at a new nearby dorm. the work will also help produce a rat population hiding in

heavy plants cover. >> we're taking those berms out and hopefully taking away the places for the rats to live. >> there will be new lights, new trash cans and improvements to deter rats to the compost bins. cub scouts, church groups and others joined in to spruce up edith morley park. the city says the free help is much appreciated since it doesn't have enough staff to do the maintenance it would like to. the water that irrigates parks and schools in san leandro is off because of a water main break this morning. >> it was reported at 4:00 on leonard near interstate 8 0. at some point water up to 2 feet

was -- was gushing from the pipe. crews say while irligationsh -- while -- a water main ruptured at fulton and 25 the avenue near golden gate park. it's taken the water department crews several hours to fix the problems an clean up the miss. it's been a knew weeks since the bay area has had any significant rain and water officials are hoping the new year will bring a wet forecast. this time last year, several rain storms have moved through the area and the sierra was buried under a massive snowpack. east bay m.u.d. said reservoirses were spilling over. water officials hone the next few months -- hope the next few months will make up for the unusually dry december. >> i would say we're playing a wait-and-see game right now. i will say conservation is always a good thing for customers to be aware of.

>> east bay m.u.d. says it's always a good idea to limit water usage because we never know how much rain is gonna fall. no spare the air alert has been issued. officials are considering a wood ban this weekend. several spare the air alerts were issued, including christmas day but people were still lighting fires despite the ban. temperatures in the valley range from the mid-20s to the low 30s this week alone and the crop owners spent $87 million to keep their crops healthy. well, a lot of sunshine out there. we had a little bit of a cloud ban go through.

we haven't had much in the way of clouds. we almost -- the pattern has changed a little bit. not a lot. instead of lows driving in southern california, they are moving into the pacific northwest. they could use the rain. they are gonna get some pretty hefty totals between now and sunday and monday. if you are driving to southern california, i know san francisco on monday is look for a high of 81 degrees. so i mean there's no rain coming for us any time soon. this sure looks like -- unless friday we get light rain. it will go down to the second driest december ever in sacramento. only .12 has fallen this month. if we do, we have a chance, a hint, that is of rain on friday. some higher clouds drifted in. hazy sunshine. there's fog on the coast. it's kind of touching the marin/sonoma coast. temperatures in the 50s. 58 santa rosa to 57 san jose and even livermore. you can see some of that fog

right there. now, this may give us some drizzle. we'll take anything we can get at this stage. but that wouldn't be until tonight or tomorrow. a lot of low clouds out there with these systems plowing in from the north. there's an inch in crescent city, eureka picked up a couple of .100ths. there's moisture moisture in seattle and portland -- there's enough moisture in seattle and portland that maybe some of that will drag in. that's about it. we're getting in the 60s here. san jose, santa clara valley, upper 50s to 60s to everybody. again, if we don't see the rain on friday, it will be a record- setting territory for many here. today, mostly sunny, partly sunny. if you are near the coast, there's fog there. other than that, we will increase the clouds thursday night. i think we'll get some drizzle. but that's really not much to write home -- to write home

it's been a relatively quiet day on wall street until today. stocks have been falling after europe central bank's reported the overnight deposited hit another record. and that's the latest indication of worry among european leaders. you can see the dow is down 3 131 points. nasdaq is down 30. s&p is off 14. the as' proposed move to the south bay may be a swing and a miss.
