good morning, to you. welcome to a brand new day it's monday, january 2nd i'm dave clark. >> and i'm maureen naylor. pam cook is off today. let's get a quick look at weather and traffic for 2012 and turn to steve. >> thank you very much. we do have a little change today. it will mean cloudy skies. fog out there. temperatures will be cooler. could be a little bit of light rain. i know. haven't said that too often. but really it's not going to amount to too much. look for lows today to be in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. here is sal. northbound 101 traffic looking good here as you approach downtown san francisco. also the morning commute is looking good at the bay bridge toll plaza. now let's go back to dave and maureen. time is 6:01. topping our news at 6:00 crew are on the scene of a huge fire.

started last night on mosanic avenue near hate street. kraig debro is live on the scene and tells us there is one critical question that still needs to be answered. >> reporter: good morning, maureen. behind me one of the homes that burned last nights fire. you can take a look at the front window there. still have the christmas tree in the front window with the candy canes dangling down here. crews have been on fire watch all night. not just at that home but the ones next door. high ranking fire says the first crews just arrived on the scene. they could see flames coming between two homes. firefighters alerted residence to leave their homes if they hadn't gotten out on their own. crews decided to issue a call for a third alarm a few minutes later. battalion chief say there is is no evidence indicating foul play but under these circumstances an arson investigator is call. >> any time we have a larger fire, we have greater alarm

fairs we call our our arson investigators. they always come and investigate the scene. >> reporter: several residence displaced by this fire. and one person was injured. we're still checking with the fire officials to see if it wasn't more than one person. an earlier report indicated there was possibly another person injured. if you take a look at the live picture now you can see the duohomes in front of you there is another home to the left. it apores to be -- 9:appears to be damaged by water and smoke damage. but we're still checking to see if that is the case. i can't tell we'll have top check with the fire department to see if that is the case. if those people also had to stay somewhere else. time is 6:03. overnight news los angeles fire crews battled a dozen new fires that may be connected to 65 suspected other cases of arson. at the same time los angeles

police announced they have a person of interest but not saying if it's the same person shown in this surveillance video. earlier they said they wanted to talk to that man seen leaving last friday. so far injuries have been reported. 6:03. new this morning a two-car crash in berkeley sent one of those cars smashing into a bank. tara moriarty is live outside the bank to tell us why police have shifted their investigation away from the crash scene. >> reporter: we know a couple officers are at highland hospital trying to interview one of the persons that were hurt. you can see the chalk you mess. that is where officers say two cars collided with each other and one of them came all the way over here. smashed into the bank and the light pole. it happened right in front of

the wells fargo bank around 1:00 this morning. police say one person was taken to the hospital. we don't know the exten of their gyres. we don't know -- police had closed off the intersection here while they conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. everything is back open now. we'll let you know if we have any dates. time now 6:05. a san francisco man is being treated for injuries now after being run down by a car overnight on interstate 80. police say the man that was wearing no shirt was hit near 4th street just before 11:00 last night. the driver of the car did stop and cooperated with police. police say the man was knocked unconscious but appeared to be breathing when police arrived on the scene. we have no other details about his condition this morning. it's now five minutes after 6:00. the water is back on again at two east bay companies after a

water main break in hercules disrupted service. a 24-inch water main broke yesterday afternoon. it knocked out water service to conocophillips and c & h sugar and several area homes. a utility spokesperson says a parallel line is getting water to the businesses. later this morning repair crews will be returning to finish the repairs. a $25,000 reward is being offered this morning to find the gunman that shot and killed five-year-old boy in oakland. gabriel martinez junior was outside of his families taco truck friday night. when a man who had just ordered food from the truck started shooting. the gunman got into a silver.yeah with a -- silver pontiac with a woman inside. martinez is the third child to die from gunfire since august.

police were called to 14th and franklin streets yesterday morning they found a woman with a gunshot wound to her hand. as they investigated, a car drove up with another woman who had been shot in the leg. police say the shootings are unrelated. there is also a shooting on lyndon street that sent one person to the hospital. supporters of the occupy movement used the third anniversary of oscar grant's death to draw parallels between his killings and police treatment of protestors. >> we will do it for oscar's sake. i am oscar grant. >> about 100 people gathered at frank ogawa plaza yesterday afternoon for a rally and march to the fruitvale bart station. a few carried signs with grant's picture. their movement faces the same violent treatment from police that lead to graham's death. >> these occupy movements have been sort of really effected by

police brutality. >> grant's family also lead a hem moral service at the fruitvale bart station. his mother says she wants to keep his memory alive. the police officer convicted of involuntary manslaughter for shooting grant completed his sentence in june. 6:07. a strict new law to protect people from secondhand smoke in the city of alameda takes effect today. this ordnance banned smoking in public place. smoking is also banned in new multiunit housing including out on balconies and porches. violators face fines between $100 and $500. in san jose residence are adjusting to the new ban on plastic bags. grocery stores and retail stores can no longer give out single use plastic bags. that is leaving customers with

it happened a couple days before christmas. the injuries could have been a lot worse. fortunately the arrow did not pierce the cats skull. and the owner of the cat says a full recovery is expected. time is 6:15. with the iowa caucuses one day away the presidential candidates are making a final push for votes today. the latest poll shows mitt romney barely ahead of ron paul with rick santorum in third place. newt gingrich is fighting back against a series of negative tv ads from a political action committee that supports romney. >> for someone decides to spend that much money for negative ads on one candidate is amazing. >> rick santorum has sped up. each candidate hoping a good showing in iowa will give a

boost to their campaign. history shows the iowa caucuses are not necessarily a good predictor of who will become the parties nominee. >> iowa doesn't have a terrific record of predicting winners or losers. yes they got barack obama right four years ago but they also went with mike huckabee. >> the majority of voters in the state don't participate. only 17% of registered voters showed up for the democratic and republican caucuses in 2008. our time 6:17. iran's navy says they successfully test fired two long range missiles today. the surface to air missile during a drill in international waters near the strategic. these maneuvers are a practice for closing the straight if the west tries to block iran's oil sales. korea at a turning point after the death of north korean

we didn't see much rain in december. one of the driest decembers ever for south lake tahoe. they only had a trace. driest december ever for south lake tahoe. reno nothing. no rain or snow. that is the driest december since 1883. a lot of cloud cover over us. the system will drag across us. there is a few returns on live storm tracker two. i doubt anything is reaching the ground. it's slicing through mendocino county and lake county. 40s temperatures have been going up due to the cloud cover. a little hint of a south breeze. we'll have a cooler day today. behind that i wish i could say there is something coming in for rain. i don't see it. it looks very quiet. but temperatures today will cool off under cloudy hazy skies. there could be a few showers to the north. the extended forecast after today night and morning fog.

good morning. right now if you are driving at the toll plaza it is night. it's much lighter than usual. time is 6:25. several earthquakes in ohio forced officials to shut down fluid injection oil wells. a 4.0 quake saturday is linked to drilling or fracking operations. the quake hit shortly after 3:00 p.m. in the youngstown area. it's the 11th earthquake to hit the area since march. we do have other disposal wells. that we've had for 20 years. and never, ever had a problem with an earthquake or spill or any problems whatsoever. >> the ohio department of natural resources director said fracking is not causing the quakes but sought the injection

that game from candle stick park saturday january 14th. tickets go on sale tomorrow morning. across the bay the season ended sadly for the oakland raiders. all they needed to make a playoff was to beat the san diego chargers yesterday. but in front of the sold out coliseum crowd the raiders lost to one of their main rivals 38- 26. that defeat included giving up a 105 kickoff return for a touchdown. the raiders by the way haven't made the playoffs in a decade. as for college bowl game action today will mark a memorable game for andrew luck. the fourth ranked cardinal are taking on the third ranked oklahoma cardinals. that game starts at 5:30 this evening. luck has already said this will be his last collegic game before turning pro. time is 6:27. overnight crash sent a car slam into the side of a berkeley bank. coming up next the live report on how bad the damage was and

good morning, to you. welcome back. we thank you for joining us on ktvu channel 2 morning news i'm dave clark. >> and i'm maureen naylor. pam cook is off today. the time is 6:30. >> there is a lot to tell you about. fire crews are still busy. they are still at the scene of a huge fire in san francisco's hate ashbury district. this started last night near hate street. ktvu kraig debro is there now with the very latest on the continuing investigation. good morning. >> reporter: a little bit of changing of the guard here at

mosanic and waller. fire crews have been here all night. one crew will stay for a few hours just making sure that none of the fire flairs back up. and then they will change out with another crew. crews looking inside the garage of one of the homes that is damaged. not sure what they are looking for right now. now there is three homes you can see that are damaged. one here and there and there. there are two units in the far home to the left. you can see when you go closer to it the ceiling has been punched out on that home. what firefighters are doing it's not clear at that fourth unit suffered damage. first calls started coming around 8:00 p.m. last night. fire crews got here on the scene. they tole us they saw a lot of flames coming between two of the buildings here. they quickly called for a third alarm. a lot of the buildings evacuated. we heard from the people inside the home fire crews alerted him to get out and get out quickly.

here in san francisco the homes are very close together. there is significant risk of flames jumping from one home to the other. lked chief he said the origin and cause is under investigation. there might be hint where is the fire started based on what they saw when they got here. >> we arrived on scene. we had a lot of fire between both buildings here. >> reporter: and those two billing -- buildings are right there. you you can see the two buildings he was talking about are the yellow one and green one there. those buildings there one of the firefighters told me on the scene it doesn't look that bad right here. you two around the back you would be totally surprised at what you see. around back the damage is a lot worse. you take a look at this home right here you can still see some of the christmas celebrations a tree in the window. candy canes even up there.

cars were not damaged. garage is slightly damaged but go around back you would be surprised. we got calls into the fire department to find out how many people are injured, how many people are displaced. we know several people of these homes were displaced. reporting live in san francisco kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. 6:32. san jose family needs a new place to live after a fire left them homeless. elizabeth was with her two teenager children and a friend when the smoke detector went off. a neighbor filmed cell phone video of the flames engulfing the house on north fifth street. everyone got out safely. that home was badly damaged. >> i lived here for five years. you know this happening it's tragic. >> firefighters say this fire

was al to fight because historic homes -- damage is estimated to be about a half million dollars. time is 6:33. new this morning a crash involving two cars in berkeley intersection sent one of them slamming into the side of a bank. tara moriarty is life this morning. >> reporter: we are getting a better idea how this accidents unfolded. you can see where it's chalky, messy, and that is where police officers say the two cars crashed and one of them skidded. slammed over here in the side of the bank. you can see where the chunks of concrete are missing. now we're here off the corner of university in san pablo avenue where this happened around 1:00 in the morning. police say a car slammed into the bank and a light pole. we spoke to berkeley police they say one person was transported to highland hospital. there are officers at the hospital right now interviewing

that person. we don't know if alcohol played a role in the accident. police closed off the intersection here while they conducted the investigation and cleared the scene. everything is back open now. now an officer did come by earlier this month to tick some measurements. we'll let you know if there are any updates in this investigation. we're live in berkeley i'm tara moriarty. time 6:35. some pretty tense moments. a private pilot flying from southern california to here in the bay area was intercepted by two u.s. fighter jets. that is after air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the 172. now when the air traffic controllers couldn't talk with the pilots as he neared month ray a pair of f-16s were sent out to intercept that plane. radio contact was reestablished. the private plane did land safely. 6:35. emergency responders in san jose were kept busy this new years because of a string of

violence. several stabbings and shootings happened on new years eve. one was stabbed at midnight. then on ridge glen ray gunfire wounded a man and juvenile. on skull drive a fight broke out among teenagers and six of them went to the hospital with stab wounds. >> i have been here more than 15 years. and it's not like that. it's not like that. maybe it's people that come and decide to make parties and it happens. >> three more incidents happened in the early morning hours. police call the violence unfortunate but not unusual for new years eve. 6:36. swat teams are now swarming around mount ranier national park. coming up for you at 6:45 the search for the man authorities believe gunned down a park ranger and why they could be in for along search. there is no word when san francisco zoo plans to show off a squirrel monkey. the 17-year-old named banana

sam was taken from his enclosure late friday night or early -- late thursday night or early friday morning. banana sam was scared and hungry and it may be several days before he's allowed back in the cage with his 17 fellow squirrel monkeys. a $5,000 reward was offered for the monkeys safe return. 6:37. a teenage oakland raiders fan in the hospital after falling out of the stands yesterday. 17-year-old juan was leaning over the coliseum railing trying to get the attention of some of the raiders players after yesterday's loss. the raiders spokesperson said he fell about 15 feet down into the ground. he landed on some soft dirt. they are also saying he never lost consciousness and the team was told he's going to be fine. time is 6:37. the family of brieon stow has issued a new statement to mark the new year. family members are thanking the many people that sent christmas

presents and cars to the injured giants fan. they are praying that their emotional pain will ease in 2012. therapists are working with stow on a daily basis at a rehabilitation teaching him how to speak and move again. the family admits he may never fully recover from last years beating. 6:38. san francisco the first city in the whole country to raise minimum wage above $10 an hour. that is because of a ballot measure that voters passed ten years ago. it requires city employers to raise the minimum wage each year using a formula tied to inflation. out of that formula workers must be paid $10 .24 an hour. last year minimum wage was $9.92 an hour. there are a lot of new state laws in effect now in this new year. they are effecting almost everybody in california. one of the most controversial laws taking effect in 2012 involves child safety in cars.

children are now required to be strapped into booster seats until they reach the age of eight. in the past booster seats were mandated only for kids until they reached the age of six or weighed 60 pounds which ever came first. almost every parent has some opinion about this. >> we want them to be as safe as possible. >> nathan, do you want to sit in a booster seat? again? no. >> some other laws are targeting teenagers. they can no longer hop into a tanning booth and they can't buy certain cough medicines. california schools has to teach about gay and lesbians in the classroom. they also have to have a plan to stop bullying in schools. they were required to come up with a detail plan to address concussions suffered by student athletes. 6:39. a san jose solar power company is canceling the plans for a new plant in michigan.

the $177 million project is on hold. he blames the struggling economy and slow down in overseas demand for solar panels. when the plant was first proposed in 2009 they said the project would create 500 new jobs. 6:39. one of the most dangerous roads here in the bay area will also possibly be more expensive as well. traffic fines have doubled on a stretch of vasco road which connects contra costa and alameda counties. the extra fines took effect new years day. they will last through 2016. crews are also continuing to add safety improvements out there which include concrete medians. 20,000 cars use that road every day. it is now 20 minutes before 7:00. sal, your vacation is over. for a lot of people they have today off because markets are closed because the holiday fell on sunday. >> that is right.

francisco hate ashbury district. this one started last night near hate street. the big flames started in one building and then quickly spread to two more. at least one person was hurt. investigators are still looking for the cause of that fire. and there have been a dozen more suspicious fires overnight in los angeles. that is after a rash of suspected arsons in several neighbors. l.a. police say they detained someone who may possibly know more about the fires. than they do. your time is 6:47. heavily armed swat teams are carefully searching mount ranier national park for a gunman suspected of killing a park ranger. authorities in washington state say 24-year-old benjamin barnes opened fire yesterday morning after being pulled over for not stopping at a snow chain check point. >> he immediately made a u-turn and came out and opened fire on her. put multiple rounds inside of
