let the redevelopment agencies exist was also shut down by the court. so it was a total defeat for redevelopment advocates. ken pritchett, ktvu news. san francisco mayor ed lee issued a statement calling the decision disappointing. it has spurred economic growth for an entire city at a time when we needed it the most. the bay area's largest city san jose is poised to take the largest hit. coming up, a look at how today's decision will change some of san jose's plans. police in pinol announced that evidence has helped them solve a 12-year-old cold case murder alyson of pinol went missing, her body was found riddled with bullets.

federal agents picked up long at san francisco airport as he was returning from china on a sex abuse charge. police have now charge wong with murder. invest investigators are holding a news conference, we do have crews there and we will bring you the latest coming up. a five hour stand off with a man police say was carrying a machete. scott mckenne is facing several charges including assault with a deadly weapon and threatening a police officer with a deadly weapon. police were called just before 3:00 a.m. mckennen was playing loud music and being confrontational. mckinning yielded a machete and threw bottles at the officers. a woman who allegedly

tossed her toddler out of a window remains hospitalized for mental evaluation. the 24-year-old had been treated for severe depression just before police say she tossed her 2-year-old son out of a window then jumped herself. cortez broke several bones, her son suffered minor injuries. walnut creek teacher andrew cottrell pled not guilty. we first reported the arrest of the 41-year-old back in december 9th. the mount diablo middle school teacher had sex with a former female student. he faces multiple charges including possession of child pornography. he is scheduled to be back in court january 19th. police are targeting people using their cell phones including kids. the robberies are happening at all times of day and in different neighborhoods in the city from west oakland to mount claire park. investigators say in some cases the robbers targeted people

sitting in their cars talking on the phone or in the case of mount claire park, two 14-year- olds were recently robbed of their cell phones and ipods. always be aware of your surroundings and try to keep your cell phones and other belongings out of sight. the latest move by the team management are causing outrage among some fanless. our janine de la vega joins us now from a sports bar with this latest controversy. >> reporter: a lot of oakland a's fans hang out here and they tell me that they are confused and they don't know what to make about what's happening with the organization. tina ricardo has always displayed memorabilia for years but she's noticing a change. >> we don't see people with it anymore. >> reporter: the game has dwindled and talk to the team

moving to san jose is frustrating fans. >> this is the sports capital of the bay area. >> reporter: in the last 20 days the a's have made graphic changes. three valuable star players were traded to other teams. in exchange they received prospects from the minor league. fans say the team is being set up to fail. >> you have to wonder about the strategy, they don't want us to show up so they can move. >> you're following a jersey, they're coming in one door and out the other. >> reporter: in order for a move to happen, the san francisco giants need to give up territorial rights to san jose. sources with the city of san jose say that will be discussed in a meeting next month with the commissioner for major league baseball. >> if nothing it, it directs attention to what the a's consider to be their plight in oakland playing in a stadium and under conditions that don't allow them to generate enough evidence to compete. these are extreme measures, there's no doubt about it.

boulevard during our 10:00 news. at one point firefighters evacuated 15 homes, they were worried that the fire would spread because of all the dry vegetation in the area. four firefighters ended up suffering injuries. another day without snow in the sierra. as dry as it's been here it's been just as dry up there. that's affecting a lot of people there in the sierra. mike. >> reporter: we are live in downtown truckee, this is a scene that might be unusual to some considering how dry it is. look at all the cars making their way to downtown truckee. what we found today is actually proof there is another side to this no snow story. this is one side of the story,

everyone is struggling with this dry december. >> yeah, it's great. people are loving it here at north star. between us and heavenly we have more ski trails than all the other ski resorts combined. >> reporter: another example of who is booming with business due to this lack of snow, the businesses here in downtown truckee, they are reporting that business is actually up this week versus this same week last year and hotels up here they are reporting 60 to 80% occupancy rates. even though they do admit they've had cancellations of people worried about the snow up here. speaking of snow, what a difference a year make. the department of water resources is expected to conduct its first survey on tuesday. it'll be taken to determine the amount of water from the winter snow pack. it is expected to be far below normal with the dry december.

last year during the first snow survey the snow pack water content was 158% of average. an additional 15,000 people signed up for unemployment. the claims have slowed to its lowest rate since june of 2008. many employers expect to add jobs. there was a bright spot in the housing market today, sales of existing homes across the country rose by 7.3% in december to the highest level seen since april of last year. real estate analysts say pent up demand is competing with prices as they wait for a better deal. on wall street, stocks rebounded with just one more day of trading for the year. expected improvement in next year's job market and other

an investigation is underway into a crash involving a transit bus and big rig. the route 22 bus collided with a truck on south seventh street in san jose. the bus driver suffered minor injury, no passengers were on the bus and no other injuries were reported. the last gift of the holiday season can be a tax

agencies are doing their part to keep new year's eve partyers safe. caltrain, bpa and nummi bus and rail. golden gate buses and ferry are on regular saturday schedules. b.a.r.t. is offering special new year's service as well. trains will run three hours longer than they usually do overnight. service will continue until 3:00 a.m. january 1st new year's day. during those extended hours the trains will run at their regular interval. we're getting updated numbers on dui arrests so far during the holiday enforcement period. in alameda county, 480 million people have been arrested of dui since the crack down began. contra costa county reported 188 arrests on suspicion of drunk drivingful authorities in san francisco have taken 84 people into custody and san mateo now reports 111dui arrests. the special enforcement period ends on new year's day. police in east palo alto

are cracking down on what's become a dangerous new year's eve tradition. today officers tested their shot spotter. they are getting ready for new year's eve when a lot of people sometimes celebrate by shooting firearms into the air. it's a risky and illegal tradition that could lead to jail time if you're caught. and police want people to know they will be both watching and listening. >> what we're trying to promote is a safe new year, a safe celebration. and show one of the tools that we're going to use in catching people that are discharging firearms at midnight. >> the shots spotter not only can detect gunfire it can also distinguish gunshots it hears from fire crackers and other sound. the alameda county corner released the name of a motorcyclists killed in an accident last night in livermore. police say 25-year-old james thomas was speeding when he ran

a red light on holmes street just before midnight. he collided with a van and died at the scene. officers say he sped away when officers tried to make a traffic stop. officers say he was not licensed to drive a motorcycle. a sonoma state university student is behind bars as she begins her sentence for a misdemeanor vehicle manslaughter in the death of a 2-year-old girl. kat eland dunnaway pled not guilty. she will serve five days in jail, 115 days under home confinement, she will lose her license for one year and must perform 200 hours of community service. the faa today said it has not yet determined the cause of an unusual double tire blow out on a southwest airline jet that happened at sacramento international airport. the boeing 737 was bound for seattle tuesday night when the two left main tires blew out on take off. the plane then returned to the

terminal and no one was hurt. inspectors have ruled out -- scientists believe they now know what killed a large gray whale, it was a fungal infection. thousands of people went out. local people called her mama because she entered the river with her baby. a gray wolf wondering in southern oregon has crossed the border into california. grey wolves were driven into extension with the last one seen in this state more than 80 years ago. fish and game has been following the male grey wolf by his gps collar, however they say he will not be able to reaccomplish the species on his

own because right now he is not traveling with a female wolf. bay area air quality officials have joined calfire in restricting outdoor burning for agriculture reasons. the burning of stubble and straw has been permitted that period will end sunday. the water district says conditions are too dry to allow the next so call permissible the áf burn season to begin. the spare the air restriction has been voluntary, but officials are getting hundreds of calls with reports that neighbors were ignoring the request. well, once again no rain today here in the bay area, but mark a lot of fog out there. >> yeah, that's right. lots of low level moisture in place. as a result the fog reducing visibility coast side and right around the bay. we've been locked in this dry weather pattern for about two weeks. things could be changing in

just a little built as we head into your friday. tonight we'll be dry. mostly cloudy skies. more cloud cover for tomorrow. we do bring a chance of a few showers especially up in the north bay. this weekend as we do wrap up 2011 we are expecting partly cloudy skies and mild numbers out there. overnight lows tomorrow morning, no 20s, no 30s, the coolest locations will be in the lower 40s. out toward fairfield and napa. santa rosa right around 45 degrees. san francisco at 50, we'll have the high clouds and also some dense pockets of fog especially right around the bay. so that could impact your visibility first thing tomorrow morning. if you are heading to the mountains for tomorrow, there is a chance of very light rain or snow. but snow levels will be way up, they're right around 7,500 feet. the main issue will be the winds, we could have winds gusting at 105 gusts to the southwest. a sun-cloud mix for both days. overnight lows right around 70

degrees. and overnight lows back into the mid- to upper 40s. here you can pick out in the satellite we have been tracking rain showers to our north. right along the north coast. we've been dealing with higher clouds and pockets of fog. though we have a little bit more organization out here pacific. this will be approaching our coastline as we head into friday. as a result, we're going to keep the clouds in the forecast in fact, you can't pick out all the overcast. once again dense fog for tomorrow morning at 7:00. possibly some drizzle as well. coming up we'll cycle through this forecast model, we'll highlight rain chances for tomorrow. also break down the warmest day of the upcoming weekend. the two teams playing in this weekend's help crack down hunger game will be held this weekend. this is one of the several events the ucla bruins and fighting align will be attending. the bowl is the only the áf bowl focusing on hunger in the

a southern california man has pled not guilty to shooting an army specialist. when sullivan tried to break up the fight, harado opened fire shattering sullivan's spine. sullivan's family says he is in critical condition and paralyzed from the neck down. sullivan was already recovering from injuries he suffered in afghanistan during a suicide bombing last year. a turkish military air strike is causing anger on both sides of the border. iraq says the suspected rebels were actually cigarette smugglers. the air strike is being called

the crime against humanity by kurts in turkey and and iran. the wall street journal reports that prosecutors are focusing on whether bp engineers and at least one supervisor lied to regulators about the risks they were facing while drilling the well. it's up to the federal trial to determine the fate of bp is set to start in december. in all of the 79 stores in this partial list, 29 are sears, 38 are k mart. three of the sear stores are in southern california but no kmart stores in the state were

a lot of big projects are on the line in the bay area's largest city after a key ruling on redevelopment agencies. but low income residents might be the first to feel the big pinch. we told you at the bebeginning of this newscast, how the state supreme court held the state's plan to help balance the state

budget. robert handa live now with how san jose could be affected. >> reporter: well today's decision was disappointing but not a surprise for san jose. the redevelopment agency helped shape this city and now it has to find ways to do it in a new way if it can. nancy just moved her family into the new brickwood city terrance apartment. a new apartment complex financed mostly by the redevelopment agency. >> we were fortunate to move in here. >> did you save money by moving here? >> yes i did. yes, i saved a lot of money moving here. >> reporter: but brickwood is one of the final success stories for the agency. today the ruling that allowed the redevelopment coffers. >> you feel like a teenager who just had their car keys taken

away. >> reporter: the convention center and stadium will be funded in other ways like special taxings. but one big casualty will be affordable housing because it's difficult to find investors. >> without it it means a lot of families are not going to have affordable housing here, it means a lot of companies won't be able to lure workers here. >> reporter: but the president of the board of supervisors says san jose's monster redevelopment agency hurts social programs. >> it's an important decision because it returns property tax back to those local agencies. it's important for us at the county too in terms of what we call safety net services. >> reporter: some cities including san francisco and oakland may try to retain the redevelopment agency by giving a big chunk to money to schools. but san jose does not have

those funds. the community is stepping up to help two days after a fire left 60 people without a community. community groups were holding a fundraiser for those who lost everything. other volunteers filled five pickup truck with donations. the biggest need now is housing especially less expensive rentals for those who have been left homeless. firefighters rescued three cats from a house fire in vallejo this afternoon. the fire broke out this afternoon. the flames broke out in the garage then spread into the attic. no people were home at the time, but firefighters had to use oxygen to revive those cats. the fire did about $75,000 in damage and the house is no longer safe to live in. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. a split second decision made by a woman trying to escape from police ended up sending an innocent bystander to the hospital with serious injuries. jade hernandez is here now with what she learned today about

both the victim and the woman police are searching for, jade. >> reporter: a judge issued an $80,000 warrant this morning for this woman, 27-year-old erica rojo. the warrant for assault with a deadly weapon is in connection with a hit-and-run at 98th and eve in oakland. rojo already has two felony warrants for selling and transporting drugs. >> she jumped the curb and ran him down. he was right here. >> reporter: this woman is talking about her friend carl duke who fremont police say was run over by this woman. >> just left the hospital and his wife was there. i spoke with him he said that he just remembered a car hit me and getting knocked into the wall. >> reporter: the man worked at this market for year, doing odd jobs. yesterday he was struck in front of it. duke helped stock these shelves and cooked from time to time. the store's surveillance camera may provide police evidence.

two people are dead another 60 are injured after a 40 car pile up in louisiana. the chain reaction crash happened at around four clock this morning in new orleans. authoritys are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. but some drivers say the crash was as a result of extremely poor visibility from either fog or smoke. there may soon be an urgent need for more gay friendly senior housing. as the number of gay seniors increases, a lack of gay friendly affordable housing is leading many to hide their sexual orientation. they say they fear discrimination or worse by health care workers and seniors of senior living facilities. a bill going before the u.s. congress has resulted in an online protest targeting go

911 -- 9/11 site draws about 10,000 visitors every day. there's new questions about a planned museum at that memorial site. michael bloomburg said work has ground to a halt and that there's no chance it will open as scheduled next september. the company is in a money dispute over infrastructure cost. the new york times says it sent the wrong e-mail to subscribers. they meant to send out the e- mail to 200 people who had cancelled their subscription but it went out to all subscribers. a landmark store is closing its doors. the owners of the creative music say tomorrow will be their last day in business.

since 1985 the record store had been known for its wide range of music from jazz to gospel to world music. even old school vinyl and rare cassettes. like many other music retailers though they said they saw sales drop as more consumers buy their music online. a postal worker in kansas has brought back the spirit of the pony express when a blizzard hit last week, postmaster lizzie grusi did not let the snow keep her from her round. she saddled up her pony, her owners sent her an e-mail asking her to make every effort to get to work which she says she did. heavy fog is causing some delays at sfo with the average delays being about an hour and 40 minutes. the chp issued a fog advisory

on the san rafael bridge. >> even coming into jack london square, i saw fog like it was 8:00 a.m. in the morning. but i guess mark this is what you told us about yesterday. >> we were talking about the fog gasia and frank. tons of low level moisture out there. as a result you get a little bit of a stable ceiling, that means the fog forms underneath it. it's a factor right now. it's one of those deals where you can have relatively clear conditions. then you come upon that flood bank. you can see right with our mapping system and as we head into it tomorrow morning. this was the scene today looking out toward san francisco bay where we have the lower clouds and higher clouds working their way back into the region. temperatures right now not so cold. most spots back down into the 50s. san francisco 54, san jose same temperature as well, 54. concord in the upper 50s and napa currently checking in in the mid-50s at 55 degrees with quite a bit of cloud cover over a good portion of the bay area. rain up to our north, we have more development out here in

the pacific. we could have a few spotty showers approaching the region for tomorrow. at least for tomorrow, mostly cloudy skies, areas of fog. we still have a high in place before the bay area, and with that remaining dry, but this will be getting a break down a little bit for tomorrow in advance of this guy. this guy will be moving into southern california. it is very weak but it'll keep the clouds in place for tomorrow. we do have a chance of some drizzle tomorrow morning then a few showers and the highest chance will be up in the north bay. this is only a chance and the latest forecast model i'm about to show you is not too aggressive with the rain chance at all. here you can pick out tomorrow morning, cloud cover, fog, and some drizzle out there. as i put this into motion into the afternoon hours by 12:00. a little bit of action, this is all very light, that light shade of blue beginning to move into parts of the north bay. we could have drizzle out there tomorrow morning. and then by late tomorrow afternoon, this little band of moisture could be moving in. so as a result we do bring in
