the founding principals that made this country great. >> ktvu's ken pritchett is live now at a huntsman event with more on the fight for second place. >> reporter: we are at the john huntsman event and we are waiting for him to take the stage. we've heard some of the crowd begin to chant. we thought he might have coming up to the stage. but sounds like we're going to have to wait a little bit on that. john huntsman his campaign was actually all in new hampshire. more than 150 campaign events since just the summer. the surprise of the night was not of course mitt romney winning new hampshire, the real contest here the suspense was over the second place position. and this campaign the huntsman campaign had hoped that they surged. as we're seeing now with the results coming in it was not enough. the question is, will the huntsman campaign go on to

south carolina. what does it mean for his came pain to have that third place mark. huntsman did speak a short time before, he talked to cnn and huntsman said that he believed there were three tickets out of new hampshire and on to south carolina. but, right now huntsman's polling numbers in south carolina are quite low. so he would need some momentum from this third place finish here in new hampshire to do well there in south carolina. we do expect when john huntsman takes the stage to put a positive light on what happened here tonight with this third place finish but it is clear that his campaign was hoping for more than third place. they were hoping to inch closer to that second place. or at least to have a stronger finish here in new hampshire. in manchester, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. happening now, want to show you a live look of ron paul. he is thanking his supporters right now, as ken mentioned ron

enact some ground rules regarding social media. in the months leading to the move to take down the occupy oakland camp. san francisco police chief greg suhr says some officers unwillingly ticked off the public by sending facebook status messages or tweets. >> as we would activate officers or deactivate officers or move officers around depending on what was happening with the the occupy movement, officers were actually facebooking and tweeting to their friends and family when their hours might be changed. >> reporter: so when police got ready to move. >> we didn't tell anybody. because we didn't know if it would go out on some sort of social media which would have made the job harder. >> reporter: a new social media policy will be ready in days and a more formal policy will be presented to the police commission. social media experts say many organizations have had to come up with policies on the fly.

>> i definitely think thinks are moving fast. i think probably a lot of organizations were not aware that social media was going to have such a large impact. so it definitely hit them by surprise. >> reporter: many say social media rules make sense for the police. >> if they're trying to take down somebody that really needs to be taken down. it's important to keep that stuff confidential. >> it makes total sense. there's a big difference between sharing ideas and what's going on versus what's going on in the field. >> reporter: now chief suhr was careful to say he wants to encourage the officers to continue using social media. he just wants to provide some guidelines to do so. sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. the richmond city council will vote tonight on whether police can decline mutual aid requests if the agency asking for help uses violent tactics. richmond police helped university of california officers during a clash with

protesters this past fall. councilman jeff ritterman says they want to make it clear that richmond police will not be contributing to those kinds of quote criminal assaults in the future. we're learning new details tonight about the evidence against accused serial killer joseph nasso as a preliminary hearing got on its way. a probation officer testified about a search of naso's home a year and a half ago. he says he found a handwritten list of a list of women and locations in california. four of those locations matched the places where they found the bodies of four women. two of whom were from the bay area in the late 70s and the early 90s. a san francisco man was sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to have sex with a minor. federal prosecutors say richard

♪ we just keep on keepin' on ♪ ♪ keep on the u.s. department of transportation today gave the b.a.r.t. to san jose project a $900 million stamp of approval. the 10-mile extension will bring b.a.r.t. from fremont to the bariesta district. u.s. transportation officials recommended congress approve $900 million in funding. congress now has 60 days to ask for clarification but no vote is necessary. i think it's something that's long overdue. i think the bay area has needed more infrastructure to ease the car pool issue, the transportation issues around the area. there's so much congestion here. even during this recession that it can only help. the new line could be open by 2016 which would be two years earlier than first projected. san francisco elected officials announced today they plan to restore nearly $2

the next primary moves to south carolina where these contestants, candidates will try to move on and catch the heels of mitt romney. right now what you're looking at is jon huntsman headquarters. he hasn't spoken yet. we're waiting for him to come up to the podium. new hampshire is key for jon huntsman. he essentially bet the farm on new hampshire. the question now is will a third place showing with 17% of the vote be enough for jon huntsman to continue on in this campaign and continue on down in south carolina which as julie mentioned a moment ago, is the next primary. we're waiting for jon huntsman to speak. when he does, hopefully we can bring you some of that live. you can follow all of the results on our website ktvu.com. a bay area metal recycling plan is trying to come up with a plan to clean up its toxic mess in the bay. sims metal management plan has been ordered to come up with a plan by monday. the company processes old cars and appliances and when the pieces are loaded on to ships

numbers are indicative of that high pressure. all the cool air sinks and the valley air gets bad because of particulates. when you get a lot of wind or you get a high inversion, it lets that stuff mix out. but this time of year our boundary layer, basically the area that we breathe in is very short in terms of depth. the forecast then as the system remains out in the pacific, they are big and powerful. all that is doing is generating big surf along the coast. if it was a big system out across the bay that never really materialized. as we head into wednesday, there's high pressure all over us. it stays with us through the bay area weekend. so what does it mean? more of the same. no big changes. that means cold nights, frosty conditions. spare the air night tomorrow night. we might see another one of those next week. your computer model just
