hazardous chemicals were illegally stored in a dumpster and now police are trying to determine how they got there. hazardous material teams were called in after three workers got sick after unloading a dumpster. >> when they started com pressing the thing burst or burst open and -- some fumes came out. >> reporter: they were treated released. hazmat workers determined the toxic chemicals. fiberglass resin, chemicals for cleaning. >> this concentrated, it's a large amount. this is certainly not what you would have under your kitchen sink for household cleaning. >> reporter: they are trying to determine who put them in the dumpster by looking to identity the manufacturer and businesses that sold them. >> that's a significant environmental hazard and it is actually against the law to discard material like that.

. >> reporter: one official said people often threw away things not suitable for dumpsters but nothing this dangerous. >> >> there is new information at this hour about a police chase in san jose that injured a half dozen officers. maureen naylor live with the new information she just received about the officers, the suspect and how they were all caught. >> reporter: since our last report about an hour ago we have a lot of new information we have gathered, first police have increased the number of officers hurt from four to six saying five had minor injuries, one with serious injuries. we have a new photograph into the newsroom that we want to show you. police say the photograph is of alejandro gonzalez and they say he led them on a dangerous chase through san jose today. the chase ended with a stolen

gmc surrounded by several patrol cars. it started at this gas station where police say gonzalez car jacked the suv from a 68-year- old man. >> i saw -- young guy on the top of the old man and on the blood come out and broke the -- and the old man try to keep the keys. >> reporter: the suspect drove away and rammed this patrol car trapping the officer inside. fors had to cut the door off to get him out. from there the man next rammed two patrol cars around capitol and madden and hit a 4th at allen rock. they finally managed to stop him at allen rock when an officer fired a taser. >> then another guy and then it would have the cop cars both kind of t boned him. pinned him in to the car and they rushed him with the gun,

pulled him out and then -- that was the end. >> reporter: in one case an officer moved to protect a family in a crosswalk. >> we are lucky that nobody was hurt outside police department. that nobody was killed and that we were able to take him into custody without anybody being seriously hurt. >> reporter: about 15 minutes ago police said they can't release the capacity injuries of the one officer in the hospital but say he is in a lot of pain and getting an mri. gonzalez now faces charges of carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon a police officer. reporting live in san jose, maureen naylor. >> a stretch of highway 152 is closed but is expected to reopen shortly after a big rig overturned. the tractor trailer flipped near frazier lake drive after 2:30 spilling 21,000 pounds of card board boxes and leaking diesel fuel on to the highway. the traffic has been blocked in

both directions but the chp said it hopes to reopen the highway in 30 minutes. no other vehicles were involved. . >> police in oakland are renewing their call for help in the case of a 5-year-old shot and killed outside his father's taco truck. members of the community are holding a second vigil on international boulevard where the truck was parked last friday night when someone shot and killed gabriel martinez junior. investigators are frustrated because nobody is coming forward to help identity the shooter. if san francisco city officials say violent crime there remains at a historic low. the city's 50 homicides last year were the second lowest since the 60s. violent crime overall fell 6% from 2010, rape is down 12% and assault is down 9%. the mayor and police chief credited community policing more interaction with the public and outreach for people at risk such as the mentally

ill. >> arson investigators have determined the blaze that burned through three buildings was accidental. residents watch from the street as flames consumed the buildings near waller late on new year's day. officials say investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the fire. damage is thought to be at $2.6 million. >> the images are you about to see pretty much tell the story about the serious lack of snow in the sierra. the department of water resources set out for the first sierra snow survey today and as you can see there was almost nothing to measure, just over a tenth of an inch of snow with water content at 19% of normal. that is the lowest january number since the 1930s. the previous record was set back in 1987. >> we had very low snow accumulations up until march. we this a huge march. it's not something you want to really count on. >> water managers say one bright spot for the state's water supply has been water

then the surfers have 24 hours to get here. many say the swell should be good for this friday's scheduled opening ceremony at 2 p.m. >> might be the biggest swell, the season so far. they call it for 20, 25-footer which is like, 35, to 50-foot face so it'll be like the real deal. >> reporter: some of the world's best who still hope to compete one day have also come to the united states as fans. one surfer from south africa said the contest is only for the best of the best. >> if you fall you get down and hard to get back un. >> reporter: they won't be able to watch from the beach or bluffs as in previous years. waves knocked out people two years ago and at least one fan fell from a cliff. many are upset at the decision. >> for them to tell people no they can't come watch, i don't understand. you know -- that is the

excitement. >> reporter: at this point a town festival will be held so people with watch through a live feed. a public meet willing be held thursday. as for the contest i just talked to the organizer who said he will definitely not start this friday. he said the waves big enough but there is to much wind. so after friday's opening ceremony we will wait. live, robert honda. >> occupy oakland is facing a new threat of eviction. about a month ago they were given a permit to set up a tp and a table at the plaza under season conditions. today police revoked that permit because they say the area is a tracting illegal activity. all of this after ten were arrested last friday, police say that case they weren't letting public work crews to clean the area near the tp. >> the president signed a law to tighten oil and gas pipeline regulations, its legislation aims to close gaps in safety regulation that came to light

after the san bruno explosion. the explosion also prompted a new state law that took effect on january 1st. it requires the utilities to install remote voluntary shut off valves that run through highley populated areas. >> new connector to the airport is starting to take shape. concrete columns going up along the road. those will support the three mile elevated track between the bart station and the airport. supporters say the project will create jobs but critics say the price tag keeps on up creasing and the job estimates have already been lowered. >> three universities on a list of the best values in the united states. uc berkeley ranks 7th in the ranking of public colleges. ucla was 9th and us san diego 10th. the schools moved up this year despite tuition increases because the magazine gave more weight to admission and graduation rates. >> later this week organizers

prevent ptsd. shares of cisco went up. jp morgan upgraded its recommendation on the tech giant. it also raised its target price for the stock to $21 a share. analysts say a perfect storm of problems including major layoffs is not likely to be repeated in 2012. the shares rose 3.5% to close at $18.66 a share. wall street welcomed the new year with a good first day of trading. the dow surged 180 points, the nasdaq 44 points. invetors were encouraged by gains for bank of america and caterpillar. >> the early results continue to come in from the iowa republican caucuss. here are the latest numbers in to the ktvu newsroom. ron paul is now ling with 24%

of the votes, romney is tied with santorum with 23% and gingrich has 13%. back here the governor's proposed tax initiative has some with deep pockets. the first financial filing shows the governor has raised $1.2 million in just the past two weeks for the ballot meat measure. it came from nine donors including a hospital group. the measure would temporarily raise the state sales tax and increase insum taxes on wealthy california residents. >> few clouds out there right now, another beautiful day from january in the bay area, temperatures got into the mid60s. few high clouds, jet stream still resides far to the north and that's why there is no rain in the forecast this week. that's were we are forecasting more very mild, if even warm temperatures for tomorrow. these are the highs from today.

temperatures tomorrow will probably the warmest we see all week. we could see numbers in to the mid60s. valley fog issue this morning. we had a dense fog in the bay. dense fog in parts of the inland bay valley, look for it again tomorrow. we talked about sfo in the earlier newscast. big flight delays because of this valley fog. kind of creeping in to the bay. slows it down. mess was the ferry traffic, if you have a ferry boat you may find delays. as long as we stay mild and dry, we will get the patchy fog. that's just the way it is. light winds and fog reforms. we will see it in on the bay. even a little bit of coastal fog. we have an interesting mix of weather patterns with just a little bit of fog, high pressure the main thing that will not go away. wednesday, looks like tuesday, looks like monday, looks like sunday, it's just like this, high pressure bringing fog,

poor air quality, freezes conditioning, even record heat and that's where we are. this thing stay aroundt. will give us subtle vairations, tomorrow it'll be increase in temperatures. 65 in santa rosa. 62 concord, the numbers probably -- i think the warmest of the week. maybe some warmer numbers as we head into thursday, friday n is -- you get the idea. look at all the mid60s. up mid60s. south you may find some -- five- day like n few clouds here and there. valley fog and coastal fog definitely in the game and along the coast large surf. its going to hang out for a while. the big high pressure blocking all the storms, they are -- no rain. big waves really through the weekend into next week. no rain in this week or in the ten day forecast. >> its been so dry and warm

. bay area police say they hope parents will comply with a new law requiring car seats for kids eight years old and younger unless they are taller than 4-foot 9. the law went into effect on january 1st before that booster seats were only required until children turned six or 60 pounds.

safety experts say kids in seats are less likely to be injured in a crash because the seatbelt fits better. >> does make sense especially with a little one like that it does -- lift them up and -- the bet fits better. >> driver dear sir be fined up to $475 and get a point on their record if their children aren't properly buckled up. >> a lot of talk about the raiders but they are saying we aren't quite cleaning house yet. >> in typical raider fashion we don't know for sure but i think it's safe to say a definite expected hard off season for the raiders. a local radio station is reporting the defensive coordinator. was fired along with assistants woodson. ross and -- late this afternoon. they are quote as saying -- this that is not true. we will wait to see.

turns out we will be able to recognize at least one raider when the season starts. one a i should say. that would be crisp. he has signed a two year deal and it's -- $14 million. 16 homers and -- or the -- meantime it's not the end of the line for the familiar face to raider fans. turner, has the chargers have decided not to fire him. turner's chargers have -- get out of -- with an 8-8 record. it's possible that his win over the raiders on sunday eliminated them savored his job. is he a martinez native.
