there's another part to the story, which is that four years ago, in vancouver, maggie had a brain tumor, was in the hospital. some of the one us got word she was a huge fan and visited her in the hospital. so the game is also special for another reason. when trying to contact the family this morning, to get more details, police told us they can't release much more because maggie is a juvenile. reporting live, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. a san francisco man is due in court this morning to face charges in a fatal hit-and-run crash on christmas eve.

23-year-old juan martinez is being held on $1 million bail. he has district attorneys says he admitted to police that he drank 13 or 14 beers before driving his car last saturday. police say that's when he drove on to a traffic island in the mission district, hitting and willing a pedestrian. a suspect is under arrest after a high-speed chase from napa to solano county. police pursued a car driving recklessly around 9:00 last night. officers followed that vehicle on to interstate 80, two others crashed into each other trying to avoid the suspect vehicle in vallejo. no one was hurt during the chase. occupy protestors have a new tactic against police. a demonstrator climbed into a tree at location and frank ogawa plaza and set up a wooden platform to camp there. for the time being, police are allowing him to stay. protestors plan to occupy the tree in shifts. demonstrators spent a month

atop a tree and say it makes police uncomfortable because they're not trained for it. and coming up at 7:30, a live report from the plaza, a check on the protestors to see how their the night in chilly temperatures wept. we're learning more about details about a sexual harassment claim against former hewlett-packard ceo mark herd. there's a letter written on baffle of the woman who made the sexual harassment claims. in one part of the letter -- the woman dropped her claims after herd paid her an undisclosed sum of money. this morning republican candidates are fanning out with the caucuses four days away. coming up a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with the latest poll results and how the candidates are

stepping up their attacks on each other. meantime, preparations are underway for some of the biggest new year's eve parties in the bay area. one of the loudest is the fireworks show on embarcadero. an estimated 200,000 people are expected to watch the free display and ring in 2012. people are told to arrive about 11 clinton 30 in the evening, and head south of the ferry building on the embarcadero where the best view. while there are many events across the bay area, another highly anticipated show is the winter wonderland spectacular, and downtown san jose. unlimited rides cost $15, and parking is free. we have a list of other events on our website, just look for the link at the top of ktvu.com. and you can ring in 2012 with ktvu channel 2 and the american country new year's eve live. it airs right after the 10:00 news, tomorrow night.

traffic alert for commuters in san francisco. expect traffic tie-ups in the financial district tonight with the monthly critical mass bicycle right. tonight's ride starts at 6 p.m. riders will meet at just 10 herman plaza and then hit city streets. critical mass always takes place on the last friday of the month. the winter weather caused caltrans to perform preventive work. crews closed this ramp for a few hours overnight, concerned the bottom of the overpass will start to erode due to moisture. so crews laid down sandbags to strengthen the surface. couple san francisco police officers transported to the hospital just about a half hour ago when a check in with tara for more information about this accident. >> reporter: we just spoke to muni officials who say the people in the accident suffered non-life-threatening injuries so that's the good news. it happened before 6:30 this morning in san francisco's bayview district at third and 22nd, when a muni railcar

this is a live look at that muni scent that we've been talking about this morning in san francisco's bayview district at the corner of third avenue and 22nd. we have received confirmation that a police car collided with a muni train. there's the cop car there. they are conducting an investigation but the t line is going to be shut down for some time. shut releases in place. two police officers and the bus operator have been transported to the hospital with moderate injuries. we're working to get more information from san francisco police, but as you can see, this is a very active scene. we don't know how long this investigation is going to take. and speaking with officials, they say it could be some time. so if you live in in neighborhood and you need to get around, be aware that there are shuttles in place that will take you around this accident. we do have a reporter on the scene. lorain blanco will give you a live report in the next couple

chronicle, 41-year-old alexander pelosi told a website her mother wants to retire. but is staying on out of a feeling of obligation and because of pressure from big democratic donors. pelosi's office says the comments are not true and pelosi is preparing to be back in the job of speaker of the house, if the democrats win back the house of representatives next year. homeland security has set up a hotline for people jailed on immigration charges. the toll-free number will be staffed 24 hours a day and offer translation services. it's designed to inform immigrants of their rights. here's the number. earlier this month, homeland security stopped arizona from checking on the status of jailed immigrants amid concerns of racial profiling and discrimination. u.s. and afghan officials say the obama administration hopes to restart talks with the taliban in the spring after negotiations fell apart this month. a u.s. official says one goal

of renewed talks would be to identify a cease-fire zone or zones that could be used as a step towards a full peace agreement. in turkey, funerals this morning for the 35 civilians killed in a botched military airstrike. the turkish military accidentsly killed the civilians on wednesday after mistaking them for kurdish rebels from iraq. many of the victims are from the same family. the turkish foreign minister says an investigation is underway. a cyclone is tearing through southeastern india. heavy rains and gale-force winds are continuing to pound the region and at least 11 people are dead. winds reaching 85 miles per hour have also uprooted trees, damaged homes, and disrupted transit services, including trains and airplanes. officials in allentown, pennsylvania may begin exhuming graves today because a large sinkhole is threatening a historic cemetery. it's 50 feet long and 30 feet wide it. formed yesterday when authorities discovered a water-

main break. about 60 graves in the cemetery have been roped off. a dozen nearby homes evacuated, and five have been declared structurally unsafe. fremont's vice mayor will now leave the city after the death of mayor bob watson. he died yesterday at 77 years old. he had been hospitalized for rest poier problems. he had served as the mayor since 2004, and before that he served as fremont's police chief on the city council. funeral arrangements are pending. we're following developing news in san francisco. two police officers and a muni driver in the hospital after a crash between a patrol car and a light rail vehicle. ktvu's lorain blanco just arrived on scene within the last few minutes in the dog patch neighborhood and joining us now with the latest. lorain. >> reporter: good morning. we're at the corner of third and 22nd street in the bayview district. and you can see right behind me where the muni light rail trail collided with the police car. it happened about 6:30 this

police rescued a michigan man from his burning car and then arrested him. tack a look at this video. look at that. authorities say 32-year-old alan blake accidentally put his foot on the gas pedal and the car caught fire. a police officer jumped in to pull that man out. >> grabbed ahold of him and he came with me. so i knew he was okay. but then i got him to the over side of the street where he was safe. >> within the couple minutes the car went up in flames. >> blake was under the influence, so they put him in custody after the rescue. business, labor and public officials worry the expansion of the panama canal could hurt west coast ports, including oakland's. the port of oakland like other regional facilities rely on asian ports, but the project which calls for a third lane to the panama canal will be completed in 2014. it would allow large freighters

to bypass west coast ports and head directly to terminals on the gulf and east coast. the project allows ships to carry almost three times more cargo. we of course following that muni accident in san francisco involve that police car. tara, is it causing delays there? >> yes, we just heard from lorain, mentioning no northbound traffic is allowed through that intersection at third and 22nd. these are live pictures that you're looking at here where you can see that the patrol car is pretty mangled there. looks like it was broadside ed by the muni bus. and the muni bus looks like it's being taken away right now. as we speak. and they do have traffic control on the scene, trying to let folks do. but looks like they'll be wrapping up their investigation. this particular intersection, this is where the t line runs through, and that has been shut down momentarily, and they're allowing for bus shuttles to get people where they need to go. again, there's a look at the cop car there. two officers were in that car

when this crash happened, and they've been transported to the hospital with some moderate injuries. the bus operator was also taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. but we understand there's a shuttle running right there as see in front of the camera. as we understand, these are non- life-threatening injuries. you can see they're taking photographs right now of the scene, so still sort of wrapping up their investigation but hopefully the scene will be clear soon so the traffic can get around. this happened around 5:45 this morning. so quite a while ago. and so hopefully, this will be wrapping up soon. up next we have a look at a fatal accident that actually happened here in the south bay, milpitas. sorry, my map did a little one- two number. 880 northbound at 237, we had a pickup truck that overturned and went off and chp reporting it was because of roads being so slick in that area. don't know if speeding was a factor. but they are trying to get the word out to remind folks to slow down in this area. and last but not least a look

occupation. >> reporter: it's rise and shine time here, and breakfast time. we've got a volunteer, attorney for the volunteers, who just came by to offer a donut. he says it's an apple fritter. he just woke up five minutes ago. the tree sitters up there right now, good morning! >> morning. >> back up in the tree last night. they have been out of the tree since the last port protest when police got them out. but previous to that, they've been up in the trees for 30 days with a rotation of 20 volunteer tree sitters. they say this time they're doing it with more experienced volunteers. so they stay up there actually and don't let police get them down. you're taking a lock now live at frank ogawa plaza. by the light of day, you can see that there's nothing here really except what essentially a mud patch because the city cleared out all the grass from the last occupation camp. the only thing we've seen across the plaza itself is a bunch of brats scurrying around this morning. we're walking to the other side

right now because the tree sitters aren't the only ones here. there is a group about two dozen people over on this side. they're set up with sleeping bags, they have food station, they have a first aid station. they say that they -- they say though have permission to be here. they can't be sleeping here technically. so you see kind of the sleeping bags all over the brick here. they say they're not sleeping, they're just here in their sleeping bags overnight. last night they set up a tent here on frank ogawa plaza in solidarity with a dozen protestors who were arrested on 10th street last night for occupying a foreclosed home. they essentially say that they have never left, though you see none of the tent city that we were accustomed to seeing here at frank ogawa plaza. they say occupy oakland still

exists, it has never gone away. they're here by day handing out fliers and a group them are always here. they say they want to get their message out. they're still want to go spread the message about home foreclosures, unemployment, homelessness, and basically economic disparity. reporting live, noel walker, ktvu channel 2 news. time is 7:33. we're following overnight news from oakland. right now police are looking for suspects in a drive-by shooting. that shooting happened shortly before 2 a.m. in the downtown area. investigators say bullets were passing cars hit an 18-year-old man driving another car. the victim then drove a short distance to seventh and market and stumbled out in the street. he is now listed in stable condition. it's still not clear what led up to the gunfire. a registered sex offender suspected of killing his former girlfriend a dozen years ago is behind bars this morning. prosecutessors have decided that there is finally enough

evidence to file murder charges against raymond wong. he is accused of killing 21- year-old alice sin of pinole. police said wong was living comfortablely in china in recent years. he was working as a computer company executive in beijing, under an assumed name. >> when we found out he was back in the country, we decide to run with this case and move forward, as if it almost did occur a day prior. and it was just a matter of putting the pieces, the final pieces together. >> the body of the young mother was found in a remote dirt road in nevada. the murder case against wong relied mostly on circumstantial evidence, bogged down by the question of whether authorities this california or nevada had jurisdiction. this year the bay area's three largest cities have matched or exceeded homicide totals from 2010. oakland has recorded 102 homicides this year, compared to 92 last year. san francisco's 50 homicides this year matches last year's total. and in san jose, the city has seen the highest number of

homicides in 15 years, with 38. that number does not include the two people killed at san jose state university. more than 100 children are waking up at an oakland church after taking part in a massive sleepover. it is happening at the allen temple baptist church, featuring 24 hours of food, fun and friends, all designed to keep the children off the streets and in a safe environment. organizers say the event also allows participants to connect with the church. >> so we just thought we could create an environment where they can come and have fun, and we can feed their spirits too. >> i'm just excited about how we have other people from other churches so we can expand our youth ministry and meet some new people. >> church organizers say they plan on making the sleepover an annual event. the former lawyer for convicted triple murderer bay is now suspended from practicing law. court documents show the suspension comes after lorna

all right. there's a look at the big board. dow down 23 points. not really a lot happening on the markets today. this is the last trading day of 2011. no notable economic data or

earnings reports coming in today. so it's expected to just kind of hover with not a lot of movement today. the new york stock exchange has notified american airlines parent company that it will drop amr stock before the opening bell next thursday. american airlines filed for bankruptcy last month, and its stock price fell to 26 cents a share and it's never been above a dollar since then. the stock exchanges requires all stock to sell for more than a dollar to remain listed. american says its shares will continue to trade, but it will be over-the-counter and under a new symbol. we now know some of the 100 sears and kmart stores that will be closing next year, none are in the bay area. but three are in southern california. florida did take the hardest hit with 11 stores shutting down. sears does as many as 40 more stores will be added to closure list later. companies that placate employees who feel overworked

with offering unusual perks according to a survey. voluntary benefits, including group discounts on computers, don't cost companies much. chair massages during the week, workweek day can make employees feel more relaxed and more productive. other perks include pet insurance, funeral planning, and cell phone plan discounts. the curtain is coming down on a rough year for the movie industry. the 8th harry potter movie was the biggest hit of 2011, followed by transformers, dark of the moon and "twilight" breaking down. but even most of the blockbusters didn't do as well as in years passed. over wall the industry sold more than $1.25 billion tickets the lottest total in 16 years. part of that is the economy, and some of it is because ticket prices continue to go up. santa claus must be getting more popular if that's popular. the air force santa tracking operation broke records for calls, e-mails and social media

good morning. and welcome back to mornings on 2. dave and tori have the morning off. it's friday, december 30th. we start the 8:00 hour with an update to a developing story. four people were transported to the hospital this morning after a crash between a san francisco police patrol car and a muni light rail vehicle. ktvu's lorain blanco is live this morning in san francisco with an update now. lorain. >> reporter: traffic is now open on 26th and third streets in san francisco in the bayview district. if you take a look here, you can see that a muni crew is in the process now of fixing a signal light for the muni train. but otherwise the t line is also back open. let's look at the scene when we arrived here.

you can see the muni light rail train facing northbound on third street, where it collided with a police vehicle. even with all the damage on the driver's side of the squad car, the two officers suffered only finallor injuries. they have been released from san francisco general. we're told the muni operator and a female passenger also suffered non-life-threatening injuries. >> i think the damage looks worse, the injuries are fairly minor, and obviously everybody is very lucky. >> back out here live, you can see the muni train is back in service. the one that got into the crash of course was taken to their yard. but the t line service is back open right now. the police car and the muni train have been towed away. so traffic is open right now at third and 26th, we're about to talk with the muni spokesperson and we'll have more information as soon as it becomes available. lorain blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police are

investigating another report of violence at a professional sports event. a 16-year-old girl says a drunk sharks fan attacked her wednesday night. kraig debro is live in san jose now with reaction from the sharks organization. kraig. >> reporter: sharks issued a statement. this doesn't rise to the level of bryan stow case or what happened at the 49er-raider game. but this girl did suffer a concussion. however, the person that police believe is responsible was not taken into custody. she is not under arrest. take a look at this picture, given to us by the marin independent journal, a picture of maggie and maya, maggie on the right. she is 16. her sister maya is 18 -- maggie on the right and maya on the left. independent journal gave us in picture. two nights ago the sisters from discovery bay attended the sharks game and got the tickets for christmas. they're both -- from vancouver. so they went to the game dressed in jerseys and ready to

cheer for the canucks. however, a woman sitting behind them didn't take too kindly to that and according to the girls began swearing at them during the game. at one time where the sharks scored a goal, the woman sitting behind the two girls lifted herself out of her chair to cheer for the sharks, and came down her hand hit maggie in the back of the head. she suffered a concussion. sharks issued a statement -- other fans did not report seeing any contact between the parties. other part of the story is maggie from vancouver, canada, four years ago she was suffering from a brain tumor some of the canucks visited her in the hospital. so they have a place in her heart for a long time to come. we called police, didn't get a call back. but one thing we heard from a published report was since maggie is a juvenile, there will be very little information they'll be able to release about this case. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news.

a san francisco man is due in court this morning to face charges in a fatal hit-and-run crash on christmas eve. tee-year-old juan martinez is being held on one mal dollars bail. the district attorney says it martinez admitted he drank 13 or 14 beers before driving last saturday, hitting and killing a pedestrian. a suspect is under arrested after a high-speed chase from napa to solano county. police pursued a car driving around 9:00 last night. officers followed the vehicle on to interstate 80, in vallejo and two others cars slashed into each other trying to avoid the suspect vehicle. the individual was arrested. no one hurt during the chase. occupy protestors of a new tactic against police, late last night a demonstrateddor climbed into a tree at oakland's frank ogawa plaza. he set up a wooden platform to camp there. police converged on the scene but for the time being are

allowing him to stay. protestors say they plan to occupy the tree in shifts, and say it makes police uncomfortable because they're not trained to deal with tree sitters. we're now learning more details about the sexual harassment claims against former hewlett-packard ceo, mark hurd, that led to his resignation last year. the san jose mercury fox 5 morning news says it obtained a letter written to hurd by gloria allred on baffle of the woman who made the sexual harassment claims. allred writes -- this morning the republican presidential candidate are fanning out across in iowa. with. caucuses just four days away, coming up at 8:15 we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with the latest poll results and how

state's primary ballot. the virginia republican party determined gingrich's campaign failed to turn in the required 10,000 signatures. but the attorney filing the lawsuit contends many of the signatures supporting gingrich were improperly excluded. only two of the republican candidates, were tunnel for eligible for the ply mare. "american idol" winner kelly clarkson is facing back already for her endorsement of ron paul. she tweeted in part -- that immediately drew backlash from clarkson's twitter followers is. ron paul came under fire recently for newsletters published in miss name in the 1980s and 90s that caned racist and anti-gay language. clarkson later tweeted that she was sorry if she offended anyone and that she supports gay rights. some comments by the caught of house minority leadermanman may kick up an interesting

it believed wooden scaffolding caught fire during the welding repairs. the dock has several nuclear reactors. but russian officials say the fire did not pose any risk to those reactors. nine people were hurt during the firefight. in turkey funerals this morning for the 35 civilians killed in a botched military airstrike. the turkish military says it accidentally killed the civilians on wednesday after mistaking them from kurdish rebels from iraq. many of the victims are said to be from the same family. the turkish foreign minister says an investigation is underway. and a psych is blowing through southeastern india. heavy rains and winds continuing to pound the region at least 11 people are dead. winds reaching 85 miles per hour have also uprooted trees, damaged homes, and disrupted transit services, including trains and airplanes. homeland security has set much a hotline for people jailed on immigration charges. that toll-free number will be staffed 24 hours a day and

a funeral will take place today for the oakland man who became an organ donor death. 23-year-old charles buttler jr. was killed last week while driving home in the store. before his death he requested to be an organ cone over. two men then received his liver, pan address and kidneys. today's funeral gets underway at 11:00 this morning at the center of hope community church in oakland. this weekend hundreds of people will pay their last respects to a longtime oakland city hall reporter. a memorial service will be held tomorrow in fremont for him.

the muni team line is back up and running at this hour an after early morning crash involving a san francisco police car. as lorain blanco tells us live now from the scene, four people had to be taken to the hospital. lorain. >> reporter: good morning. you can see it right now traffic is mostly back open at third and 26th in the bayview district. a small portion of one lane going northbound on third is closer to traffic, while muni crews repair a signal light. but the t line is back in service. muni and san francisco police department are both investigating how and why the light rail and the squad car collided. it happened about a quarter to 6. there were passengers

prepared to do that again here in oakland. noel walker, ktvu channel 2 news. we're following news from oakland. right now police are looking for suspects in a drive-by shooting that happened before 2 a.m. in the downtown area. investigators say bullets from a passing car hit an 18-year- old man driving another car. the victim then drove a short distance to seventh and market where he stomach. out of his vehicle and into the streets. he is now listed in stable condition. it is still not clear what led up to the gunfire. a registered sex offender suspected of killing his former girlfriend a dozen years ago, is in jail this morning. prosecutors have decided there's finally enough evidence to file murder charges against raymond wong. he is accused of killing 21- year-old alice sin of pinole in a domestic violence case. yesterday the now 40-year-old man went before a judge. wong showed no emotion as he was formally charged with the young woman's murder in 1999.

>> he is a very cocky, somebody i would consider arrogant individual, and i believe that for years he's thought he's gotten away with this. >> the body of the college student was found in a remote dirt road in nevada. this murder case against wong relied mostly on circumstantial evidence and was bogged down by the question of whether authorities in california or nevada had jurisdiction. this year the bay area's three largest cities have matched or exceeded homicide totals from 2010. oakland has had 102 homicides, compared to 92 in 2010. san francisco recorded 50 homicides so far this year, which matches last year's total. in san jose, the city has seen the highest number of homicides in 15 years with 38 in that number does not include two people killed at san jose state. more than 100 children are waking up in an oakland church this morning after taking part in a sleepover at the alan

life terms for the murder of chauncey bailey and two other men. sacramento police have arrested a man for allegedly helping himself at a bar. authorities say calvin hubbard hid inside a woman's rest room after the coconut grove grill closed tuesday night. investigators say after everyone left, he helped himself and drank heavily until he fell asleep and when he woke up, he decided he would go for ice cream but he tripped an alarm in the process. police caught him the next morning, a asleep on an employee couch. he now faces burglary charges. the owner of a popular nightspot is fighting a order from city hall prohibiting him from selling alcohol past 11:30 p.m. the city handed down the order to the list lounge. it says police received 80 calls for service since the club opened two years ago. owner says he can't be blamed for the calls. the police department says the

downtown area is oversaturated with night spots leading to fights and other problems. >> because they have large crowds of people drinking alcohol, there's just been -- associated calls being drunk in public, dui, under age drinkers, narcotics. >> crews have filed an appeal which will allow him to serve drinks until 12:30 tomorrow. that is new year's eve. the city council is going to hear appeal next month. bay area police want motorists to know they have plenty of transportation alternatives this never. public transit agencies will run later than normal. muni, the santa clara valley transit authority, caltrain and san trance will be free, bart and ac transit offer extended service, and some local caps will provide free rides. also triple-a will give you a free lift if you call and say i need a tipsy tow. and start this is weekend, an eastern contra costa county, motorists who had tao much to drink can gets a free tow.

from our newsroom, it's called the convenience fee.ites not convenient to center to pay a fee in order to pay your bill. but that's what is happening. verizon customers will soon have to pay a surcharge if you pay with a credit card. verizon announced customers who pay over the phone or online using a credit card will now center to pay $2 each time as a convenience fee. but the company also says there are ways to get around that. customers who set up an auto pay account will be off the hook. and customers who mail in a check or pay out of verizon's store in person will also avoid the fee. other wireless carriers have dried different tactics to get more people to sign up with automatic payments, including fees and even offering gift cards for signing up. there's a lot of activity on twitter about this topic. most people not happy this morning. some comparing verizon to bank of america, when it tried to add fees. reporting live, pam cook, back

to mike. >> thank you. the new york stock exchange notified american airlines' parent company did will drop the symptom before the opening bell next thursday. american airlines filed for bankruptcy last month and its stock price fell to 26 cents a share. it's never been above a dollar a share since then. they require all stocks to sell for more than a dollar to remain listed. american says its shares will continue to trade but it will be over-the-counter and a new symbol. we now know some of the 100 sears and kmart stores that will be closing next year, none in the bay area but three in southern california. florida took the hardest hit with 11 stores shutting down. sears says as many as 40 more stores will be added to the closure list later. united airlines mechanics have overwhelmingly approved a new labor deal. it includes improved job security protection, wage increases and continued health care benefits. that means the mechanics union and united continental holdings

can start talks on a single new contract that will cover mechanics who came from both airlines. united and continental combined operations in october of last year. companies that don't want to spend a lot of money but still placate employees who feel overworked are offering some unusual perks according to a recent survey. voluntary benefits including discounts on computers don't cost companies much. chair massages make employees feel more relaxed. other perks include pet insurance, funeral planning and cell phone plan discounts. the eight harry potter movie was the biggest hit of 2011 followed by transformers, dark of the moon, and twilight breaking dawn. but even most of the blockbusters did not do as well as in years passed. overall the movie industry sold slightly more than 1.25 billion tickets. that's the lowest total in 16 years. industry analysts say part of that is the economy and some of

firefighters are chasing after an arsonist in hollywood. there were nearly a dozen separate fires in the area early this morning. at least 15 cars were torched and some flames spread to homes. one firefighter was injured. a man is suspected of stealing cars and $100,000 in auto racing parts. a pickup truck race car trailer, motorcycle and all terrain vehicle were taken two weeks ago from a san pablo warehouse. most of the vehicles were recovered the next to day.
