bailouts. >> reporter: especially now when the economic recovery is well underway and the political season is heating up. >> the politicians have already -- including the democrats put some real distance between themselves and some of the protest activities. >> reporter: now what are you looking at is the corner of california and montgomery. this is one of the main after work routes that's going on. montgomery for a block is blocked off and what that means of course is that all of this other stuff is going on where traffic is guided away and apart and aside from where it needs to be going. as a result you have a lot of protesting going on and a lot of congestion that makes is more frustrating for those who have to put up with it. this is the situation you with see at california and montgomery. one of the main intersections of the financial district and if the point of the protest was to disrupt the financial

district they have done a good job of it and that is the situation as we see it right now. reporting live, ktvu channel 2news. >> now there are at least three protests going on including one not far from where tom is at the hyatt on union square on stockton. jade hernandez is there. what's going? >> reporter: we are live at the grand hyatt. we can show you right now that the cold, rain, strong winds have not deterred these protesters. you can see there is at least a couple hundreds. they have bags they can have been loud, out here for a good couple hours. right now protesters are in front of the hotel because -- right here local 2 has had issue was wages and what they call unfair work practices for employees. julia wong joins us now. tells us why occupy sf is going

in on this issue. thank you for joining us. tell me real quickly why protesters are out here for the hotel. >> i am from united care local 2 the hotel worker's union, the workers at the hyatt and -- have been without a contract for two and a half years. hyatt is the most abusive employer in the country. >> occupy wall street -- joining here today how does it make you feel to see so many? >> it's fantastic. i mean there is so much support between occupy movement and the labor movement and we all have one message. corporations aren't people. the hyatt doesn't make the beds, cook the food. >> reporter: she is wearing a anymore tag that says my name is the 99%. that's really the message out here right now. i can tell you julia mentioned

earlier that around 5:15 or so the demonstrators will move. we will walk with them and be along the route of the march. you can check back in about 30 minutes. reporting live. jade hernandez. >> in san francisco the plaza was home to the caml for weeks. right now hundreds of protesters are gathering there again. let's go head and bring in david stevenson live where the group said it doesn't need tents to get the point across. >> reporter: it's a different scene than what quaid is experienced right now. it's very quiet. there are a couple hundred people who have gathered here. take a look. you see a flash mob performance that's going on. you can see people holing up science, 99% plus 1% equals 100%. another says housing a human right this was the scene of a camp for a number of weeks, and you can seat people getting roused right now.

this will be the sight where people are rallying and marching soon from the plaza. they say the plan is to take over a foreclosed widing to make a stance and make a point about the need for affordable housing. now again a couple hundred people have gathered here. we are told this represents about 50 different group, all united to make a point about economic inequality here in san francisco and around the criminal again they are gathering right now. number of different groups, listening to music, you can see the performance starts and they are set to start marching with in the hour along the financial district. that's the scene right now. we will be here through the hour and will keep you informed. for now reporting live. david stevenson. >> occupy protest started early this morning in san francisco's financial district and quickly became

confrontational. a crowd of occupiers overwhelmed police in front of the goldman sarh's building and a few lashed out at officers. another group chained themselves to the doors of the wells fargo bank headquarters. they were asked to move because it was a safety hazard to have all the entrances blocked. >> we will not move. wells fargo is evicting residents, they are taking people's money, they have helped trash the economy and we are here to say it has to end. >> reporter: police moved in and arrested about a dozen people for trespassing. >> occupy protesters also marched today outside the federal courthouse in oakland. the group gathered outside the federal building on clay street. they are protesting the landmark united states supreme court rule that removed most limits on corporate spending in federal elections. >> look at the inability of the political system to deal with the real problem that the

country is facing, the game playing, they are taking care of the 1%, they are very responsive to the 1%. the rest of us don't even count. >> reporter: there were occupy the court protests in other cities across the country as well including at the federal court building in san francisco and in san jose. once again here we have a team of reporters covering this day of protests and the situation is developing as we speak we will continue to show you live pictures of the situation and the impact on the evening drive throughout this newscast and at six. >> we are on storm watch tonight as rain is coming down all round the bay area. our live team coverage start was bill martin tracking the wet weather. >> yeah. rain in the bay area today. overnight. the morning was wet. we go outside and most of the major cities had wet pavement. here in oakland, heaviest rainfall showing up in the north bay, san francisco you

had your dose of rain up to a half inch. that definitely made for a slow drive for the morning. as we go through the next few hours more rain in the forecast actually significantly more rain. in the last 24 hours millville lay had over two and a half inches of rain. that's a lot of rain in a 24 hour period. more falling right now. the radar sweep on. starting to see yellows pop up this is out front of the front this is prefrontal stuff. the showers on the heart of this afternoon drive are going to slowly increase. by the time we get to the -- eight, nine, ten period it'll becoming down. we will see strong winds and increased rainfall in those hours. the afternoon drive is wet. the late evening -- the early evening drive will be wet and -- it'll really get going. it's raining pretty hard. on 680 toward fairfield.

have you yellows showing up. wet roadways for everybody. the bridges wet. no wind but as we go into tonight the win wills pick up. a -- not a major giant storm but a second in a series and twice as strong as the one we just saw, maybe three times as strong. i will give you all the specifics on the next weather system and how it'll impact your day on saturday. >> as bill said the north bay has felt the bunt that have storm and john fowler is in the marin head lands. >> reporter: just right on que as bill is saying the winds are picking up and just in the last few seconds we have had gusts of 25, maybe 30 miles an hour here. we are also getting a bit more rain in the last 90 minutes, it's picked up just as bill said with the storm tracker, you can see that band moving toward us. we are feeling right here. let me show you highway 101 and highway 1 on the golden gate bridge. the traffic is still moving

well there. are traffic problems at several crashes up on 101. highway 1 at panoramic is -- has been slide closed. for most people this -- rain is actually good news. it's especially good news for water users who get three quarters of drinking water from run off. >> it's a good thing to have more water. >> reporter: good indeed after two months with no precipitation rain is now filling area that have fallen to the lowest in years. >> january is usually the wettest month and december the second wettest. we are happy to see it today. >> reporter: tides were low after midmorning when the first storm hit. standing water and freeway flooding were light and in the usual low spots. still driving in the first storm of the season takes getting used to. >> deep breathing.

. continuing coverage on the day of occupy protest. several going on at the same time as we speak in san francisco. want to show you pictures, a huge crowd at justin herman plaza. the plan is to march in the next couple minutes to a foreclosed building in the financial district. we just lot of the picture. there are a couple of other protests going on. one is outside the hyatt at union square and there are traffic problems along stockton street. another protest is going on outside a bank at montgomery and california. that is a key area for the evening drive and one lane of montgomery is closed as a result of that protest. we have a team of reporters covering the story for you and will continue to update you on the situation throughout the

newscast. >> an 11 11-year-old is now safe after an amber alert. she was force from her home at gun point. >> reporter: the girl is at the hospital being checked out. she doesn't have any life threatening injuries. she was kidnap from this home onto eastside. her uncle said on the phone a short while ago while they are shaken they are relieved. police surrounded this home after they received a call just before 1:30 that a man broke in. >> a man holding a gun to my dad's head. he was making his way upstairs and asking for my sister. when he couldn't find her he took my neice. >> reporter: the man fired a hand gun and kidnapped the 11- year-old. he is the ex-boyfriend of the

girl's mother. detectives worked tracking him down. they were worried because he has a criminal record including domestic violence. they found him at an apartment around noon. >> he appeared in a window with the victim. he was holing her as a hostage. he was armed a gun. >> reporter: officers were hoping to negotiate a peaceful surrender end but it didn't happen. >> he opened fire and one of the officers took a shot at him and hit him and the suspect has been pronounced dead. >> reporter: authorities are not saying why he went to the apartment but records show he lives there. the neighborhood was roped off the entire afternoon as investigators moved in to collect evidence. the girl was taken away by swat officers. >> she has been through a lot. i can't imagine what it would be like to be in her shoes. >> reporter: right now the family is asking for privacy to heal from this ordeal.

the little girl's uncle did say that they are still waiting to see what her injuries or if she has any. they just want their privacy respected at this point. >> snow falling in the sierra and a lot more could fall. we are live in blue canyon. >> reporter: and here at -- mother nature is throwing us a curve ball. we are dealing with a very cold rain and as you look around i can tell you at 10:00 10:00 it was covered in snow. tonight they are expecting another two feet of snow at higher elevations and we saw how a fresh layer of powder is changing things for resort that haven't seen significant snow since november.

it's finally starting to look like winter in the sierra. six to eight inches overnight brought bay area snow loafers out. >> we started having storms down there. we were like probably going to be snowing up here, may as welcome up and get some riding in. >> reporter: what do you think of the snow? >> it's great. pretty good. its been a long wait. >> reporter: on this chair lift road brenden told us how the lack of snow got him laid off at a ski shop. >> we were getting like 15 rentals a day. it's normly a couple hundred. . >> reporter: just how badly needed is all this snow? consider how much they have had to make. a record 40 million gallons this season. at sugar bowl there is a base of just 12 to 15 inches of mostly man made snow. with the promise ofa another storm tonight everybody here hopes their luck is about to change. >> we are hoping it'll be a

strongest part around eight, nine, ten tonight. as we look -- through the last 24 hours you can see the rainfall accumulations, two and a half inches, about a half inch in oakland. santa rosa, these are not massive rainfall totals. this next weather system that's coming in will bring about twice as much rain. just double the numbers narcotic will give you the idea of what you are looking at. winds will increase as well. overnight lows in the 40s, maybe low 50s. you saw the -- some of the rain coming down. definitely coming up, this is a warm midlatitude storm. the cloud from a lower area, they are warmer full of moisture. maybe higher snow levels but a lot of water content and a lot more rain from the systems than if they were coming further north this is the system i'm tracking as we head in sunday. here is how it breaks down. asset front there.

>> reporter: that's rightw. have been watching the demonstrators for a few hours and as you can tell, we are following the crowd. we are just walk agriculture long with them because we have been -- in front of the grand hyatt since about 5:00 and right here at local 2 was here because of a protest against employees working without a contract. that is a status they have been under for about two years and it's part of the reason why they joined the movement. we followed occupy supports all day with participants showing frustration over immigration laws and -- foreclosures, and labor issues like the one employees at the grand hyatt have experienced. i want you to listen to what one told us earlier. >> i think -- it's a system we are in has to change. we have to respect the people and -- a lot more than what we are doing right now.

neighborhood. >> san francisco sheriff will know more after this weekend about the case against him. expects say the case may ride or fall depending on the evidence prosecutors can offer. david stevenson spoke with the da today. >> reporter: san francisco sheriff will leash on monday when his trial will start. he was arraigned yesterday on three charges relating to a altercation with his wife that left a bruise on her arm. they both deny there was any abuse. >> the society we have moved away from the concept of this is a private matter. >> reporter: the da today declined to speak specifically on the case. he said prosecutors generally have other options. when an alleged victim refuses to cooperate. >> we will look at prior statements. perhaps statement that a victim made previously that may be opposite to what they are

saying today. we are looking at what witnesses telling us. >> reporter: a prosecutor read some of lopez's prior statements at the thursday afternoon arraignment. texts she sent to a neighbor who later called police indicated she wanted to change the locks after the altercation and wanted to know if police would arrest him if she filed a complaint. >> she gets up there and testifies no, for the defense, no he did nothing to me. now the door is open for those prior statements to be used both to impeach her and for authority truth. >> reporter: the neighbor videotaped lopez. the tape is mostly hearsay making hard to be admitted. >> the videotape is only relevant if he did it. it doesn't mean much. her having the bruise on her arm and who will -- where is the information that did it going to come from? >> reporter: the sheriff's attorney didn't return our calls for comment today. in san francisco, david

in the financial district. earlier today we have been souling you picture of people arrested who refused to leave the front of the bank. it appears this may be the same situation. protesters lined up against the windows together. at this point we have heard as many as 18 arrests have taken place today. this is part of a day of mass civil disobedience as they calledt. hundreds of people involved here in the financial district. we will watch it and bring you the latest throughout this newscast and at six. >> across town in san francisco, dozens of nurses were out today protesting plans to down size the hospital. demonstrators held signs in front of the hotel where sutter health plans to move many of the saint luke resources for a larger hospital. nurses said the change will hurt patients who go to saint

luke's. >> it's an under served part of town south of market. they are getting less benefits to start with . >> they today said sutter health plans to cut down the number of beds at saint luke's to 80. >> britain is admitting used a fake rock to spy on russia. it was planted in moscow and hid a communications device. when it was reversed in 2006 the president used to crack down on foreign groups he considered fronts for spying. a group said it was a headache and fueled indict trust between them. >> new research suggests children with low levels of vitamin d may be at a higher risk of depression. the study looked at more than 2700 children between nine and 13. it found kid was the lowest levels of vitamin d were more likely to show signs of depression while kid was higher levels were more likely to have

we don't have pictures of him but it's still incredible. a neighbor saw him playing on it and told official was the ravens. he told nfl total access that he had never been on one before and only rode it for about ten feet down the driveway but got a call from the general manager probably telling him don't do it again. they play new england in the afc championship game on sunday. >> all round the bay area we are seeing the rain that bill talked to us about. a lot more today than yesterday. >> yeah. more rain. it's happening right now the heaviest rain. i said you were back here a few minutes ago, a lot of green and yellow here with . moderate to heavy rainfall over san rafael this is all going to drive south and as we get in to the early evening hours, eight, nine action, ten the front will start to move through.

the heaviest rain will start to come. you are getting hit with significant rainfall as you go outside it's a wet one on the friday afternoon drive. scattered showers overnight and tomorrow we have a little bit of a break. scattered showers and clouds but just -- not quite as consistent on the rainfall. the rain forecast and you can see almost double what we had today. over two and a half inches in the coastal hill. maybe two in saba rosa. inch and a quarter in san francisco. here is how it breaks down. the system in the pacific. this is the sunday, this is the one that could impact or -- should i say will impact the championship game. a few morning showers saturday, as this goes through. we get a little bitl break but it's cloudy, it's not sunny. little break, get out and throw the ball around. then sunday the clouds increase in the admonishing morning and by midmorning, early afternoon sprinkles. by the ball game i suspect scattered showers, right through the most of the game. certainly in the third and 4th quarter of the game.
