information about the driver, including her picture. heather? >> reporter: frank, her name is erica rojo. police say she was so desperate to avoid getting caught today, she put innocent people at risk, including an oakland grandfather who is being treated tonight here at highland hospital. >> a side mirror ripped from an suv. an electrical junction box separated from its mounting enthusiasm is the aftermath of a hit-and-run in oakland. >> she's wanted for two felony warrants. once for auto theft, and one for drug charges. >> reporter: looking to serve those warrant this is afternoon. free month police tracked her. before officers moved in. rojo realized cops were on her tail, and took off. >> an suv coming down the sidewalk. she came to the curb right here, jumped the curb. >> reporter: but that time, carl dukes walked into the path

police joined forces earlier today for a manhunt on the campus of mills college. oakland police officers tried to stop a stolen el camino. the driver took off, and tried to escape by climbing a fence at the school. an oakland police spokesman said the man surrendered. investigators say the man is a parolee, and the el camino was reported stolen in concord. firefighters are working on a three-alarm fire involving at least two homes. it started at 8:30 just below grizzly boulevard. neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution. at one point, firefighters had to abandon one of their trucks after a power line fell on it. we do have a crew on the scene, and will bring you their video later in this newscast. amber lee live now in oakland, where some protesters

have set their tents up once again. >> reporter: gasia, right now behind me, you see about 20 protesters and three tents set up. right outside the lot where protesters have camped out, before police removed them. this group told me, they plan to be here 24/7. >> the latest occupy oakland encampment was almost invisible. >> we had the place cleaned out, trashed it, cleaned up the place. >> we had a porto potty. we had a bathroom set up, a kitchen set up. >> reporter: oakland police took down the encampment. one of the property owners confirmed to ktvu that he wanted the protesters to leave, and that led to police taking action. officers hand cuffed protesters, cited them for trespassing, and then released them. saying he and others set up camp here to help the

protesters. this is largely an industrial area, with some residential housing. one neighbor questioned why they set up a camp where very few would see the protesters message. >> i don't know if this is the best place for them to be. i don't know that it will be all that visible. another neighbor told us, he had enough. >> last night, it became a nuisance. got real high volume. there was a little bit of marijuana smoking over here, i'm assuming, because we smell it in the air. >> reporter: protesters vowed to stay in the area. >> you can't evict an idea! >> reporter: back here live, we don't see a police presence. we contacted police to see if they plan to remove these protesters from this area, but we have not heard back. reporting live here in west oakland, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. oakland mayor, jean quan has faced tremendous criticism

crushed by a printing press. they have pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and workplace safety violations. >> we're trying to send a message here to the employer and to the employees. >> reporter: prosecutors say the company failed to train workers on safety procedures and they claim the machine that crushed her lacked safety devices required by law. today, a silicone valley firm is warning people about an aspect of cyber security that many people don't even think about. as robert honda reports, they say in some cases, thieves could remotely take control of your car, while you're behind the wheel. >> reporter: they list the malicious software being discovered every day. a list that grows and grows. today, mcafee released a report

that hackers will step up mobile attempts. >> there's the chance of someone getting into your account, that's the fear. >> reporter: they say they use a mobile device like it was a pc, but without takek the same security recommendations. >> we also suggest that you apply the latest system, and application patches. >> reporter: the situation could get worse. the report also points out, many new cars come with a dock to connect the mobile device to an onboard computer control system. which means a cyber criminal could take control of the vehicle, even when it's moving. >> we could actually do several things to an automobile. we could unlock them. we could start them, we could deploy the air bags and the brakes with a smart phone. >> reporter: hackers are still ahead. >> mcafee is trying to get us to think about this stuff before we get into a panic mode. >> reporter: many mobile users say they have to risk it.

>> i can't help it. i tend to depend on a lot of apps. >> reporter: mcafee suggested antimalware for all devices. shopper track says people spent $44 billion during the week before christmas. that's up 15% compared to a year earlier. the day after christmas, shoppers spent $7 billion. that's up 25% from last year. overall, holiday sales are expected to be up about 3.7% from last year. internet analysts also report a huge jump in online shopping. web commerce site, comscore said holiday spending rose 14% to $35 billion. web watchers also say on christmas day, 20% of sales appeared to be the result of

people unwrapping their iphones and kindles and buying things online. the sales will likely rise further as bargain hunters take advantage of post christmas sales. mixed plans for hiring next year. according to career builder, 24% of employers in the western u.s. plan to add full time workers in 2012. that's about the same as last year. however, 9% of companies are planning to downsize. that is also the highest in the country. now a look at wall street, where the dow found nearly 140 points. the nasdaq declined to 2539. a cold night on the picket line for a group of factory workers on strike. dozens of employees of the american licorice company in union city walked off the job four weeks ago, when the company demanded they pay more for their healthcare and pensions without an increase in their base pay. >> we've been here since december 5. and we've been going 24/7 every day.

more now to that fire in the berkely hills. we just got these pictures back from our crew on the scene. this fire started about 8:30, and flames soared into the sky as firefighters worked to control the blaze. fortunately, winds are relatively calm in that area tonight. neighboring homes were evacuated, and firefighters had 20 abandon one of -- had to abandon one of their trucks. at this point, there are no reports of any injuries. there are major developments in a hit and run case out of vacaville. police say within the past

hour, a suspect turned himself in, and is now being questioned in connection with an accident that left a teenager seriously injured. debra is live in vacaville tonight, where surveillance video played a big role in this select. >> reporter: police tell me they now have the driver and the vehicle that jumped this curb onto the sidewalk. hit and seriously hurt a teenager. also took out this pole and a line of shrubbery, his next stop was a surveillance camera. this man, strolling into a target store had just committed a hit and run, according to vacaville police, as he seemed poised to shop, the 16-year-old lay unconscious and bleeding ablock away. >> just walking, he was struck from behind. he was care idea all the way here where he landed behind this flag pole here. >> reporter: investigators follow car parts and a trail of transmission flood to this parking lot. cameras here captured the driver getting out, checking

the damage to his vehicle, then entering the store. >> you had to know, yes, you hit my son. then you went to target. you didn't just leave, you went to target. you're on the camera. >> reporter: the suspect doesn't stay long in target. about 10 seconds before walking back out, and driving away. >> can't really tell if he was intoxicated, or impaired, but he does look nervous. >> reporter: debris reveals the hit and run vehicle is a maroon toyota sequoia. police say the driver may not have realized he hit a pedestrian. >> he doesn't know what happened. he doesn't have a clue. >> reporter: young tovias has bleeding and sweeling of his brain, but will recover. his family thinks about how they might have lost him. >> we raised him to be responsible. he has a year left in high

school. it's just, that's my son. >> reporter: the surveillance shot widely publicized tonight, apparently played a role in the suspect, surrendering to police in just the last hour. they're not giving us his name or his account of what happened here, but we do know he is from vacaville, and he is being questioned right now. certainly, a relief for the victim's family. live in vacaville. a girl is recovering after being hit by a bullet in the city's western addition neighborhood. investigator sassity teen was standing with friends when she heard several shots, then felt a pain in her leg. no arrests have been made, the girl was taken to san francisco general hospital for treatment. family and friends gathered tonight in oakland to remember a man killed in an active of revenge. there were candles where the

security guard was shot two years ago. prosecutors say it was in retaliation for identifying a man in a weapon's case. last week, a judge sentenced 20- year-old rashad lee to 65 years to life in prison for the murder. jackson's mother says she has gotten some comfort, knowing the killer is behind bars. >> i absolutely pray that you keep praying. walnut creek police say a school custody arrested last week on child molestation has been charged with sex crimes against children. he is accused of molesting two children. prosecutors say neither was a student at the campus where he worked as a janitor. crews in the east bay and san francisco spent parts of today, dealing with broken

water main. in the city's richmond district, the water main ruptured this morning at the intersection of fulton street and 26th avenue near golden gate park. it took water department crews until 1:45 this afternoon to fix the problem. in san leandro, a water main broke this morning near interstate 880. the worker on the scene said breaks are common, and can be triggered by the cold weather. in this case, water for irrigation at a nearby park was shut off. it has been an eventful two days at sacramento airport, where a bird strike today forced a southwest plane to land just minutes after it had taken off. the plane was bound for ontario in southern california. no one was injured, but the plain did suffer minor damage. southwest booked passengers on other flights. the airline also closed the runway, but it was reopened a short time later.

the faa is now investigating a plane that blew two tires while taking off last night. they looked over the runway, but didn't find any debris that may have caused it. southwest is also conducting its own investigation. coming up in 20 minutes, a federal judge today ordered the u.s. government to pay the family of four people killed in a horrible accident near san diego. how much the government has to pay, and what led to that deadly crash. the california supreme court is expected to hand down a decision tomorrow on whether legislators were within the law when they dissolved the state's redevelopment agencies. at stake is $1.7 billion in property tax revenue that the state wants to divert to its own coffers. the redevelopment association and league of cities claim lawmakers violated a 2010 voter initiative that specifically barred the legislature from seizing property tax revenue from redevelopment agencies. a judge today dismissed a

into northern california and more activity here in the pacific. tomorrow will be dry, with plenty of clouds to start out thursday morning and also into the afternoon hours. coming upk i'll show you when a few sprinkles could be moving into parts of the bay area, and the one direction temperatures will be helded this weekend. agricultural pesticide use in california rose almost 10% last year compared to the year before. the state department of pesticide regulation has released new figures showing nearly 173 million pounds of pesticides were applied to crops in california over the past year. experts say it's districtly related to the number of crops grown. environmentalists say more needs to be done to cut down on pesticide use. san francisco tells bad drivers to smile for the camera. the new effort to stop accidents at a dangerous intersection.

a new red light camera now sits above a busy san francisco intersection. the intersection is right along the panhandle of golden gate park. it's a crossing shared by cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. >> for years, san francisco's fell street and masonic avenue has been among the city's top intersections for collisions. a dangerous place by foot and bike. >> people want to get through the light. before it changes, so they'll come here and then the bikers are supposed to cross too. so i saw someone get hit that

way. >> reporter: some drivers say they're confused by visual clutter. the san francisco municipal transportation agency has now added red light cameras in what it calls a last ditch effort to stop collisions. >> we try to adopt all options before we get to the red light camera, and in this specific case, we saw incidents happened even after we took other safety measures. >> reporter: the city's 24 red light cameras have helped reduce collisions tied to red light runnings by 45% since 1997. fines on this new camera may range as high as $530. >> this is not about writing more citations. this is about creating additional deterrents and providing for a safer environment. i think you can do it, and do it thoughtfully, if you're not motivated by profit, which some jurisdictions have been. >> reporter: the cameras will be turned on, in early january,

with signs posted, warning of fines for illegal left turns. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu, channel 2 news. a plan to change the flow of traffic on a business road in sonoma county has created controversy. the city council voted unanimously to install roundabouts. opponents say reducing four lanes to two will lead to congestion, and upset drivers. >> none of those businesses want the roundabouts, because it's a business killer. >> an opportunity for peel to get out of their cars and walk through, like many of the other nice downtowns in sonoma county. >> group against the roundabouts is collecting signatures. an ambitious cleanup effort at people's park.

this morning, work crews were trimming hedges and trees and foliage in an effort to help reduce the park's rat population. the owners of local businesses have expressed concerns about the appearance of the park and the number of rats living there. the university plans to improve lighting, install new trash cans, and recede with smaller plants that consume less water. members fired off an email saying its members were not informed of the project. the board member says the area bulldozed today is where they hold council meetings. a scam that hit the blue star moms in the south bay. thieves stole $3,000 from the croup's account after members shopped at one of several lucky supermarkets hit by a card scamming operation. organizers say since that news broke, they've received added donations totaling about

ringing in the new year typically means a lot of parties with champagne toasts. but in some parts of the bay area, it also means firing guns into the air. one way to catch those people, and the penalty is pretty steep. >> reporter: the dispatch center at redwood center police department lights up like a christmas tree on new year's eve. >> traditionally folks like to sell bright by firing off their

guns every year. >> reporter: they have learned to take cover. >> things do fly out of the sky around here. >> bullets? >> i would think so. i don't think they're firecrackers. >> reporter: in redwood city, big brother might not always be watching, but he is listening. a system of microphones connected to a computer at police dispatch shot spotter deck knowledge cords, and differentiates gunshots from firecrackers and pinpoints the location, even the address. it's helping police in their silent night program. >> it's to the point where we recommend officers and citizens get undercover around midnight. what goes up, has to come down. >> reporter: last year, police responded to 22 calls for gunshots on new year's eve. this year, eric silver man is

dui, if you don't take care of it, the officers are going to pick you up. everything we do is a reminder not to let people drink and drive. oakland police have released information on a shooting today that left a man fighting for her life. police tell us the man was found on a sidewalk near san antonio way. we've learned the adult victim is hospitalized with life- threatening injuries. officers do not have anyone in custody with that shooting. the cbs time poll has mitt romney in the lead with 25%. followed by ron paul with 22%. rick santorum has now moved into third place. with just six days left, the political attacks are now

a judge has ordered the federal government to pay a san diego family $17.8 million following a fatal crash. the faa was on a training assignment, when both jets failed, and the plane crashed into a house. a mother, a grandmother, and two babies died. a series of mistakes by the pilot led him to over that populated area. the pilot ejected safely. the u.s. government is warning iron, any disruption to traffic will not be tolerated. they're threatening to close it. the sanctions are underway as a way to punish tehran, which the

today. the rebel army posted video of anambush on the syrian military. the government said at least six soldiers were killed, and 12 injured in attacks today. huge crowds lined the streets of north korea's capitol today to witness the funeral prosession for kim jung il. mourners wailed in what appeared to be an exaggerated show of emotion. his son was seen walking next to his son's hearse. they have placed him in the role of supreme leader. the memorial service is expected to continue tomorrow. we'll be right back after this.

setting month for gun sales across the country. >> we do have shotguns for sale. >> reporter: inside jackson arms shooting range, the phone has been ringing all day with customers buying countries. john is looking to buy a small caliber gun for his daughter. >> i've taken her target shooting and the large caliber seems to intimidate her. so i want to start her on something small. >> reporter: gun background checks are on the rise. the fbi reports the number of background checks in december has already topped the previous one month record set in november of 1.5 million. jason says he has definitely noticed an increase in gun sales. >> i think people are feeling a little more positive in terms of the economy, so they're coming back in, and spending a lot more again. >> reporter: he says more

people that have never shot a gun are signing up for a class. >> it was a present to myself. i just graduated. just got my mba. >> reporter: consumer psychologist kate yarro says people may be buying guns because cut backs in government have made them feel vulnerable. >> an erosion of trust makes people feel like they need to be more self- reliant. >> reporter: some gun owners worry tougher gun laws could be coming depending on who wins the presidential election next year, so we could see another spike in sales. starting january 1, it will be illegal to carry an unloaded hand gun in plain sight in california violaters of the new law face fines of $1,000, and up to a year in jail.

there are exemptions for people with concealed gun permits. three laws taking aim january 1 are aimed at keeping kids safer. one makes it illegal to sell cough syrup to children under 18 without a prescription. another makes it mandatory for car seats for children. >> i kind of feel bummed out a little. >> why? because i really want to know how it feels to sit in this. >> the other new law will prohibit children under the age of 18 from using tanning parlors unless they have a doctor's prescription. a solar flair on monday, is causing auroras similar to these in alaska, and canada. it is expected to reach closer to the earth over the next couple of days. the flairs could disrupt satellite, and radio signals,

but aren't considered powerful enough to disrupt the power grid. well the clouds have been headed into the by area over the past three to four hours. there is a possibility we could have drizzle, or sprinkles in the north bay. that could be the case a few hours ago, and also into the overmight hours as well. if you can see the main rain ban to the north of eureka. over the next couple of days, this could be sagging to the south just a little bit. but really, no significant rachel in our forecast. this is kind of a neat shot. you can see the clouds, the low clouds, and also the high clouds. at least the fog will be returning coast side, and also right around the bay. that could impact your visibility. we all know it has been a very dry december. so far, only three days of measurable rainfall and this will be probably the second dryest december on record. december of 1989 was very dry. no measurable rainfall for santa rosa, san francisco, and oakland back in '89. so far, you can see the amounts
