continues. this is ktvu channel 2 news. well, good morning to you, welcome to a brand-new day, january 9th i am dave clark. >> good morning, thank you for checking in with us, it looks like it is a warm january. >> no doubt about it, a lot of upper 20s in the north bay, mild temperatures and after we get going we will have maybe even closer to 70 cards santa cruz. a little more crowded 80 westbound and this week is busier than last. also the morning commute looks good if you are driving on 101 in san francisco. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. dozens of people are displaced after a fire rips through a senior apartment complex. tara moriarty received new video of the fire and you will only see it here on ktvu

channel 2 news, tara? >> reporter: this new video shows the intensity of the fire. embers flying all over the place. it was shot by a neighbor who was woken up by another neighbor screaming fire, fire. [ sirens ] >> reporter: this morning firefighters received a call for an apartment complex off of madden avenue and the video shows how crews had to move quickly because the second story was gloved. 40 peopleee -- engulfed. 40 people were evacuated. they upgraded to a three-alarm fire which means 60 firefighters were battling this blaze. it was a heavy fire multiple floors of the apartment complex and we know there is a lot of residence who

live in this -- residents who live in this facility. >> reporter: only one person had injury from the fire and the rest was stress related. this is a senior apartment complex so you can imagine how scary it was. neighbors lent a helping hand. no word on how this fire started or even which room is started in. back here live investigators were on the scene and the flame flew out because of the flames here. we will let you know exactly how this fire started. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. well a number of suspicious fires in novato stands at 20. it started at 1:30 at the rush creek open preserve. no homes were damaged but crews have scrambled throughout the

weekend putting out intentional fires in the neighborhood of redwood boulevard. fires damaged a utility pole. >> i am hearing about the fire danger and i am surprised it happened here but i guess it can happen anywhere. >> reporter: police have not made any arrests but given the dry conditions it could be a short time before a number of firefighters get out of hand. licorice workers are now getting outside support. union leaders have now joined the picket lines and police say they are too. kraig debro is there in union city, there is a lot going on, what is happening, kraig. >> i think police are going to want this camper out of here.

i spoke to an officer who was worried somebody may get hurt because striking workers are trying to block those from getting in and those who want to get in want to get in and they were afraid tensions would mount and it would get out of hand. you can see off in the distance, officers are there and to your right, document over here it is fairly dark but i think you can make out some silhouettes as people come through. people who done work at the american licorice company should know how important it is to their own benefits package. we have been speaking to the people there and they say it is a real shot in the arm to have people who done even work at this company as well as teenagers out here as well. when i spoke to a member of the

teamsters she told me it was very important for other workers out here because next time it could be their benefit package. >> people are thinking why do i have to pay, they understand it is an ail lent idea and we have to support every worker to have good benefits. this is the 6th week and they voted to go on strike over proposed changes to their healthcare benefits packages. the company wants workers who are here to pay $1,500 a year now and they are paying $3,000 a year for their benefit package. we are told a federal mediator and i told you it already happened and i checked with a member where a federal

mediation is to take place. initially they did not want to submit to federal mediation and they are still trying to get ahold of american licorice for more. seven african-american police officer accused the police department and the chief of telling racest jokes and barred them from getting promotions. the city has spent millions of dollars on this five-year-old case. new tomorrow, presidential cap candidates are making -- presidential candidates are making live pitches and we will have the latest polls in tomorrow's primary. democrats also head to the

suspected gang related shooting. a 12-year-old boy suffered injuries from flying glass. a man was shot in the arm while walking into a liquor store and he is expected to survive. later this morning, san francisco police chief will deliver the opening key note address at a law symposium. san francisco is hosting this two day event. they are coming from all across california after being invited. they will deal with disasters terror threats and other major events. if you drive through the san ramon valley and merging lanes will be built on a two lane stretch between sick more valley and cross canyon roads.

that fire started 1:30 this morning and firefighters had to hike through hilly terrain to get to this. just hours ago it was still smoldering but not threatening any homes and that's why firefighters decided to put a line around the fire and let it burn itself out. the chief would not say whether it was connected to the 20 or so grass fires over the weekend. most of them happened in a very residential area near south novato road. investigators believe all of them were deliberately set and there is an arson investigation underway. and a few hours after these fires, somebody set fire to a grassy area which damaged a utility pole and sunday morning, redwood boulevard,

firefighters had to put out a fire there. it happens in an area where there is a lot of homes close by. for example this area is 20 feet away from the nearest house here and that's why investigators are concerned. they want to find the people responsibility and i have called trying to get an update and they will not have information until later this morning. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. and new information into an overnight fire in san francisco. it started in a chinatown apartment house fire. one man was treated for burns as well as smoke inhalation and we don't know his condition. more than 40 people were forced out of their homes. the investigation continues. and look at this, this is a senior citizens complex during

they have other union members who have joined them on the picket lines. members of the occupied oakland fellow union members are walking the picket line and together they blocked vehicles from entering the company. so farther making sure nobody gets hurt but the people at the licorice community are twice as bad as it usually is and it is american licorice workers today and tomorrow it could be them. >> any time there are workers out on strike, whenever they are trying to take away benefits or whatever, then that puts an attacks on the end -- puts an attack on the entire

screaming fire, fire. it was the second story of an apartment complex was completely engulfed. one person suffered burns to his feet. san jose upgraded this to a three alarm which means 60 firefighters were battling this blaze. >> there was initial concern there were people inside so we had an aggressive movement to make to your there were no -- make sure there were no fatalities. >> reporter: five people were taken to the hospital and only one person had injuries from the actual fire. the rest was stress related. this was a senior apartment complex so you can imagine how slowly it took for everybody to get out safely. there are a couple of people

staying behind but you can see right through the building just the damage that was done. no word on how it started and havingers have already come and gone. we will keep you posted throughout the morning. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a u.s. marine could get the death penalty in iran. after an iranian court found him guilty today of being a cia spy. he has been convicted of both spying and supporting terrorism in iran. he has been in an iranian prison for four months. he now has 20 days to appeal his verdict. one shoulder was killed and another wounded in a deadly attack in southern afghanistan.
