well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, january 10th. pg&e crews are working to restore power to hundreds of people in a san jose neighborhood. the lights went out after a car plowed into a power pole on camden avenue last night. ktvu's kraig debro joins us live from the crash scene. kraig, we understand one school is affected? >> reporter: one school is affected. you can see it over there behind where they are working on that power pole. the past hour hour or so, pg&e has replaced the power pole. they have a new power pole and basically, they are cementing it to the ground. right over here, this is a bus district yard over there. i asked the guy over there, was bus service gonna be affected? he said no, the computers are

down. that's not a problem. but i found out the school headquarters are other there -- headquarters are over there. there's no power there. we know one of the schools without electricity is kamballa academy. after 8:00 last night, according to police, there was a vehicle driving by in neighborhood on camden between union and and -- and baskem. it snapped in half. that power was not only connected to homes but it knocked out the school's power. that vehicle kept going. it was a white suv. it ended up in somebody's yard. it's still on the scene. that vehicle eventually came to a stop. the driver of that vehicle was not hurt, not because of the crash or the power poles and he

was not cited, according to police. i want you to take a look at a live picture. just off to the distance behind the trucks to your left, you can barely make out the white suv. it's still over there. i just went morer there to see if it's there. one of the reasons it's still there is because they have been doing work all night long. also, the people staying in the homes last night, it's very, very cold, in the 30s. it's difficult to stay at home like that. the power out -- the power will be out at the school all day. i will have to check with the principal to see if any have canceled classes. most power will have power on by noon. but because a transformer blew, it will take another eight to ten hours to get the school online. reporting line, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. the police search goes on for

the driver who hit and killed a man crossing a street in oakland. it happened last night around 11:30 on 37rd and bancroft near the mall. allie rasmus is -- is live to tell us the latest. >> reporter: good morning. according to the victim's friend who was with him at the time, the man was in the crosswalk about to cross the street when the car struck him in the middle of the crosswalk and the driver kept going. let's show you the video of where this happened, 73rd and bancroft in oakland. it happened around 11:30. just a couple of days away from there is the oakland eastmont substakes. an officer there told me officers doesn't have a lot to go on. there were no witnesses that could clearly describe what vehicle be looked like because it spread off after wards. >> we're trying to identify the

vehicle. >> reporter: now, we don't know the age or the identity of the victim this moving. paramedics last night rushed him to highland hospital with serious injuries. he later died from those injuries. surveillance cameras are mounted outside the gas station on the intersection right next to where it is, the crosswalk where this happened. there's the possibility that some of this may have been captured on video. we've asked to speak with the oakland police traffic division to get an update and we're getting -- waiting to hear back from them this morning. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the ep past says a metal's resickle -- recycling company on the peninsula is producing the bray. sims is located at the port of redwood city. it shreds nearly 300,000 cars a year along with appliances and other metal products. the epa says the company is responsible for a major pollution problem involving lead, mercury, copper and zinc.

they warn sims could face fines of up to $32,000 a day. the air quality management district fined this same company $20,000 for a huge fire five years ago. the flames sent a large plume of black toxic smoke over the air. this video it from april of 2007. in san rafael, police say a woman was assaulted after she walked in on three burglars who were inside her home. it happened around 1:30 yesterday afternoon on woodland avenue. police say the 27-year-old victim interrupted a trio of burglars. she was knocked unconscious after one of them punched her in the head. she called police after waking up. but by then the suspects had taken off. anyone with information is asked to call san rafael police. 7:06. voters in new hampshire are

heading to the polls. the first in the nation started with nine people casting ballots in dixville knox just after midnight. we'll have more on how mitt romney gave his fellow candidates ammunition with what he said out there. caltrans will close all the lanes of westbound highway 4 tonight between summersville and loveridge roads. this starts at 10:00 tonight lasting through 5:00 tomorrow morning. a detour will be in place. this is all part of that highway 4 widening project that sal has been telling us about for so long. >> i know a lot of drivers are looking forward to this. let's check with sal. >> that's right. we're also looking at 237 in the santa clara valley this

thorning. we have slow traffic getting into the valley. it's just typical here at the bottleneck but after that it gets better. it has not been that bad of a commute with not that much slow traffic and certainly not a lot of slow traffic coming out of morgan hill and gilroy. not yet, anyway. moving along and taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is a nice drive. we still have not seen the big backups that we normally get on the bay bridge approach that we had in 2011, anyway. it seems to be taking a little bit of a break, kind of an extended holiday for the commute. highway 24, we had an earlier crash at the la fayette b.a.r.t. station. you may still see some slowing. 680 is backed up from 242 to 242. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. well, mostly sunny here in the morning and then we'll have increasing clouds. they are already beginning to inch closer. i would love to say there will be rain out of this system because you know and i know we need it.

there's really no sign of it from this system. you can see -- when you see this right there, right there -- right there. it's way too far away. at best, a few sprinkles. the pattern is stuck until the upper atmospheric global changes. it's all locked in. high pressure continues on the west coast. occasionally it gets nudged out. high pressure will build in behind that. that will give us an easterly northeasterly breeze starting tomorrow. today that system slides across the coast. mostly cloudy, cooler today. upper 50s and lower 60s. it's darned cold out there this morning. a lot of 30s showing up. low to mid, san jose bottomed out at 37. santa rosa is still 34. there have been 20s in the north bay. there's our system that's all we can pin our hopes. i know what you are saying. it's not gonna happen.

hampshire. now, the early results already in show mitt romney in the lead. ktvu's carol han is here now, says the race is kind of heating up for second place. carol? >> reporter: dave, both polls in new hampshire -- those poms in new hampshire don't close for another -- polls in new hampshire don't close for another midnight. but for the tiny town where the polls did open, they are in. the former utah governor has seen his star rise in the past few days. he's painted romney as putting politics first and quickly pounced on this comment romney made about health insurance providers that don't do their job. >> if you don't like what they do, you can fire them. i like being able to provide people that provide services to me. >> governor romney enjoys firing people. i enjoy creating jobs. >> reporter: although romney is favored to win today, hunt theman needs to put in a good

cleared to continue her work. alameda's county protective services is on a holiday. an audit blasted the agency for not carrying out formal internal reviews following the deaths of four children. the cases happened between 2008 and 2010. the report says the review process could have helped identify repeat problems and the need for policy improvements. a fresno lawmakers has introduced -- lawmaker has introduced hem lakes -- legislation that would make the review the mandatory. california drivers you could soon get a discount at the dmv. governor brown wants you to use the mail or the internet for registration. and if you do, you would get a $5 discount. a lot of drivers use the mail or internet for renews -- renewals. governor brown thinks this move

could save $100 million every year. the california supreme court will hear arguments for and against introducing the new state districts. a lawsuit has been stop -- have voted to stop this. some analysts say this could lead to more democratic-leaning districts. the session is due to begin at 10:00 this morning. 7:20. apple's chief executive could end up as 2011's highest paid u.s. executive. a new review shows cook's compensation package totaled $- - $378 million. most of that comes from a million shares of restricted apple stock. half of that vests in 2016. the rest, five years later. 1.8million is cook's basic salary and bonus. steve jobs took just $1 a year

peninsula, 88 -- 880 still has problems. that's on the shoulder causing slow traffic. in the south bay, the slowest traffic is on 85 so far from 87 up to highway 17 and then it clears up. let's go to steve. clouds already on the increase. north bay starting to get cloudy. we'll have a little bit of sun here for a while. fog is also on the move. it's cold. this is a week system. mostly cloudy by noon. cooler today, 44 to 54 on the temperatures. we'll go 64. san jose and serboth, 66 -- santa rosa both, 66. a lot of this air is trapped and with the cloud cover coming in, it will be tough to warm up. a weak system is on its way south. doesn't have much to it. maybe a few light sprinkles and drizzles. temperatures coming down a little bit.

has been shut down since december 6th. that's on the heels of an incident involving a cal firefighter here. 29-year-old albert bartel got into a brawl with another customer at 2:30, thanksgiving morning at the jack in the box off 11th and geary. police say that customer followed bartel to a nearby gas station and ran him over with his suv. bartel a former marine and single father has been in critical condition with a traumatic brain injury ever since at a bay area hospital. on his facebook support page his mother says that she's hoping for a miracle. now, police discovered that the jack in the box is operating without the proper extended hour permit. the fact that the place is ordered to shut its door between 2:00 and 6:00. now the neighbors are trying to get the permit but some maybes are fight -- but some neighbors are fighting it because of the nights and noise. they are showing up at a

meeting hall at 6:30. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. novato firefighters got a night off after two busy nights of putting out deliberately-set fires. police say at least 55 small fires have been set since saturday. this morning, novato dispatch told us no fires were reported overnight. about half of the weekend cries were set in the preserve. >> this is not a prank this. is very serious business people are engaging in. >> no homes have been damaged so far and no one has been hurt. police did tell us they responded to a garbage can fire last night. but it does not appear to be related. >> we have continuing coverage on the fire -- of the fires on ktvu.com. click on novato arson, click on the map to see each location

where a fire has been set. the inmate who escaped yesterday from the santa rita jail in dublin is back in jail this morning. he was recaptured last night. not far from the prison ground. he is doing time for a burglary incident. he escaped during the earlier in the day and that prompted a massive manhunt. but the weather may have play played a role in this. >> he did not have the clothes for this weather. that may have been what brought him back in. a preliminary here is set

for 9:00 a.m. for joseph naso. he's charged with killing four women. today's hearing will be the first hearing that prosecutors will talk about the case. he's pleaded not guilty and is representing himself. 7:32. an east bay investment group is getting ready to unveil its ambitious plan for the old oakland army base and wants to transform the base into a state of the art facility that would manage the flow of cargo in and out of the port of oakland. the group says the new business would create thousands of jobs and pump thousands of jobs into the economy. governor brown's plan to raise taxes could bring in billions of dollars less than he was counting on to help balance the budget. he says his plan would raise nearly $6.9 billion annually.

but the legislative analysts' office estimated it would generate $4.8 billion this year. this would boot sales tax and increase income tax on people making $250,000. san francisco's district five has a new supervisor. cristina alogi was slogged in yesterday to take ross mirakami's place. a call for new rules for dog walkers in san francisco will be voted on today by the board of supervisors. now, legislation introduced by supervisor scott wiener would license and regulate commercial dog walkers on park property. if approved, dog walkers would

be allowed to walk no more than eight dogs at a time. they would have to have special training and may an annual fee for a permit. three men were caught trespassing at the san francisco zoo late sunday night. san francisco police told "the examiner" that the men jumped over a back gate to get in the zoo. someone cut through fences to steal a squirrel morningky from the -- squirrel monkey from the zoo. that monkey has been returned. police captured a rain suspect after that suspect walked up to her and asked her out on a date. the man walked up to third street on saturday. that's when he asked the officer if she was married or available. the officer ran a record check and discovered that he was wanted for a rain in hayward. the officer then took the man into custody. hundreds and millions of dollars is set to come to b.a.r.t. with taupe -- to help with its

long-planned expansion in the south bay. the u.s. department of transportation is set to recommend some $900 million in federal aid. congress is expected to approve it. b.a.r.t. wants to -- wants to build an extension and hopes to have the project completed by 2016. work begins today on the first phase of the new smart train t will -- it will correct marin and sonoma counties. this is on a section of track from santa rosa to the marin sib center. 7:36. the new law that requires california schools to teach gay history took effect back on january 31st but some schools are not doing anything different. the "sacramento bee" reports some of the schools are waiting to get revised textbooks.

appreciate your willingness to welcome us here tonight. if i am president of the united states, i will not forget new hampshire. romney is expecting to win by a much larger margin in iowa where he beat rick santorum by just eight votes. it's a close race for second between ron paul and jon huntsman. huntsman zipped iowa to -- skipped iowa to focus on the grab knit state. if you can exceed exeffect takes in -- expectations in south carolina then -- >> over time, it's not gonna be this primary or the next but we'll have several races down the field, this field will narrow. just after midnight, the tine nip town of dixville knox sniffer delivered the first results -- romney and huntsman

when you get there. downtown san francisco still looks good. likewise for oakland on 8 0 northbound getting up to the coliseum. the morning commute in san jose as we look at the freeways. 85 is slow. as you drive into saratoga it gets better. if you are gonna drive to cupertino, approaching highway -- approach ecthe highway is slow up to the expressway. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. some sun this morning. we do have some clouds starting to increase. morning sun and then turning cloudy. there's not only higher clouds but fog there. the system -- the system right over here is developing too far to the west. if it came right over us, we would probably have a better opportunity for some rain. it's weak as it is.

and it's really mainly a cooler, mostly cloudy forecast. if any rain does fall, it will be bright. january looking very similar to what we had in december which is rain-free. first couple of weeks not much happening. after today, the rest of the week looks quiet. forecast models are wrestling and trying to break the ridge down. the pattern looks like it favors to the north. it doesn't look real promising yet this time of year. the low slides down the coast and high pressure comes in and as we head up against/thursday and maybe even friday, that -- wednesday/thursday and maybe even friday that low will give us a cool down. mostly cloudy, cooler today. could an few light showers and sprinkles. but most of this is developing too far to the west. we don't have a lot of time to warm up. so the cold air is trapped.

with the e pm a looking into allegations of polluting the bay. now the metal recycling company sims metal management is located at the port of redwood city. this is new video. the company shreds roughly 300,000 cars a year along with appliances and other metal products. epa says recent inspections found high levels of toxic material including pcbs lead and mercury in the sediments near the plant and at redwood creek. some of the levels are off the chart. pcbs are up to 10,000 times than what they should be. lead was up to 11 times more than what it should be, mercury, 100 -- 10 -- 110 times. the company is cooperating with the epa. and they've agreed to cease and desist.

summertime activity. airshows and air races. the pilot and ten other people died in that crash. regulators say there have been 150 accidents at races and shows in the last 30 years but this one was the first time spectators have been killed. the ntsb wants to protect both pilots and their fans. a las vegas man claims a united airlines employee threaten him at san francisco international airport. ivan gonzalez was trying to check in his 6-year-old son for a flight to boston on january 2nd. mr. gonzalez said the airline employee said he had not paid the fee to allow his son to travel alone. he recorded the conversation on the cell phone and he posted it on the internet. the conversation got heated amount would. -- a bomb can be heard saying "i get off at 9:30. why don't you meet me outside."

reporting live, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:03. in overnight news, the search continues for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash near oakland's eastmont mall. it happened around 11:30 on 73rd and bancroft avenue. allie rasmus is at police headquarters. what has a friend of the victims told you about the crash. the man was crossing the street. it was a busy four-way intersection and he was in the middle of the intersection when a car came and hit him and the car just kept driving right after that. let's show you the video of exactly where in happened. this happened over at 73rd and bancroft as you mentioned around 11:30 last night. now, that is located just a couple of blocks away from the oakland police station. they don't have a lot to go on. according to the police report, there were no witnesses at the time who were there that could
