well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, january 9th. the hunt is on for a serial arsonist in the north bay, there are about 20 suspicious fires spread out in several locations. allie rasmus is in novato where fire crews fear the danger will only grow worse. good morning, allie. >> reporter: good morning, tori. all of these suspicious fires have happened in south novato. this area here, this is where one of the fires was set. you can see where the black patch in the found is. this is where the fire was. this is a -- this is a burnt- city looking wood chips. this is just 10 to 20 feet away. that's augmenting the risk and

-- and the ringer. nova police think they have a firebug on their hands. this started around 1:30 this morning. firefighters had to hike to get to it. it burned about three-quarters of an acre. it's not very big and it's not threatening any homes in the area. firefighters put a line around it. they said their strategy in tackling that fire was basically to let the fire burn itself out. as of about 45 minutes, that fire was still smoldering, in that open preserve. the battalion chief wouldn't say whether the fire in the preserve is definitely connected to the 20 or so other fires. but they have been much of the weekend looking for an arson. it all started with a dumpster fire saturday night. a few hours after firefighters went to that dump pster,

someone set fire to a grassy area of the sidewalk near redwood boulevard and seascape drive and that fire damaged a utility pole. then by 3:00 a.m. sunday morning, firefighters were in the hills putting out more than a dozen grass fires that had spread. the battalion chief i spoke to said it's very fortunate that there wasn't much wind. i called to get an update on the latest information and they say they won't have any more information until later. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. in overnight news, a fast- moving fire rated through a senior citizen complex in san jose. take a look at this cell phone video this. was shot by a neighbor. everybody got out of there safely but firefighters say at least five people had to be taken to the hospital.

one person suffered burns to their feet. the other person was treated for stress events. coming up, we'll give you -- we'll take you live to the scene. also, san francisco police out there searching for two suspects in two separate shootings within five hours. the first one happened about 2:00 yesterday afternoon in the bayview district. one man is in critical condition after being wounded. it's suspected it's a gang related shooting -- gang- related shooting. and then on bayshore boulevard, a man was shot in the store as he walked into a liquor store. he's expected to survive. we're following a tense situation in the east bay, those striking licorice workers, now they are getting support. just hours ago, occupy

protesters and union leaders have ginned them and now the police are on the scene. kraig debro is live with more. kraig, what is the scene like? >> reporter: there seems to be more people here. one thing that's happened that the -- in the past 10, 20 seconds, police are no longer blocking listing. that's the address the company is on. this is whipple road. you can watch the picketers watching by here. we had a lot of confrontations this morning, people blocking from getting inside the company here. according to security guards at the american licorice company. they have no comment. the company has no comment. they wouldn't even take a business card. >> next time my contract is up,

[ male announcer ] 80 delicious calories. fiber one. 7:29. we're getting a better look at the damage caused by an overnight fire that tore through a senior apartment complex in san jose. tara moriarty joins us live from the scene, where at least a dozen people were displaced and several taken to the hospital and, tara, you just spoke to someone who likely saved a woman's life this morning. >> reporter: he did. you know, what, he actually reached through a burning window in order to reach in and grab a woman who was trapped inside of her apartment. we're hearing a lot of story --

stories about heroism. neighbors were going door to door to try to save people and it worked. [ sirens ] >> reporter: now, this is video we brought you first on ktvu shot by a neighbor who said he woke up to another neighbor screaming fire! fire! it shows the intensity of the flames, embers flying all over the place and the rush for crews to get it all under control. it happened around 1:45 this morning. firefighters received a call the -- received a call that the second story of an apartment complex off madden avenue was comrootly engulled -- completely engulfed. dozens of people had to be evacuated. >> i heard screams first and i loaned out my window and i saw flames shooting up and half of the building was up in smoke. >> reporter: bill lopez shared a hug with the woman saved. she was trapped and lopez broke through a screen, reached in

and grabbed li and grabbed hersh -- and pulled her out. >> thank you. >> reporter: li suffered smoke inhalation and her husband had burns to his hand. another woman had burns on her feet. two others were taken to the hospital for stress-related injuries. is a senior complex so you can man how scary it was for folks. no word on how this fire started or if the smoke detectors were working. we do know that arson investigators have come and gone so we'll be finding out later this morring if, indeed, this fire was accidental. we're live in san jose, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. this morning, the investigation continues into the overnight fire in san francisco. it started shortly of a 1:00 a.m. at a chinatown apartment on clay and bernie. one man was treated for smoke inhalation and burns. his condition is not known more than 50 people were forced out of their home.

if you are into everything high tech, then las vegas is the place to be this week. this year's consumers electronics trade show officially kicks off tomorrow. it's the largest event of its kind. construction crews spent the weekend getting ready. 140,000 people are expected to aten. electronics companies will use the large crowds to unveil their high-tech gadgets. the show is also a boost to the las vegas economy. starting today, two of the nations largest tax prp prices company will offer free help to thousands of americans. now walmart is involving h and

rh and r -- h and r to help with taxes. gasoline prices are going up again. industry experts say that could be a sign of a lot higher prices this summer. right now, the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.37. that's up 9 cents from last week. now, here in the bay area, prices are up only 6 cents from last week. we're still paying a higher average, nearly $3.70 a gallon. the experts say we should expect to say almost a dollar now by summertime. hermosa beach in southern california is back open this morning. the beach shut down for several hours yesterday after someone found a suspicious device wrapped in duct tape. a bomb squad responded to the beach. that's when they detonated the device as a precaution. turns out, though, it was nothing more than a coconut with some metal attached, possibly used as a weight for a

there. ktvu tea allie rasmus has been on this all morning. you are now in one of the neighborhoods that are -- that's kind of nervous now. good morning, alley. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. yeah. i just got an update from novato police and they updated some of the numbers for us. they confirmed that last night and early this morning there were another seven fires that happened in novato. most of those fires happened in this neighborhood where we are. this is redwood boulevard. off to the right, you can see there are a lot of homes in this area. brierwood court and then several of the fires that happened last night and early in the morning were in the hill area. this is linwood hill park the latest fire happened at 1:30 this morning, at the rush creek open space prier issh. firefighters had to like to -- hike to get to it. that fire burned about three quarters of an acre.

it's the largest fire that has happened so far. it continued to smolder for several hours. firefighters say that fire was contained, didn't threaten any homes. that brings the total numbers of suspicious fires that have happened over the week from 25 to 26. just since friday night. police believe this is arson and that all of those fires are linked. s. >> the times that they are other cue -- linked. >> the times that they are burning, the types of tur terrain being -- terrain being burned are all indicative to relating to each other. >> reporter: now, saturday night a dumpster near the bike path near the end of marin caught fire. other fires damaged walls and a pg&e fire pole. the good news is that none of these fires that have happened saturday evening have caused any damage to any homes or
