been looking for the 14-year- old. they released his name after two similar robberies and assaults near west oakland middle school this month. >> we do know that during the robbery and the assault he simulated a hand gun so we treated him as armed dangerous. >> is he a mentally ill child and they got his name exploited. >> reporter: the family say they are furious over the release of his name by police and have contacted the naacp. >> and i ain't going quietly in to the night because i am going to file my three million dollar lawsuit for slandering a 14-year-old. >> reporter: a 14-year-old they say can't read or write while schools confirm he wassen romeed at oakland high his family said he has been in and out of juvenile hall. >> he turned himself in because his mother is scared for his life because people are thinking he rared somebody and my family turned him in because

they don't want him hurt. >> reporter: and the grandmother said he has only admitted to stealing a bike and not the assaults. we talked to the da which said it's not decided whether he will be tried as an adult. we are live, ktvu channel 2news. >> santa clara county launched a new effort to curb what they call an ectasy epidemic. we are live in sanious with the deadly trend that lead the county to take action. >> reporter: a lot of people come to this area, a lot of nightclubs here and now the santa clara county health authority want to reach the same people that come to the clubs and tell them that the drug they are using -- is very dangerous. santa clara county health officials say more and more young people are getting high on ectasy. >> started to see more deaths than we ever saw before and at that point we felt we needed to do something about it.

. >> reporter: today county officials launched an anti ectasy campaign and released this dvd called lives out of balance. the documentary features young people negatively affected by the drug. it includes a 23-year-old who died in 2010 after taking ectasy at a rave. the officials say the popularity of the drug is bad news for teens and young adults. >> it's created what i feel is a public health emergency. >> reporter: one in phorotones said they tried it. it's not cool at all. it damages you. it doesn't do anything good to your future like your brain. it won't help. >> reporter: many think the campaign is a good idea but can only go so far. >> i think that it's a great effort to make the video and get out there but the kids are -- the young adults, the preteens, whatever you want to call it'll get out and want to

live railroad life, not listen to the parents, teachers, to anyone really. >> reporter: the county firms said that their aim to is to deglamorize the drug and save lives. >> ktvu has documents give egg new details about the domestic violence case against the sheriff. a court complaint said police spoke to a neighbor who reported the alleged abuse. that neighbor said lopez said her husband hurt her before and threatened to take away their son. the video reportedly shows lopez pointing to a bruise on her arm, crying and saying she wanted to work on her marriage. another neighbor reported lopez saying their son witnessed the alleged abuse. >> the bay area is locked in a cold snap and robert honda is live with the safe a concerns. >> reporter: over here near downtown san jose and this is a

shelter that opened up around 5:00 and now you see more activity going onto help the homeless stay warm. the community homeless alliance ministry is passing out blankets and anyone who needs them and they say that's thin protection against the cold. there was a rush to get in to the shelter after the homeless agency invision opened. when temperatures drop in to the freezing range they drop their red tape. >> we go into a cold weather instatus and montgomery street and the other shelters we have open up and take anybody in off the streets and that will happen tonight. >> it gets hard to keep your body temperature warm so a lot of times we to double up on the clothes. >> reporter: the county public health department is recommending people take precautions against the cold but warn against drastic measures or shortcuts to save on the heating bill. it's not just the homeless that feel the chill. one man we talked to had just

tomorrow to protest anti piracy legislation being debated in congress. wikipedia will shut down for 24 hours. twitter and google will stay up but google will post a statement opposing the bills. the senators sponsor the protect the ip act and the stop online piracy act. movie studios and recording companies say they are necessary to fight online piracy but content presenters like wikipedia say it'll hurt free speech giving the government the right to shut down websites. >> occupy san francisco is planning another protest promising the biggest turn out since anti-war demonstrations in 2003. organizers are calling occupy wall street west. it's set to happen on friday. the group's website said

. facial officials crediting working smoke detectors for saving a family of five from this early morning house fire in martinez. it started at 4:00 a.m. smoke alarms woke up the family anyone side who then ran through flames to get out safely. it's believed a pellet stove started the fire. >> a judge today set a preliminary hearing for the two men accused of attacking brian stow. they face charges include agriculture assault and
