♪[ music ] good evening. tonight we bring you the sites and sounds of the holiday season through the lens of our ktvu photojournalist. we begin with these children. this year more than 13,000 children had their wishes come true. gregg introduces us to a little boy whose christmas spirit and fight to live goes far beyond his young years.

[ cheers ] >> i been good and thank you santa. >> tell him what it says. >> children having that time of hope and looking forward to receiving something and that is why we are so happy to be a part of the make a wish foundation. and to be a part of granting wonderful wishes. >> i had swans and a doggy in my letter. >> shelby, when she was 4, had lymphoma. >> it was shattering. >> i started when i was 4, in the hospital. >> he watched disney movies all

day long and disney princesses loved to sing and she sang along with them. >> singing was kind of my coping mechanism after all the surgeries and stuff so it really lifted my spirits. >> she went full circle when she went to see disney princesses those ladies who helped her cope with the pain of treatment, she finally got to meet them in person. [ applause ] >> thank you shelby. ♪ [ music ] >> oh, just the kids. just the kids. if you do it once you will do it every year. when you see all these kids just jumping up. some of them are afraid of you but most of them are just -- their eyes are that big, it is santa claus. oh, this is my christmas. if it wasn't for this -- i don't have children of my own so the san francisco children are my own. a lot of needy kids finally get something for christmas. >> i got a barbie doll, i

thought there we be inside but it is not. >> they are so excite since we first told them you are going to go to city hall and see santa and see the firefighters and get gifts they have been looking forward to it. >> i had one one year kick me in the shins because i didn't get him what he wanted last year. we worked it out. >> a gift from california helps adorn the u.s. capitol this year. it is a 65 foot christmas tree from the stanislaus national for of the. the journey took days and had a law enforcement escort. whether you are at the capitol or at home the tree can be the centerpiece but did you know if you chop down your own tree it can benefit the environment for years to come. we introduce you to folks in search of a very green christmas.

>> which one can i pick? okay. this wuch one is coming down. >> the charlie brown christmas tree event, we are giving these trees away which we would be essentially cutting down and leaving up here. >> you like that one or another one. >> i like that one. >> you want that one. >> yeah. >> for people to take them home and enjoy a christmas tree in an environmentally sustainable way. >> togetherness. you know, blessing. >> memories. >> yeah. >> yeah, we talk about doing this for a while. the old-fashioned way, the old tradition way. >> makes my heart sing. you know, it is so cool because you know many of us don't get outside much anymore and to be able to get outside and be in nature and understand what is native and what is not native and to know that there are places like these where you can

escape and you can have peace. you can see the ocean. >> this is open space preserved for the people of california. >> it reminds me of when we used to go camping. >> this is the extra large charlie brown christmas tree her and it is just going perfect. >> great to show her when i was a kid up here and nice to share that with her. >> that is nice. >> big for air apartment don't you think? >> yeah, probably. >> we normally go to a nursery where they are already precut, and this is a new experience for us cutting down our own. >> we are out here to get his first christmas tree. well, it is an opportunity to get out and see the sites and enjoy nature and also helping to preserve what was out here and remove some of the none native species. >> there is your tree, nate. >> so nice to have people out here. >> who would not want to be

santa for a day? in its 17th year they gave people a chance to do that. we show you the cheer 1000 santas can spread. >> this is none commercial, just for fun. >> out of the closet, 10 minutes before and i am ready. >> kind of like the christmas for adults. >> i wanted to. >> this is the first time i do it. >> what do you do. >> yeah, for the naughty kids, nice kids you know they get everything good. >> maybe he will give me a boat to play with, a big boat. >> i am going to give it out. >> yeah there are rules, don't mess with kids, don't mess with police officers and don't mess with santa. pretty much don't mess with anybody, those are the rules. >> he is giving me a boat. their city had. >> we got a boat cast. >> that is good. >> we are going to santacon. >> he mentioned one of your balls. >> the balls. >> oh. >> the tennis balls. >> oh, santa. >> i think when i first started there was probably less than 300 and i think we had on facebook we had 500 rsvps so it is not a lot larger but we do a lot more. we do less destructive things. in the beginning they were more destructive but we avoid that now and now about spreading cheer. >> the best thing is seeing friends you maybe have not seen for a year and it is a red and white tie. >> i am sorry. >> each year we have a twitter announced that kinds of tells us where the santas are. you know the elves, they got

excited but technology, santa doesn't care but the elves set it up. >> he doesn't give us anything but candy, that is why we have bad teeth. >> and diabetes. >> yeah, diabetes, too. >> i don't pass up an opportunity to dress up and have fun with my friends. >> it gets worse every year you know. >> i am not doing anything. i woke up just like this. >> i doesn't matter if you drink or not or don't think, it is not actually specifically just a public crawl. that is obviously part of it. but we frequent all the businesses. santa is good for the economy. everybody is having food at the local restaurants here and taking public transportation, it is not just about a public crawl, it is about you know holiday fun and spirit. >> that is first, i will never separate again.

♪[ music ] earlier this month the governor brown announced nearly 1 billion dollars in state spending cuts, some of those buts will impact our public schools and extracurricular activities such as music programs tend to be sacrificed when money is scarce. as our photojournalist shows us a couple has been able to keep music playing out of the generosity of their own heart and pocketbook. ♪ [ music ] >> there are moments when a band of 80 kids who have only been playing for four or five

months can pick out a song and play it and even as a musician you think you know i think i know that, because they are not spot on. they are way off. they don't know they are way off. to them -- >> such happy faces. >> yeah, i mean -- >> the bobbing. heads trying to keep the beat. >> there might be a band program without stan and mary ann but it would not look like it looks now. >> i am a parent of kids who play music and they play music, they study and play in the school district. in a time where schools are losing sports and are losing arts and they are losing music programs, we have a situation here in venetia that it is

brightening and stan and mary ann are key to that. as the schools in california started to cut the budget to music programs we were able to jump in and today subsidize some of those programs that have been cut, so we offer band programs after school, they are enrichment programs. we work with the school district we have stores in and through their cooperation are able to give those kids music from programs that were cut before. so it is great. we have had a number of people come into the stores and say i want my child in a band program i simply can't afford it and mary ann and look at one another and say you know we can't turn this person down, so off goes a free trumpet and we don't charge them a rental fee. >> it is good. i just want to go home and practice my guitar and stuff. >> well, he is an awesome

teacher and i -- i hope that i will be able to be as good as him one day. >> i don't everybody know what it would be like if i had him -- if i didn't have anything to do with music. i don't even think i would be the same person. >> all my free time i just go up there and kind of hang out with pretty much everybody there. just you feel welcome there, definitely feels like home away from home i guess. >> thanks for giving me music. >> that first winter concert is all about showing up and having made it. and that -- that is like that first step when you are growing up. it is cool. >> having all those parents stand up and applaud for them. >> yeah, yeah. >> yeah. >> every child should have a gift during the holidays. many groups do what they can to make that happen. for the last 13 years the san francisco bar pilots have assembled more than 1700 bicycles to donate. a dedication that has fulfilled many christmas wishes over the years. ♪ [ music ] >> for the past 12 years the san francisco bar pilots, we have been putting together bikes for the san francisco firefighters toy drive. we are really happy to give back to the community and make an impact and do what we can in these tough economic times. we have 60 pilots that pilot ships on the bay and they are here with their tool bags building bikes. >> every year it seems to get better, a bigger turn out. >> helping a lot of people who are homeless and don't have the

money to buy things like this. >> bicycles are not the only gifts you can build. you can create anything you can imagine. the do it yourself movement is taking the place of santa's workshop for many bay area gift givers. our photo journalist takes us to the workshop where they have access to the tools to build their dream. >> here we are where everybody is buying up a storm, but why buy gifts when you can make them or recycle them? >> what are we making? >> my dream. >> people come in here and have different ideas, they have different ideas in their life and really kind of dreams they are coming inside to build. >> this where we initially prototyped our product. when we started we had our parents garage but some of the tools and some of the just the

people, we didn't have all the resources that we need so a place like this is just infinite potential. >> to design this we used the router. >> we have made it with no knowledge, you can come off the street, just a random person with varying degrees of background, we have even used a people who only used american sign language and we were able to teach them the basics. this is kind of where people bring their projects to work on. more small scale things than do >> something just broken. >> they come in every day and make some little project. >> this is a gift for my sister but i am doing it on that water

bottle for practice. >> a lot of times i found just having access to tools and learning about how things work, your ideas kind of are born out of the of that, so you know most people might not know that there is such a thing as that and what it can do so it kind of limits what they think they can create. ♪ [ music ] ♪ okay, so who ordered the cereal that can help lower cholesterol and who ordered the yummy cereal? yummy. that's yours.

>> it is a little disorganized and i can see that what they are doing a lot of it has to do with the economy. >> the generous consensus around berkeley high at least are people are kind of definitely supporting the movement but there needs to be kind of a idea of what the movement really is for. [ explosions ] >> i don't feel like that is a good way to be showing oakland. [ singing ] >> it is stressful for like us ourselves because we have to,

you know, find minimal jobs just to make friends and worry about other things like we are own welfare and like food stamped a it is like what we have to do to live now. >> pretty sad that people lost their -- like lost their job and they are really smart and they know a lot of stuff and they-and they are like good people but then they lost their jobs and that is sad. [ singing ] >> when they get a glimpse through the window into adulthood. it is a shock to them. they talk about, you know, the end of the penguins, you know global warming, war, the different wars. and then how am i going to get a job. how am i going to pay back student loans. it is frightening. and i think they are very concerned. but luckily they live in the

present and they are able to -- to find -- they are able better than adults to find happiness in the moment. ♪ [ music ] >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning, welcome to mornings on 2, i am claudine wong. >> good morning, i am mike, it is the final day of 2011 and let's bring in meteorologist rosemary orosco for a look at your saturday forecast. good morning. >> good morning. we are starting out with foig inland, visibility down to a quarter mile and most of us cooler this morning by several degrees, by 5 and 10 degrees around the bay area, our inland areas 10 to 20 degrees cooler, so a chilly start. patchy frost out there. we are looking at a nice afternoon. mild conditions, partly cloudy skies. we will pinpoint your neighborhood in a few moments, back to you. >> oakland police are investigating the shooting death of another young boy. this time the victim was five years old. allie rasmus is live near where that shooting happened with who police are looking for this

morning. >> reporter: claudine, right now police have a vague description of the gunman, an african american male in his 30s with some sort of goatee, police believe that man walked up to this lot on 50th and international where you see two patrol cars. when this shooting happened in the evening they believe this man walked up to the lot and started opening fire, just shooting his gun into the crowd. tether there was a taco truck there and when that gunman started shooting a 5-year-old boy was struck, he was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead later. at this point police don't know what the mootive was, they don't believe the child was the target and don't have reports of gunfire being exchanged so it appears the man who started shooting was the only one using a gun at the time but investigators still need more information and asking for the public's help. >> if you do have information please come forward. this is a small child who lost

his life this evening. and we are reaching out to the community. and asking and really at this point need information. >> reporter: along with the gunman police are looking for an african american woman who may have driven away from the scene with the suspect in a silver carp, possibly a pontiac. we contacted oakland police this morning to try and get some more detailed information about any developments that may have happened overnight. we are still waiting to hear back from them. as soon as we get more we will update you, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the shooting happened a mile away from where another child was shot and killed, carlos nava died from a stray bullet last august, standing with his mother at a shopping center during the drive-by shooting. police have arrested the gunman. they believe it was gang related. a memorial will be held this afternoon for each of the more than 100 homicide victims in oakland this year. the annual service starts at

3:00 at st. columbia catholic church on san pablo avenue in oakland. there will be a white cross marking every life taken by violence in the city this year. in oakland about a dozen more people have been killed this year when compared to 2010. >> a 5000 dollar reward is being offered for the monkey stolen from the san francisco zoo. zoo officials discovered the 17- year-old squirrel monkey named banana sam missing early yesterday morning. it is believed someone snuck into the back, climbed on to the roof and cut holes in the measure fencing before snatching the monkey. zoo officials call it devastating to the other monkeys and themselves. >> these animals are like i said are part of our family here and i have -- my staff and i spend our lives caring for them. they are not our pets they are like a family member. >> zoo officials also say banana sam could be endanger because squirrel monkeys are highly social animals and easily affected by stressful

joe nickels and rodney adkins and airs after the 10:00 news tonight. >> drivers across the bay area can expect to see dui check points and officers on the hunt for drunk drivers. law enforcement agencies report more than 600 dui arrests since a crack down began in mid- december. next year there will be a new deterrent, drivers convicted of three or more face the possibility of having their licenses suspended. they are holding a sobriety checkpoint tonight from 8:30 until 3:00 a.m. at new year's day, during their holiday crack down police have arrested at least 84 dui suspects, up from 65 at the same time last year. >> if you are going somewhere for new year's eve several agencies are offering incentives to ride trains or buses. in san francisco muni is offering free rides beginning at 8:00 and lasting until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. there will also be extra

service on their overnight owl routes. you can also ride for free on cal train from 11:00 until 2:15. the santa clara valley transportation authority is offering free rides between 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. you will still have to take a ride on bart. >> starting tomorrow for the new year the minimum wage in san francisco will top 10 dollars an hour, the first in the nation, it will go up to 10.25 an hour, a 32 cent increase from the current wage of 9.92 an hour. voters passed a proposition in 2003 requiring the city to increase the minimum wage every year. the amount of each yearly raise is tied to inflation. >> some new state laws taking effect tomorrow are aimed specifically at protecting minor. once they have a medical prescription anyone under 18 will not be allowed to use tanning beds. in the past they could still

welcome back to mornings on 2, every 1, the shooting happened near a taco truck owned by his father. >> this morning police are searching for two people they believe were involved, allie rasmus is live with that information. >> reporter: claudine, this is where the shooting happened, an empty lot near 55th and international. right now there is a single patrol car. they have been here overnight teaching watch over the area, yesterday evening parked in the middle of this parking lot was a taco truck. there was a number of people around and at 8:40 a man walked up to the area and started shooting. a 5-year-old boy was struck by one of the bullets, extended family members of that young victim told ktvu he is the son of the man who owns the taco truck, who is family also owns a restaurant across the street, he was transported to the hospital where he died. at this point police don't know the motive or have reports of

happened and third and 22nd streets. the train slammed into the driver's side door, two officers, the muni driver and a passenger had to be taken to the hospital but their injuries are non-life-threatening. a few hours after that pap another train collided into a mazda hatchback. that happened at third and king street. as you can see that left a department in the driver's side of the car, fortunately no one was hurt. >> the city of fremont is remembering its mayor this morning. bob wasserman died on thursday. he was 77. he became mayor in 2004 but before that severed on the city council and also served as the city's police chief, first taking the post in 1976. >> he strived to diversify the department and he did that as mayor with his pointment, a lot of people don't recognize that. >> wasserman dealt with big
