january. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. steven has the forecast. >> we do have clear skies and temperatures will start to warm up pretty fast but they are cold again this morning. 20s, 30s and 40s. not as much as a breeze but still mid- to upper 60s in a few locations. close to 70 degrees south. >> traffic on southbound 101 approaching the interchange, looking good no major problems. this morning's commute on the bridge good heading to the toll plaza. >> after a high-speed chase came to an end on an oakland freeway on ramp, it started when officers tried to pull over a drunk driver. the driver kept going and he was getting on and off the freeways finally ending up in oakland. he tried to get back on interstate 880 and tried to

make a u turn on the on ramp. a cruiser was able to nudge his car and stop him. they had to use a taser on the driver. he and a passenger were arrested. overnight news, one man is in the hospital after a stabbing outside a san jose bar. that happened at the escape bar near fox worthy avenue. san jose police tell us here that two men started fighting inside the bar. the fight then moved outside near an apartment complex and that is when one man stabbed the other in the neck. the victim is expected to be okay. police have arrested a suspect. our time is 6:02. two women now in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a violent attack in the sunset district in san francisco. here is more about the attacker's weapon, which was a hammer. >> reporter: yes. this was such a brutal and bloody attack, dave. in fact, so violent that we

can't show you a lot of images because they are so graphic but it started here at the house you see behind me on 20th. a woman delivering food hear walked in on the middle of a fight between a man and woman. he was beating the woman with a hammer and turned on the delivery person. she ran back to the restaurant to try to get help. it is just a under ro the corner. this unfolded at about 9:30 last night. the suspect got away. now both victims are described as older and asian. they were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. right now we are working on getting a description of that suspect and police are trying to figure out why this man would attack these women so violently. your time is 6:03. pg&e crews are right near the microsoft campus in mountainview where high voltage power lines came down. here is more about what is

happening out there. >> reporter: well, they are still trying to clean this up. they were able to divert power so power is back on after midnight but you can see if we pan up, the problem is still out here this morning. there are two high transmission power towers out here and the second tower is the one where all the problems are. if you take a look at the left side of the tower it is missing the transmission lines that normally sit on top of them. they came down about 9:20 last night. people around here said they heard a loud explosion and there were multiple calls to the fire department. now, the fire department did have to put out a small fire. about an acre was burned. one was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. we don't hoe his condition at this hour, but that fire put out pretty quickly. then they worked to restore power. now this morning, the problem is cleaning up and trying to get rid of the power lines that are still down out here. we take a look back live here.

this is the end of uh-uh ven neda creek. you can see in the trees here at the trail head that those power lines are still tangled in and around there. we have seen pg&e out here since we got here at 4:00 this morning. they said they would be out here all morning long as they are waiting for heavy machinery. this whole area will be filled with pg&e crews as they work to clean that mess up later this morning, but for now we are just standing by with this area still shut down. well two bay area teachers will be arraigned on two sex charges in two different cases. marie johnson is due. she is the woman accused of having a six-month sexual relationship with a male student who was just 14 at the time. johnson teaches at granada high

school. they said the relationship began with the game words with friends and developed through text messages and facebook. then at noon, teacher craig chandler will be in court in san jose suspected of 24 counts of child molestation. they are not releasing specification but they say one student was assaulted on campus last fall. chandler was arrested on tuesday and has been held in jail ever since. oakland police released a sketch of two homicide suspects. they are suspected of killing an oakland father right in front of his son. the gunman is described as 17 to 20 years old. he is there on the left. dark complex and dread locks. the accomplish the same age, having very short hair. police say they killed the 39- year-old at the market in east oakland on august 28th right in front of his six-year-old son. >> our time now is 6:06 this

morning president obama will ask congress for more power to reorganize the federal government and cut costs. we'll have >> live report on which federal agencies the president wants to merge. also a report about new transcripts that show federal reserve chairman ben bernanke wasn't worried too much about the housing crisis in 2006. the transcripts revealed discussions during his first meeting as a chairman of the federal reserve. at that time housing prices were just starting to fall but he said he thought the american economy could still recover. he also according to the straps scripts said he didn't believe the fall in housing prices would hurt growth in the economy. 7 minutes after 6:00 now. let's go check on traffic. sal. >> good morning pam and dave. we're looking pretty good. we keep looking at the east bay of course. that is where the traffic gets

busy earliest. 8 880 traffic is moving along well. the toll plaza westbound bay bridge, that traffic is light coming into san francisco. and san mateo bridge looks good to the peninsula. >> 101 and 280 looks good there. >> good morning. friday and skies are clear. a little cold for some. not too bad for others right now. i've seen from 30s to upper 40s. if there is a puff of a breeze, the temperatures have held. we'll have sunshine, mild to warm today. there will not be as much of a northeast breeze coming out of the east bay hills. there is still a little but yesterday gusts 40 miles an hour. oakland up to 70. not as warm today, but still mild and warm. >> sunny at noon and mild to warm later today. 60 to 70 degrees. santa cruz 70 yesterday. fog on the coast yesterday.

that has peeled off, we're good to go. i know everywhere i go rain next week? well let's ease into this. today, tomorrow, mild warm days. starting sunday into monday, colder. i still say our best bet will be next weekend so we're 8 days out. we'll see. things could change, but it is really tough to break down a pattern that has been favoring dry weather for about two months. let's not jump on the bandwagon yet. there are positive signs. a cold morning for the north bay. they get upper 20s and 30s. if it wasn't for napa airport having a breeze, they would also be in there. a wind that makes a difference in the windchill. it is cold but helps with the afternoon high temperatures. clouds here. a system digging into the north will change our weather to a

cold der pattern sunday, monday. >> upper 60s to near 70. nevada 66. 65 in the city. same for brentwood. santa cruz 66. 67 red wood city. all signs say sunny, mild to warm tomorrow with temperatures in the low 60s for the 49ers and saints. okay on saturday. much cooler on sunday, monday. time is 6:09. a power company may face fines because of the fierce wind storm that knocked down more than 200 power poles near pasadena. investigation reveals many of those polls were overloaded with equipment and that is against the law. more than 40,000 people lost power for as long as a week. >> incredible pictures. >> ten minutes after 6:00. a violent accident involving a wood chipper in nevada county. >> somehow something got caught

killing a landscaper. a tow truck hauled it away after accident. it happened when a foreman crew was clearing apply straight property. one man became caught in that massive machine. >> it is a crew and they were all working indifferent spots. someone heard him screaming and they came up and saw it and called fire and us and everyone else. >> investigators say accord, rope or even the victim's clothing may have become caught in the machine. pg&e could be hit with a huge fine for the explosion that killed 8 people and destroyed almost 40 homes. that is after a report was issued saying violations by pg&e led to that deadly blast in 2010. they got rates for safety improve. ings but the money was not used on safety projects. >> we found out this morning, president obama will be making

a big announcement from the white house. he is going to ask congress for new power to organize the federal governor. alison. >> reporter: president obama wants to be able to merge and eliminate some government agencies, his goal is to save taxpayers money and make government more efficient. the plan he is going to announce in just a couple of hours gives neuro organizing power to the president, merges six commerce and trade agencies that have overlapping programs and it gives congress an up or down vote on the president's proposals. it is not new for president obama to rail against government inefficiency but this is his biggest action yet to try to deal with it. the obama administration says merging them could cost up to 2,000 federal jobs but save $3 billion over ten years. i have sent e-mails to republican leaders this morning to try to get their reaction and we'll bring that to you when we get it here on ktvu.

we're live in washington dc, allison burns, channel 2news. >> while the oyster farm debate is not letting up. last month the national park service closed on a report that recommended ending the drake's bay oyster company's lease. now at the request, national academy of sciences will review the report. she is a long time supporter of the company and said the report was not objective. jury selection continues in the trial of the suspected gang member of killing a san francisco man and his two sons. he is charged with three counts of murder. police say in 2008 he shot the man and his two sons while they were sitting in their car. he thought one of the sons was arrival gang member. he has pleaded not giddy. >> van der sloot faces up to 30 years in prison when he is

sentenced today. he pleaded guilty on wednesday to all charges related to the 2010 death of the 21-year-old stephanie flores. he said he killed her in a fit of rage when she discovered he was linked to the 2005 disappearance of american teenager natalee holloway. her body was never found and a judge declared her legally dead yesterday. a former prime minister is among the 650 political prisoners who were released today. that movies the latest step by the me em marie scream to get them to lift sanctions. human rights activists say hundreds more are locked up. >> ahead of the arab league fears a possible civil war in syria as there are more reports

and many monitors sent in by the arab league are walking out on the mission. one former monitor that left said the presence of the monitors did not stop the violence against antigovernment protestors who want him to step down. the quarantine ended for six young bison at the park. they arrived six weeks ago. now, the chronicle reports that park officials put the bison in the main paddock with the older bison. there were originally 7 in all but one died last week after a dog got into their paddock. bison have called golden gate park home since the 1970s. it is all part of a program to prevent their extension. are you feeling friday light? >> i am. i have been eating well and drinking well. >> you look good. >> thank you. >> what about the traffic? >> good morning, everybody. yes, it is friday light. we're doing well, so far.

at this thyme of the morning we do see traffic getting a little busier on highway 4 but not a lot of stop and go except as you prepare to go through the construction zone. interstate 880 in both directions, that traffic looks good here. and we keep watching the south bay and we don't see a lot going on. that is the way we like it. we have had a couple of fender benders but not a lot of traffic on the south bay or peninsula. steve, sal. >> the sports guys are here early. i wonder if anything big is going on this weekend? >> i can't think of anything. >> thank you. >> we do have a really quiet pattern this morning. yesterday in the east bay hills pretty good gusts, 40 miles per hour. a lot less today. santa yousefzadeh and oakland hit 70. it will be another mild to warm day. a little component of an easterly breeze at fairfield and napa. i have seen 19 miles per hour but not the 42 be had

yesterday. coldest temperatures toward the north or east. 29. a lot of 30s here. concord 32. yesterday temperatures in concord ranged from 29 to 46 depending on if you had a breeze or no breeze. the bigger concern sunday, monday when a cold der system will move in and bring our temperatures down, but today and tomorrow mild and warm, mid- 60s, upper 60s to near 70 degrees. i don't see much change tomorrow, but i see a bigger change into sunday and monday. highs in the 50s. the wind will pick up out of the west and a cold der system, but i don't see rain yet. we'll have more on that in about ten minutes. >> 6:20 is the time. big airline under bankruptcy. the wall street journal reports american is looked over by three possible investors. both delta and u.s. airways are interested but antitrust issues could keep delta away.

the third possible candidate is an investment firm. the fresh snow at lake tahoe means tourism is down. the number of guests is down 15% from last year, but the paper did find one small upside. the people who are going are spending more money because if people are not skiing they are likely to spend more time shopping, eating and drinking. you can read about more in the san francisco business times. the time is 6:20. he was fired as head coach in the wake of the sex abuse scandal. what penn state is saying about joe paterno and the way they will treat him. >> first a bank robbery, then a high speed crash, finally a bomb scare. the hero and how he saved the day. >> right now on 280 northbound, pretty good getting up to highway 17. another update on the traffic and weather straight ahead.

the 18-year-old boy was on an inflatable raft and got stranded in the cold waters after the raft started losing air. he was treated for hypothermia. >> despite being fired he will be paid in full for the 2011 season. the university board of trustees say they are treating it as if he retired at the end of the season. he was removed as coach in november after accusations when he did not do enough when jerry sandusky was accused of sexually accusing young boys. sandusky pleaded not guilty to 52 child related charges. ed head of a local security company is a highway hero for his bravery in catching a bank robbery suspect. it began just after 11:30 yesterday morning when two men robbed a bank of america on snell avenue.

while making the getaway they crashed into a minivan on the highway. he happened to be driving by and he said his first idea was to see if anyone was hurt, but then he saw two men dressed in black running away. >> we got into a yes bling match and i threw him to the ground and placed him under citizens arrest and i made a phone call to 911. >> police cloned down the highway for five hours while they detonated what was believed to be a bomb in the car. they arrested the second robber on the baseball field. oakland is getting a new super market but not everyone is happy about it. the lucky will be converted into a discount store owned by the same par rent company. one told us they carry 28,000 different items but we told the max value food store will only carry 5,000 items when they open in march.

all the lucky workers will be transferred to other lucky stores but new hires will be paid less than the current workers. >> oakland's running festival is relocating because of occupy oakland. organizers say it will be held at lake merit due to recent problems at the plaza. last year the race drew 7,000 people and brought in $3 million for the city. races are set for march 25th. >> registration just opened. last year 55,000 people signed up for san francisco's annual 12k race. it will be on may 20th. registration starts at $57. >> san francisco police are calling it a brutal and violent attack. the two women were left with life-threatening injuries and a household tool that was used as a weapon. >> the suspected drunk driver.

their lives after someone attacked them in san francisco. here is what led up to this violent encounter. >> reporter: this is a very brutal and bloody attack that happened at the house that you see behind me here, the blue one with the light on on 20th avenue last night. police say a woman in her 70s was getting beaten by a man possibly by a hammer. she was unconscious when paramedics arrived. >> a woman showed up to deliver food and the man turned on her. she ran back to the restaurant to get help, all bloodied and beaten. this all unfold led at 9:30 last night and the suspect we're told got away. both victims are older and asian and there was a language barrier. both women are at the hospital right now with life-threatening

injuries. we're live in san tran. time is 6:32. domestic violence charges may befide against san francisco's sheriff. district attorney said he would make a decision on this by the end of the week. if the new sheriff is accused involving his wife on new year's eve. he and his wife deny that any abuse occurred. however some are now calling on him to step down. >> how can people feel safe knowing that one of the chief law enforcement officers in the city has domestic violence charges against him possibly? it is the time for him to temporarily step aside while the investigation is going on. >> now his defense lawyer said if charges are filed they are likely misdemeanor charges, not felony. >> the arraignment accused of

three sexual assaults will continue today. the 32-year-old is facing 26 felony counts for a salts. they occurred between june and december of last year. the charges include attempted murder, robbery and sexual assault. he according to police has admitted to taking part in the crimes. defense secretary leon panetta is promising a full investigation in those video accountable. coming up at 5:45, the progress they made in that case. >> he is one step closer to facing a court martial. yesterday the officer in charge of the investigation recommended that he face court martial and it goes up the chain of command now for final determination. the 24-year-old could face life in prison if convicted. >> 6:34. the 49ers getting ready since

two of the three people at the gate were actually in the car. i asked the guy, how can we trust you? you're the one that was in the car. he said this is part of the nfl practices. >> we talked to the vice president of security and he said they were working on better raised yo communications at that time. >> i would like to be able to communicate quicker with people so we made some adjustments with our radio channels and being able to communicate so you don't have so many people stepping on each other. so we got a tour of the inside of the stadium. they showed us around. one of the subjects they talked about was the lights. tomorrow's game is at 1:30 p.m. shouldn't be a problem with that, however candlestick can get a little foggy and dark so lights might come into play. it has been sold out since probably early january. you can still get tickets nfl.com has them.

this morning commute in the south continues to be very nice. some of the earlier crashes are gone and traffic is light. 6:38. here is steve. >> a very good morning. clear skies. not much in the way of a breeze compared to yesterday. the breeze will help things warm up later today. there is fog out there, but yesterday there was some on the coast. that is not happening today. clear skies in the morning today. cool to cold. upper 20s. a lot of 30s. i saw six or seven 32s around there. mild to warm, 60 to 70 later on. everything looks all right saturday as well. now i'm sure you heard about possible changes next week. if the will be colder sunday, monday. temperatures will get back into the 50s for friday and saturday. middle of next week the rain line will move south. the question is, when will it

are doing is grounding out the power to that tower because when the sun comes up they will climb 120 feet up to the tower to start repairs. they said if things go well by tonight, everything should be restored. this started around 9:20 last night when the lines came down, a small fire became because of it. people reported hearing an explosion. about an acre burned near the steven's creek trail but since then they have been working to restore power and get things back up and going out here. one acre burned, one person suffered from smoke inhalation. we don't believe those injuries are serious but, again at this point, the problem is just getting things back up and cleaned up out here. this is the la avenida trail head. crews out there right now grounding the power out and then those yous will climb up the power and try to fix things and get them back to normal.

personal information for students, faculty and administrators at city college of san francisco may now be at risk after the discovery of computer viruses. the chronicle reports the college's data security team discovered them late last year. it believes hackers from russia, china and perhaps other countries have been infecting computers at the school with the viruses since 1999. now coming up on ktvu mornings on 2 at 7:45, we'll have student reaction to the security breach. military investigators have identified 2 of the u.s. marines seen in that controversial video being seen around the world. we blurred out parts of the video. it first appeared on youtube showing four american marines urinating on the bodies of taliban fighters. investigators interviewed two of the marines yesterday, part of a base battalion sent to
