ktvu's claudine joins us from the scene. >> reporter: police are still trying to figure out what led up to the violence. at this point we don't have any information on a motive or suspect information. really piecing together right now what led up to the violence here at the creek side bar and grill. we do know three people are in the hospital this morning because of it, though. one person was shot outside of the bar and grill, two people stabbed, all injuries considered not life- threatening. police say about 1:45 this morning a bystander flagged down police for help. police also tell us other officers who happened to be nearby heard gunshots and responded to the scene. >> officers heard gunshots at the creek side. they ponded to the scene whcht they arrived -- scene. when they arrived, two people were injured and we had another person walk into the hospital with injuries. >> reporter: now, we also saw a silver dodge charger at the

scene around 5:00 this morning. it's still unclear at this point if it's anything as even connected to the restaurant. according to the website, the bar here was open until two this morning and we know one bystander called police and one other person drove victims to the hospital, so there are witnesses and other people in and around the area when this happened. we believe police are talking to those people trying to piece all of this together. live here in san jose, included ian wong, ktvu news overnight fire at a tesla battery testing facility is under investigation. just before 1 a.m. this morning, crews responded to the building on deer creek road in palo alto. firefighters say the building's sprinkler system was activated and quickly put out the fire. it is part of the company's corporate and development products. a $15,000 reward is being

offered in connection with a series of arsons in novato over the past few days. an estimated 56 fires were set between saturday and monday. they are believed to be related, but so far, no suspects have been identified. know vato police and fire officials are investigating the case with help from more than a half dozen other local, federal and state agencies. a san jose elementary school teach ser still in jail this morning -- teacher is still in jail this morning accused of sexually assaulting a child. 35-year-old craig chandler was arrested yesterday. he's been teaching at whaly elementary for nine years, however, police aren't saying if the alleged victim is a student at the school. police are asking anyone else who may have been victimized by chandler come forward now. ktvu's craig debro will have more this morning

police dogs patrolling pleasanton high schools, that's an idea being explored by the trustees. noelle walker is at foothill high school to explain what the police and principals are saying. >> reporter: the school dopoffs have -- drop-offs have started this morning. many are wondering when the school district will start using the dogs. last night, the board of trustees discussed a proposal to use drug sniffing dogs on three high school campuses. the district has seen a 40% increase in drug and alcohol suspensions this year over last year. >> we're hoping the school does not become a place where kids can safely and easily bring their drugs and think that would be one more helpful tool in order to help us with that. we're not trying to make a production out of this. we don't want a bunch of kids standing around, peeking through windows, trying to figure out who's car is going to get searched or who is going

to get busted, we'll do it while the kids inner class. >> reporter: pleasanton police have two dogs that are trained to find narcotics, so this would be no extra cost to the school district. legally, the district checkd with their advisors and they're well within their rights to bring dogs on the campus. the school board is meeting later this month on the 24th and could make a decision then. reporting live in pleasanton, noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. as expected, mitt romney easily won the republican presidential primary but ron paul says his second place finish shows his campaign has gained momentum. >> we certainly had a clear-cut victory, but we're nibbling at his heels. >> coming up at 7:15, we'll have a live report there our washington d.c. newsroom with attacks romney's expects from his rival san francisco supervisors

are considering putting a measure on the june ballot that would change the city's public financing of candidates running for office. the measure would make it more difficult for candidates running for mayor or for a board of supervisors seat to qualify for matching funds. during the mayor's race last november, there was criticism about candidates who stayed in the race despite doing poorly because they couldn't drop out without having to pay back the funding they received giant oracle is moving it to downtown san jose. the red wood city-based company is opening a 66,000 square foot office space in the sobrato building. oracle has made no comment on the move but analysts are saying the new office is expected to bring in 440 new employees to the downtown area. that could mean a lot of new business for nearby business owners workers at the american

licorice company voted to end their strike. they've been picketing outside the company's union city factory 24 hours a day since december 5th. earlier this week, they were even joined by the members of the occupy oakland group. the workers and the company have been at odds over health benefits, pension and wage issues, but they did come to an agreement yesterday. the new contract includes a new health care plan and an hourly wage increase of 30 cents. the employees go back to work on monday all right. well going to work right now, what's going on in contra kosta county? >> things are getting busier and busy all over the east bay as we look at highway 4. we're getting more busy traffic on 680, 242, 680 also a couple of minor incidents coming off the venetia bridge. there's a crash in martinez on the shoulder. as we move over to the panol

area, 580 looks. good. if you're driving in haywood city and fremont, it's looking busy. the bay bridge poll plaza getting into san francisco, it looks like it's more crowded today than yesterday. moving on to the san jose, look at that slow traffic here in san jose heading up north on northbound 280. getting up to highway 17, we've seen some slow traffic. there's also an accident northbound 85 at highway 17, and the right lane is blocked, so people may be avoiding 85 northbound and taking 280. this doesn't look right to me. i bet you even though chp is not reporting anything right now, there's some sort of wreck or stalled vehicle on 280 northbound. we'll find out more and get it to you it's a clear, cold morning. lots of 20s in the north bay. it's another dry day once we

get going we'll get into the mid-60s. higher clouds this the south from yesterday's system. there it goes, just too far. retro graded, went back out in the pacific and it's like stretching a rubber band, took all the cloud cover with you. there's plenty going on in the pacific and the gulf of alaska. will anything make it this way? maybe next week. let's look at our grim rain numbers. santa rosa should have 17 pluz. san francisco should have over 10-1/2, they're only 32% of normal and san jose in the bucket so far, should be 6.07, they have a mere 1.55, 26% of normal. the pattern is dry. it will stay this way at least into the weekend and maybe changes early next week but mostly clear, it's cold. hazy sunshine, slightly warper. winds in the east bay hills. first two weeks of january,

shipments. reportedly the discussions were suspended after kim jong il's death 7:17. today, first lady michelle obama will announce a new project of her joining forces campaign to help current military troops and veterans. more than 100 u.s. medical schools will commit to training future doctors who will treat veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder. the joining forces campaign is designed to gain support from citizens, businesses and community groups to support military families well, a lockdown at a washington state army base has now ended. however, the search for some missing equipment is going on. the base has been shut down for almost a week since some valuable weapons accessories disappeared. they include things like scopes and night vision goggles, but no guns or ammunition. the army is offered a $10,000

reward in that case 7:18. a preliminary hearing resumes this morning in marin county for a suspected serial killer. 78-year-old joseph naso was accused of killing four northern california women in the 1970s and 1990s. naso's former probation officer was the first witness yesterday. no cameras were allowed in court. this is video from last year. the probation officer testified about photographs he found in a 2009 search of naso's reno home. he testified the pictures showed nude women in, quote, various unnatural positions, some appear to be asleep, some appear to be unconscious and some nonresponsive of the preliminary hearing is expected to last two weeks the san jose man accused in a deadly rampage is scheduled to enter a plea today. 33-year-old paul castillo faces a possible death sentence if convicted. police in sacramento arrested

of legendary coach joe paterno. at alumni town hall meetings in pittsburgh this afternoon, another one in philadelphia on thursday and on friday in new york city major league baseball owners are not planning to take up the issue of the oakland a's relocation debate during some pretty important meetings this week. the oakland a's cannot leave the coliseum for san jose without getting the approval of major league baseball team owners. that hot bulleten issue -- button issue is not on their agenda when they meet today starting in arizona. the 49ers plan to build their new stadium on this great america parking lot. santa clara has a plan for the parking. the city council okayed the deal last night to upgrade ith main parking lot -- it's main parking lot to 7,000 parking lots. great america had its lease extended to 2074 with only some small rent increases.

it is 7:29. a san jose teacher is being held without bail accused of sexually assaulting a child. ktvu channel 2 reporter craig debro is outside the school where he got the latest from a district official moments ago. morning, kraig >> reporter: i've been talking to school officials and parents this morning. according to the district, they sent home a letter with the kids yesterday. we've yet to speak to a daytona who received the -- parent who received the letter. parents are here to ask questions about the horrible allegation. one of the teachers here is accused of assaulting a child. craig chandler has been teaching at this school for

nine years. he's 35 years old. right now he's in the santa clara county jail on these charges. according to court records, he's supposed to be in jail on friday. according to some of the district officials here, again, they say they sent home a letter with kids yesterday for their parents but again we're still trying to figure out if that letter -- where that letter is and what it says. district officials will not tell us this morning if the -- the victims in this case or victim this this case are actually students at this school. an assistant superintendent again, we spoke to this morning, we also spoke to another person with the district and says the kids here at the school are safe. >> we want to reiterate to our public and community that our students' well-being and safety continue to be our no. 1 concern and we will continue to work with that to address that need and make sure they are safe. >> reporter: and district

officials are referring all questions beyond that to san jose police department. we've called them this morning to find out if there is more than one victim, if the victim was a student at this school, and we're still working on that. time now 7:31. 47 laptop computers were stolen from the nursing department at solano community college over the holidays. they were last seen december 23rd when teachers came back on january 4th, the computers were gone. they had been locked up and scored inside large metal carts thad been locked up. there was no sign of forced entry into the building and the investigation continues there's still no stop sign at an east palo alto intersection with a 6-year-old fwirl was killed in september of last year. the city council approved installing flashing signs and pavement markings that say slow, school crossing at bay road and gloria way. and parking is no longer allowed near the crosswalk.

the mercury news reports the city will monitor whether or not those improvements have been enough before they take steps to install a stop sign it is 7:32. a well-known d.j. remains in the hospital following a hit-and-run crash in san francisco over the weekend. according to facebook posts, christopher evans, also known as d.j. tough one, is in intensive care at san francisco general with a broken pelvis. police say he was hit while riding his bicycle near ocean and geneva avenues. it happened just after midnight this past sunday. the driver took off. if you have any information, you are asked to call san francisco police and it's grim news about young people and crime. three bay area counties rank in the top 10 in the state with the highest rates of youth homicide. monterey county is at the top of this list for 2009. alameda county is second, contra kosta county is 6th, san

francisco county comes in 8th. analysts believe the increase in youth killings on -- blames the increase on youth killings on the rising number of violent street gangs last year, 110 people were killed in oakland and so far this year two people have lost their lives to violent crime. coming up at 7:47, the actions interim police chief howard jordan plans to take against this trend in the coming weeks time right now, 7:33. the oakland police department has reportedly disciplined two police officers for violating department policy during a recent occupy protest. the bay citizen reports the violations happened during the clash at the plaza. sources say the department suspended officer john hargraves for 30 days because he covered up his name badge with a piece of tape and lieutenant clifford wong was demotord to sergeant for failing to properly report that incident.

the protesters at america's first occupy camp, the one in new york, they're celebrating a victory this morning. last night, new york city police took down the barricades surroundingzy cote park. -- zucotti park. the police say the barricades are no longer needed. hundreds of protesters have returned to the park. we're not sure how police will respond 7:35 now, happening now, joran van der sloot is back before a judge in peru this morning. this is a live look inside the courtroom in lima. his trial was supposed to happen friday, but the judge decided to give van der sloot more time to decide how to plead. se charged with killing 21-year- old stephany flores in a hotel room in 2010. he was on the far right in the line-up of men there. the slaying happened five years to the day after the disappearance of american

given a higher priority time now, 7:36. plans to expand sew gnoma county's -- sonoma county's airport moves ahead. the project was approved by the board of supervisors. it would allow the charles schultz airport to accommodate more detailly commercial flights -- daily commercial flight. right now, there's only about five or six every day. supervisors will return to that topic in about two weeks for a final vote tomorrow, the golden gate bridge district could describe on fare headaches. it would raise an additional $2 million a year. if it's approved the one-way fare between sausalito and san francisco would be $5. that's up 15 cents and the run between lacksburg and san francisco would go to $6 in each direction. the district is also considering a plan that would guarantee commuters a park spot at the larksburg parking lot for $60 a month.

most riders say they're not surprised by the fare hikes but want something in exchange. >> when they increase costs and they increase fares, they increase our costs as commuters, that they should provide a better service and take care of the roads better >> now, if the board approves the fare hike, they would likely take effect july 1st. still no word of when the parking fee could start members of the silicon valley leadership group will meet with congress and let them know that there's strong bay area support for extension of bart to san jose. yesterday, a federal agency recommended that congress approve $900 million for the first part of the project. that would include two new stations and 10 miles of rail ending near the san jose flea market. supporters say bart would be a welcome addition to the county and there will an 60-day review period before congress votes on

to lima, peru, where joran van der sloot has just pleaded guilty to the 2010 murder of a 21-year-old peruvian woman. she was killed five years to the day of the unsolved murder of natalee holloway in aruba. this is a live picture now, we just saw flashed a moment ago of van der sloot. he has pleaded guilty to the murder of a 22-year-old peruvian woman. there is a panel of judges running over this case and we're not sure what kind of sentence he will be getting or where elend up, but again, the breaking news, he's pleaded guilty in peru. taking a live look at the big board right now, u.s. stocks are mixed at the moment as worries about a recession in europe outweigh hopes that the u.s. economic recovery will gather steam. the dow is currently down 21.

investigating the city's second homicide of the year. police say a man was shot just after 9:00 last night on foothill boulevard. when these paramedics arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene. so far, police have not released any information about a suspect now, oakland's interim police chief, howard jordan, is rolling out a plan to stop violent crime. yesterday the police were called to the scene of a robbery and a shooting on bancroft avenue. in this case, the victim is expected to survive. however, the same cannot be said for 110 people who lost their lives to violence last year on the streets of oland >> we're going to roll this plan out next week. it will be focused on the 100 blocks. we are going to use all available resources to address crime in those areas. >> last year, 110 people, including three small children were killed on the streets of oakland. he will also implement a new gang prevention program.

good morning, welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. topping our news at 8:00, violence at a san jose bar and grill. it happened on west alma avenue just after 1:45 this morning. two people were stabbed, one person was shot. ktvu's claudine wong has been there all morning. what triggered the shooting? >> reporter: that's what police are trying to figure out. we're not even sure at this point if this incident began inside or if this was simply a parking lot situation. now that we have some daylight, we can show you just how big this parking lot is to the left side of this bar and grill. it actually is a pretty big

parking lot and we saw police officers stationed throughout this area. we know the person that was shot was shot out front. we're not sure about the two people who were tabbed. police are trying -- stabbed. police are trying to figure out what happened. we want to give you a look at the scene early this morning, it happened about 1:48 this morning. this bar and grill, according to the website, still had its bar open until 2:00, so pretty close to closing time when this all went down. police tell us a bystander actually flagged down a plifr but a -- police officer but a lieutenant told us officers were nearby and heard gunshots. >> officers heard gone shuts at the creek side inn. they responded to the skoon and when they arrived, there were two people that were yurd. half an hour later, we had another person walk into the hospital with additional injuries. >> reporter: we also want to show you this video. this was a silver dodge charger that was towed away from the parking lot of this restaurant.

considering patrols using drug sniffing dogs. >> reporter: we taungd to them as -- talked to them as they were starting to arrive at school today and most of them are pretty much in agreement. the problem is how you get drugs off campus and the solution could be bringing in the drug-sniffing dogs. the school district trustees met yesterday to hear proposals to use the dogs. it comes on the heels of parents at foothill high school here expressing concerns over increased drug use. now, in the past year, the district has had a 40% increase in drug and alcohol-related suspensions. as students arrived for classes this morning, we asked the parents how they feel about drug dogs on campus. >> i don't have a problem with at all. because i know that there are kids on campus who use, so if it gets them what they deserve, then that's fine with me. >> reporter: now the school would use the two dogs the police department already has to sniff out the narcotics.

it is 8:24. a kayaker made an unusual discovery off the coast of florida. he came across an injured dog named barney swimming half a mile from the shore. the man pulled the dog on to his kayak and took him back to shore. it turns out barney's owner was killed in a drunk driving crash earlier that day. the dog apparently got spooked after the accident and jumped into the water. barney is now back with his

welcome back, time now is 8:28. students are arriving at a san jose elementary school this morning for the first time since a veteran teacher was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a child. ktvu's kraig debro is there and just talked to one of the accused teacher's former students, correct? >> reporter: yeah, dave. a lot of people are surprise $and shocked about what allegedly happened. this is ob whaly elementary school. we still don't know there the school or police officials if the allegations about the sexual assault took place at the school with a student, those are questions that still have to be answered. as you said, the school is just starting here. district officials are meeting parents as they arrive to answer questions.

they're also handing out a little pamphlet, a little piece of paper generally describing what happened. but the students in the teacher's class today are going to have a substitute and of course the regular teacher is craig chandler. police say he's facing aggravated sexual assault charges. district officials are not telling us if the victim or victims are students at the school. officials told us parent would have to call police to find out if that is the case. the assistant superintendent said a letter went home yesterday with the kids. is far, we have not seen to any parent that received a letter. as we said, we spoke to a couple of staff members, parents, students, everybody is just completely shocked >> i had mr. chandler for second grade and he was a really good teacher. >> reporter: he was in. >> yeah. >> reporter: are you shocked about these allegations? >> yes.

the oakland police department has reportedly disciplined two of its officers for violating department policy during a recent occupy protest. the bay citizen reports the violations happened during the clash at frank ogawa plaza after the day of action in early november. the sources say the department suspended officer john hargraves for 30 days for covering up his name badge with a piece of tape. clifford wong was demotord to sergeant for failing to report that incident. and the proest at the first occupy camp in -- protesters at the first occupy camp in new york are celebrating this morning. police took down the barricades around the park that was the home of the movement. the police say the barricades are no longer necessary. hundreds of protesters have now returned to zuccotti park. it's not clear how the police will respond to that the oakland a's relocation

debate is a hot topic for bay area sports fans but apparently not for baseball owners. the a's cannot leave the coliseum in oakland for san jose, where they'd like to go, without the approval of 75% of baseball's team owners. well, today, owners will begin league-wide meetings in arizona, but the a's relocation issue is not on their agenda. the league has been studying the potential move since 2009 but still has not released a long-awaited report on the topic the raiders share the coliseum complex with the a's and they have their sites also set on -- sight also set on a new stadium. a 49ers plan to build their new stadium on this great america parking lot, now santa clara has a plan where to put the cars.

expected to survive mitt romney easily came in first in the new hampshire republican presidential primary. ron paul came in second, jon huntsman came in third. all the candidates are now headed to south carolina. this is ahead of the primary there january 21st and drug-sniffing police dogs patrolling pleasanton high schools. this is an idea being explored by school district officials. ktvu's noelle walker joining us live from foothill high school and i understand you're talking to students. what are they saying? >> reporter: dave, we were talking to students and parents as they tarted arriving for -- they started arriving for classes this morning. the pleasanton school district trustees met last night to hear a proposal to use those dogs. parent her at foothill high school have been expressing concerns about increased drug use. one mom told me this morning she has no problem with police dogs on campus. in the past year, the district has had a 40% increase in drugs

and alcohol-related suspensions from 45 last year to 63 so far this year. as students arrive for class today, we asked how they'd feel about dogs sniffing around their lockers for drugs. >> i mean it's going to be really sucky for everyone that is going to get caught. i feel bad for them but their decision to bring it on school. >> unfortunately the emergence of drugs and the increase of drug abuse is a terrible problem. while we have a great community, i want to get in front of this problem and i'm eager to support this endeavor. >> reporter: now, the school district says they've gotten some legal advice that says they are well within their right to use dogs like these to sniff out drugs. the pleasanton pd has two drug sniffing dogs, so it wouldn't cost the district anything more to use the dogs that are already at the police department. there's been no decision made about the proposal yet but the board of trustees meets later
