rain finally returns to the bay area and the umbrellas come out. tonight we are tracking more wet weather on the way tomorrow. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. we are on storm watch tonight with rain in the bay area and snow up in the sierra. it is a long overdue combination that suddenly ends a winter dry spell that's been lingering for weeks. bill martin tracking a second

storm that's headed our way. we're going to start up in the sierra. eric rasmussen already up in blue canyon where they are seeing some accumulation. >> you can see we already have a layer of snow and take a look, there's more of it coming down tonight. the stuff we have at blue canyon it's not all that deep. but a little high up i80. i spoke to ski resort operators during a season that's thankfully snow. in just a few hours, fresh snow piled up in places that have hardly seen any all season. >> we need the water and we need the snow. >> so it's kind of overdue.

>> oh yeah, definitely. >> reporter: it's also the need of chains. >> i'm thinking i should throw some on. >> reporter: by 6:00 driving became treacherous in places. signs warned of a 30-mile-per- hour in places. it's all hands for caltrans. they had 200 people on duty and 235 people when the fest plates started rolling. >> we got our sanders and we're just keeping it off the road. >> reporter: even for those putting in overtime all of this snow is a welcomed sight. >> we're glad to see it. skiers are glad to see it. the ski resorts are great to see it. it's great to see it, we need the water. >> back out here live, caltrans has told me it has seen a number of spin outs and minor wrecks but no mayor accidents. they said just like we have

here you should expect to be using chains out here for at least the next few days. eric rasmussen. >> here's another view of the snow. this is what it looks like from a caltrans camera giving us a live picture of squall valley. it's been snowing there all evening and we've watched it accumulate throughout the evening. and this is what we need. rainfalling in the bay area today. the afternoon commute was rainfall accumulations nearly an inch in santa rosa. elsewhere it's raining out there fairly hard in some places right now. the radar is not p p picking it all you have but i have reports in the north bay of consistent light rainfalling. continue all night, look for some wet possible in the morning commute. here's the big story. this is the first, the door is open. there's a bigger one sitting out in the pacific. we will look at that one and

how it will impact you on friday. the first rain in months caused trouble. they responded to one crash after another. >> reporter: within 10 minutes, 10 cars crashed within feet of each other on highway 101. >> we had two right behind us and three more behind that. >> reporter: because we were riding along with the fire department we were on scene at a three car accident when two other sets of vehicles crashed around us. >> it's the first rain of the season pretty much. once that happens you're going to see all these accidents. >> reporter: sirens started blasting in santa rosa after the rain started falling. >> we were at three different accidents in a five minute span. >> reporter: it turns out it's

not unusual to see a domino of accidents. it turns out it's not unusual after the oil gets wet. since the rain started today there have been 28 collisions in sonoma county. one of those accidents fatal. in santa rosa, patti lee, ktvu news stay with ktvu for continuing coverage. bill will be back with how the weather will affect this weekend's game. at this hour help is on the way as rain has just started to fall. gusts of up to 82 miles per hour pushed the fire across parch land. a state of energy has been declared in washo county and 10,000 people have been ored to evacuate. just a few minutes ago we learned that 10 homes have

report fell well below analyst expectations. the news came as the stocks dropped more than $57 or 9% in afterhours ratings. google's shares went up. but analysts were estimates 20% growth. foreign exchange rates and changes for online updating has been blamed for the drops. 352,000 people filed for unemployment last week. that's the lowest number in six years. the unemployment rate should drop. the encouraging news about the jobs market helped the markets move higher for a third consecutive day. the dow rose 52 points. apple unveiled three

now to san francisco where a suspected drunk driver caused huge problems for thousands of nummi drivers. an impatient driver darted around a parked car and drove straight into a nummi tunnel. then he kept on driving for some distance before crashing into a platform. you see it there. nummi had to close down the tunnel which forced commuters on to shuttle buses. >> a lot of people question how this happened. we will certainly do an investigation. nummi was able to push the suv off to the side of the track and reseem service about two hours later. scott mitchell was arrested. newark police have identified the innocent victim kilned yesterday. the man who died was 69-year- old robert sheny of pleasanton. a small memorial was created

for him at the scene of that crash on mauri avenue in newark. three men were arrested and could be arraigned as soon as tomorrow. the men had broken into a home and took off when officers spotted them. the chase was called off long before the crash occurred. prosecutors in san francisco charged a shuttle bus driver in connection with a fatal crash at one of the city's most dangerous intersections. the driver is accuse of running a red light on octavia. the driver 64-year-old wallis richardson is charged with misdemeanor vehicle manslaughter. san francisco sheriff ross mikerimi was seen in front of the judge tore.

>> reporter: this is the scene as mirkerimi appeared in front of a judge today. he pled not guilty. it all stemmed from a new year's eve altercation in which mirkerimi grabbed and bruised the arm of his wife. lopez came to court today to fight that order. she told the judge she wants her husband back home with her, quote i think the violence against me is i don't have my family with me. this country is trying to pull my family apart. this is the real violence. >> but prosecutors today revealed that lopez wanted to change the lops and wanted to know if police would arrest the sheriff. a video made by a neighbor shows lopez displaying a bruise

aáepb saying we need help. mirkerimi agreed that the bruise was after an argument but did not indicate spousal abuse. mirkerimi will have to stay 150 feet from his wife, son and home. now to italy where rescue crews are on a race against time as they try to locate 21 people still missing from a cruise ship. they focused on an evacuation route that is now 60 feet under water. this video shows just how difficult the e search must be.

there's bad weather in the forecast, a storm would delay recovery efforts and the ship could sink into deeper water. there are new allegations tonight about the actions of the captain scatino. a cook from the ship said the captain ordered dinner for himself and a woman after the ship hit the rocks. a new audio tape of the ship's communications indicates the officers were still reporting only an electrical problem, a full half hour after the accident. a few light showers out there still. it's coming down fairly consistently. it's a moderate to light rainfall. it will leave wet roadways in the morning. it overnight lows not in the 20s or 30s but in the 40s and even some low 50s. tomorrow morning, it's not frosty. it's not freezing in the bay area, just wet on the ground for your commute. tomorrow a stronger storm moving our way. you saw those reds and yellows move through. at least double what we saw today. so we could see over an inch to

there was some rivetting testimony during a preliminary hearing for accused killer joseph naso. naso's ex-wife took the stand as the two faced each other for the first time in years. >> i'm just glad it's over. >> reporter: her name is judith naso and her husband is accused killer joseph naso. >> do you think he's guilty of the crimes he's accused of? >> i don't know. >> reporter: judith naso testified in her ex-husband' preliminary hearing. they divorced in 1958 and today he angrily asked his wife, did

chopper went down in the southern province of helman. american marines have a large presence there. this is the deadliest crash since 30 soldiers died last august. the u.s. soldiers say the number of suicides among soldiers are dropping. last year there were 278 suicide. that works out to five suicide every week. even though that number is down 9% compared to 2010. the army also reported that violent sex crimes and domestic violence have increased about 30% since 2006. and child abuse is up 43%. in sacramento california republicans failed today in a rare attempt to override a governor's veto. governor brown vetoed the bill

the state of california from reducing inhome care payments to low income residents. a u.s. district judge said the 20% reduction would put elderly and disabled recipients at risk. state officials say the court delays have cost california $2 billion. they plan to appeal today's decision. the california supreme court is taking up the legality of medical american laws. a ruling is not expected though for several months but could have a major impact on dispensaries. a new business forecast shows three sections of the bay area are poised to add jobs. the san francisco, san mateo marin region could see a 5% increase. the figures come from the business forcasting center

uc berkeley students are staging a sit in inside a campus library at this hour. they're protesting reduced library hours and fewer services at a time when fees and tuition at university of california schools keep going up. the students told us they're conducting a teach in at the anthropology library. the library used to open from 9:00 until 6:00. but last month the hours changed and it's now open from noon until 5:00. only on 2, a new genetic test that's giving a set of twins a chance to win that they wouldn't have had just a year ago. the girls were born with a rare metabolic disorder. john fowler tells us about the screening that saved their

wet roadways. occasional showers tonight, they linger into the morning. over the weekend, we have more showers in the forecast. the first rain of 2012, occasional light showers continue tonight. then we get this one teed offshore. friday's storms have more wind, more rain and more snow. it gets in here late saturday. and the heaviest rain will be over an inch in san francisco. it's not a 10 out of 10 but it's a solid 8-1/2. traveling to the mountains tomorrow night, dicey at best. you know it will be. so if you go early tomorrow if you're going to the mountains that's your best bet. here's what the shower activity looks. tomorrow morning there'll be a lit bit of wet on the roadways. there's friday at 8:00 a.m., a

little bit of relative activity. then a little more at lunchtime, check this out. it starts to light up. there's some wind developing, some rain. and then about friday at about 5:00 you see the afternoon commute then into the evening hours. so definitely a wet day tomorrow. if you have outdoor plans, if you're working outdoors, i don't think you're working outdoors. if you're running p.e. classes i don't think you're going to be doing it in the afternoon. it's going to be wet, in the mountains i mentioned the snow. snow levels remain pretty high. because these are mid-latitude storms. we're seeing snow on blue canyon. snow levels come up but they're still going to see a lot of snow. we're seeing 10 to 15-inches with that winter storm warning. what they're going to see in some places over a foot to 2 feet of snow. the forecast highs tomorrow, warmer because of the clouds and the rain. actually warmer isn't it like it has been. in the 20s.

with your bay area weekend, it shapes up like this. it looks like a january weather pattern. what you would expect. tonight's deal an appetizer, the main course tomorrow. the travel amount is going to be dicey. afternoon tomorrow is going to be dice dicey. >> winter weather is still taking a toll on many people in the seattle area. washington state saw heavy snow. many schools and businesses are also closed and up to 200 homes and businesses are without power. rain is expected in western washington tomorrow. possibly causing some flooding. the ice storm also caused problems at the seattle tacoma airport. roads and highways around the airport were temporarily shut down today. most outbound flights were delayed for several hours and that caused numerous flights to and from the bay area to be cancelled. hockey and college basketball coming up next with mark.
