well good morning to you, welcome to thursday january 19th, i am dave clark. >> and let's check in with steve paulsen for the forecast today. well we have some rain to the north, we have some good rain working its way down along the coast and we are still a little bit away with heavy rain to the north, for us we will wait until this afternoon and south bay may not get much at all, but it will be warm, upper 50s to lower 60s. traffic is looking good coming up to the willow pass grade with no major problems. in san francisco northbound 101, let's go back to the desk. in topping our news, search is on for a gunman who opened fire on an undercover cop that led to a chase along the east

bay. alex savage has more. >> reporter: the man who fired on that officer is still on the loose and that's the latest update that we got from the san leandro police department. this was a brazen attack. the gunman opened fire from close range and luckily that officer was not hurt. the shooting happened just after 9:00 and an undercover narcotics officer was doing surveillance in that neighborhood and started following a suspicious car. suddenly the car pulled up next to the officer and the driver fired self shots into the unmarked police car. none of the shots hit the officer but police are trying to figure out what motivated the shooting. >> the suspect proceeded back to the officers from a distance from six feet away and fired

multiple rounds at our sergeant but it is very fortunate that he didn't get hurt. >> reporter: after the shooting the gunman sped off leading police on a high-speed chase a long surface streets and freeways. he was last seen with the interchange with 13. he eventually got away and police are looking for the car, a blue acura sedan. they don't have a description on the gunman but they are working on some good leads. alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. it happened yesterday morning at the intersection of cherry street and mallry after. the suspect slammed into another car and the driver died at the scene. the deadly crash came shortly

after police received a call of three men kick down the door of a nearby home. responding officers spotted the suspect's car racing away from the scene. >> the speeds were approximately 80 miles per hour. in short, assure pursuit -- a sure pursuit ensued and because of the reckless driving, the officers called off the pursuit. >> police arrested the suspects at the scene. all three are 20 years old and they have extensive criminal histories. ron was the kin suffered injured are yous in that crash. we are expecting rain through early next week. claudine wong is keeping an eye on what is coming our way, claudine wong? >> reporter: we came to this

creek in martinez because this creek is downtown and in years passed it has flooded, it flooded when the beavers moved in, in 2006 and they have this marker to watch the water levels rise and as you can see the water level does not even hit the bottom of that marker, it is so low and this is not it, up in doneville, the flood level is two feet and right now that river is at 5.5 feet high. our crews said they can't even get their boats in until the river gets to 25 feet and a lot of people are looking for rain and a lot of people also want to see the rain coming into this area. if we walk around, we can show you the water level and we can just peak over the edge and you

old women in separate incidents two weeks ago. the suspect pretended to have a gun and sexually assaulted them. this week's game goes off without a hitch. pg&e has spent nearly a million dollars to prevent another stadium power outage. there were two games last month and pg&e has since upgraded software, replaced old wiring and installed a new circuit to handle any over loads. there is also a new push to make sure fans are safe and police will be on the outlook. 20 people have been arrested at last saturday night's game.

happening right now, presidential candidate newt gingrich is holding a town hall. newt gingrich is not speaking there yet but this is in south carolina, newt gingrich along with the other republican candidates is campaigning in south carolina ahead of the primaries there on saturday. now in the meantime, newt gingrich's two daughters are coming to his defense during an interview with one of his ex- wives. the two hour interview will air tonight. she talked about the fact that he began an affair with a woman who is now his third wife and the daughters said anybody who has uncover a -- undergone a divorced understands it is

filled with memories of different events and feelings. rick perry is suspending his presidential campaign. he said he would reassess his campaign and move on to south carolina. if we have anymore developments we will bring them to you. four more of that cruise ship was just identified. 21 people are still listed as missing. the search operationswere suspended when the position of the cruise ship changed, making it very unstable. you can see how unstable it looks right now. the ship was carrying more than 4200 passengers and crew and

washington d.c. announced they are launching their own investigation of this cruise ship disaster. there are more than 16 million americans who go on cruises every year. >> reporter: the house wants a full review of operating standards and crew training procedures. they admit the costa concordia was a preventible tragedy. they show the industry needs much more regulation. >> i know the cruise industry likes to present a vacation like this as happy and nothing ever goes wrong, i know it is considered safe but it is still not safe enough, i think. >> reporter: cruise ships are much less regulated than

damage or injuries and no tsunami alert was issued. and in christ church they church, the quake killed 128 people -- 182 people. the reactor melted and was a disaster. the plant has stabled but will take decades to fully decommission. back here at home, san francisco police are searching for two teens who stole a 12- year-old boy's bike at gunpoint. it happened at the housing complex and he told police he was riding his bike when two teens stopped him. the two teens stopped him and took off with the bike and the 12-year-old ran home. he was not hurt. we all know if apple's big

. good morning, traffic is moving along well, getting some muni delays for streetcars underground, it could delay your trip. a car filled with passengers was swept away during the canal flooded and it became level with a parking lot of a grocery store. the driver tried to go through the water but the car floated into that canal. a child an adult had to be rescued last night but at least three other people including a child and the car are still missing. well the storm system

headed to i bay area really walloped the pacific northwest. a record-setting 6.8 inches of snow fell at tacoma national airport and schools were closed and the snow is expected to taper off today but the driving is still treacherous and that's causing a lot of concerns for emergency responders. that is the fear in this kind of weather that too many people will be out driving and they will crash and we will have a whole extra set of calls to get to. now tomorrow, rain is in the forecast and it is expected to warm up and they say it could trigger flooding. people we spoke to said

narcotics officer who started following the suspicious car. he pulled up right next to the officer and the driver fired several shots into the unmarked police car. the officer was not hit and we are told he is grateful he survived this attack. >> he obviously had a lot of adrenaline flowing so now i think everything is setting in on him and he is doing great. >> after the shooting, the gunman sped off leading police on that high-speed chase on surface streets and he was last seen on 580 near the upper change with children. san leandro police are looking for a blue acura sedan but they don't have a specific description. they are not sure if the shooter knew he fired on a police officer since this was

an unmarked undercover car. san francisco mirkarimi is pleading not guilty stemming from a domestic violence complaint. both he and his wife strongly deny charges. last night she took to the airways to help her husband and it was discussed with a radio station. lopez appeared to blame outside forces. >> there are many who will not forgive my husband for the son of an immigrant being married to a latino. >> now earlier, the mayor said there are no imminent plans to suspend sheriff mirkarimi. now bigger than expected budget acts, the city issued

more part-time employees. now the higher number gives them options on consolidating services and choosing which jobs to cut. in the end they will find 400 people will lose their jobs. these budget cuts come now as oakland loses funding in state redevelopment money. it is a drastic proposal from students struggling to pay for school. here is a surprising reaction from the president of the school. >> reporter: he is considering eliminating tuition all together although he is questioning how it would work.

about tuition creases and how it has been plagued. >> reporter: here is the idea students have. they want the school to drop the $12,000 a year tuition and instead they will commit 5% of their annual income and if you earn more, say $100,000 a year, you would still pay back that 5% which translates to double what the other students are paying in the end. i can't imagine any student that is willing to pay more for the same education than another student and students have run muched the number and it is possible. today they are trying to address a financial proposal. we are trying to get reaction

and the first system usually falls apart, there is incredible rain and this has a lot of moisture with it and rain is making it along the coast but for some we are getting a little bit of a break. it is slowly work its way south but there is a lot out here and friday is a much better system than the system we are dealing with today. by noon cloudy and afternoon it will be cloudy for all, the rain will begin mainly in the north and it may not reach san jose and it may not amount to a hail of beans. it does much better than first after a long stretch of dry weather which is exactly what we had. we are getting closer, an inch and a quarter fort brag and we still have a ways to go.

caucuses back on january 3rd. the republican party from iowa is about to release the certified results from the iowa caucuses this morning but the des moines register is reporting some new tabulations are showing rick rick santorum got it by a third of the votes. it indicated mitt romney had beat rick santorum by 8 votes. there is more controversy coming out about mitt romney and about his finances. mitt romney is now acknowledging he has part of his millions of dollars invested in the cayman island but his aides are saying mitt romney never used that location as a tax haven. earlier this week, they jumped on him saying it jumped from a 1 5% rate.

a man is behind bars after allegedly pointing a firearm at a parent. coming up on mornings on 2 what police found inside the suspect's home. some major things happening, sal is all over it, what is going on. what i told you about, dozens of firefighters are looking to put out a house fire. the quinby neighborhood here, news chopper 2 just got onto the scene. the fire started after 5:00 this morning and it is a large single family home honor wood avenue. when they arrived to the attic and home was engulfed. only one person was inside. no word on what started the fire but damage legs extensive.
