problems in the south bay. also this morning, looking at 680 southbound minor crash and for the most part we are looking good in this corridor. now let's go back to the desk. the time is now 6:00 and the search continues for a car involved with a fatal hit-and- run crash in oakland. it happened last night about 11:30 on 73rd and bank croft avenue right there. near the oakland police department headquarters we are hearing what a friend of the victim is now saying, allie? >> reporter: that's right, traffic investigators are trying to find the driver of this fatal hit-and-run. it happened just after 11:00 last night and according to the victim's friend, he was at the scene when it happened and he didn't see clearly what happened but he described his friend was walking in the crosswalk right next to a gas

station. he said his friend was struck while in the crosswalk and the car just sped off. >> i could see my friend laying on the ground and i just called for help. >> reporter: now the man was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries and he later died from those injuries. now police don't have much to go on but he said according to the police report, there are no witnesses who could describe the car involved in this hit- and-run however there are surveillance cameras mounted and investigators will see if any of this accident was caught on surveillance individual yes.$♪>>. >> -- surveillance video. they are looking at an accident where somebody ploughed into a power pole, here is more with kraig debro,

kraig? >> reporter: they are still closed, take a look across the street. you can see pg&e crews are working to get that power pole back into the ground. the school located behind where that power pole is will be down all day. not only the pole will be down but the transformer that supplies the academy will be affected. the impact cut the power pole in two and knocked out power to five other customers. the customers are back online now but some are still not online. it continued for 50 yards crashing into somebody's front yard. the driver was not hurt in the crash and was not cited. most people should have power back on by noon but the school needs a new transformer and that could take up to 8 to 10 hours and if that does not go smoothly they are looking at

canceling another day of school. the epa's is suing a company located at the port of redwood city. this company shreds about 100,000 cars a year along with appliances and other products. they are responsible for a major pollution problem involving led mercury copper and zinc. now they could soon face fines up to 37,000 dollars a day. now the bay area quality management district fined this same company $20,000 for a huge fire five years ago. you are looking at pictures here and theres a huge plume of toxic smoke. this is a video back in april 2007. in san francisco, a jack in the box restaurant is applying for an after hour's permit and

that's not sitting well with neighbors. joining us now from the richmond district to explain, tara? well this jack in the box is actually being closed for the past four hours and neighbors want it to stay that way. if you take a look, they are applying for an extended permit after a brawl turned vicious early thanksgiving morning. that is when cal firefighter and marine had a fight with a man and that man edward escobar sought revenge and ran the man down with his car. he is seen in facebook support page where he remains in critical condition at a hospital with head injuries. it turns out jack in the box did not have the proper permits at the time to be operating

village of disksville knox, all nine registered voters showed up just after midnight casting their ballots. the results two votes for mitt romney, two votes for jon huntsman, one for newt gingrich and one for rand paul. president barack obama received 3 votes and since 1968, the winner has gone to win the republican nomination and this by the way is the first time there has ever been a tie. >> it is funny, nine votes, did they decide the republican nomination, 6:07 is the time. we have a few things this morning, sal? >> that's right. we have had a few things that have been causing some early morning slow downs. let's go out to the live pictures. i want to show you 880 southbound. another car came by and hit a car that was on the side and now the car is flipped over and

there is an emergency crew on the scene now. watch for traffic in this area. and on 580, that earlier crash, that has been cleared and they had only minor injuries. we have seen some slowed traffic as a result of an earlier crash although 92 is slower on the way down. also we are looking at live pictures on interstate 880 heading towards the coliseum and that traffic is heading along nicely. still not a big crowd but those metering lights are not on just yet. good morning to you and january is feeling a lot like december, very little rain, sunny warm days cold mornings and it does not look like anything will change. computer models are trying to break down a ridge next week and i will believe it when i see it. we have had some false hope before and maybe something will change but it's not looking too

promising yet. clouds today but we get back to the sun on wednesday and no rain expected. it might be different in that the pattern will be north to east instead of north to south which could happen. i am not forecasting any rain yet. the pattern is still a dry pattern and a little low is forming right off this system. it's going to go offshore right along the coast. high pressure is stuck on the west coast and another one will follow behind it and it will give us clouds and some cooler temperatures. 30 in santa rosa and a few upper 20s and 34 in concord and livermore and even 37 in san rafael, there are some cold numbers out there. 38 at the oakland airport. it is beginning to move south and it's very weak and if we get anything, any rain it will be very light.

probably favoring anything closer to the coast, the system will fall apart as it slides south and heads off to southern california until maybe sunday. which in turn will give us a northeast breeze tomorrow. temperatures will come down, we will have morning sun increasing clouds, light rainier the coast but the doubt it happens. upper 60s and clouds are moving to the north bay first and more sunshine towards the south bay. temperatures do come down a little bit with a hint of cloud cover and we have knocked it down a few degrees on these temperatures. mostly sunny thursday and your weekend looks good as well, mostly sunny and warm days. they are having to dig out of their homes, cordova is under 18 feet of snow. that is a record for the town of 2000 people and several buildings have collapsed under the weight of that snow.

firefighters in the county contained a brush fire and it started 7:00 p.m. no homes were damaged and nobody was hurt but the cause is still under investigation. time now 613 and novato says there were no suspicious fires there overnight. sheriff's deputies, they all increased patrols for a serial arsonist. 24 of the fires were set in the rush creek open space preserve. >> oh, my gosh, it would be so easy for a fire to come over that hill and wipe us out. like, it is awful. >> now so far no homes have been damaged by small fires and within the hour police tell us they responded to a small fire about 9:15 in a curbside

two new hampshire bulletins show they opened third polls first and mitt romney tied with jon huntsman but he took the lead in another town shortly after ward. mitt romney is attacking the work he did bringing up all the work that took place under mitt romney's watch and he gave his opponents more ammunition to target his business' background when he made this comment about healthcare. >> i want individuals to have insurance and that means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. it also means if you don't like them you can fire them and i like being able to fire people that don't provide services to me. >> reporter: now they say the comment was taken out of context. one candidate may have gotten the biggest boost from mitt romney's mistake and i will tell you who that is and whether it will make a difference in today's primary,

walnut creek so if you drive towards the tunnel and if you come on 680 and take westbound 24, most lanes are blocked with an injury crash here. let's look at some live pictures, we have varges and that's where we saw it earlier and there is a paramedic. if you are driving on 280 northbound in the south bay, traffic is moving along so far so good. good morning, cold out there, 40s closer to the coast. it is too weak of a system and there it is, it is doing its own thing away from the main system but it is developing offshore. there is an issue with it, if it was over us i would say we would get light rain because we need it. but everyone else, if you are

closer to town we have 30s and 33 in napa, 32 in fairfield, 37 in san jose and our system has not much to work with and as it weekends, it is staying offshore. it does not have enough to give us anything in the way of rain but mostly sunny, lows 28 to 40. we have increasing clouds and this is a very weak system. if there is any rain it will be light. 50s and 60s for temperatures today. clouds arrive to the north bay first and east bay and south bay just a little bit warmer and temperatures do come down. we will clear it out on wednesday and back to sunshine and mild and warm weather, everything points towards a dry forecast on saturday. amazon.com has agreed to

unveil its plans to transform the former military base into a state-of-the-art facility that would manage the flow of cargo in and out of the port of oakland. it would create thousands of jobs and also pump millions into the economy. they are hoping to win the approval of the city sometime this spring. the former employee is accused of a violent strange of sexual assaults is expected in court. he admitted to participating in the three attacks. they happened in june, november and december of last year. police took him in on an anonymous tip and dna evidence ties him to the crime scene. he works as a part-time student nutrition services employee and has since been fired. a san francisco police woman managed to capture a rape

blocks away from oakland police east substation and they don't have a whole lot to go on but we have a video of where this all happened. it is the intersection of 73rd and bancroft and it happened at 11:30 last night. according to police officers there were no witnesses to describe what happened in this fatal hit-and-run but we spoke to his friend who said he was crossing the street on the corner when that friend was struck by an oncoming car in the crosswalk and after that after he struck the victim the car took off. >> i could see my friend laying on the ground and i called for help. >> we are trying to identify the vehicle and trying to determine more about what happened here tonight. >> reporter: the man was rushed to hyland hospital with very serious injuries and he died of

his injuries late last night. there are cameras and they are checking to see if any of this was captured on video. they are also looking to question the traffic division investigation's division and we will provide you with more information as it becomes available. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. jose frankco was arrested not far from the prison grounds. now he is 5 seven years old and is doing time for a burglary conviction. he slipped away from a minimum security wing earlier in the day. that escape prompted a massive manhunt. they finally used an old trick to get him. >> a little bit of gamesmanship to get him, if you call off the search the person thinks you are no longer looking for them and they think they have gotten away so they will come out. >> they are trying to determine

how they escaped. it is very rare, only three escapes since 1989. a 78-year-old man is going to be in the county courtroom later this morning. a preliminary hearing for a man who is charged with killing four women between 1977 and 1994. today's hearing will be the first time that prosecuters will give details in the case. the suspect will be representing himself. now he says his plan will raise $6.9 billion annually, but the legs legislative office says it is likely to generate 8.4 billion in the 2012 budget year and 5.5 billion in the plan after that.

that would boost sales on people making more than $250,000 a year. a contra county high school is looking to keep more money in state funding and coming up at 5:00 the reason why that money is in jeopardy and how it could have a big impact on the campus. they are planning on an expansion into the south bay and they are about to recommend $900 million in federal aid and congress is expected to approve it. bart wants to build an extension from san jose to fremont and they hope to have it completed by 2014. and also work begins on the first phase of the new smart train. the rail district approved a $103 million contract fork work on this section of track to the marin civic center. stacy is heading up the project

and they say it could generate as many as 1,000 jobs. 6:35 right now, a big crash there, sal? that's right, we have a map of the area and it is west of highway 680 so a lot of the cars coming down will be getting on to 24 and as you know 24, a lot of people drive to oakland from walnut creek. the bart station is not affected and people looking at it may be on the platform but you may want to get to oakland and that is certainly one of the alternates you can use. but you may want to get after the lafayette bart station. let's go out and take a look at highway 4, we have some slowed traffic here as well. and it is slowed in bay point and the morning commute on northbound and southbound, that looks pretty good, not a big back up so far at the bay

bridge toll plaza, let's go to steve. a couple of people stopped me and said hey, you have to get your order in for rain, we need you to do your rain dance, put out some candles do whatever it takes. we need to change the pattern, it is usually a slow process but once everything changes it will happen. very little, i don't have to do much if anything at all, it is staying off the coast and there in lies the problem. for the first time there is nothing until after next week. no rain is expected and anything that falls will not amount to anything. the pattern is stuck, it is not only here but globally. either you get too much

precipitation or you are not getting anything at all. ask the mountains in utah, they are not getting anything at all. just hake out for a couple of days and this system does not have much to work it. it is cold, mostly cloudy, cool today with upper 50s and 60s. it is another cold morning and patchy fog showing up, i think it was napa showing up in the air. that's it, it is not going to do anything you can see on the water vapor how it is falling apart as it begins to move south. increasing clouds, it is a dry pattern lows 48 with a weak system could be coming in with a better forecast. upper 60s a little warmer towards santa clara valley. wednesday we start to clear out

and all signs point towards another mild pattern as we head to your weekend. new polls for new hampshire and we will be watching as results come in and chris want shall joins us from manchester new hampshire and we will not get official results until later this morning but what are they saying, chris? >> reporter: well everybody is looking at mitt romney the man who is leading the polls and that includes new hampshire he is well ahead of everybody else, he is 20 points ahead of second and third place. of course anything can happen but it is the number 2 and the number 3, well you know candidates, it is their spots which is what everybody will be looking at. it could be rick santorum, it could be jon huntsman. jon huntsman put it all into

new hampshire and he is hope being everybody here will see he will get some momentum and mojo and more money to compete in other states like south carolina and florida and other primary states like that. he may finish below and he may not last much longer. talking about rick perry, he has gone straight to south carolina and did come to new hampshire for a couple of debates but he won south carolina because he is more social and those types of issues resonate more with voters in south carolina. >> it will be interesting to see how rick perry does. chris in manchester, we will start getting official results sometime after 5:00 p.m. our time and thank you for that update. stay with us throughout the day and evening on ktvu channel 2

another customers at 2:30 thanksgiving morning. police say that customer then followed the man to a nearby gas station and ran him over with his suv. single father and former marine and call firefighter has been in critical condition and they have discovered jack in the box has been working without a permit. now the owner is trying to get that permit but some local her chance are trying to fight it. they say it is a magnet for drunken brawls and they are planning a meeting at 6:30 at city hall. a lot of the businesses are not open just yet but we plan on getting reaction from them about this jack in the box. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. they are calling for all

airbus planes to be grounded because of the discovery of cracks on the wings. they say the cracks can be fixed during the routine maintenance checks and they say the cracks were found on the planes but they have been repaired and are safe to fly. another plane was found to have a crack in its engine having engine failure but the two are not related. it killed 11 people in september and the ntsb is looking into how air show events including the reno division could decide if air races are even allowed. there were 8 accidents last year but not all accidents were fatal. teaching jobs may be on the

line because of mistakes. they must have 25 students in order to qualify for $1.5 million from the state however some of the classes exceeded the limit this year and that's why the school's funding may be pooled. 22 teaching jobs are at risk and the school district is now appealing to the state to avoid losing that money. the state department of education could make a decision as early as march. they are looking at all the problems this morning heading out the door. a lot of slowed traffic around the bay area, things seem to be improving a little bit. it was kind of a mess because of a crash in berkeley and this morning it is busy but i will show you when you get to the toll plaza, it's not all that bad and here it is coming up on 7:00. it is 6:48 technically ten

minutes before 7:00 and we have a big backup and the normal commute takes us to a little more than usual, we are not going to ask any questions about that. traffic on 101 and 280 is looking good, a little slow over to 280 across the bay and recovered was a crash on the shoulder but traffic is a little slow on the road there. and 101 seems to be the busiest, no problems on highway 17 headed to cupertino, let's go to steve. we do have clear skies with increasing clouds. tim wrote a nice tweet. and dave responded my allergies are already kicking up and believe it or not. the pollen count is already in

the medium category. is this happening already in january? yes, it is because we are not getting any rain. it will come down to the upper 60s and lower 50s. also livermore today 59-62 with increasing clouds, it is still cold and we can't get rid of that cold dry air. we've had it for the longest time. low 30s, north bay, much of the east bay, it is clear and we have the jetstream is split and the weaker branch is diving south and you can see it forming there and it is already falling apart. if we get it, it will be light sprinkles closer to the cost

campus is in los gatos. they will license and regulate commercial dog walkers on private properties and if approved they would be allowed to walk no more than 8 dogs at a time. they also have to go through special training and pay a fee for a permit. business leaders are trying to keep the 49ers in san francisco. the group still thinks they can convince the team to move into a new home at hunter's point. now the plan calls for all weather stadium with a retrackable roof which shows 70,000 fans and the san francisco skyline. they are moving ahead to move into a billion dollar stadium
