gunshots ring out in the soma district of san francisco. we'll tell you why it took two hours to find the suspect and even longer to get the neighborhood back to normal. he's being sworn in as san francisco's new sheriff on sunday. but right now, he's the focus of a criminal investigation. ford motter company has announced big plans for the silicon valley. also, the disturbing report that has cat lovers very nervous in one bay area neighborhood. "mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's friday, january 6th. we begin with overnight gunfire causing a very tense situation in san francisco's south of market neighborhood.

s.w.a.t. teams race to the scene after getting reports of gunshots coming from a building on 9th street. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from the scene on details of the men being detained. >> reporter: six hours ago this was a very tense situation. you had police perched up here on the tops of the buildings. they had to close down the freeway over here. you can see the headlights of folks coming off the offramp there. just to the right of that is the apartment building where police say that two men started shooting rifles and then jumped rooftops until they ended up over here and were eventually forced down. the two suspects climbed down the fire escape where they were taken into custody around 1:00

this morning. this is after a two-hour stakeout on 9th between bryant and harrison. neighbors were in lockdown for nearly four hours. no one was allowed to leave or come into this area of soma. >> there were a lot of round going off in succession. so there were five or six round going off at a time. >> reporter: now you, the massive stakeout involves several agents, including you the s.w.a.t. unit, the fire department and chp. >> we did have the assistance of the chp helicopter at one point. for their safety, we didn't want them to get too close because of the fact the subjects had been firing a rifle. >> reporter: police won't say is drugs or alcohol were involved. but the two men will be facing negligent charges. now, after police arrested the suspects, the s.w.a.t. team did a protective sweep of the building. so it wasn't until about 3:00 in the morning when neighbors were finally allowed to come

and go as we please -- as they please. we'll be peeking -- speaking this morning with the police to find out the identity of the suspects. back to you. >> thank you, tara. san jose is investigate egg the first homicide of 2012. police were called to alexander avenue in east san jose around 8:30 last night. officers say they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he later died at the hospital. no suspects have been identified. but they are investigating the possibility the shooting was gang-related. san francisco's newly- elected sheriff is the focus of an investigation of domestic violence. one neighbor called the police say his wife told and confided about a heated argument, allegedly tied to a larger pattern of abuse. so far he's made no comment.

but his wife strongly denies that neighbor's claim. he will be sworn in san francisco's new sheriff on sunday. attorneys for the state assemblywoman mary hiashi are due back in a san francisco courtroom. a judge is expected to set a preliminary hearing date for her felony shoplifting case. she's accused of stealing leather pants and other items worth about $2500. she's pleaded not guilty. it's 7:04. a california state agency cutting hundreds of jobs by the spring and the bay area will be affected. 1400 jobs will be cut by the state compensation insurance fund to stream line services. the contra costa "times" says 480 of those jobs are here in the bay area. they include 256 jobs in

pleasanton, 130 in vacaville, 60 in santa rosa and 36 in san jose. the state except station insurance fund is the largest provider of workers' compensation. new jobless numbers were just released this morning about an hour and a half ago. and they were better than expected. the unemployment nationally fell to 8.5% for december. that's the lowest sense february of 2009. coming up -- since february of 2009. coming up we'll learn what's behind the numbers. speaking of jobs, ford motor company is extending its reach here to the bay area. it will open a very specialized office in the silicon valley sometime before the summer. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with what ford will focus on at this new location. pam? >> it's pretty exciting. ford says opening a research lab near stanford will give it access to independent programs

in the silicon valley and give the employees the freedom to experiment. about a year ago, they decided they needed a bigger presence in the silicon valley. they call this a natural extension into one of most innovative communities in the world. ford will work on ways to better integrate phones and other personal devices in their car. it will also work on safety systems including an alert for drivers when they are approaching another car. ford says about 15 feet will work at the new job, at least initially. some of them will be recruited. others will be brought out from the deerborne headquarters to work for a while. they will work with southern california's design studio and ford's offices at microsoft. gm and bmw already have similar offices in sinly -- silicon valley. research lab is expected to open in the next few months.

reporting live from the newsroom, i'm pam cook. back to you. >> thank you. reports of cats possibly being poisoned has some residents worried. residents say at least three cats have been found there dead recently and it appears they were poisoned. we're waiting to hear back to see if any investigations are underway. one berkeley neighborhood is up in arms over a large number of parking tickets in their area. in 2010, the city altered parking signs near the trader joe's on university avenue. one side was designated as resident only parking and the other side as two-hour parking. but some of the signs are confusing, according to the website. one neighborhood woman has become known as the parking vigilante. she leaves notes on cars and informs drivers how to get out

of tickets. in orinda the prur is back in for most customers affected by a -- the power is back on for most customers affected by a power outage last night. pg&e says a car crashed into moraga way, into a car, and people lost power. we economicked in with them and they say service to all but 700 customers is back on. however, a stretch of moraga way will stay closed possibly until 4:00 this afternoon. utility companies working with cables and other companies -- it's a ream mess. it's a heavily-traveled road. >> yes. it is busy. let's check in with sal and see if there are any hot spots on the highway. >> right now, the traffic traffic looks pretty good.

if you are stuck in the fog and cold, that's a pretty brutal morning. up above, mostly sunny. you can see the layer of fog forming. there's the system up north. normal highs 56 to 60. we've been running 65 to to 70. just nuts here. not only crazy here. there's no snow in utah or south dakota. they are having record highs there by as much as 20 degrees. the whole pattern is out of sorts. it was warmer in south dakota than miami, florida. so there you if. for us we is -- so there you go. for us, no rain, mild to warm temperatures. it looks like we might have another blustery weekend. school to mild, mostly sunny -- cool to mild, mostly sunny over the weekend. the storms up in alaska kicked

the officials warned the gold miners that the mountain above them was destined to fall. 2012 is off to a good start when this comes to jobs. we learned this morning that unemployment is down. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom to break down the numbers for us. >> reporter: tori, that's right. it's the lowest unemployment rate in nearly three years. we learned this morning that unemployment drops to 8.5% for december from 8.7% the month before. employers added 200,000 new jobs. i talked to labor secretary hilda solis and she sounded upbeat about the economy. >> i think overall we're expecting to see more confidence and i'm hopeful we'll have more businesses feeling confident to hire people. >> the bickest gains were in retail, transportation and healthcare. house speaker john boehner says it's good news but too many americans are still out of

7:23. vallejo police are planning to install new surveillance cameras to help monitor high crime areas. the let's in charge of the

project told "the times herald" that cameras will be placed at key intersections. installation should begin at the end of the month. cameras put in june were credited for decreasing prostitution. san francisco's south of market neighborhood is running out of the vacant space according to "the san francisco business times" 2011 was the strongest leasing year since 19 -- since 1988. there's just a 3% vacancy rate. nearly 3.5 million in -- in soma. the city is seeking to add space on top of existing building. hey, sal, everyone behaving themselves on the golden gate bridge? >> so far, dave. but the fog is one of those things you might want to give yourself extra time to traverse the southern part of marin.

ing savige is live. how big are the -- ktvu channel 2 reporter alex sav ing is live. how high are the waves expected to be? >> reporter: if if we can find our -- if we can find our guy, we had our first surfer of the morning -- there he is there. waiting for that first wave. things are a little choppy. this high surf advisory, westerly swells between 13 and 16 feet. that could potentially mean sneaker waves and rip currents in some areas and also in certain pats -- spots you could be talking about erosion especially on the east-facing beaches. very dangerous conditions. you need to be cautious if you are heading out to any beaches

around the bay area. this high surf advisory will renan effect throughout the day today and -- remain in effect throughout the day. back to you. speaking of big waves, today is the opening ceremony of the mavericks invitational but there will not be the actual mavericks competition, at least not yet. once the actual competition happens, you will not be able to watch the action from the beach. almost two years ago, you may recall 13 people were injured when two surges swept onshore. last night changes were discussed so this could be prevented again. this includes keeping large spectators away from the beach and cliff. >> it's now more of an event for the community. the reasons why we made some of the changes that we made is for

san francisco police are busy questioning two possible suspects. s.w.a.t. teams raced to the area after getting several shots fired from a building. tara moriarty has been on this all morning. she's back. >> reporter: last night, neighbors heard several gunshots go off. within minutes, police were here and they heard several gunshots go off. you can see the officers were perched on the tops of the building. they say the suspects jumped from rooftop to rooftop until
