good morning. details coming in about an early morning shooting. ktvu is at the scene. we'll tell you why firefighters are still on the scene of a fire that started nearly ten hours ago. 49ers fans are still enjoying the thrill of this weekends victory against the saints. fans are also looking ahead to the next step. what you can expect where you can find tickets for the nfc championship game. the pattern is finally changed but before we can discuss rain, we need to talk about cold temperatures.

good morning, to you. it is monday, january 16th it is a holiday. it's martin luther king junior day i'm dave clark. >> and i'm maureen naylor in for pam cook. let's get a check of weather and traffic. >> it's cold out there. a lot of 20s, 30s, and 40s. breezy at times. temperatures low 50s for highs today. these are below average. here is is sal. steve, good morning. traffic is moving along pretty well on this cold morning. and certainly people are out there just a little lighter than usual for this holiday. also the morning commute looks good at the bay bridge toll plaza. let's go back to the desk. in overnight news police in richmond just called off a search for a gunman after a shooting that happened near railroad tracks. it happened at 3:15 in ohio near first. look at the scene here.

richmond police tell ktvu news a 43-year-old man flagged down a passing train. told the train conductor he had been shot by someone from a rooftop. he also said he saw a laser bale. now richmond police were out there searching the area but couldn't find anything. the shooting victim is expected to survive. in another developing news story. police are trying to find out who is responsible for a shootout in oakland. an innocent bystander was shot twice until the arm. he's expected to survive. police got a report of a shooting at 63rd avenue about 10:00 last night. they did find bullet casings at the scene and found the victim on the next block. so far no arrests have been made. time is 6:02. this morning firefighters are still on the scene of a fire in san rafael that started last night at a 90-year-old building. christien kafton is live there this morning with where they are still searching for a cause.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there is still a great deal of activity here. you can see a second crew has just arrived on the scene where the fire was last night. they are swapping out right now. one crew briefing the new crew that just arrived on scene here about the hot spot we've been monitoring and they've been monitoring overnight. there is still a fire hose a line there on the ground that firefighters have been using to put water on that hot spot overnight. they don't want to take any chances with that fire because the hot spot does continue to smolder. as we arrived here i had a chance to walk through the building and take a look at the damage myself. that fire started at 7:30 last night. and started in the back upper unit. quickly engulfed the whole building. in my tour of the building i saw the back area imparticular a deck where the fire may have started. i saw extensive charring in that area. at this point it appears the fire traveled through the roof to burn the whole building. we have seen plenty of neighbors stopping by to see

the damage up close. >> it's all in the back i guess. from this side here there was a lot of flames shooting out of the roof and that far side over there you can see was burning and boards were falling off. >> reporter: coming back to our live picture. you can see the whole front of the building is still urn burned out. the windows knocked out. there is charring here. a fire investigator is expected to only out later this morning to figure out how this fire started in the first place. the fire investigator will have their work cut out for them. the area where the fire may have started is completely burned out. there is very little back there. there may not be a lot of evidence as to how the started. whether continue to monitor the situation out here. for now we are live in san rafael. oakland police continue to look for a teenager accused of sexual assaulting two women. 14-year-old glasper may be armed and dangerous.

the first attack said happened on the night of january 6th between 12th and market streets. six days later another woman reported being assaulted on 11th street. anyone with information about glasper's whereabouts is asked to call oakland police. investigation is happening into a deadly shooting by a santa clara police officer. it happened after a driver suspected of drunk driving was pulled over. coming up in about 11 minutes from now resident in the area teles us about the scene moments after the shooting. a battle is heating up over plans to cut down thousands of trees in san francisco and pacifica. this is video of sharp park gulf course. this is one of the areas it's part of the controversial. others include frank mount davidson. and glen park canyon. the porters want to remove more than 18,000 trees. critics say this would cause the ecosystem to fall apart.

the 49ers are just one win away from the super bowl. niners will be hosting their first nfc championship game in more than a decade. allie rasmus is here to tell us about the football fever that is just sweeping the bay area. good morning, allie. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we were able to talk to excited fans that were still basking in the glory of this weekends 49ers victory against the saints. >> it's incredible. >> reporter: you can see that fan there is carrying the front page of the examiner with the 49ers victory. the words incredible. he's carrying that around with him. fans are looking ahead to the next step to the team. the nfc championship. the niners will play the new york giants on sunday here at candle stick park. 49er fans are optimistic about the matchup after watching the giants beat the green bay packers this weekend. >> the giants won.

[ laughter ] good morning, everybody. let's take a look at the commute. traffic is moving along nicely on this martin luther king holiday. the traffic on highway 4 looks good. certainly people are going. bart is on a saturday schedule today for the holiday. not a lot of slow traffic this morning yet on highway 4 any way. moving along and taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we are expecting it to remain light. people will certainly come. it's not going to be heavy unless there is a crash. and that will change

everything. and this morning as we look at the south bay traffic continues to move along very well. we're also looking at the east bay. 880 southbound looks good. like wise for the dumbarton and san mateo bridge. let's go to steve. we have clear skies. it's really cold out there. don't have to worry about clouds. visibility is great. there is 20s inland. very cold. breezy clear. the wind will die off tonight. that will allow temperatures to plunge. at least the pattern is changed. it's changed to a colder one and clear skies. last week upper 60s to 70s. colder pattern today. we start off with 20s, 30s, and 40s. clear and cold out there. by noon it will be some areas in the higher elevations. 38-48 degrees. later on today upper 40s to low 50s. average this time of year is 57- 67. some of our other temperatures coming in browns valley i saw

two readings. one was 32. the other one was calm so it was 24. st. helena checking in at 29. if you go up above 1,000 feet it's 18. menlo park 29. there is a bunch out there. 26 fairfield. they were 22. the breeze has picked up a little bit. livermore in the 20s. if it wasn't for the breeze everyone else whether be in the 20s. tonight will be colder. that's why the freeze warning has been posted for tonight into tuesday morning. there will be wide spread 20s tomorrow. then we draw our attention right there. today the air quality is good. the visibility is good. it's just the temperatures are going to struggle to warm up very much. is a lot out there. it's just a matter of when it will get here and drop south. to me i think it will hold off until thursday and off and on

good morning. welcome back. time is 6:13. israel and the u.s. have postponed their largest ever war games to avoid aggravates increasing tension between iran and the community. the exercise was scheduled for april. iran is now warning its persian gulf neighbors not to increase their oil output to i place iranian oil. iran has been threatening to block the strait of where the third of the oil tankers pass through. they are also pressuring other countries to cut back on their support for oil from iran. they have been visiting the middle east to explore

alternative supply lines. john huntsman is drop out of the republican race for president. this morning he will endorse mitt romney. huntsman came in third in last weeks new hampshire primary. at the time he said his campaign would continue in south carolina which holds the next primary this coming sad. huntsman has been doing poorly in the polls. the remaining candidates will hold a debate tonight. mitt romney, ron paul, newt gingrich, mitt romney and rick santorum will take the stage tonight. analysts say more of the candidates may drop out if they don't do well in south carolina. the next contest is florida's primary. january 31st. vice president joe biden is coming to san francisco this week for campaign fundraising. the president will attend a

luncheon fundraiser at the bentley reserve conference center on wednesday. the price of admission ranges from $2500 to $10,000 is a person. the money raised will go to president obama's reelection campaign and to the democratic national committee. time is 6:15. we have new information about last weeks attack on two women in san francisco. police are still looking for the man who hit the women with a hammer at a home in the city's sunset district. the woman that lived at the home 76-year-old rose chung was critically injured and took a turn for the worse over the weekend. another woman that was delivering food to the home remains in stable condition. the attacker got away with $10,000 in cash. four people are dead including two children after an apparent murder-suicide in the central valley. it happened early yesterday morning at a fresno apartment complex. police say a woman in her 20s shot and killed her 18-month- old daughter, three-year-old son, and another man believed

to be a cousin before taking her own life. police found another man that had been stabbed. police don't have a motive for the violence. 6:16. santa clara police and the district attorneys office are both investigating a fatal shooting. this happened saturday night on karen drive near homestead road. the officer said he pulled over a 42-year-old santa clara man suspected of drunk driving. the officer said the man was uncooperative and then reached for a gun inside his car. that is when the officer shot and killed him. police say that officer has been on the police force for two years. we don't yet know his name or the motorist that was killed. your time is 6:17. antioch is getting new money to stop a reoccurring flood problem. antioch has received a $3 million grant from the state to stop flooding.

good morning. right now traffic is moving along pretty well on the sunol grade. southbound 680 as you drive south. no problems on the way to the south bay. 6:24. seattle hit with winter storm and guess what the worst is yet to come. yesterday the power went out for several thousand homes and

businesses in seattle. several trees weighed down by the snow knocked down the power lines. the department of transportation has been deicing and preparing roads in time for this mornings commute but now the forecast says wednesday will bring a bigger blanket of snow to seattle as well as other cities alistening the coast. the tiny alaskan village that is dealing with one of the worst winters in decades will finally get the much anticipated delivery of fuel today. russian tanker ship carrying the fuel arrived off the shores of nome over the weekend. the crew spent yesterday laying down the hose they need to transfer the fuel. nome missed its normal fuel deliver in the fall. without that emergency mission, they would have run out of fuel by sometime in march or april. time is 6:25. preparations are under way for the first ever mavericks festival. organizers of the big wave competition came up with the idea for a substitute for the informal gatherings.

the festival would run from 8:00 a.m. to sunset on the day of the competition outside pillar points oceana hotel. if there is no contest, the festival is set to take place on march 31st. some east bay residence say they are concerned about the impact of clayton valley high school attempted change to a charter school. conversion is set to happen in the fall. critics say it could take away money from other students in the district. according to state laws charter schools must be paid about $6,000 per student. this would cost the district at least $1.7 million per year. supporters say the financial details are still being worked out and it's not their intention to rob other schools of funding. time is 6:26. this week sonoma city council will enact on whether to enact is a moratorium on change schools. to limit those businesses coming to the city.

this could effect san francisco based william sonoma. the company wants to return to sonoma and open is a store at the original site on broadway where chuck williams first started selling high end cook ware. the store then moved to san francisco two years later. 6:26. to mark the martin luther king junior holiday today a new list is out on the most tolerant cities in the nation. the daily beast website says durham, north carolina is the most tolerant city. honolulu number two. san francisco number three. other bay area cities making the list include san jose ranked at 14 and vallejo ranked at 15. they looked at hate crimes, discrimination laws and diversity of the population. gold was handed out last night and the hollywood season

last night. tara moriarty joins us live. tara. >> reporter: that is right. fire crew had a helmet cam a little camera that is attached to his helmet. that is what you are about to see. it shows the crews rolling up on the scene. it shows them busting down the front door. breaking down the front of the house. all to save this house from going up in flames. >> ready. >> reporter: now crews got the call off i-80 around 4:30 this morning. a 24-year-old man and his girlfriend were sleeping inside when the fire broke out. they heard popping noises, glass shattering, and jumped out the back window to safety. >> on the way here the dispatch let us know that all residence were out. upon arrival we had fire on the front porch of the home.

it was getting into the house and into the attic. >> reporter: crews can't figure out what caused the fire which they believe started like he said outside the home in the entry way. there was a washer and drier there. they weren't plugged in. arson will have to investigate. we have learned that police are on their way. crews tell me because of budget cuts recently, the nearest fire station shut down in july. it took two to three minutes longer to get to the house fire than it would have in the past. so firefighters were expressing their disappointment in that but they said a least everyone got out safely. we're live in pinole i'm tara moriarty. your time now 6:32. overnight news a short time ago richmond police called off a search for a gunman blamed for a shooting near railroad tracks. it happened on ohio near first. richmond police tell us a 43- year-old man flagged down a

train and told the conductor someone shot him from a rooftop. richmond police did search the area. haven't found anything. that man is expected to survive. san francisco new sheriff is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow on criminal charges stemming from accusations that he physically abused his wife. on friday prosecutors charged sheriff ross with domestic violence, child endangerment, and persuading a -- the sheriff was booked and later released from the jail that he oversees on $35,000 bail. mirkarimi says he's innocent and refutes to step down. police are look into a possible connection between a cold case and accused serial killer. joseph naso is on trial in marin county charged with the murders of four women between

crashed. killing her husband and daughter. her one-year-old grandson did survive. it happened on saturday afternoon. she sideswiped another car and her truck rolled over several times. she was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and vehicle manslaughter. more red light cameras could be coming to marin county. the independent journal reports that san rafael leaders will announce if they will expand the red light cameras. they are operated by red flex. the same company that operates the devices in napa. they placed two of the cameras along irwin street two years ago. they bring in $80,000 worth of revenue each year. time now 6:37. today is a national holiday honoring dr. martin luther king junior. several events are taking police in the bay -- taking place in the bay area. how you can commemorate dr. king's 1965 civil rights march in alabama. a black and white silent movie was the top winner at

residential building in san rafael. it started last night on harcourt. tara moriarty has -- christien kafton has been out there all morning. >> reporter: let's start off with the good nows that nobody was injured when the four unit building went up in fire. you can see some san rafael firefighters still on the scene monitoring the fire. if you come around to the right you can see a hose laid out here. the hose goes all the way to the back of the home where crews have been going back here every half hour to put water on a stubborn hot spot that was smolders overnight. when we arrived shortly before 4:00 we had a chance to walk through that building. i could tell you the firsthand opinion what happened. the fire started about 7:30 last night. it started in the back upper unit. it quickly engulfed the whole building. in my tour i saw the back area imparticular a deck area where the fire may have started. i saw extensive charring in

that area. at this point it appears the fire traveled from that back deck area through the roof to burn the whole building. this morning we saw neighbors that saw the fire last night stop by for a closer look. >> it was wild. there was fire trucks from everywhere. the flames were shooting out the top. it was scary. >> reporter: now coming back out to our live look. the front windows have been punched out here. a lot of that burning is really on the back end of that building. we are waiting on the arrival of a fire investigator. that fire investigator is set to come out here later to find out what started this blaze. i can tell you fire investigators will have their work cut out for them. there was not a whole lot left in the back area. it will be tough to determine exactly how this fire started. for now we are live in san rafael christien kafton. time now 6:47. the death toll is rising in italy after a cruise ship disaster aboard the costa

concordia. they now have recovered a sixth body in this. the search for missing passengers is suspended because the seas are too rough. 16 people still not accounted for including two americans. the costa concordia rolled on its side on friday after it came too close to an island reef. >> people were lined up in the hallway with kids. people were crying and screaming. >> i was crying and terrified. >> the company that owns the costa concordia cruise ship admits the captain did not follow proper procedures. here in the bay area there are several events honoring dr. martin luther king junior. one of them is the annual freedom train. they will leave the station at 9:30 this morning. it will stop in sunnyvale, palo alto before arriving in san francisco. the day has also inspired a

building in a southern california refinery plant. firefighters were called to the conocophillips refinery around 4:30 this morning. it's in the area of wilmington near long beach. there are 125 firefighters on the scene. it started on the second floor of an administrative building. not inside the fuel producing facility. there are no word of any injuries. a court appearance set for tomorrow for a former u.s. marine and iraq war veteran accused of killing homeless men. anaheim police arrested itzcotl ocampo on friday. the suspects father tells the associated press his son started drinking heavily after he came back from iraq. the former marine also refused treatment at the va hospital. time is 6:56. people who paid for commemorative bricks on the golden gate bridge 25 years ago
