degrees warmer. patchy dense fog around santa rosa. it will take a little while for it to burn off. in through the afternoon 50s at best. it's definitely going to be a different day than what we saw on sat. and then into the extended forecast looks like rain still on tap for midweek wednesday. we have a few storms that are lined up and ready to bring us rain. we'll show you those models coming up in a little bit. back to you. in the last two hours we have learned that two firefighters have been injured and seven people displaced after an overnight fire. it started at 2:30 this morning in the city's richmond district. it took two hours to contain. allie rasmus is live there with some of the challenges that firefighters face this morning. allie. >> reporter: right now fire investigators are going through the home where the fire happened trying to pinpoint where it started and exactly how it started. the fire itself was contained

to this building where it happened. some of the smoke damage around the windows and downstairs in that burnt up garage. but there is structural damage to the homes on either side of this building. that is because firefighters had to cut open the walls on the third floor and fight the fire from the neighbors homes on either side. this is what fire fighterings were up against. this is what it looked like after the fire started. when fire fightest arrived there were flames and also the same time flames coming from the back windows. the battalion chief says what is suspicious about this fire says it spread through the entire building so quickly. it has two separate apartment units and a metal gate that separates the second and third floor. >> we had difficulty accessing the third floor through the center stairwell. there was a security gate with a metal bar welded over the gap in the gate. so it was virtually impossible

for us to force that gate. >> reporter: so that is why firefighters had to break open the walls and the roof to fight the fire that way. the people that live on the apartments on either side of this burning building can't go back inside their homes. the red cross was out here helping them. officials say there is one person one tenant that lives in one of the apartments on the second floor but neighbors say that person or woman was seen running from the area and no one has been able to find her our talk to her since then. investigators want to get ahold of that tent than to see somewhat happened. live in san francisco allie rasmus. san francisco 49ers are going somewhere they have not been since 1997. the nfc championship game. that is after a thrilling finish against the saints out at the stick. the niners jumped in front

early with alex smith and vernon davis for a 49-yard touchdown. san francisco led 17-14 at halftime. the saints bounce back and take a one point lead with four minutes left to go in the game. alex smith answers right back. he tucks the ball away. 28 yards later he has six with a two point conversion not good. here come the saints yet again. 66-yard touchdown. saints convert the version they are up three. less than two minutes left on the clock. smith and davis hook up again for a 47-yard gain. there is the touchdown right after that to vernon davis a 14- yard grab. niners win the game 36-32. >> and ktvu cameras were at the pub when fans went crazy. the bar right across the street from the niners former home was

counterfeit tickets and police say numerous people were ejected from the stadium. in other news oakland police are looking for a sexual predator who they say is only 14 years old. the latest attack happened thursdays night at 9:15 in the 600 block of 11th street. the first attack was six days earlier. in both cases 28-year-old women walking alone were approached by a teenager that acted like he had a gun. took their wallet and purse and sexually assaulted them according to police. we went to the neighborhood yesterday and found one woman that says she makes a point of walking with her dog. >> he is like my bodyguard. bodyguard and home security. other than that i don't go outside after dark no. >> overnight we learned the suspects name is brian blast per. police say he is considered

armed and dangerous. san francisco police are investigating a stabbing. a 30-year-old man ran into a building on hide street just before 7:30 last night. the man told people in the building that he had been shot but police later determined he had actually been stabbed. it's not clear why the man was stabbed or where exactly it happened. he was transported to the hospital and expected to survive. oakland police arrested two people after another late night occupy protest. officers in riot gear lined up last night in downtown oakland. about 125 people gather near frank ogawa plaza before taking part in the march through the city streets. this is the second street in the row they have gathered for a march in oakland. unlike last week this did not lead to any vandalism. police did make two arrests after protestors tried to block a street with a dumpster. occupy protestors in san

francisco are planning on shutting down the financial district this friday after a day long mass demonstration. this comes after a weekend roof protest in the mission district. >> hey hey. >> four men and two women climbed the roof of the wells fargo bank yesterday to protest evictions, foreclosures, and increasing rental prices. san francisco police responded. they forced the police to leave. >> what we are seeing right now despite the economic downturn rent is going up. people are still getting foreclosed on. >> police took the six protestors into custody for trespassing but they have since been released. good morning, to you. a live look from bay point where we have partly cloudy skies. the big change in our weather pattern already under way. we are seeing it in many ways

around the bay area this morning. starting in the north bay where we have patchy fog there. our moisture is up. our relative humidity. because we have an on shore flow that has returned to the area. delta breeze in areas like fairfield. the marine layer back inland and temperatures up a few degrees over parts of the bay area. the winds still generally light. looks like the breeze blowing 15-20 miles an hour through fairfield. brisk outside your door this morning. 37 in napa. we watched area arounds the north bay. temperatures improving this morning over yesterday. 41 in concord. 33 in livermore. off to the south bay san jose 41 degrees. wide spread 40s around san francisco as well as oakland. numbers are up from yesterday. anywhere from 5-10 degrees and 15 in the most extreme cases.

good morning, to you. san jose holding on to 41 degrees. starting out with partly to mostly gray skies. help has finally arrived for the tiny alaskan town short on fuel. a russian tanker is just offshore from the city of gnome. the arrival comes after the coast card cut a path through hundreds of miles of ice ice just so the tanker could get

its fuel. we are learning this morning that a third survivor has been found inside a cruise ship. the crew member was rescued via helicopter today. a south korean -- the newlyweds were being seen helped off a coast guard vessel into an ambulance. 17 people remain unaccounted for. three people have been confirmed dead. among those managed to get off the board safely includes a group of friends from kentucky. >> reporter: a sinking ship full of thousands of passengers scrambling for safety. it sounds like titanic. >> where we are standing is under water. >> reporter: the ship was carrying more than 4200 passengers when it struck rocks off the coast of italy.

>> it's unimaginable. >> reporter: on board was joyce's daughter. she first heard from her daughter before she saw the news on tv. >> she said mama i want to call and let you know i'm safe. we're all safe. we're on land. she said our crews ship has hit something. wrecked and it was sinking. >> reporter: jordan was with her boyfriend nick hope also a local resident and several friends. >> they were at dinner and said mom all of a sudden things went sideways. >> reporter: there are reports people were jumping from the ship and into the water. helicopters rescued others. jordan and her friends were taken by lifeboats to nearby island. >> one of the boats full of 200 people went down. and fell. and swung and everybody is screaming. >> you think this. but you don't think it will happen but it did. >> reporter: while the u.s. embassy has contacted the group

of friends and is helping them, there isn't much they will be arriving home with. they did manage to leave the sinking ship with cash and credit cards. they say in the end none of that matters. >> the material things don't matter at all. just get them home and get them home safe. >> that was tamara evans reporting. two women from washington state are among the survivors. as for the captain of the cruise ship he's under investigation for manslaughter and for leaving the ship. highway patrol says two pickup trucks collided on highway 85 yesterday afternoon. witnesses say both trucks rolled several times and officers say a passenger in one of the trucks who was not wearing a seat belt was ejected and died at the scene. a passenger in the second pickup was transported to the hospital with life threatens injuries -- with life threatening injuries. james capoot will be

honored during a brunch. capoot was shot and killed while chasing a bank robbery suspect in november. the brunch will begin at 8:00 this morning and end at 1:00 this afternoon. time is 7:18. police in missouri are questioning two persons of interest after shooting outside of a busy shopping mall. it happened at 4:30 outside of independence center mall in kansas city. four people got in an argument which escalated in a shooting. two people were shot and injured. the gunfire sent shoppers running for safety. >> i have never been so scared in my life. i'm still 20 minutes ago i'm still shaking. >> you are wound up. i'm running toward the gunman and she is screaming at me saying what is he doing? >> the mall was locked down after the shooting and closed early. the victims are expected to survive. a man suspected of cutting

numerous women in stores in virginia has been arrested in peru. johnny tells slashing 13 women on their back sides last year as they shopped. he used a box cutter or something similar. none of the women were seriously hurt. he was arrested last friday in a shopping mall in lee ma. southern california man is scheduled to appear in court on tuesday after police said he tried to poison his wife's bowl of cereal. the woman started eating rice crispies when she noticed a horrible taste in her mouth. >> she said something is in it. i went and picked it up. when i saw what was in the cup i could smell it. >> the woman went to the hospital with her husband by her side. and that is where police say they grew suspicious. the husband suddenly ran off. officers found him a few miles away down at a 711 store and

arrested him. they believe the husband put some time of all purpose cleaner inside that bowl of cereal. the company linked to a listeria outbreak say caused of ignoring the fda advice. they conducted a safety audit right before the outbreak and gave the farm near perfect marks despite finding problems. the september outbreak killed 30 people. the cdc says it was the deadlyist outbreak of food bourn illness. remembering civil rights hero. in honor of martin luther king junior. a new eye on the sky. a live look there at the golden gate. not dealing with any patchy fog there. we do have it around parts of the north bay. we have your numbers coming up.

good morning, and welcome back. the time is 7:23. the freedom train will make its journey tomorrow. charter cal train will leave at 9:30 tomorrow morning. it will stop in sunnyvale, palo alto and san mateo before arriving in san francisco around 11:00. the freedom train ride commemorates dr. martin luther king marchs in alabama in 1965. tomorrow will be a day on not a day off for hundreds of bay area volunteers. in san francisco volunteers will be in the golden gate national parks cleaning up and planting trees. in richmond volunteers will repair homes at the 800 block of sixth street. camera five caught me off guard there. sometimes it has a mind of its

own. weather sometimes you never know what will happen with it. let's check with rosemary. >> a live welcome at the bay area. we have gray skies overhead. the on shore flow is back and so is the low clouds and a little bit of fog on our moisture level is up. air quality is moving. no spare the air day to worry about. but we will have the winds. anywhere from 10-20 miles an hour. forecasted highs most of us sitting in the 50s. perhaps a low 60 out there. we are looking at a huge plunge in our afternoon temperatures and a soaking schedule for the second half of the week. picking it up around wednesday afternoon. over the north bay we have rain. it will take a little while before it sinks south. it's thursday. the rain didn't go away. i will take you into friday and notice the rain doesn't go away. looks like several cycles into saturday morning. starting on wednesday the possibility of rain over the

north bay begins to sink south. on and off rain all the way through the first half of the weekend. here's your extended forecast as you get out the door today. bring along the jacket it will be cool and breezy. monday will be just as cool. our first shot at rain comes on wednesday. back to you. we are getting a sneak peek at what will one day be a new eye on the sky. researchers at the university of arizona in tucson are building the new giant telescope. the new telescope will be bigger than any other in the world and right now researchers are busy making the seven giant mirrors needed for that project. each mirror takes about a year to complete. and requires melting glass at temperatures hotter than 2,000 degrees. >> the interesting thing about the universe is whenever you look at it in a new way, you discover things you have never seen before. it always surprises us. >> the giant telescope won't be completed until 2020. once constructed it will be

shipped to its home in chile. the bison herd is getting a little bigger this morning. half a dozen bison calves joined a dozen. this comes one week after a baby bison died after running into a fence after being chased by a dog. the park is working to protect the bison. and the seattle aquarium has a new resident. take a look at the new baby see otter. the pup was born yesterday. it's unknown if the little one is a male or female because they remain extremely close to their moms after they are born. the man accused of killing four homeless men is finally under arrest. what we are learning about the suspected serial killers past. the challenges firefighters face after an early morning fire in san francisco.

scene all morning. but now to our other top story this morning. the san francisco 49ers are one win away after returning toes super bowl for the first time in nearly two decades. that comes after a thrilling victory over the new orleans saints. the niners jumped right out in front with vernon davis hooking up for a touchdown. the saints came back to grab a one point lead with less than four minutes in the game. but alex smith answers right back. tucking the ball away. he has wild joe in front of him. 28 yards later he has six. the saints come back. drew brees finds jimmy graham for a 66-yard touchdown. they converse the two point converse and up three. last chance for the niners. smith and davis hooked up again for a 47-yard gain. then it was smith and davis again with 14 seconds on the clock. smith throws the ball for the touchdown. the niners win 36-32. vernon davis clearly emotional on the sidelines.

2. kickoff at 1:30. the playoffs at candle stick giving big boost to local businesses. coming up in just about ten minutes why fans say they don't mind spends extra money to be here. the early morning fire in the city's richmond district which took hours to put out. allie rasmus is live. good morning. >> reporter: now it's a little lighter outside we can show you a better look at the damage of the fire where it happened here at the intersection of 42nd. you can see some of the smoke damage on the homes. and on the -- suspicious about the fire that happened here is how quickly it spread. when firefighters arrived there were flames coming from the front of the building and also from the back of the building. it's about 60-foot long building. it was unusual hesiod how quickly it spread and how long it took firefighters to contain the fire.

about two fires. right now they are going through the home to find out how the fire started and where it started. the home had two separate apartment units. there is a metal gate that separates the two units. when firefighters went in. the fire was fully involved. they tried to get from the second to the third floor. they couldn't get past that gate. what they had to do instead is break open the walls on either side of the unit in the neighbors home and tackle the fire that way. they had to break open halls in the roof. seven people and a baby that lived in the apartment they all got out safely. >> we just heard cracking and popping. and then my boyfriend came into the bedroom and said you know the house next door is on fire. >> now two of the seven people who escaped the fire on either side of the billing they were able to go back to their apartment. the remaining people that had toe vacuate because of the fire they are try -- had to evacuate

because of the fire they are trying to find a new place to stay. as for the building that caught fire, there was only one person living in the building at the time. neighbors say that tenant a woman fled the scene shortly after the fire happened. no one has been able to talk to her just yet. firefighters would like to talk to that tenant and ask her what happened. as for the two firefighters that were injured, we were told they suffered minor burn injuries. they went to the hospital for treatment and said to be okay. your time is 7:35. word this morning a man arrested in southern california for a series of stabbing deaths involving homeless man is a marine and an iraq war veteran. anaheim police took him into custody friday after police say he stabbed a fourth victim to death aids of a fast food restaurant. friday's incident followed three deadly stabbings in the last month. >> i want to say on behalf of

everyone in anaheim our thoughts and hearts go out to the victim. this victim and all the victims including the homeless community. >> the l.a. times reports campo came back from iraq and told someone he was seeing and hearing things. the marines and anaheim police are not commenting on his service. family members are asking for the help of the community to help find her. 31-year-old whereas min vaughn has not been seen or heard from from a few days since christmas. >> she uses the alias of smith.

she has mental illness that has gone untreated. >> she was last seen at her 12th street apartment in oakland. she is 135 pounds and often wears a head wrap. if you have seen her or heard anything, please call police. police are coming together in oakland to end violence in the city. the tower of the faith ministry offered music, food, and community yesterday on havens court boulevard. the block party honored the recent young victims of gun violence. 3-year-old carlos navo, and five-year-old gabriel martinez junior. >> i'm tired of having a tragedy before we come together. let's do something before we have a tragedy.

>> axful gospel is partnering with the city to mentor young people at risk. the family of a bay area merchant marine killed in a shoot willing come together with those that received his organs. a gunman killed 23-year-old charles butler last month while driving in his oakland neighborhood. following the shooting they decided to donate his organs. among the recipients is daniel murphy of antioch that received his liver. they will meet with butlers family for the very first time. three people are dead and three others injured after a deadly car crash in lake county. it happened around 8:00 last night on highway 29 near spruce grove road in a town of lower lake. that is about ten minutes from clear lake. the highway patrol says an suv and another car collided. three people in the car died. there is no word yet on what lead to the crash. this morning six people are still displaced after a fire

caused extensive damage to their home. once there they found flames and heavy smoke coming out of the basement of the home. the fire was quickly put out and no one was injured but the fire did cause $15,000 in damage. two berkeley businesses destroyed by fire are ready for business. now an architect for the buildings owner tell the daily californian both businesses would like to set up shop again but before that happens the site must be cleared of debris. designs for any replacement building would have to be submitted to the city. a city spokesman says nothing has been finalized. good morning, to you. a live look from our rose cam. the fog is back to with us. patchy dense fog over the south bay.

that cloud deck actually acting as a blanket. and has offset the cooling this morning. also a little breezy out there. above 1,000 feet. we have the southwest breeze back. through the delta the winds are up. once we get rid of the patchy dense fog, we will see partly cloudy skies for the most part. our temperatures a huge tumble from what we saw yesterday. take a look at what we are expecting for the next couple of days. sitting near 70 degrees through saturday. todayly be struggling. upper 50s in the forecast. most of us not likely to hit 60 degrees. slightly cooler for tomorrow. now to add insult for that injury there. it will be a breezy day. be prepared for it. satellite radar here. couple systems one to the north and south. we're not going to get any rain out of this. this is the cooler air mass here. over areas of lake tahoe. very dry and gusty conditions. red flag warn willing be in effect for lake tahoe today. if you are traveling for that

was suspicious. we did getten update saying the one person that lived in this building waited 10-15 minutes to call 911 and report the fire. this is what it looked like when firefighters arrived a the the scene at 2:30 this morning. you can see flames coming from the front windows and the back windows of the home. the home is about 60 feet long. the fire spread very quickly and took firefighters two hours to get the fire under control. >> when we got on scene the fire had progressed not only from the second floor but to the third floor and the rear of the building. which tells us the phone call to the fire department was delayed. the resident tried to put the fire out himself. the only fire and civilian called the fire department. >> and fire investigators are still looking for that tenant. when she fled the scene they have not been able to find her. now the people who live on either side of this burning

building there were seven adults and small child that live on both sides that they all got out safely. however five of them can't go back in their homes. if you look behind me this building has shared walls and firefighters couldn't get into the third floor. the fire was too intense and there was a metal gate between the second and third floor here. they couldn't bust open the gate. the they had to break open the shared walls. so red cross was out here earlier. there was five people and that small child that are not able to go back to their home. there was also two firefighters that were injured in putting out this fire. we are told they had minor burns. they went to the hospital for treatment but expected to be okay. >> the san francisco 49ers are going somewhere they have not been since 1997. the nfc championship game. that is after a thrilling finish against the saints out at the stick. the niners jumped in front

within the last 40 minutes we have learned two more bodies have been found aboard the cruise ship that ran aboard in italy. that puts the death toll at 5:00. there were more than 4200 people on board. several americans on board the cruise ship were among those able to get into lifeboats. >> one of the boats was full of 200 people went down and got caught on the railing. the lifeboat tipped. everybody was screaming. >> the captain is accused of abandoning the ship. the captain maintains the reef the ship hit was not marked. help has arrived for the tiny alaskan town was short on fuel. the arrival comes after the coast guard cut a path through hundreds of miles of ice so the tanker could make the delivery.

of kamisha smith. she has some history of mental illness that has gone untreated. >> she was last seen at her apartment in oakland. she is about 135 pounds and often wears a head wrap. if you have seen her or have any information you are asked to call police. six people are still displaced after extensive fire. they were called to south tenth street yesterday afternoon when they arrived they found flames and heavy smoke coming out of the basement of the home. the fire was quickly put out. no one was hurt. the fire did cause an estimated $15,000 in damage. there is still no word on the cause of a huge fire that burned a large office building. they are waiting for engineers to give them the all clear. the building is safe before they burden of proof the fire does not a-- the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

the fire caused more than $3 million in damage. it housed several businesses. time is 8:38. two berkeley businesses destroyed by a large fire now want to reopen. flames tore through the building in november putting both raleigh and cafe out of business. now an architect says both businesses would like to set up shop again. before that happens the site must be cleared of debris. the family of a bay area merchant marine killed in a shooting will come together today with those that received his organs. gunman killed 23-year-old charles butler last month while driving in his oakland neighborhood. following the shooting they decided to donate his organs. daniel murphy of antioch received his liver.
