case against the suspect in these attacks. >> reporter: san francisco police said their suspect in a string of sexual assaults in the mission district last year has admitted to participating in the three attacks. >> the last scene we went to the victim actually -- there was a lot of blood. a very brutal scene. >> reporter: police on friday arrested frederick dozier after a tip. >> the biggest break came from a tip that came in. and from that tip came a name, the first name. >> reporter: police say dna evidence tied him to the crime scene. >> how we were able to make the connections. >> reporter: the assaults last year raise fear among residents. police distributed a sketch of a suspect and a surveillance video and called in outside

help. >> it was probably close to 100 people and we had outside agencies. the fbi on board. people from virginia on board. >> reporter: investigators today told us he worked for a recycling program. he indicates he worked for the san francisco unified school district. residents in neighborhoods near the assaults say they are relieved. >> it is reassuring for me. i walk to work every morning. >> reporter: just within the last hour, we received an e- mail from the san francisco unified school district that confirmed he worked as a worker. the district says he underwent a full criminal back ground check, which found no convictions. his employment has been terminated. he could be in court tomorrow

to face the charges. reporting like, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. following a developing story out of the east bay. a search is on the way for an escaped inmate. jose luis gonzales franco escaped from the santa rita prison at 2:00 this afternoon. deputies spanned out in the hills surrounding the jail looking for him. >> charge is for burglary out of oakland. 57 years old. and has -- other than the burglaries, that is his most serious charge in his life. >> he says the sheriff's office was alerted after someone reported seeing a man in jail clothing leaving the ground. still no sign of jose luis gonzales franco. police tonight are trying to catch a serial arsonist. ktvu's noelle walker is live where the fires are dangerous

given the dry conditions. >> reporter: absolutely. police and fire will be out with extra patrols it tonight. bad enough to have an arsonist running about but looking at the dry conditions makes it troubling. >> reporter: last night a fire bug was hard at work. 24 small fires were set over night. 55 fires in the last two days. >> this is the work of a serial arsonist. there is no indication of any type of natural cause. >> reporter: some people are nervous. >> that is very scary. >> reading in the paper about the fires that happened, i thought, please don't come out here. >> reporter: people here are concerned about the tinder box conditions, turning a small fire into something much

bigger. >> very unusual to experience these dry conditions. >> reporter: he says winter should not be the best season. >> the fact we are having fires that are igniting in january is unusual. >> reporter: they have extra patrols and equipment out trying to find the arsnist and put out the fire -- arsonist and put out the fire. they want people to report anything suspicious. that doesn't mean it has to be seeing someone start a fire. it could be seeing somebody walking down the street in the middle of the night. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. jury selection started today for the man accused of killing the daughter of former oakland raider fred biletnikoff. mohammed haroon ali seen here after his arrest is retried for the 1999 murder of tracey biletnikoff. she was killed at a drug rehab

center. in 2001 mohammed haroon ali was convicted of strangling her but the conviction was thrown out. ed lee appointed the planning commission president. child abuse president -- christina olague was sworn in this afternoon. she is left to center and has routes in community activism. the man christina olague is replacing spent his first day as sheriff. his first day comes upon allegations he abused his wife. the wife denies any abuse. in just hours voters in new hampshire will cast their ballots in the first gop primary in the race for president. ktvu's ken pritchett is with the candidates on this final

day of campaigning and joins us live from new hampshire at a john huntsman event. ken? >> reporter: ken, look behind me, you could see people inside cleaning up from this campaign rally. john huntsman left here an hour ago. john huntsman spent his entire campaign here in new hampshire. the question is, will it pay off. he is hoping it does because voters appreciate that kind of attention from the candidates. >> reporter: it was repeated many times today. a candidate, this time john huntsman visited a cafe. this is new hampshire. less than 5,000 people live here. john huntsman has been here at least twice. here voters can size up their

candidates face to face. >> i wanted to meet the candidate. i am looking at him and mitt romney. >> reporter: mitt romney with a commanding lead and the candidates vying for second place, ron paul, john huntsman rick santorum and newt gingrich have been taking swipes of mitt romney. >> i think a reagan conservative has a better chance of defeating a left wing president than does a massachusetts -- >> reporter: the race for first place is all but over, that doesn't sit well with some new hampshire voters. >> makes me more determined to vote tomorrow. >> reporter: a poll shows mitt romney in the lead by 33%. the ron paul is at 20%. john huntsman at 13%.

this fire in san jose forced 16 residents from their homes this morning. it started before it 2:00 a.m. at the senior housing apartments. 5 residents suffered minor injuries. investigators say a space heater may have started the fire. supporters of one of san francisco's longest running medical marijuana clubs protested their closure today in front of the federal
