around san francisco as the niners get ready to take on the giants. and i'm appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that. >> gingrich strikes back but who's momentum took a hit heading into this weekend's south carolina primary? ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning, thank you for waking up with us it's friday, january 20th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. here is steve. >> thank you very much. happy friday everybody. rain beginning to move right back into the picture. didn't take long. if you didn't have any rain probably foggy or misty or drizzly. there is rain moving in from marin county. and right there. it will be a sign of things to come. temperatures in the 50s but moderate to heavy rain moving in later this afternoon and tonight. here is sal. steve, good morning. highway 4 looks like we have rain moving through there.

and also some busy traffic getting busier especially in antioch. also the morning commute looks pretty good here on the 80 freeway. again, you will be dealing with the wet weather for most of the day. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. all right sal. topping our news at 6:01. the first of several planned occupy protest in san francisco is due to begin at any moment. this will be the city's biggest demonstration in years. ktvu claudine wong is joining us live now. she is getting all the information on this. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning. we were just talking to a gentleman. you see the gentleman on the bike he is supposed to be documenting the protest. this is goldman sacks. protestors told us they would be here at 6:00 a.m.. we haven't seen any protestors yet. what we have seen is the barricades around in this plaza. there is only one entrance in. we have seen a lot of security keeping an eye on things. again, this is supposed to be a

day of day long protests throughout san francisco's financial district. i want to show you a look at justin herman plaza too. that is another meeting place this morning we expect to see some crowds as the day progresses. right now no camps there. the camps have been gone. it's still shut down for renovation over there. this day is significant. the occupy organizers say they are moving away with the camps and teams that represented the occupy movement all last year. and they are moving forward mass protests. again these protests are expected to start at 6:00 p.m.. a lot of people say it will show people the movement is more organized. they are targeting goldman sacks. they are targeting bank of america. they are going to move their way through the financial district starting at 6:00 this morning. through 8:00 a.m.. again you are taking a live look at the goldman sacks building here on california street. it's raining pretty hard out here.

and again this is supposed to be a long day. we don't know if that has delayed the organization of protestors out here. we'll keep an eye on things. live in san francisco cock claudine wong. 6:03. also bay area courts will be targeted by occupy protests as part of a national protest in 100 cities to occupy the courts. demonstrators are protesting the recent landmark supreme court decision that wanted to remove the most limits. demonstrations planned today outside courthouses in san francisco, oakland, and san jose. and this morning dozens of occupy cal protestors are continuing this marathon demonstration inside of a uc berkeley campus library. they look over the anthropology library yesterday to protest the latest cuts in campus library hours. a lot of faculty members strongly support the demonstrators and worked out a deal with campus police to prevent a crack down.

that deal we're told is only good through this morning. it's not clear what will happen next. this sunday in case you didn't know the niners verses the giants right here on ktvu channel 2. the excitement is definitely building. tara moriarty joins us now from san francisco with how fans are getting ready for the big game. tara. >> reporter: we are here at justin herman plaza and the ferry building is it will up. he actually requested to work sunday so he could drive fans around and experience the excitement. >> so now we are ready for our next game. and i'm going to work on sunday. and then we will see what we have. 49ers. [ laughter ] >> reporter: what do you have to say to the new york giants? >> giants, giants are giants but we are 49ers.

>> reporter: and 49er fans will be decked out in red and gold today. it's their job. we also found a lifelong 49er fan that makes novelty nugget hats. and now the creator of the soft foam hats can not keep up with the demand. he got the idea from packer cheese head hats. each nugget takes an hour to make and he only has three moles with 100 orders waiting. his hat sells for $20 online. now back out here live it is raining. they tell us that they have covered the field with the tarp which will stay in place for an hour and a half until game time. however maybe a different store for the giants that have artificial turf back home and not used to playing on a muddy feel. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. >> you can watch sunday's nfc championship game right here

[ applause ] >> gingrich went on to say the claims of his ex-wife are false. mitt romney took gingrich to task for refer together years he worked closely with president reagan. ingly looked at the reagan

diary. you're mentioned one. in the diary he said you had an idea in a meeting with young congressman and it wasn't a very good idea and he dismissed it. >> after the scare primary the meeting moves on to florida after tomorrow's primary. the primary in florida take place january 31st. newt gingrich released his 2010 tax returns last night. they show he paid $994,000 in federal taxes on $3.1 million in income. during the debate mitt romney said he will release his 2011 tax returns when they are ready. probably sometime in april. rick santorum says he does his own taxes and he said he will release them when he gets back home. ron paul said he does not plan on releasing his taxes because he would be embarrassed to put his income up against the other candidates. mayor quan is not escaping

political -- why these protestors trapped mayor quan inside a taxicab as she was leaving that conference. just be aware the roads are wet. be careful. >> that is right. slow it down. you will be cited if you are driving unsafe under the conditions. let's go outside and take a look at westbound bay bridge coming up to the toll plaza it looks pretty good. no major problems. the traffic does look good on the bridge into san francisco. this is a look at interstate 880. that traffic is moving along nicely. if you are driving in the south bay we don't have a lot going on when it comes to the maps. northbound 101, 280, 85 off to a good start. let's go steve. thank you. we already have rain. it's moving into san francisco. marin county. also peninsula south san francisco. if you don't have rain you might have fog, you might have mist and drizzle. this next system will be much stronger. there is nothing to stop it.

there goes yesterday's system. set the stage for the next one to come in. it will give us a very cloudy rainy day. some of the rain totals from yesterday not too bad. petaluma and santa rosa almost an inch of rain. as far as four tenths. oakland a quarter of an inch. after that it was much less. around san jose .03 to .05. live storm tracker two shows things already in the leading edge. the eastern edge is already move into the picture. we'll have a wet morning commute for some and no doubt about it for the evening. today's system much stronger. and now a lot of this is heading to the north. this will be a good one for us. cloudy and foggy with morning commute. rain developing already here. it will continue this afternoon. the wind has picked up as well. our computer model forecast shows some of the rain kind of hanging back. it's there. but watch how it really intensified by noon and 1:00 and continues throughout most of the day. if you're heading out tonight you will need the rain gear

down loads of copyrighted materials including music and movies. that cost the copyright holders a loss of half a billion in revenue. the activist group anonymous says it took down the department of justice and two music industry websites in retaliation. the department of justice says it's treating it as a malicious act and being investigated. jean quan is being dogged by occupy protestors even though she has been on the other side of the country. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom with her encounter in the mayor's conference in washington. alison. >> reporter: the nation's mayors have been meeting here in d.c. all weekend. many have been confronted by the occupy protestors. one of the most dramatic scenes involved mayor quan. this is a video posted on one of the occupy websites and on

youtube this morning. you can see the protestors surrounding mayor quan's cab as she left the mayor's meeting. the protestors stopped her cab for a minute and a half. one of them was arrested after a scuffle with police. we talked to mayor quan before the incident. she said she was in d.c. asking for more federal investments. >> i have a lot of unemployed young people. when the congresswoman needs a job program. that was painful. >> reporter: we are reached out to the mayor's office to try top get reaction to the understand accident but have -- reaction to the incident but have not heard back yet. there are reports out of iran that that the number of people injured by an earthquake there has increased by 230. now a report on iran's state tv says 30 of the people injured in that magnitude 5.5 quake were hospitalized while the

others were treated for minor injuries and released. no deaths have been reported at this point. the earthquake hit yesterday in a city of about 550 miles northeast ofty ran. in a couple hours the union city woman accused of killing nursing student michelle le is dew back in an east bay courtroom. they are going to charge test ban of killing her former friend. police arrested esteban in september. ten days before miss le's remains were found in a remote area of sunol. trial of a suspect the gang member -- suspected gang member -- they were shot in their car while driving home from a

picnic. prosecutors say ramos mistook one of the sons for a rival gang member. california received mixed grades. the state's 87-cent cigarette tax earned a d grade. becausements national average for cigarette tax is $1.46 per pack. california did earn an a for smoke free air policies. san jose earned a c for overall tobacco policies. san francisco and oakland earned b's. 6:17. sal, everyone behaving on the east shore? driving is tricky this morning. >> it is tricky. the best thing to do would be to leave the house early if you can. just because stopping distances are greater and people will be driving a little more slowly than they normally do. you need an extra few minutes. let's go out to the east shore freeway. we do have traffic that hat been a little slow this morning on parts of the east shore

freeway. also if you are driving to the toll plaza of the bay bridge you will see traffic. we get lucky because on friday's some people don't go or go later. just the commute to volume is a little down. that will help us out. this is a look at the livermore- castro valley. a lot of grown you like seeing that. you see a lot of green that means the speeds are up pretty much. there could be something on the san mateo bridge that just popped up. and on the peninsula still 101 looks good. finding out about airport arrival delays for san francisco airport. we'll check those out. it could be significant today because of the weather. in san jose the roads look pretty good. already slowing in the mountains because of the storm. the weather has not reached the south bay so much but it will. is that right? >> that is correct. we already have some moving in it and it will continue

throughout the day. this is a much stronger system. there is yesterday's system. here comes the next one right there. it's already spreading in. there is more to come throughout the day. live storm tracker two you can get out of the way. focusing on marin county and san francisco. and the peninsula that is what is sweeping over us. it's all there. and it's coming in. everything is saturated from yesterday's system. this system is stronger by the way. the wind is also picked up as well. i'm about a half inch to two plus inches of rain out of this system. cloudy skies if you don't have cloudy skies there will be rain. if you're heading to the mountains snow level goes way up. storm it will drop. but that winter storm warning doesn't start until 7:00 p.m. today. 50s on the temps. a really mild system. we will get a break saturday

afternoon. sunday afternoon a break. monday we'll clear it out. tuesday dry. intel -- in a pc market that was being pinched by a weak economy. despite that revenue was up 21% to nearly $14 billion. earnings hit $3.3 billion which is up from the same time last year. intel stock looking to trade slightly higher this morning. ibm also beat fourth quarter forecasts. and now they are promising annual earnings growth of 10%. corporate decision makers seem to be shocking off their worries about consumer growth. our time is 6:21. the manager of a san jose bar says a doll on display is part of the decoration. however, the south bay civil rights group says it's offensive. they want it taken down. if you're heading to the

it. a doll is creating quite a controversy. the doll hangs from a ceiling of the old saloon and grill. it's part of the old west theme. but the president of the silicon valley naacp says the hanging doll and noose are offensive and need to come down because they represent hatred in the deep south. the bar manager says the doll is supposed to be the bar owner. >> i think we need to pull it down. that is something we will consider. >> if not we will see what kind of steps we need to take. >> reverend moore says if the doll is not removed he will call for a boycott of the bar. 6:26. a san francisco dj and bicyclist seriously injured in the hit and run accident is still in intensive care this morning. a car hit christopher evans

last week at ocean and geneva avenues. the car left the scene. since that accident evans has been in the hospital. friends and family of evans is now organizing several fundraisers to help him out. the mayors of san francisco and new york they have made the traditional bet on who is going o win the nfc championship game and breweries are also getting in on the action. san francisco's anchor brewery company and new york brooklyn brewery have agreed to a friendly bet. the losing town's brewery will have to pour the other town's beer for a whole week. and then they have to wear the winning team's jersey. 6:27. we have developing news from san francisco's financial district. our pictures are live. you can see there are people gathered out there. a day long occupy protest is just now happening in pretty

market. we'll smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here. it is friday, january 20th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. time now is 6:30. topping our news protestors are gathering at the goldman sacks billing in san francisco. the first of several planned occupied protests today in the district. it will be the city's biggest demonstration in years. claudine wong is there to tell us what is happening. >> reporter: protestors have begun to gather out here. a few of them holding up signs. the plan is to have a lot of people dress as this woman. like a squid. in reference to a rolling stone.com article in which goldman sacks was described as a great vampire squid. wrapped around the face of humanity. so that is the theme this morning at 6:00 a.m.  on the plaza. not a huge group of protestors

just yet. i want to take you over to the other side of the plaza where you can see san francisco police also begun to gather on this side. just keeping an eye out for things. this is just getting started. this is expected to be a long day of protests in and around the financial district. i want to give you a live look at justin herman plaza. we have a small group of people gathering down there as well. justin herman plaza is expected to be a spot where protestors are going to use kind of as a main rally site. we expect the protests down there throughout the day and at noon and again at 5:00 p.m.. back out here live at 555 california here at the goldman sacks building. if you take a look at the security in place in preparation for the day, you can see they have barricades up. security taking employees into here through one particular entrance so they can keep an eye on things. things very calm right now as just a few protestors out here

today. this is just the beginning of what is supposed to be a long day in the financial district. live here in san francisco claudine wong. 6:32. police in hayward were busy during the night responding to several drunk driving related crashes. ktvu alex savidge is in the neighborhood where one speeding driver caused a lot of damage. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, to you, dave. this suspected drunk driver left a trail of damage. police say he was speeding on this residential street going at least 70 miles an hour. and then slammed into three parked cars. this one among them. this bmw the front end smashed in and the car has been totaled. this happened around 2:00 this morning. this is video you'll only see on two. police say the man who caused all this damage ran off after the crash and was arrested a few blocks away. neighbors woke up when they heard what sounded like an explosion. >> boom and it sounded like something got hit really hard.

my husband got up and ran outside and they were just totally smashed in front of our house. we called 911 scene out they came. >> reporter: police say they started getting 911 calls about this suspected drunk driver after he took out a street sign and kept going. there was a parked limo that had a bumper knocked off. the driver is not facing life threatening injuries. he is facing charges of dui and hit and run. hayward police told me earlier on this particular crash on bishop avenue was one of three dui related accidents they handled overnight. live this morning in hayward alex savidge. 6:34. we just got word muni successfully removed that suv. the one that drove into one of the under ground tunnels. we showed you all of this during yesterday's morning on two. the driver drove down the

tunnel and crashed into a platform. now 40-year-old scott mitchell was later arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. muni was able to push the suv off to the side of the tracks. they were able to remove it during the overnight hours so work would not interview with muni service. the 49ers are preparing to host the new york giants in sunday's nfc championship game. crews say the field is in good shape because of the dry weather throughout the regular season. the field should be able to soak up any rain without getting slick. the nfc logo and lines were all painted on wednesday and the field has been covered with a tarp. stay with us at ktvu channel 2 morning news. just ahead at 6:45 we're going to go live to san francisco with more on how the fans are getting ready for the big game. >> is sal ready? he's got to be ready. >> is sal ready? >> i'm ready.

last week i lost my voice for about 24 hours but then i got it back. >> you have a job where you need your voice. >> i know. which shows you sometimes i can make decisions that are not the best. let's take a look at the commute now. the traffic -- maybe i will cheer in sign language. any way. look at highway 4. see earlier we could see the whole thing and now looks like some of the clouds are taking up our view. the wet weather will be effecting traffic this morning. visibility too. let's get a look at the other traffic. it's not busy. this will help us out because on a thursday or wednesday we would see much more traffic. today just a little lighter. if you're driving in the santa cruz mountains if you are a santa cruz driver. we also ha a crash. i want to move the maps to -- let's go a little farther

move on shore and it's only going to pick up. this is our system that is coming in right there and then today's rain will be one more sunday evening yes sunday evening into monday morning. the one coming in now is a stronger system. if you don't have any rain yet it's a cloudy drizzly morning. much stronger system. this is our computer model forecast. you can see that rain in ma rain county or a little bit in the north bay. watch what happens here. by noon here comes the system in all its glory. by 5:00 rain spreading out across the area. there is the front. when you see the red that is very intense. just so you know plan ahead. it will go until about midnight and start to clear out of here. there could be a few light showers around tomorrow morning but sat looks good. we'll get a break. rain totals will be much more impressive with this system. anywhere between 1-2 plus in many locations. system though looks pretty good. most of it is driving north. shelter cove yesterday by the

in this race. chris. >> reporter: good morning, dave. you are right. south carolina is a very, very important state. mitt romney may have thought he had this locked up. but you know what he may be waking up facing an entirely different story. you mentioned the drama that has happened in the last 24 hours. that was the case. yesterday we saw rick perry drop out of this case. there is four candidates left. also yesterday we saw the results change from a previous caucus. iowa the first in the nation state is now going to rick santorum. we had thought for a couple weeks now that mitt romney had had that locked up with eight votes. a very slim lead. turns out rick santorum came out ahead there. rick santorum one, mitt romney one, and now heading into south carolina a state that mitt romney had been in the lead. his lead is very, very slim. just a few points. some polls have put newt gingrich ahead of mitt romney. this is an entirely different

welcome back. here's a quick look at the top stories we are following for you right now at 6:43. protestors in san francisco gathering now at the goldman sacks building at the first of several planned occupy protests today in the financial district. it's dark out there but they are gathering out there. organizers say it will be the city's largest demonstration in years. we're not sure how today's rainy and stormy weather will effect the protest. there is jean quan. she was targeted by occupy protestors in washington, d.c. as she attended a conference of mayor's conference in washington. the protestors surrounded her cab. the protestors say they were showing their opposition to the treatment of occupy protestors in oakland. a suspected drunk driver is

in jail after crashing into several cars in hayward during the night. police say he was going about 70 miles an hour. now he ran from his car but police arrested him a short time later. we are now just two days away from the niners verses the giants at the stick. and it is the team's first nfc championship game since 1998. tara moriarty joins us now from san francisco with why some fans are actually finding it difficult to get into the niner spirit. tara. >> reporter: well, you know today is red and gold day. a lot of schools and workplaces but we have been hard pressed to find 49er gear around san francisco. we talk to the 49ers yesterday. they have no official store. you have to go online. but with the clock ticking a lot of fans say they resorting to their old 49er gear. 49er fever is sweeping through the bay area. we found a lifelong 49er fan that makes novelty hats.

they have been popping up at candle stick park. now the creator of the soft foam hats cannot keep up with the demand. he dreamt up the hat two years ago as a way to rally around a team in the dumps. >> i said wait a minute. what if you just had a big gold nugget on your head [ laughter ] and then 49 our gold rush. and then i said oh wait a minute we can call it. it's on your head it's a noggen nugget. good. this system there is nothing to stop it. it's already moving right in. the heavier amounts were up in mendocino county and lake county. today looks like it's taking more aim. marin county. san francisco. right over into the east bay and peninsula. along the san mateo coast. south bay will have to wait a little bit. this is a much better system. it has lot of moisture associated with it. the wind has cranked up as well. we have a lot of wind going for it. the atmosphere is already saturated. if you don't have rain, then it's cloudy. there are areas of fog for the morning commute. the rain has developed. again very windy conditions. our computer model forecast picks up the intensity later on. this is really light stuff right now. watch what happens after the noon hour. evening commute looks dicey to me. that is tonight. that is 8:00. 9:00, 10:00. that is when the front will go through. that will be moderate to heavy rain. most of saturday should be

abducted from the south bay. officials say her name is taylor vogue. she is asian. about 5'3", weighing about 100 pounds. the suspect is ty lee a 42-year- old asian man described as 5'6" weighing 170 pounds. he was last seen driving a dark mini van with an unknown license plate. we'll give you an update coming up in a couple minutes. new this morning france just suspended its training operations in afghanistan. and they may pull out its entire force after a gunman wearing an afghan army uniform shot and killed four french troops today. that attack is a second time this month an afghan soldier has killed french troops. today's attack happened during a training exercise by a base
