funeral services began an hour ago for gabrielle martinez, jr. he was shot outside of his family's taco truck. >> this is a difficult day for this community, saying good-bye to a little boy whose life was cut short by gun violence. the funeral services just wrapped up here in a very large turnout. this is the scene, just about an hour ago in the front steps of the church as the casket of little martinez, jr. was brought into the church. some people wore shirts with his picture on him. this event was open to the public. the mayor was here. also in the public was his preschool teacher who remembered the energetic little boy. >> you would know him even if you don't know him. he would come and say, hey, i'm

gabriel. he would want you to know him. he would come to make friends with you. >> reporter: along with sadness, there is also a feeling frustration at today's funeral. little gabriel is the third child to be killed in oakland in just the past five months. the classmates of gabriel's older sister also attended today's services. they were brought hire by a teacher from a nearby school they attend. they talked about ending the need for violence in taking young lives. >> we have to put up with this. it just gets me frustrated. we walk down. we go down, watch our backs. it should not be like that. >> they are in grief. they are asking for donations, you know. they want change. >> reporter: little gabriel was shot just a few feet away from his father outside that taco truck last friday night. oakland police say they don't know the motive for the shooting but they doubt that the little boy was the intended target. so far, there have been no arrest in this case although there is a $25,000 reward on the table for any information

that leads to the shooter. we are live in oakland, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. a surge in hiring last month pushed unemployment levels to its lowest levels in nearly three years. that moved the national unemployment rate down to 8 1/2%. that ills the lowest it's been since february 2009. the rate has dropped four straight months. president obama said that morning that it's a sign that the economy is starting to rebound though some people are still struggling. >> more private sector jobs were created in 2011 than any year since 2005. a lot of people that are still -- [ applause ] >> there are a lot of people who are still hurting out there, after losing more than 8 million jobs in the recession, obviously, you know, we have a lot more work to do. [ applause ] >> the president spoke during a visit to the new consumer financial protection bureau. he also said that it's' important to note that there

have been 3.2 million new private sector jobs added in the last 22 months. the republican candidates who want president obama's job are campaigning in new hampshire today ahead of tuesday's primary in that state. they react to a major headline the president made yesterday. ford announced it will open a research lab somewhere near stamford university. the lab will employ about 15 people including some who will be brought in for a short period of time from ford's headquarters in michigan. they will talk about better ways to integrate phones and personal device noose cars and improve current safety systems. ford hopes to open the lab by this summer. more employers, especially hospitals, say they will not hire people who smoke. as many of the new tobacco-free policies call for not hiring job applicants who test positive for any nicotine use,

whether it's cigarettes, smokeless cigarettes or even the nicotine patches. ballot initiatives to overcall the so-called dream act has failed to get enough signatures to put it before the voters. they had until midnight last night to come up with just over 500,000 signatures but they fell about 60,000 short. governor brown and democrats in the legislature enacted the measure which allows illegal immigrants to qualify for publicly funded scholarships at the state's universities. san jose police are investigating that city's first homicide of 2012. police were called to alexander avenue in east san jose around 8:30 last night. officers say they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he later dade at the hospital. no suspects have been identified but police say they are investigating the possibility the shooting was gang related. san francisco police are asking for the public's help to

solve a five-year-old cold case. 20-year-old alberto casila was shot and killed near a south market nightclub. it happened shortly after he was confronted by two suspects at club caliente. police say -- police will join his mother this afternoon to hand out flyers with information about the case and sketches of the two suspects. a $250,000 reward is also being offered in the case. san francisco police are questioning two men who were arrested early this morning after someone fired a number of shots from a roof top in the south of market area. ktvu's tara moriarty said that the gunshots put the entire neighborhood under lockdown for two hours. >> reporter: just after 11:00 last night, s.w.a.t. teams staked out roof stops between harrison and bryant. >> i heard about three shots.

and then i kept walking a little further. had four more round. >> reporter: emily spire was just coming out of the store. >> a cop told me to get back inside the store. >> reporter: several gunshots rang out close to this building, so close to the freeway that the chp had to shut it down for two hours. >> we did have the assistance of the chp helicopter at one point. for their safety, we didn't want them to get too close because of the fact that the suspect had been firing a rifle. >> the three men jumped on roof tops and were forced down a stair. >> police arrested the men at 1:00 in the morning and then s.w.a.t. teams did a protective sweep of the building. some neighbors were angry because they were in lockdown for nearly four hours. >> any time we have an active shooter, we want to make sure,

number 1, public safety. protection of life is our priority. >> police will not say if drugs or alcohol played a role. the men will most likely fair various weapons charges. no one was hurt. in san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news san francisco's newly elected sheriff is the focus of a criminal investigation. police are investigating a possible incident of domestic violence between ross nikorimi and his wife. hisso far, he has declined comment but his wife denies the neighbor's claim. he will be sworn in as san francisco's new sheriff on sunday a downed utility pole knocked out power overnight in the east bay and it is still causing some big traffic problem this is news time in

norinda. a crew was out working, when a car hit a power pole. we just heard from pg&e, they say 20 customers are still without power. electricity was restored for 600 other customers affected around 6:00 a.m. however, traffic on mirraga which is a main road in and out of the area is expected to be impacted until 4:00 p.m. look at the line of traffic. that's because the crew is still working to replace the damaged pole and all the equipment on it. a woman in belmont said she mistook a gas pedal for the brakes and rammed into a building. it happened at the children's arts studio. the driver suffered min nor injuries. crews managed to tow the car

crews clean up a diesel spill coming on a ramp to highway 92. the works used absorbing material and power washer to clean up the spill. oakland police are investigating a crash this morning at 10th and harrison street that left one car on its side. no one was injured. witnesses say that the red honda on its side ran a red light and hit the other car. san francisco district attorney george gascone announced the sentencing of a

serial child molester. julius lewis was sentenced to prison. lewis is suspected in several other sexual abuse cases. during the last hour, one of the victims spoke about how she felt seeing lewis sentenced. >> to finally see justice being done, even though it's taken this long for me to speak to somebody to get something done, justice has finally been served. >> reporter: gascone says that some of the sexual abuse date back to 1989. a judge in peru has griffin johan van der sloot until wednesday to determine his plea. he wore a bullet proof vest. his attorney says there is a 20% chance that he will end up pleading guilty to murdering 20- year-oldperuvian stephanie torres. van der sloot is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of natalee holloway. her body was never found.

storm tracker 2 giving you a look at 24 miles per hour off the half moon bay. we have wave heights 19 feet right now. wind northwesterly at 22 miles per hour. so, again, that high surf advisory in place from sonoma all the way down into monterey. very choppy out there with the strong gusts, 27 miles per hour and the wave height. high tide will come back later tonight. surf advisory until about 6:00. westerly swells will remain through the day and will be easing up through tonight and through the weekend will continue to ease as well. satellite radar here. there is a weak system bringing on that westerly flow here in the water. we remain with dry conditions but you can see northern california getting just a sprinkle. this weak system will sink and it's going to be over nevada tomorrow. that's going to increase the wind for the weekend. partly cloudy skies. we do have a cooler day in store. so it is bringing our temperatures down just a little bit in most areas. and as this continues to move
