7:13 am
7:15 am
good morning for you! a live look there, ski resorts. we've got snow falling this morning and advisories in place for the sierra through at least the afternoon. at least eight inches of snow is expected in chicago. if people are fearing another snowmageddon. this is lakeshore drive along lake michigan. yelled city officials began plowing that road and detouring buses off the icy streets. they say last year hundreds of cars got trapped on the busy road when 20 inches of snow fell on the city. creating what residents called snowmageddon. after school activities were also closed. the students could make it home before the storm. right now there are still minor delays in and out of chicago airport. the snow cancelled hundreds of flights yesterday, more than
7:16 am
300 flights were cancelled out of o'hare. and 70 flights were canned out of midway, which accounts for 15% of its traffic. this morning delays up to 15 minutes are being reported for arrivals and departures, and flights to philadelphia are delayed for almost two hours. so far, there are no weather- related delays at any bay area airports. primary day in south carolina with a face-off between mitt romney and newt gingrich. both candidates are scheduled to be at the same greenville, south carolina barbeque restaurant in just about 30 minutes. romney's campaign is calling the dual events a coincidence. newt gingrich's campaign says the former house speaker released his schedule first and is happy to have romney at his event. despite the four-man race in south carolina, stephen colbert is in the state testing the waters for a possible
7:17 am
presidential campaign. he is asking people who want to support him to vote instead for former g.o.p. candidate herman cain. cain is still on the ballot. >> he's a man with ideas, a man with convictions, a man with a -- bust with his face on it. gandhi didn't have that. i want you to vote for herman cain because herman cain is hee. >> but cain says he doesn't want people in south carolina to vote for him today because it would be a waste of a vote. chuck norris is sounding off on who he wants to see in the white house. the martial arts star says he is endorsing newt gingrich. norris says he believes the former house speaker has the best chance of beating president obama in november. again it's primary day in south carolina, and it's appearing to be a two-man race between mitt romney and newt gingrich. john roberts is live this
7:18 am
morning from charleston with a look at what to expect today and good morning to you, john. >> reporter: good morning to you too. just a little update four. train wrecked it was supposed to has been, mitt romney showed up early. he spoke to the crowd there for a few minutes. looks like he's on his way out now. i think he's just about ready to leave. newt gingrich expected to arrive in about 20 minutes' time or so. so that conflict that we were expecting here on primary day in south carolina appears to have been avoided because mitt romney came early. i'll tell you, south carolina is a real indication that the only thing that counts is election day. this time last week, not many people are would have said newt gingrich was going to win here today. many people are saying he could probably pull it out of his hat. the problem for newt gingrich is that according to the latest public policy poll, 35% of people who say they support him also say they may switch their vote to someone else. and who night that be? mitt romney or rick santorum?
7:19 am
many people who support newt gingrich have a second choice of rick santorum so we'll see how that goes. what to watch for today is a results come in. let's put up a map of south carolina. this is congressional districts. you see the first and second districts on the coast, and reaches up into columbia. that is territory that mitt romney should do very well in. but newt gingrich is competing very heavily here. it may not be like it was in 2008, when john mccain won all of that and then mike huckaby won the upstate. but the real places to watch are the third and fourth districts, screen greenville and york county, a suburban of charlotte, north carl. if mitt romney cannot repeat what john mccain did there in 2008, get about 24 or 25% of the vote, his road to victory here in south carolina is going to be difficult. another big question -- what about the military vote? in 2008, because of his record as a veteran, much of that
7:20 am
military vote went to john mccain. but that military vote is being vied for by at least three and maybe all four candidates. ron paul appears to anti-war sentiments and among veterans, and there are 400,000 of those veterans here in south carolina. and newt gingrich and mitt romney both aggressively courting the military vote. so likely if that vote could split this year as opposed it going en masse one way. so those are all things that we're going to be watching for here in south carolina. but the one thing you got to keep in mind here, what looked like a sure bet for mitt romney just five days ago really is the tightest of tight races between gingrich and romney. i talked with a strategist. he said this will be a tight race, really the only hope that mitt romney has to win this is if the momentum that newt gingrich built up over the last few days stalls out. and so far, there's no indication of that. back to you. >> no doubt newt gingrich making a push in south carolina. john roberts, thank you for
7:21 am
that report. president obama is promoting tourism, and this weekend's online video address. >> we're going to ex panel the number of countries where visitors can get cleared by homeland security so they don't need a tourist visa. and we're going to speed up visa processing for countries are growing middle classes that can afford to visit america. countries like china and brazil. we want more visitors. >> the president also went on to ask americans to tune in to his state of the union address scheduled for this tuesday. the search continues this weekend. for the 21 passengers still missing after the concordia disaster. one week has passed since the cruise hit is hit a reef in italy, causing it to overturn. rescue officials say the ship continues to move about a half inch per hour, possibly because the ship is slipping off the reef. as a result, search crews are staying above the water. the coast guard will decide when driving operations can resume. the los angeles coroner has identified the man whose dismembered head, hands and
7:22 am
feet were found near the iconic hollywood sign. he's a 66-year-old former mexicana airlines employee. los angeles police searched an apartment building in connection with the investigation on thursday night. people who live there say they saw police pulling at least one car from the building when that search was conducted. >> really frightening that it's this close to my house. i live right next door. like i said, i don't know -- we don't know what is going on yet. >> the building complex is located about two miles south of the park where the body parts were found. the head was found tuesday by a dog walker, and police searchers turned the his hands and feet. no arrests have been made. thousands of people in seattle are still without power this morning after a number of storms pound that region and it could still be awhile before that power comes back on. and wind storms are causing a sandy mess on the oregon coast. look at that. why one resident says they won't, digging out any time soon. >> it's the morning after, and this storm now winding down.

people in oregon are digging sand out of their homes just as they brace for a new set of windstorms headed their way beginning wednesday, 70- mile-an-hour wind gusts hit the area of waldport along the oregon coast. residents there say the wind was strong enough to pushed sand right up against their doors and windows. >> the dog and i just laid in bed, and i said this is the safest place. and the wall was pushing my head, and it had -- it was going in and out the winds were so strong. >> and those strong winds are expected to continue through the weekend. the cause of a building collapse in western washington is now under investigation. firefighters say three employees were in that building which belongs to an ice making company. they say the employees heard loud noises and cracking sounds
7:26 am
and were able to run outside before the collapse. everyone made it out safely and no injuries were reported. firefighters say there's been a large fall in the weight of the snow on the roof could have caused it to give way. in other parts of western washington, thousands are facing a weekend without power. puget sound energy says there are about a quarter million people in seattle, tacoma and olympia without power. snow, wind and ice responsible for bringing down numerous trees and power lines. crews are hoping to have power restored by early next week. speaking of snow, good to see up in the sierra finally snow making its way south into california. let's check in with rosemary on the forecast here in the by area. >> yes, good morning to you! i was just checking the ski resorts. heavenly a new foot of snow. take a look at that! winter wonderland. it is going to be snowy there for the first half of the day. and we do have advisories in place if you are headed to the sierra so make sure you check those roadways. we picked up quite a bit of
7:27 am
rain here, six inches falling over parts of santa cruz mountains in the last 24 hours. two nfl inches over napa, santa rosa, and looks like almost 2 1/2 in kentfield. almost an inch near oakland. so quite a bit of rain. we were really feeling it and the winds still breezy this morning. we will continue to watch those showers just taper off, lighten up throughout the day, then we'll be dry for the most part by saturday afternoon. sunday, though, the next system comes in. by the morning hours light showers in the forecast, and the 49er forecast looks like it's going to be pretty soggy. could even be a little breezy. afternoon highs expected for today, 57 for oakland, 58 in hayward. 59 mountain view. so may actually be a nice day to get outdoors at least for the afternoon. spend some time. 56 degrees will be the average through the weekend. you can see it afternoon highs tomorrow morning if we wake up with partly cloudy skies,
7:28 am
before the showers arrive we could be a little cooler. drying out by monday afternoon. and we're looking pretty dry tuesday and wednesday. back to you. a light rain continues to fall in mill valley and making clean-up tougher. the first storms of season have already caused flooding there. and the sierra ski resorts welcoming as much of the snow as the storms will give them. tell you how these storms are changing the conditions in the tahoe area.
7:31 am
the clean-up is underway after a wet and windy night in the bay area. and at the same time, more weather is headed our way. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. we are on storm watch this morning as light rain continues to fall. overnight the storms caused flooding in the north day. with allie rasmus is live in mill valley where sandbags are still in place as residents wait for in next batch of storms to move in. >> reporter: along with the rain, the wind was a problem too. you can see it was strong enough to knock over trees and heavy planters like the one you see there. the winds is picking up. it's still moving around. we're on miller avenue in the middle of mill valley, and right now the only sign you can see out here that there was any flooding is this giant puddle.
7:32 am
but we look over, you can see some of the businesses have sandbags out. and this is the reason why. this is what the intersection of miller avenue and la goma looked like last night. you could see the water rushing through the street and hear it. the street was closed off to traffic for a while, as businesses put up floodgates and sandbags. mill valley police 3 firefighters were called out to help after rain and debris clogged up stormwater drains and flooded the streets. >> it was quick action from us and also the establishment owners, we were able to get the sandbags out and prevent any water from coming into the establishments. >> cars driving on highway 580 crashed into huge waves of water, and it led to some accidents. two cars were involved in an accident and chp had to shut down part of the highway for a while.
7:33 am
the storm also caused power outages in tiburon. a downed tree split a power pole in two. its branches were tangled up. this is near the intersection of paradise and trussel glen. 20 homes in that neighborhood are without power this morning. pg&e says they won't be able to get the power back on to the roads until 10:00 this morning because there's so much damage, crews have to restrain some power lines. back out here live, the front of one of two businesses here in mill valley that has problems with flooding. they had the sandbags out there and of course the concern is there's another round of storms on the way. so it's likely the sandbags will stay out there throughout the weekend. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the much-needed rain is a welcome sight for bay area dairy farms. yesterday we were out in soma county where workers say the rain came just in time. they say the cows drinking water reservoirs were filled up, and the grass got moisture preventing them from buying expensive feed. the wet weather is necessary for good business. >> which is so important for
