players in san francisco getting ready to announce a plan to join forces, what is happening now to beef up their influence at city hall. >> thousands of fans will be packing candlestick park in just a little more than 24 hours. the preparations underway now for tomorrow's game. mornings on 2 starts now! good morning! welcome to mornings on 2! it's friday, january 13th. two women remain in the hospital this morning after a brutal attack in san francisco's sunset district. investigators say a hammer may be the possible weapon. ktvu's tara moriarity joins us from the scene of the attack on 20th avenue. so what have you learned about this violent encounter so far, tara? >> reporter: it was pretty brutal and bloody. there was a woman working at this restaurant here off noriega street, with the orange

awning, she had to make a food delivery. she walked across the street, tom the blood trail, to someone at a house when she walked on something that she wished she hadn't. this is the house here, right now that woman is now fighting her life. a brutal and bloody attack and police say a woman in her 70s was getting beaten bip a man wielding a tool, possibly a hammer. she was unconscious, when paramedics arrived. investigators say when the delivery woman arrived, the suspect turned on her and viciously attacked her as well. that restaurant worker ran back to the restaurant to get help. this all unfolded at 9:30 last night. the suspect got away. both victims are described as older and asian and there was a language barrier, so police are still trying to piece together what happened, who this suspect is, and what the motive would be. both women are right now in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

and we've been looking around the crime scene here and we can see a trail of blood leading all the way from the front door across the street. so you can just imagine how violent this attack was. tara moriarity, ktvu channel 2 news. overnight news, there was a small earthquake this morning. probably woke some people up in the south bay. the geological survey say the quake eight the 12:50, nine miles north on morgan hill. a slightly smaller quake hit that same area about 12 hours earlier. so far, there's no word of any damage or injuries. san jose police department is telling us new details about an overnight stabbing near a bar. it happened before 1 a.m. knew ther cape bar in foxworthy avenue. two men were fighting inside the bar. they ended up at a nearby apartment complex. that's when police say a 33- year-old man from campbell

stabbed a 26-year-old man from san jose in the neck. the victim is expected to survive. police did arrest the suspect. it's 7:03. contra costa county sheriff's deputies arrested two people in discovery bay suspected of staging an armed robbery at a safeway gas station. 35-year-old dorian swigger and 21-year-old christopher nelson both of discovery bay are suspected of planning together to carry out the crime shortly before 10 p.m. sunday at a safeway gas station on highway 4. the sheriff's office says twigger put on a black ski mask and entered the store with a handgun. they say nelson, who was working at the gas station, pretended to be a victim and emptied the cash register. two men are under arrest after a high-speed chase that came to an end on an oakland freeway onramp. the chp says it started when police tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver in castro valley. the driver refused to stop,

getting on and off the freeway, and finally ended up in oakland. that's when police say he tried to get back on interstate 880, then tried to make a u-turn on the onramp. the chp cruiser was able to stop the driver by nudging his car. police had to use a taser on the driver. he and a passenger were arrested. tech firms are reportedly uniting to flex their power with san francisco politicians. those businesses clung zynga and twitter are behind the move to create the san francisco citizens initiative for technology and innovation. one of the backers said the goal is to make san francisco the innovation capital of the world, and not influence elections. some supervisors are worried this could end up having too much power in sway at city hall. a 10-year legal battle over some trees in north oakland has finally ended. the dispute was between two homeowners and coming up for you at 7:19, we'll tell you

what they didn't see eye to eye on and why the issue took so long to settle. the san francisco 49ers host the new orleans saints tomorrow to find out who plays for the nfc championship. kraig debro is live at candlestick park, where i imagine there's heightened security there, kraig. >> reporter: good morning. there's highlightened security here at this entrance to the park closest to 101. there's a kiosk, there's a park ranger down there, we got here about an hour ago, and no park ranger, but you see the gentlemen there in the yellow jackets and orange, they've been checking cars as they go into the entrance here. any cars. it's even cars that they were -- the man on the right came in a car, and after passed through the gate he checked the car, his own car. this is video from a 30 minutes ago, when we got here. we started videotaping what they were doing here. we're trying to find out from the staff here why security seems to be so heightened out

area so plan accordingly. you might want to use 280 to get up and down the peninsula and avoid 101. right now it looks fine to the airport and downtown. westbound bay bridge, light delay at toll plaza. no major problems on the bridge. this morning's commute in contra costa county has been slow. we've had a couple fender- benders on north and southbound 680, also at 24. but it's not causing a big delay. some slight delays there. and on 80 westbound, looks good driving down to the richmond area. if you're driving in hayward, southbound traffic looks good to fremont. a very happy friday morning! clear and cold out there. 20s, 30s and 40s. not as much as a breeze. yesterday had good, gusts over 40 miles per hour. there's still a component of answer easterly breeze so it will be warm today. we start off 26 to 46 on the temperatures. and then by noon, 50 to 60. lots of sunshine, hazy sunshine here and we'll continue that this afternoon. 60 to 70. probably near 70 for some, maybe just a little cooler due

to decrease in the breeze. fog yesterday near the coast, that's pulled off as well due to the easterly component. lot of moisture here. will it make it here? not until maybe middle of next week and that would be north of us. i think our best bet continues to be the end of next week, today and tomorrow cold mornings, sunny and mild to warm conditions. today warmer and tomorrow still okay. but just a little cooler. next week the rain line will move south. can we get it far enough south for the bay area? mend seenee north looks good but next friday, saturday looks even better when we'll have to wait to get rain into here and by that i mean from san francisco, oakland south. everywhere else they need the rain. with very little snow in the mountains, everybody is screaming for rain. so let's hope it happens. cold this morning, mainly north bay east bay, upper 20s. lot of 30s.

good morning. it's beautiful out there. temperatures cold though, 20s, 30s, 40s, lot of mid to upper 60s, mild and warm conditions. we're now hearing the police in thailand are questioning a lebanese man with suspected links to hezbollah militants. the news of the man's detention came just hours after the u.s. embassy sent an emergency message to american citizens warning of a terrorist attack on tourist areas in bangkok. thai authorities are confident the situation is under control. and there's word out of mexico of a decrease in

violence in the city of juarez across the border from el paso, texas. for years it's been mexico's murder capital, as drug cartels battle for territory. last year, there were more than 1900 violent deaths in the city. but that's down 40% from 2010. the federal government sent in thousands of troops and people who live in juarez say they're feeling safer. the bad news, it appears the drug violence has moved on other parts of mexico. a new report about new transcripts show federal reserve chairman ben bernanke didn't appear to be worried about the housing crisis back in 2006. the transcripts revealed discussions during bernanke's first meeting as the fed chairman. at the time housing prices were just starting to fall. but bernanke reportedly said he thought the u.s. economy could still recover. he also reportedly said he didn't believe the fall in housing prices would hurt the

growth in the u.s. economy. new this morning, president obama want to take his presidential powers to a new level. ktvu's allison burns reports he'll be asking congress for permission to shrink the federal government. allison. >> reporter: dave, president obama will be speaking about it next hour, outlining his plans for shrinking the federal government. it gives new reorganizing powers to the president. merges six commerce and trade agencies that have overlapping programs, and gives congress an up or down vote on the president's merger proposal. president obama will say this morning his goal it to improve the giant bureaucracy of government. the plan means one to 2,000 government jobs would be cut, but the administration says it will save about $3 billion over 10 years. of course, some of the president's republican rivals have proposed eliminating entire government agencies, so this promises to be a big

campaign issue, and the president is also expected to say more about it during his state of the union address in two weeks. reporting live, allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. jury selection continues today in the trial of the suspected gang member accused of killing a san francisco man and his two sons. edwin wrapoes is charged with three counts of murder. in 2008, police say he shot tony bologna and his two sons while sitting in their car. prosecutors say ramos thought one of the sons was a rival gang member. ramos pled not guilty. right now joran van der sloot is awaiting his sentence for the murder of a peruvian woman. take you live now inside the courtroom. van der sloot has just left the room, but he could be sentenced for up to 30 years. the defense asked for five years early this week. he pled guilty to all charges, confessing he killed 21-year- old stephanie flores in a fit

of rage after she discovered he was linked to the 2005 disappearance of american teenager natalee holloway. these are pictures from earlier in the courtroom. holloway's body has never been found, and yesterday a judge declared her legally dead. we will bring you van der sloot's sentence in peru as soon as it comes down. from north korea, reports that people who did not take part in last month's public mourning for the late dictator kim jong il, they're reportedly being punished. a south korean news agent sits says people are getting six- month labor sentences in labor camps. those who did participate but did not cry real tears, they're reportedly sent to reeducation camps. north korea for their part calls the report a lie and part of a smear campaign. this morning, russia's space agency is adjusting its time line on when a failed space probe could fall to earth. now it says the 14 1/2 ton

spacecraft could fall to earth sunday or monday, to be exact location. that's not known. the probe left earth on november 8th. it was supposed to go to mars but it never made it out of earth's orbit. this is one of heaviest pieces of space junk to fall back to earth. most of it is toxic fuel. a group that wants to repeal a sales tax for the sonoma project is recruiting paid signature collectors. in 2008 voters in marin and sonoma counties approved a quarter cent sales tax to fund the rail line. but the group says costs are skyrocketing out of control and they want the tax overturned. the group says it will pay a dollar for each valid signature. a proposal to charge for premium parking at the larkspur ferry terminal is revised to include more alternatives. the golden gate bridge district met yesterday to discuss a pilot program. it would designate a number of

premium parking spaces for a 65- dollar monthly fee. the marin independent journal reports the district also talked about charging a $2 fee for all spaces. a public hearing on fare increases has been set for march 22nd. almost 10 year legal battle over some trees in the oakland hills has finally ended. the dispute was between two homeowners, the bishop and haines families, who lived on wilton drive. the issue were some trees that blocked the bishops view of the bay. the case is already gone through two trials, and the city council meeting. just recently a state appeals court ordered the haines to cut down the trees and pay the bishops $200,000 legal fees. that ruling became final earlier this week when the state supreme court rejected an appeal by the haines. senator dianne feinstein is stepping into the debate about whether there should be an oyster farm at the point reyes

see shore. the drakes bay oyster company permit for the farm is about to expire in november. it hasn't been renewed yet because of environmental concerns. senator feinstein says the report mischaracterized previous reviews. he's been a longtime supporter of that oyster company. happening now in mountainview, smoldering brush near downed power lines has prompted fire crews to hid back out to the scene. we want to show you some live pictures right now where you can see some smoke coming up from some debris there. this is happening along la avenida higher in mountainview campus. some power lines came down around 9:20, last night. and that sparked a small brushfire. but as you can see in these live pictures, it's started to smolder again just a short time ago, this can happen. this is why fire crews stay on or near the scene for a fire

despite being fired as penn state's head football coach, joe paterno will be paid in full for the 2011 season. the university board of trustees say they're treating it as if paterno retired at the

some higher elevations and over the oakland hills, 20 to 30 miles per hour at the surface not as bad but that's still a little offshore breeze 20s and 30s, low 30s on the peninsula, also east bay and upper 20s. and north bay. so that's starts us out cold again. high pressure will hold its ground for two more days, then a cold system will move into the north on sunday. that will drop our types back into the 50s, giving us partly to mostly cloudy conditions and windy and cool next week. sunny, hazy, cold morning, windy in the hills. higher elevations not so pad at the surface but offshore breeze which means it's going from east to west. 60s though, mid to upper, maybe a few 70 degrees, especially towards oakland. they had 70 yesterday. sunshine mild to warm tomorrow, not as warm as today but still mild to warm. changes occur on sunday with your weekend always in view. it will be cooler sunday and monday. >> thank you, steve. a woman is under arrest for biting two children.

it's 7:30. mountain view firefighters are putting out hot spots on a small brushfire originally sparked by downed power lights last night. this is along la avenida near microsoft campus. claudine wong is live at the scene as many it still smoldering there? >> reporter: it is. we're been smelling it, a little of it. and when the sun came up you could see it in that direction and still see white smoke over there. firefighters are there right now just putting more water on it. you can still see the foam from yesterday's firefight as they tried to put out all that brush that was caught on fire. when the downed lines came down. last night they first responded, some people reported hearing sounds of explosion, there were multiple calls to 911. the grass was on fire.

power was out to almost 400 people. then power was restored. the fire was out p pg&e has been looking for a cause ever since. we just spoke to the spokesperson who says they're hoping this is wrapped up by 5 p.m. tonight. >> when you talk about transmission lines, there's definitely high voltage so it will take a lot of safety procedures and a lot of work to make sure our equipment is restored and safe. >> any idea why this happened? >> we don't. the cause of the outage still under investigation and we hope to have more information as the day moves forward. >> back out here live, you can see one of the towers in question on the left side of tower. it's missing lines from all three juncture points. what they've been doing this morning is grounding out the lines so it was safe for their crews to work on it. there are four towers affected by this, so it's taking a little time. and then over the last few minutes as they made room for

the firetruck to get in here, all the the crews moved out of the way. but if we pan down and can look behind us, we talked about how this is close to the microsoft campus. i want to show you the pg&e crews that are out here parked in the microsoft lot. they've been out here all morning, just growing in numbers. but again in and out of here but there are four towers affected. what they told me they want to do is climb that tower which is 120 feet. get things fixed. but first, they of course have to get the smoldering fire out but it's on that brush we can still see fire crews putting water down on there. so until that is taken care of, this can't get underway. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. domestic violence charges could possibly be filed today against san francisco's new sheriff. ross mirkarimi. the district attorney said he would decide by the end of this week. the new sheriff is accused of a domestic violence incident involving his wife on new year's eve. both mirkarimi and his wife

deny it. still, some critics say mirkarimi should step down. >> it's like the fox guarding the henhouse. and how can people feel safe? and the sheriff should not be putting his political career over the safety of domestic violence survivors and their children in the city. >> mirkarimi's defense attorney says if charges are filed today, there's likely to be misdemeanor charges, not felony. two bay area teachers are due to be arraigned today on sex charges in two separate cases. at 11:00 this morning, teacher marie johnson is due in a courtroom, the pleasanton teacher accused of having a six- month sexual relationship with a male student who was 14 years old at the time. she teaches at granada high school. investigators say the relationship started with the game words with friends, then developed further through text messages and facebook. then at noon today, craig chandler, a teacher at ob whaley elementary, will be in court in san jose.

he is expected of 24 counts of child molestation. police are not telling us specifics of the allegations but say one student was assaulted on campus last fall. chandler was arrested tuesday, held in jail ever since. it's 7:34. police released a sketch of two men suspected of killing an oakland father in front of his son this past summer. the gunman on the left is described as 17 to 20 years old with the dark complection, and dreadlocks. his accomplice is the same age and has short hair. police say they killed 39-year- old jose esparza at the el pueblo market on august twayth, right in front of his-year-old son. the arraignment will continue today for the man accused of three sexual assaults in san francisco's mission district. 32-year-old frederick dozier is facing 26 felony charges for the assaults which occurred between june and december of last year. the charges include attempted

murder, robbery, and sexual assault. police say dozier admitted to taking part in the crimes. a horrifying story from nevada city about a landscaper killed in a woodchipper accident. details are pretty hard to talk about. a tow truck hauled away that woodchipper yesterday after this incident. it happened when a four-man crew was clearing a private property, somehow one of the men became trapped in that massive machine. >> a crew all working in different spots, somebody heard him screaming, and saw it and called fire and us and everybody else. >> the victim identified as 50- year-old martin lara. investigators say a cord, rope, maybe even his clothing may have tangled him in the machine. there will be an autopsy performed. there are also new teams about the serial murder case against 78-year-old joseph naso. the retired photographer is accused of killing four women

between 1977 and 1994. a preliminary hearing for naso is underway now in marin county. the independent journal reports during yesterday's testimony, a nevada state investigator talked about a diary found in his home in reno. in the diary, the investigators says naso writes about raping women. but naso told the court that raping in his culture means making out. or scoring. naso has pleaded not guilty. today is the last day the residents of ukiah can meet downtown at the post office. the historic post office is being closed because of postal service budget cuts. she'll put a chain on the door when it's closing time. since i love this part, keys to the building were lost a long time ago. they will still have a post office, but it's an annex on the outskirts every town. oakland is getting the a new supermarket but not everyone is happy about it. the lucky's on macarthur boulevard will be on verted in

eye discount store owned by the same company. one worker told us this lucky store now carries about 28,000 different items, but we're told the max value food store will carry just 5,000 items, when it opens in march. >> you just get the quality that you can from lucky. >> i'm really disappointed. this is our neighborhood store. >> the company president released a written statement saying -- new hires for the discount store will be paid less than current workers at that location. mountain view police arrested a woman in a strange incident yesterday because she allegedly bit two small children at a bookstore. police say it happened inside the book buyers store on castro street, where the kids were shopping with their mother. paramedics did treat the children at the store.

and police arrested 46-year-old polly on two felony child abuse charges. pg&e could be able to huge fine for the san bruno pipeline disaster that killed eight people and destroyed almost 40 homes. that's after regulators issued a report yesterday saying violations by pg&e led to the deadly explosion in 2010. the report also says pg&e collected millions of dollars from ratepayers for safety improvements, but the money was not used on safety projects. illegal streetcar racing is being blamed for an accident involving some livermore high school students. it happened on tuesday on patterson road near the lawrence livermore lab. a black ford mustang and red infinity were racing when both drivers lost control. the infinity hit a tree and rolled over, and the mustang hit a fire hydrant. one of the drivers and a passenger suffered non-life- threatening injuries.

police say the teens are lucky because their injuries could have been much worse. oakland's running festival is relocating because of the occupy protests. organizers say the event will be held at lake merritt, instead of downtown oakland this year, because of the recent problems and protestors with the occupiers. last year the race drew about 7,000 people, and brought in about $3 million for the city. the race is set for march 25th. registration just opened for the 101st running of the breakaries. last year 55,000 people signed up for san francisco's annual 12k race. beta breakers will be held on may 20th this year. registration begins at $57. 20 minutes before 8:00. caltrain fares could be going up, but only for people who pay with cash. the agency is looking at a 25- cent increase for each of its

dramatic rescue last night, a teenager in new york city's east river, helicopter crew helped out. you can see them there. authorities say this 18-year- old was on an inflatable raft, then got stranded in the frigid waters after the raft started losing air. he was later treated for hypothermia. apple blames angry crowds outside a beijing store for delaying the release of the iphone 4s in china today. hundreds of people spent the night in freezing weather waiting for the store to open. when it didn't open on time, people in the crowd started throwing eggs at the windows. no one was hurt but apple says it was concerned about the safety of its workers and customers, and it's not saying when it could start sales of its iphone at apple stores in china. battery charges for cell phones, computers and other electronic devices are about to become more energy-efficient. the california energy

good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. it is friday, january 13th. a brutal attack on two women in san francisco's sunset district left the women with life- threatening injuries. tara is at the crime scene on 20th avenue, and you have new details, tara. >> reporter: the police are saying had was a home invasion, one that was interrupted by a food delivery person who then became the target of the suspect herself. you can actually see a trail of blood all the way from the doorknob at the top of the stairs there, down these steps, and down the sidewalk. police say at 9:20 last night, the suspect came to rob the

house off 20th and noriega. they believe because he rifled through drawers, investigators say the man described as asian struck the 76-year-old woman with something possibly a hammer, we're not sure at this point, while he was beating her, then another woman, a 56- year-old, came house to deliver food. she was also attacked by was able to run away, back to the restaurant for help. and that is the trail of blood. the older victim was unconscious when paramedics arrived. both women are still at the hospital, with life-threatening injuries. that was an update within the past half hour. now again, the suspect is described as an asian family, he took off in a light colored sedan and that's all police have to go on right now. so if you have seen or heard anything in this area, last night at that time or anything that might be helpful to police, contact their tip line. 8:00. san jose police department is

revealing new details about an overnight stabbing near a bar. it happened just before 1 a.m. near the escape bar on south bascom and fox worthy. two men were fighting inside the bar and ended up at a nearby apartment complex. that's when san jose police say a 33-year-old man from campbell stabbed a 26-year-old man from san jose in the neck. the 26-year-old is expected to be okay, and police did arrest the suspect. two men have been arrested after an early morning high- speed chase that ended on a freeway onramp in oakland. the chp says it started when police tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver in castro valley. the driver refused to stop. getting on and off the freeway, finally ending up in oakland. police say he tried to get back on to interstate 880, and then tried to make a u-turn on the onramp. a chp patrol car was able to stop the driver biphenyling his

car. police actually used a taser on the driver. both he and the passenger were arrested. contra costa county sheriff's deputies arrested two people in discovery bay suspected of staging an armed robbery of a safeway gas station. 35-year-old dorian swagert and 21-year-old christopher nelson both of discovery bay are suspected of planning together to carry out the crime just before 10 p.m. sunday, at a safeway gas station on highway 4. sheriff's office says swagert put on a black ski mask and went into the store but the gas station with a gun. nelson who was working at the gas station pretended to be a victim and according to police emptied out the cash register. tech firms are uniting the flex their power with san francisco politicians. the chronicle reports the businesses including zynga and twitter are behind a move to create the san francisco citizens initiative for technology and innovation. one of the backers said the

goal is to make san francisco the innovation capital of the world and not influence elections. some supervisors are worried it could end up having too much sway at city hall. there was a small earthquake in the south bay and it probably woke so many people up. theis survey says the quake hit about 12:50, about nine miles north of morgan hill. it was a 2.0 magnitude. a smaller quake struck the same area 12 hours earlier no reports of damage. santa clara county supervisors decided not to compete for state money to rehabilitate the county's jails. right now the county has more than a thousand empty jail bins. supervisors think that is enough. even with the influx of new prisoners, that will soon be transferred from state prisons to relieve overcrowding there. the board decided not to seek the possible $100 million in grant money, because of it

still waiting to learn the sentence for joran van der sloot, who has confessed to killing a woman in peru. we want to take you live once again inside the courtroom in lima. that's a live picture of joran van der sloot there, wearing green t-shirt with his eyes closed. we do understand the court had convened to sentence him for the 2010 murder of a young woman he met at a lima casino that would be 21-year-old stephany flores. he did confess to killing her and her death happened five years to the day of the disappearance of american teenager natalee holloway. van der sloot remains the main suspect in that case, but has never been charge. holloway's body has never been found, but yesterday a judge legally declared natalee holloway dead at the request of her family. once we know the results of the sentence for joran van der sloot, we will bring it to you. i thought i heard the word guilty but we'll go back and check on the situation with with joran van der sloot

shortly. we are now hearing the obama administration using a secret channel of communication warned iran supreme leader that closing the strait of hormuz would provoke an american response. the u.s. has been increasing its military presence in the persian gulf ever since iran threaten to close the strait, if the u.s. continued to push for sanctions on iran. top u.s. military leaders say the iranian navy does have the capability of closing the strait, but they say the u.s. has the military capacity to reopen it. sarah ferguson's once glamorous life too take a turn to a jail cell. yesterday prosecutors there filed charges accusing the duchess of york of violating the privacy of children by secretly filming an orphanage in turkey. she made an undercover trip to turkey in 2008, for british tv program. the images appeared to show children tied to beds.

welcome back. a mountain view they're still out there fixing downed power lines near the microsoft campus. the lines sparked a small brushfire last night that started smoking again just a while ago this morning. ktvu's claudine wong has been there all morning and is back now with the very latest. >> reporter: dave, this process is not quick. we know where the problem s it's that tower, four different towers but that tower in particular. but getting this all fixed isn't happening fast. first crews are waiting for daylight. then they had to wait for fire crews to put out smoldering brush. time frame is still future repairs by 5 p.m. today. 45 minutes ago, fire crews were out here finishing up putting extra water on brushes started smoldering this morning. that fire spark for the first time last night, about 9:20 when the lines came down. some reported hearing explosion when that happened. but pg&e can't confirm that. fire crews had the fire out a short time later one man treated for smoke inhalation.

and power was restored by about midnight. clean-up and repairs will take longer. >> when you talk about transmission lines there's definitely high voltage so it will take a lot of assessment, safety procedures and a lot of work to make sure that our equipment is restored and safe. >> any idea why this happened? >> we don't. the cause of the outage still under investigation, and we hope to have more information as the day moves forward. >> pg&e crews have been out here all night and morning. the area has been shut down but again the heavy work still needs to get done. four towers affected by this, crews this morning working to ground the power so they could climb the 120 movie foot hower to do repairs later today. a are the of work still to be done. if we come back out here, show you this tower one more time. we look at left side of the tower, you can see it's missing the lines from that side. and some key pieces of equipment. if we pan down here to the tree, you can see it where the equipment sits.

one of those pieces behind the tree just laying on the ground and the wires really tangled up into that tree. i just asked a pg&e crewmember when they're going to start climbing the tower he said that will take awhile. they don't know the cause. hoping to have this done, however, by nightfall. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. we're following a develop story coming in now from north carolina. there has just been a workplace shooting this morning, at least three people are dead, two others injured. it happened at a lumber company this morning in montgomery county. that's right near the city of star. officials also say the gunman shot himself. what his condition is, that's not clear right now. some of the witnesses at that lumber company say the gunman is a disgruntled employee. but again a workplace shoot that has just happened in north carolina. we'll bring you more details as they're available. domestic violence charges could be filed today against san francisco sheriff ross

mirkarimi. district attorney george gascon said he would make a decision by the end of the next week. or the end of this week. the sheriff is accused of a domestic violence incident involving his wife on new year's eve. mirkarimi and his wife deny the abuse but some people are calling on mir to step down. >> how can people feel safer knowing one of chief law enforcement officers has domestic violence charges pending against him? and so yes, i think it's absolutely the time for him to temporarily step aside, while the investigation is going on. >> mirkarimi's defense attorneys says if charges are filed today, they're likely to be misdemeanor charges, not felonies. time is 8:34. two bay area teachers are due to be arraigned today on sex charges in two separate cases. this morning marie johnson is due in a courtroom and, she's the teacher from pleasanton

accused of having a six-month sexual relationship with a male student who was 14 years old at the time. she teaches at granada high school. investigators say the relationship began with the game words with friends, then developed further through text messaging and facebook. then at noon today, craig chandler, a teacher at ob whaley elementary school, will be in court in san jose. he is suspected of 24 counts of child molestation. the police are not giving us specifics of the allegations, but they say one student was assaulted on campus last fall. chandler was arrested tuesday. he has been in jail ever since. time is:35 of police released a sketch of two men suspected of killing an oakland father right in front of his son. now the gunman you'll see in the picture on the left described as about between 17 and 20 years old. the dark complection and has dreadlocks.

that's the sketch. his accomplice on the right is about the same age, has short hair. police say they killed 39-year- old jose esparza at the el pueblo market in east oakland on august 28th, right in front of his six-year-old son. in other news a woodchipper is blamed for a horrifying death of a landscaper in nevada city. a tow truck hauled away the woodchipper yesterday. there it is there, after this incident. it happened when a four-man crew was out clearing a private property. somehow one every men became caught in that machine. >> a crew and all working in different spots. somebody heard him screaming, saw it and called fire and us and everybody else. >> the victim was identified as 50-year-old martin lara. investigators say a cord or maybe his clothing caused him to get tangled up in the woodchipper. there will be a coroner's

autopsy. pg&e could be hit with a huge fine for the san bruno pipeline explosion that killed 8 people and destroyed almost 40 homes. this after regulators issued a report yesterday saying the violations by pg&e led to the deadly blast in 2010. the report also said pg&e collected millions of dollars from ratepayers for safety improvements, but the money was not used on safety projects. illegal streetcar racing is being blamed for an accident involving some livermore high school students. it happened on tuesday on patterson pass road near the lawrence livermore lab. witnesses tell police a black ford mustang and a red infiniti were racing when both drivers lost control. the infiniti hit a tree and rolled over and the mustang hit a fire hydrant. one of the drivers and a passenger suffered non-life- threatening injuries. police say the teens are lucky because their injuries could have been much worse.

oakland's running festival is relocating now because of the occupy protests. organizers say the event will be held at lake merritt, instead of downtown oakland this year, because of recent problems with the occupy protests at frank ogawa plaza. last year the race drew about 7,000 people, brought in about $3 million for the city of oakland. it is now set for march 25th. also, registration just opened for the continue1st running of the beta breakers race. last year 55,000 people signed up four san francisco's annual 12k race. beta breakers will be on may 20 the this year. the registration cost will start at $57. time is 8:38. caltrain fares may be going up. but only for people who pay cash. caltrain is looking at a 25- cent increase for each of its zones. clipper card users, you won't be affected. only the customers who pay with

his firing caused alumni. some told penn state's president they might withhold donations until they get answers from university trustees about how they handled the scandal. personal information at city college of san francisco for students, faculty and administrators may now be at risk because of computer viruses. the chronicle reports the colleges data security team found the viruses late last year at cloud hall. but it now appears those viruses have been infiltrating the college's electronic systems since 1999. the school's chief technology officers say it looks like personal information was sent to sites in russia, china, and at least eight other country, including iran. the city of oakland is getting a new supermarket, but not everyone is happy about it. the lucky's on macarthur boulevard already converted in eye discount store owned by the same parent company.

a big tree wednesday night. witnesses say the pilot did climb out of this, but before he called police he was spotted taking a nap in a barn nearby. the pilot was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. and yes, the police are investigating. financial analysts from san jose have come forward and claimed a $208 million lottery jackpot. he's 35-year-old daniel p brought the winning mega- millions ticket in new york last month. that's when he was visiting relatives in long island over christmas holiday. he appeared with new york state lottery officials at the supermarket where that lucky ticket was purchased. he is opting for the jackpot's lump sum option, worth $153.3 million before tax. right now we're still waiting to learn the sentence for joran van der sloot, who is confessed to killing a woman in peru. here's a live picture inside the courtroom in lima. and you see van der sloot there with his head in his hands.
