. a san jose nurse facing murder charges made her first court appearance today. 40-year-old segal sidiq is accused of killing her mother with a machete. the arraignment is to be postponed to allow more time to review the case. she will plead not guilty. >> it is a case where you have a woman charged, as i say, a very heinous crime. she deserves allç the legal protections we have here in the united states. >> the mercury news is reported that her partner had ended their relationship. sidiq is back in court in two weeks. a shooting in oakland last night turned out to be first homicide of the year. the victim was found on east 25th street before 9 last night with several gunshot wounds. he later died at the hospital.

one neighbor told ktvu she herd three gunshots. police say they do not have any suspects. the man arrested after a wild chase with san jose police on tuesday is charged with 13 counts including attempted murder. he's being held without bail. during the case gonzalez used an suv he had carjacked to ram four police cars. one police officer was hospitalized and has since been released.ç the job market is showing more signs of improvement. the labor department reports 372,000 people filed for unemployment benefits at end of the year. that's dropped by 13,000. the unemployment rate for december should come out sometime tomorrow. on wall street today, the dow closed down two points but the nasdaq was up 21 points.

governor jerry brown unveiled a new budget today and while the deficit is smaller this year than last deep cuts are made if voters reject his call to race taxes. >> it's not a fortunate telling budget. >> governor jerry brown says hiç plan to eliminate the state's deficit depends on you. as a vote are and a taxpayer. >> because we're going to assume that we're going to get the temporary income tax and the temporary sales tax we have to put in trigger cuts, otherwise the budget would not be balanced. in other words, if voters don't approve a one half per cent sales tax increase and a tax increase on the rich deep deep cuts will have to be made. >> the schools, the courts, the university, and there's some state public safety services. >> so is the governor playing

governor. it contains $4.2 billion in cuts with health and human services taking the biggest hit. 946 million would be sliced from cal works. the health careç program faces cuts as well. the technical glitch mistakenly posted the budget to public website today. if you're one of the hundreds of millions of people who use facebook a word of warning tonight. a security company says some 45,000 facebook accounts have been hacked and infected with a worm. most of the compromised account are in great britain and france. the worm is called ramnet and it works by stealing the names and pass words of users. >> they want to get into your account so everyone who trusts you trusts them automatically. that way they can then spread

. a little more than an hour ago police removed a tent from outside oakland city hall. protesters laid it out earlier but didn't set it up. security guards called police and officers removed it. the last few weeks have been calm when it comes to occupy oakland protesters but there have been squirmishes in the past several hours involving police and the protesters. what the demands are and how the city is responding. >> move city hall! >> reporter: officersç forced e open doors shut. protesters tried unhinging the doors, vandalizing with a pyre of pliers atepting to get inside. city officials agreed to meet

. new at 10, trying to find parking in oakland's chinatown can be a real headache and some business owners say it's costing them at a time they can least afford it. we're live with a new plea they're making to city leaders. >> reporter:ç this is how mostf the street parking works around here in chinatown. you pay $2 an hour at one of these kiosks but the spaces can fill up fast so some businesses are asking the city to crack down on cheaters and give the paying customers a break. almost as familiar as the sights and sounds as smells of chinatown. >> finding parking is really hard. >> reporter: is the perpetual shortages of street parking. >> parking in chinatown is a challenge. >> i think not only for chinatown but i talk to many commercial districts, they're all suffering. >> reporter: he says many of these spaces remain occupied for

in chinatown. they have a five-minute grace period forç people using meters like this one. san fransisco's chinatown is getting ready to celebrate the year of the dragon. the department of public works crews were out before dawn watching the chinatown gates. they cleaned up graffiti and keend up trash. the parade is set for saturday, february 11th, and you can watch it here on ktvu. a plan calls for a $6 million complex on five acres in blair park right next to moraga avenue. the project would be privately funded but some residents say the piedmont council passed the plan and the environmental impact report without giving residents enough time to review them. the white house announced a plan today to provide thousands of summer jobs toç teenagers.

the $1.5 billion program could create more than 180,000 job and internship opportunities for low income youth. however, only about half of the positions would be paid. the proposal is currently held up in congress as politicians are arguing over spending cuts. if it is passed, it would target one of the most underemployed segments of the united states. >> those people between 16 and 24 years of age where the unemployment raid is astronomical. it's 16%. >> the labor department is setting up a website for teenagers to find jobs. it's expected to go on line within the next two months. president obama outlined a new strategy for the united states military. he calls for major cuts while promising to keep the u.s. the foremost military power in the world. >> reporter: in a historic first theç president stood before reporters in the pentagon briefing room to announce his

plan to cut the defense budget. >> as we look beyond the wars in iraq and afghanistan, we'll be able to ensure our security with smaller conventional ground forces. >> reporter: flanked by the defense secretary and joint chiefs president obama laid out the new priorities. the focus will shift toward the asia pacific, toward air and sea power. the army and marine corps will get smaller. the f 35 fighter jet production will be slowed, not stopped. military retirement and health benefits will be overhauled. >> there's no question that we have to make some tradeoffs. >> reporter: the strategy review released today indicates that for the first time since world war ii the pentagon will not plan to fight two ground wars >> we have had a two ground war strategy for 20 years. now we don't. >> if they're going to fight one war maybe they have the resources for that but then

again should we ask the north koreans to sit by while we perhaps have to confront the iranians or someone else? it just doesn't add up. >> make no mistake, we will have the capability to confront and defeat more than 1 adversary at a time. >> reporter: anticipating criticism, president obama went out of his way to emphasize that even with these cuts, his defense budget will be larger than it was at the end of the bush administration and larger than the next ten countries combined. . many solano county residents are wondering if it will affect travis air force base andç airfield. travis is the biggest employer with some 14,000 people working on the base. a hot of small businesses depend on travis, including the barber shop across the street. he hopes travis will be spared.
