tunnel. essentially, right behind that safeway there, there is a tunnel where the lines go, that's not happening because of the car that went in the tunnel. how ha happened -- i don't know. you could do it, it happened. muni told us that they have shuttle buses between the west portal station and embarcadero. whenever this happens, the shuttle buses are crowded. it's not a good morning for muni. 7:02. back to the desk. the is on for the driver who fired at an undercover police officer on san leandro

drive. alex savidge is live in san leandro. what led up to the shooting? >> reporter: there was an undercover narcotics investigation goes on -- going on. the shooting other -- shooter opened up fire. the police officer was not hurt. the shooting happened just after:00 last night on aloha drive. police say -- after 9:00 last night on aloha drive. investigators are trying to figure out what prompt the shooting. >> it was a verbal exchange. the suspect made a u-turn and

then proceeded back towards the officer from a distance about six feet away. fired multiple rounds at our sergeant. it's very fortunate that he did not get hurt. the lieutenant i talked to said this morning they are working on good leads and hope to make an arrest soon. we're live in san leandro, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:04. we've been following developing news for you. firefighters just finishing putting out a house fire in san jose. the fire started just after 5:00 a.m. look at this picture. a large single-family home on

norwood drive. firefighters say when they got there the attic and garage were fully engulfed in flames. you can see the damage. there was only one person inside. they did get out safely. still no word on what has been damaged. there was also a gun fire at an antiachigh school. police went to deer valley high yesterday afternoon. they got a call about a man allegedly having a gun. nobody was hurt or threatened. divers resumed the search for the 21 people still missing after that cruise disaster. coming up at 7:15, we'll have a live report out of italy to learn how the search effort is going. we'll have a report on what a

california law make wants to do to make -- lawmaker wants to do to make cruise ships safer. uc president mark yudof said he's considering eliminating the proposal to raise tuition. he says he's willing to talk about it. protest about tuition increases have plagued the university campus for the past two years. this is video from the september rally. now, here is the idea that students have laid out. they want the university to

drop the 12,192 tuition a year. and then they would pay back the tuition with the money from their new job. >> i think it would be fine. i don't know -- i mean, you have to crunch the numbers but i think in the end, it's a good proposal. the uc graduate salary, about $50,000 a year. unless you make less. you would still have to pay back that 5% which doubles what others are paying for in the end. the graduate we spoke to seemed to think berkeley grads would do it from others who stand for such a reputable regency.

7:14. new this morning, in just the last hour, reports started coming in that texas governor rick perry is suspending his campaign for the republican presidential nomination. as you may recall, after not doing well in the iowa caucuses, perry had said he would reassess his campaign. then he said he would move forward to south carolina. in the last hour, a big about-face. the republican party of iowa announced the certified total at a vote just this news -- a news conference new this morning. and new tabulations show that rick santorum finished ahead by mitt romney by 34 votes.

a new poll of independent voters show president obama has vote to do if he hopes to win them over. this time only 34% of voters in the "new york times" poll is they have a positive feeling. 70% say they want more gop candidate options. divers in italy have resumed search efforts on that capsized cruise ship this morning. that was arthey had to -- after they had to suspend the search operation. greg burk is live in italy with the latest on the search

san francisco police are stepping up their efforts to solve a mysterious homicide in the city's bayview district nearly two years ago. investigators say juan chen was beaten to death for no apparent reason. yesterday, homicide detectivessed returned to the -- detectives returned to the scene of the crime. they handed out fliers opening -- hoping to find more leads. >> i'm hoping that someone will have remembered something.

several metro lines are shut down due to a wrong-bay driver. claudine wong is live in the castro district with more on the transit mess. when you look at the picture behind you, you wonder how did this driver get into the ton. >> that's right. everyone we talk to say, i don't get why this driver would go into this tunnel and how this driver would get so far. you can see the drews -- crews walking in the tunnel right now. this is at the castro safeway. this is at dubose and church. they are trying to figure out how to get this vehicle out. and from talking to them, they said their plan is to -- is to use the train right now and go into the tunnel as it is supposed to and use the power to pull that car out of there so they can get muni traffic back up and running.

this is gonna take a while. i want to take you on the other side of castro or church street. big crowds with people trying to figure out how they are gonna get to work today. they've been leading them up on these shuttle trains and buses. i have talked to people who say, well, it won't be our typical commute to work. you will have to be patient -- you will have to be patient. they have to squeeze in to get the doors closed because it's very difficult to get around. again, this is such a -- still a developing story. the mess that driver has left behind remains. if you are using muni, it will be a mess. sal has been following this all morning long. sal, it's going to be a long morning for many, many commuters? >> right.

a lot of people are gonna give up on this and watching it at home. you can take some other lines. if you go to the sfmta site, they have subway tiffs for you there. this has happened before where something has caused the -- has caused the trains not to run. they have a whole -- instead of going under the ground here, the trains cannot go underground. you might want to take the f- line or other services that will get you down to the embarcadero or you could take the shuttles but they are very crowded. this is a developing story. we'll get you more information as it comes out. san francisco's new sherr sitch due in court. ross mirkarimi is expected to plead not guilty to three misdemeanor charges stemming from a domestic violence flight. both he and his wife strongly deny the charges. yesterday, his wife eleana

san francisco police say two women attacked during a home invasion robbery in the sunset district have been upgraded to stable condition. the suspect who broke into the 20th avenue home last week is still on the loose. police say he attacked a 76- year-old woman with a hammer and a knife. another woman who was delivering good to the house was also attacked. we have learned that $10,000 was stolen. the suspect is described as a cantonese asian male driving a beige sedan with taillights shaped like triangles. new information on the remains found by the hollywood sign in hollywood. bob decastro is live with more. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yeah, they are resuming their church now with daylight for a
