third place finish. he and huntsman celebrated. >> i think we have a ticket to ride, hello south carolina. >> reporter: it remains to be seen if third place is good enough. but all candidates are saying hello south carolina as all of them have events scheduled there tomorrow. ktvu channel 2 news. the democrats also voted in new hampshire. president barack obama faced minimal opposition and finished with 82% of the vote. as ken mentioned south carolina is next and folks watch the returns from new hampshire. south carolina holds it's primary in 10 days. it's a larger state than new hampshire and more conservative with a substantial block of evangelical voters. it also has a higher unemployment rate than new hampshire. in south carolina, romney won't have the same home field advantage that he was able to leverage in new hampshire.

very first move by the team's new general manager mackenzie. >> this is where i came from, i'm back home now, okay. >> reporter: former raider linebacker reggie mackenzie left green bay to return to the team that drafted him back in 1985. the first thing mackenzie did as their general manager was fire head coach hugh jackson. >> as you move in, i want to bring my guy in. and mark was okay with that. >> he did some things great. and you know, like i said we ended up 8-8. we didn't make the play offs. >> reporter: so now mackenzie must find a replacement. >> is this a young coach that i feel good about? then away we go. >> if my father wasn't here, we needed someone to run that football side of the building and i needed to find the right person. i truly believe that reggie mackenzie is the right man for this job and i think you will all see that as we go along. >> reporter: it's been nine years since oakland made the

alleged victim is a student at that school. chandler is being held without bail at the santa clara county jail. a probation officer was the first witness called to testify today in marin county in the preliminary hearing of a suspected serial killer. 78-year-old joseph naso is accused of killing four northern california women back in the 70s and 90s. no cameras were in court today. the pictures you're seeing here are from last year. the probation officer testified he searched naso's home in 2009 and found what he called alarming photographs of nude women. probation officer also said the women were quote in various unnatural positions. some appeared to be asleep, some appeared to be unconscious, some nonresponsive. naso is acting as his own attorney. his preliminary hearing will determine if he will be held over and tried for murder. tonight animal rights activists are claiming responsibility for setting nine

cattle trucks on fire. the calinga cattle ranch is the biggest in the state and is a familiar landmark for drivers on i5. eric rasmussen has the story. >> reporter: this is the letter that went out to talk about how these fires were set. but other animal activists say they are not condoning what happened. >> reporter: the fires that burned 14 empty cattle trucks at harris ranch on sunday immediately appeared to be the work of arsonists. >> obviously there's something there that led them to believe that it was arson. >> reporter: now animal rights activists are claiming responsibility in an anonymous statement they provided details including how they used caroseen soaked rope and timers to pull off the fire. >> the horrific conditions that

driver who shot and killed a driver. authorities identified the victim as benjamin green of oakland. he was in the crosswalk at 73rd and bancroft when he was hit. police identify the vehicle as a dark colored van. the driver continued on without stopping. the intersection is about a block from hpd's substation. an exclusive video with howard jordan, what he revealed to us about a new plan to tackle violent crime. the san francisco board of supervisors failed to overturn a veto by mayor lee who may have led to a closure of sharp park course. environmental groups want to close it saying golfers are a threat to the san francisco guarder snake and the california red legged frog. today's vote was the same not

only on two, at least one person was detained early this morning on drug charges. law enforcement officials say a warrant was served at another house in san mateo county as part of the same operation. two men are behind bars for shooting high caliber pellet guns at para gliders. one of the men has gotten in

trouble before for a similar crime. >> reporter: frank, both of those men are in jail here tonight. the district attorney's office tells us one of those men was already on probation for shooting someone with a pellet gun. on a day like this you will see several para gliders over head. but that tranquil flight was stopped when two men aimed high caliber pellet guns at para gliders. >> this sport is already dangerous without having one firing a pellet gun at you. >> we don't need that out here. we like to keep this place fun and clean and safe.

it's not just us, people, families come out here. people walking their dogs. >> reporter: the men pleaded not guilty to two deadly counts of assault with a deadly weapon. just five months ago, amatori pled not guilty for shooting someone with a pellet gun in south san francisco. although no one was hurt this time, the people who love this breathtaking support say they are relieved the two suspects are in custody. >> if you find a para glider and someone wants to shoot you with handgun, pellet gun or anything, you're a sitting duck. that's not cool, not right. >> reporter: both men are being held here on $25,000 bail. they were arranged yesterday and are expected to be back in court by the end of the month. reporting live in redwood city, loranne blanco. a fight at a jack-in-the- box left one man with a brain

iranians iranians from somali pirates. 57-year-old jose franco is currently being held apart from other inmates with maximum security precautions at the santa rita jail. dublin police captured franco last night during a seven hour search. he escape while being taken from a bus to the reception area. a crucial development today that appears to make it all but certain that the b.a.r.t. to san jose extension will finally be built. robert honda tells us a federal agency is recommending that congress approve $900 million for the first phase of that project. >> reporter: if all goes as planned, b.a.r.t. training will stop at fremont then come 16 miles into milpitas, san jose and santa clara.

they killed my jumbaco idea? i tried. a new report from the federal government focuses on problems associated with bing drinking in america. the centers for disease control says one in six adults is a bing drinker. bing drinkering down an average of eight drinks in one sitting and do so four times a month. most are young, 18 to 34 years old. the cbc says bing drinkering account for 30,000 deaths a year in alcohol related accidents and in long term health issues. researchers from uc san francisco and the university of alabama say smoking a joint once a week doesn't harm the lungs as cigarette smoking does. in fact, smoking marijuana occasionally is actually

associated with a small but statistically significant increase in lung capacity. however for those who smoke more often perhaps two or more joints daily for several years the data is less conclusive. researchers say they did not have enough marijuana smokers to form a conclusion. ktvu's alex savdige speaks to the recipient on why he feels such a connection to his donor's family and it's not just because he has their son's liver. >> i just have a new chance in life now. >> reporter: the man who may have saved murphy's life is charles butler jr. a 23-year- old merchant marine with a bright future who was shot to death in oakland during the holidays. butler was an organ donor and murphy received his liver.

homicide in the city so far this year. that killing comes as the oakland police department is getting ready to implement a new crime fighting plan next week. only on 2, heather holmes learned exclusive details about the new strategy during her one on one interview today. >> reporter: homicides spiked last year in oakland. chief howard jordan does not make any excuses and says 2012 will be different. but here we are just 10 days in and two people were shot and killed. >> reporter: bancroft avenue in oakland a robbery and shooting. in this case the male victim is expected to survive. but for more than 100 people last year violence would end their life. >> and particularly last year to me the most telling was the three toddlers that were killed. that was unacceptable.

that should not be tolerated. outraged by those killings, chief howard jordan is finalizing the details of his attack on violent crime. the effort comes as the city saw its homicide total hit triple digits last year, 110 people killed. double the number of homicides in san francisco and nearly triple the number in san jose. >> we're going to roll this plan out next week. it will be focused on 100 blocks. we're going to use all available resources to address crime in those areas. in addition to the 100 block crack down, mainly in neighbors in east oakland, the chief says he will implement a new program. >> if you don't stop the violence, here are the thing that is can happen to you.

found high levels of toxins flowing from a plant into the bay, they are facing charges. the problem may have been going on for decade. >> reporter: today we found workers in protective gear using vacuums and cleaning up. >> it wasn't just that we found nasty toxic material in san francisco bay it was that we found them at levels that really were alarming for us. >> reporter: the epa says it's march and august inspections found five times the amount of lead allowed by federal law. 110 times the amount of mercury and 10,000 times the acceptable level of pcbs. which the agents say are harmful to the wildlife around the area. while unsure when the violations started the epa says the problem could date back 20 years. >> but the goal is to make sure

oakland raiders owner announced that the team is exploring the possibility of moving back to los angeles. as we mentioned earlier on this newscast, this comes on the same day that head coach jackson was fired. and lloyd lacuesta found her today at a restaurant. >> reporter: he was not happy to see us. through the windows of the restaurant we could see people talking to coach jackson. but he made it clear he didn't want to talk to us saying he was here only to meet with friends. he did tell a reporter soon after his firing that he was shocked by what happened. jackson said at a meeting, newly hired general manager mackenzie told him, we no longer need your services. and when he asked why he said,
