telegraph. tara moriarty is live where police believe there could be a new development. >> reporter: there's a police car here and down the street there's two officers standing there at the base of the cliff there. the police say they believe he's still in the area where the search light is on the hillside. but they were using their flashlights scanning the cliff to see if there are any routes that the suspect might have tried to -- used to escape. last night a woman called 911 staying a mom had stolen her ring. the building management confronted the suspect, he jumped over the cliff. he had two backpacks on him. police don't know if it's -- if he's armed.

>> it's pretty treacherous. we're not gonna risk anyone's life to get a burglary suspect right now. we'll wait until daylight. >> reporter: the police officers are on the balcony. they are looking down. they are trying to see if they can see any signs of how he might escape. we're stationed near chestnut and montgomery. police found clothes and wauptder bottles -- water bottles. we are not sure if those items are from the suspect. if so, he's probably pretty familiar with the area. he's tried to sneak back up the hillside a few times. police are really keeping an eye on them. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. just about 90 minutes ago, san jose police called off an knight search. sheriff deputies say a suspect surrendered without a fight. that ended the search which started about 1:00 this morning

after a traffic stop. investigators say the suspect ran after getting pull over. he was wanted in connection with a robbery. now he's facing additional charges of resisting arrest. a suspect is in the santa clara county. no injuries to report. 7:02. just eight votes decided the winner of the iowa republican caucuses. mitt romney narrowly beat rick santorum. statistically, they are tied at 25%. ron paul came in third, with 21%. newt gingrich came in fourth with 23%. rick perry, 10% and michele bachmann, 5%. most of the candidates are heading to new hampshire ahead of the prime there next tuesday. coming up at 7:15, the announcement from michele bachmann that may put into question the future of her

campaign and other signs another candidate may be on his way out. california's legislature reconvenes today. lawmakers will have to fick out how to solve the state's $12 billion budget -- figure out how to solve the state's $12 billion budget. other items, whether to raise the minimum wage to $8.50, a bill allows regulation of health insurance rates and if republicans can get a spending cap passed. well, san jose mayor chuck reed is working on a plan to end a growing battle over the city's pot club. he's considering allowing more pot clubs in the future. the city council introduced an ordinance that would reduce those clubs from 100 to just 10. they are gathering signatures and arit would lead to

marijuana superstores that federal agents would eventually shut down. well, at least for now, no one will be getting that reward money for the return of banana sam to the zoo. the "chronicle" says they are examining the circumstances surrounding this. the monkey was taken from his catch. a man was talking -- walking and said he coaxed the monkey out and put him in his backpack. some people are skeptical about that. it's a new fight involving facebook. one bay area city feels, bigger is not better. kraig debro is live with more. why the concern? >> reporter: well, east palo alto residents are concerned

because they feel the congestion might be an issue and they also feel some people might lose their homes with in expansion. behind me is willow road and once you get off the road, it's facebook. the traffic here is part of the problem, after the least east palo alto says -- that's what east palo alto says. now, what east palo alto is talking about right now, potentially suing facebook over congestion and over the potential of losses of homes in this area. menlo park is even conducting an environmental impact report because facebook has plans to expand to 6600 employees by 2015. right now they have to about -- they have about 2,000. on willow road but in a few

francisco county jail. claudine wong is outside the jail now to explain why the sheriff has dreamed up this for the last 32 years. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes. it's been a long time in the making. we actually talked to a contractor working in the jail. it's behind the new jail sitting there. it may not come as a big surprise but that old jail is riddled with asbestos and lead paint, crews have been protesting themselves. sheriff hennessey told me the place was literally being held together by duct tape. but the problems found by then wereler decades old. sheriff hennessey promised to close it in 1979, in his first campaign for sheriff. the supervisor in charge of

abatement working inside the jail talked about what conditions were like now. >> it's filled with a lot of asbestos, and so we wear a purified air respirator. we don't even want to breathe the fibers in there. >> reporter: you've had to, i'm sure, do a lot of abatement projects. how bad is this one in comparison? >> this one here is saturated. we have air monitors and we have different personnel wearing equipment in the breathing zone. >> reporter: he says today the wrecking ball will hit the build but this will simply be symbolic. getting everything ready for full demolition will take nine to 12 weeks. so we still have times. why today? well, it all comes back to the

sheriff. he promised to get this demolished during his campaign. 7:31. in overnight news, an investigation is underway into what caused several trucks to catch fire at a fed-ex facility in petaluma. firefighters spent about 15 minutes putting the fire out. at one time, flames threatened a large diesel truck loaded with 5,000 gallons of fuel. there were no injuries and no packages were burned. also overnight, a christmas tree was set on fire after it was left at the curb for pick up. our ktvu news crew captured video of the tree on fire just before midnight on bay and mission streets in san francisco. a man was talking by and kicked

the burning tree away from a scooter which appears to have suffered some damage. firefighters did arrive and put out some flames. search teams in the lake tahoe area say there's little hope finding a man still alive. he fell out of a canoe. that triggered a search. the man's girlfriend swam to safety but he was not able to make it to shore. the search was suspended late last night. the first sierra snow survey of the season was very easy. there wasn't much to survey. there was just one -- there was just 1/7th of water.

the mt. diablo school district has hired a law firm to appeal a judge's ruling in a small claims court case. the judge ruled the district should pay $1,000 in damages plus $85 in legal fees to a woman whose 5-year-old daughter was dropped off at the wrong bus stop by the bus driver more than a year ago.

welcome back. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. it's wednesday, january 4th. happening right now -- it's been a really long night for san francisco police. they've been trying for hours to convince a barry suspect hiding off telegraph hill to give himself off. tara moriarty has been out there, too. they are at the scene. what are police saying now? >> the police are trying to establish some choke points, some areas where they believe the suspect may try to escape. they want to cut him off. they believe he's hiding out right over my shoulder here. see where the truck is? that's where they believe he is right now. joining me live is the lieutenant with -- with the police department. this burglary suspect has been hide for almost 15 hours. what's the next game plan? >> right now we're trying to keep him contained. i got off the phone just now with the crime unit.

the walls are about to come tumbling down. claudine wong is outside in old -- an old san francisco jail, where in just a couple of hours a wrecking ball will bring an era to an end. >> reporter: good morning. we're in san bruno where the jail is located. if you haven't been out here, i want to give you an idea what you are looking at. in the front here, you have the new county jail. that's been opened since 2006 when the inmates moistured in there after the -- after the old jail was there.

the wrecking ball is set to go about 10:30 this morning. but i also want to pan way off on the property to the field and to some houses that are next door. there are residential neighbors near here. when you talk about taking down a building like this one, you also have to talk about things like asbestos and paint. they started work a couple of weeks. it will take weeks to clean everything. crews are wearing masks and their own air supplies with others constantly monitoring that air. >> they don't want to knock it down until it's actually been an abatement tonight and air quality will -- comes in and does an air quality test.

>> reporter: nine to 12 weeks, not really that long when you consider the history of this jail. this is video of 2006 when the jail closed. but it was all the way back in 1979 when michael hennessey was campaigning for the first time for sheriff. since then there's been a lot of failed bond measures, a court order and it took 32 years to get to this day. the wrecking ball gets a crack at this building. the process of cleaning up and tearing down in reality will still take weeks but this will be sheriff hennessey's final act. he steps down tomorrow and hands over the -- over the reins. back to you. an overnight police manhunt in san jose ended a few minutes ago. sheriff's say the suspect surrendered without a fight.

that ended the car of that started -- the car of that -- the search that started around 1:00 this morning. the suspect is now in the santa clara county jail and no injuries were reported. mayor chuck reed is working on a plan to end a grow battle over the city's new pot club rule. he says he's considering allowing more pot clubs in the future. the city council recently approved ordinances that would reduce the pot clubs from 100 to just 10. the critics have collected about 60,000 signatures. they are arguing that it would lead to marijuana superstores and that federal agents would be shutting them down e-- eventually -- eventually. this was the scene on willow, not far from the new

facebook headquarters. we're told the driver safely escaped. no one was injured but traffic on willow is down to one lane. the fire started about 20 minutes ago in the truck which was full of towels. we did the -- the truck driver told kraig debro who was on the scene that he started smelling some smoke coming from the engine area of the truck but it's unclear exactly what sparked the flames. the suspect in the spring of los angeles arsons is scheduled to appear in court. harry burkhart was arrested and is being held on one count of arson. but investigators say the german man may have set more than 50 fires. investigator say burkhart may have been upset after his mother was eighted. she could be extradited to germany to face charges -- fraud charges. a german in official says torching cars has become a common crime for agegy people

the run for a minor offense, led officers on a high-speed pursuit across several neighborhoods yesterday. police say the carjacking suspect was deline the -- behind the wheel of a stolen suv when he rammed into four patrol cars. 40 minutes later, officers finally brought the chase to an end on alum rock avenue. one officer suffered serious injuries but is expected to make a full recovery. overnight news, an investigation continues into what caused several trucks to catch fire at a fed-ex facility in petaluma. firefighters quickly put these flames out. at one point, the flames threatened a large diesel truck
