. gearing up for tomorrow's big game and the soggy challenge for crews today. stormy weather causes problems in the hills where part of a road collapsed. >> the race for the republican presidential nomination takes another turn and we're live in south carolina where newt gingrich pulls off a big upset.

>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. >> good evening everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. we're now less than 24 hours away from the nfc championship game between the san francisco 49ers and the new york giants and the fan excitement is building. ktvu's alex savidge is live at candlestick park where laf night's storm caused problems out there. >> reporter: heavy rain overnight flooded this section of the candlestick parking lot. city crews spent the day out work and they have within and to get rid of that standing water before tomorrow's big niners' game. >> part of the cjing lot looked like a lake after an overnight downpour. today a number of city crews pumped outstanding water before stands descend on the stadium tomorrow. >> lake candlestick, you sort of expect. it it's part of the culture here and we have learned to live with it. >> we're not surprised. >> reporter: on the eve of the nfc

championship game, we found quite a few devoted niner fans from across the country who have made the trip to san francisco. including tom mccartle, who is from new york of all places of he is not worried about giant fans giving them a hard time. >> i don't care what they say. [ laughter ] that is not my problem. they know who i am from day 1. >> reporter: of course, giants' fans are making their presence felt and many will be cheering on their field within the friendly confines of aces bar in san francisco. >> wet/dry, it's going to be a good game. giants are hot and niners deserve to be here. giants are going to win. >> reporter: the field at candlestick park has been covered with a tarp to keep it as dry as possible for the players, but fans in the stands are ready to get wet tomorrow. >> i have got my rain gear and i'm fully prepared. >> reporter: and with another round of storms moving in tomorrow, the city tells me that they will

have work crews onhand throughout date at candlestick park to deal with any flooding. live tonight in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. there is a storm developing offshore, but at least for most of your sunday we're not expecting major rain. update 8 forecasts from 7:00, showing you light to moderate rain showers tomorrow at 7:00. a closer look at candlestick, you can see the forecast model is not too aggressive with at least quite a bit of coverage, but still the cloud cover and some scattered rain showers and that will be in the forecast tomorrow for the nfc championship game. showers like off and on and i'm tracking another round of heavy rain that will be moving into the barbra. >> our coverage of the nfc

they say last night's rain may have caused a water main to break. the result early this morning a vacant hillside lot below the road gave way. >> the hillside just came tumbling down. >> i walked out the front door and said huh, that is unusual. you know? >> reporter: there used to be a road there? >> not used to be shrouding in trees. >> reporter: pg&e crews are working on getting the power lines back in service. >> we lost power for a little bit and then it came back on and they are doing their thing. >> reporter: for now, neighbors seemed more curious than worried. and east bay mud has the lights on and settled in to work for the night. no evacuations have been ordered, but i talk to a few residents who tell me that they are without running water. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2

news. in other parts the bay area certainly took a hit yesterday. where business owners had to take precautions against flooding. it's an upset in south carolina as newt gingrich and craig boswell is live in charleston, south carolina and everyone wants to know, craig, how did gingrich pull this off? >> reporter: ken, good evening to you. who would have predicted in a week ago with mitt romney in a double-digit lead here in south carolina. a couple of things happened. no. 1, newt gingrich' performance in two debates, monday night and thursday night. he has been building his campaign on the debates. he had strong performance on monday night in myrtle beach and this past thursday night in south carolina, where he just absolutely knocked that first question out of the park. many people believed he not only won the debate with that

answer to that question, but won south carolina and turns out that they were correct. ken. >> craig, the next stop is florida. a much different campaign territory than south carolina. so who has the advantage going into florida? >> reporter: the advantage going into florida appears to be mitt romney, with strongest organizations and deeper pockets. a more diverse republican electorate and this is more tailor-made for newt gingrich particularly in the north, but it's changed going forward into florida. because of the delegate count. fox news is projecting that newt gingrich will win 19 of the 25 delegates up for grabs here and puts him in second place behind mitt romney. so that dynamic has certainly changed. there are 50 delegates up for grabs in florida. so it's grog to be interesting to see what happens now in florida. vote there is the 31st of this month and already some of the

early voting in some of those counties is underway and other counties begin early voting tomorrow. this race moves forward now though florida, the sunshine state is going to be fun to watch and it's going to be interesting. all four candidates are moving forward. live in charleston, south carolina, craig boswell. >> craig, any chance of rick santorum dropping out? >> reporter: no. he says he is full force ahead. i heard that in his campaign speech tonight, so yeah, it doesn't look like anyone is gone from here. >> thank you, craig. president obama used his weekly address today to reiterate the white house push to make it easier for foreign travelers to visit the u.s.. >> we want more visitors coming here. we want them spending money here. it's good for our economy and it will help provide the boost more businesses need to grow and hire. >> the president is expected to touch on some of the same economic themes in his state of the union speech coming up next week. mr. obama says he will lay out a blueprint for how elected

leaders and everyday americans can create a better economy. we will bring you that state of the union speech live right hire tuesday at 6:00 p.m. on ktvu channel 2. in san francisco, they rallied to mark the 39th anniversary of roe v. wade. this afternoon tens of thousands of people marched down market street in the 8th annual walk for life. abortion rights protesters briefly stopped the walk, but police stepped in to pull them out of way. police detained at least one person, a pro-choice rally was held at justin herman plaza earlier in the day. a day of protests followed by a night occupying an abandoned san francisco hotel. and today police announced officers arrested 23 people. ktvu's christine christien kafton live in san

francisco. vandals targeted this dealership and you can see the broken glass and over there you can see the plywood. off-camera they told me that they are very frustrated and they say that the police told them this is simply the cost of doing business in san francisco. >> reporter: plywood sheets cover windows in front of the bentley dealership. occupiers began their protest before dawn. over the course of the day, police arrested 19 protesters. late in the afternoon the protesters left the financial district and marched to geary and van ness. that is when a small group of those protesters smashed the windows of the dealership. visitors to the dealership today told that the damage is in the tens of thousands of dollars. >> we saw the windows and we were attracted to that and wondered what happened and then we went in and looked at bentleys and they said it

happened last night. >> reporter: protest ers made their way into the vacant cathedral hotel. police arrested four before clearing the building out. this morning, crews welded doors shut. firefighters went from room to room inside looking for damage. >> last night some of the demonstrators opened up the hose lines inside the house lines and we're making sure they are all shut off and we have water in case we had a fire here, we would be able to protect the building and put out the fire. >> reporter: protesters tell kutv that they targeted the hotel because there are thousands of homeless in the city that could be housed in vacant buildings like the cathedral hotel. live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. there are numerous reports that former

penn state coach joe paterno is gravely little. paterno who was head football coach for 45 years and holds the all-time ncaa division i record for wins of his career came to an inglorious end in november when as we fired over his role in the sex abuse case that resulted in 52 counts of child molestation, charges against former assistant football coach jerry san juan. >> san francisco mayor ed lee is reportedly questioning whether ross mirkarimi should remain on the job as sheriff. according to the san francisco chronicle, lee says he plans to talk to mirkarimi soon about him possibly stepping down during his court proceed eggs. mq2amie has pled not guilty to domestic abuse against his wife, dissuading a witness and child endangerment. >> the first storm of the season sweat through the bay area and we'll tell you why

. down trees and power lines and flooded streets, parts of the bay area are drying out after last night's wet weather. as ktvu's allie rasmus explains many residents are keeping an eye on the next round ever storms heading our way. >> reporter: rainbows arched across the valley, a serene sight compared to last night's storm. you could see and hear the water rush through the streets. by 10:00 businesses at the

intersection of miller avenue and lane. >> the drains were backing up with severe runoff. >> it was scary with the trees moving around. >> reporter: in tiburon a downed tree split a power pole in two and near highway 101, the rain and high tide turned the park-and-ride into a concrete soup. the city of mill valley has spots like this where residents can get equipment to shovel their own sandbags. residents are warned not to let their guard down. another round of rain is on its way tomorrow. renee glazer has a creek running through her yard and she says arch last night's rain the t-looks normal. >> normally it's halfway up the retaining well. >> reporter:

over 3" in kentfield and over a inch in morgan hill. over the past 48 hours picking up nearly 7" of rain. 7" in the santa cruz mountains. first thing tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy skies. periods of light rain, temperatures in the 30s to the lower 40s. santa rosa around 3 and san francisco 46. san josi lower 40s at 42. so right now in satellite, you can see our old system moving out to the east. a bit of a break. we actually have a secondary wave developing that produces another low that will be happening tomorrow night into monday morning. for tomorrow, mostly cloudy skies. some off and on showers. as we take this sunday night into monday morning, the secondary low develops, fairly close to the bay area shoreline. with that heavy rain and we're

talking about 2:00 to 3:00 monday morning and gusty winds. the possibility of thunderstorms as well. so just want to plan and be ready for that monday morning commute because we'll have significant rain hitting the bay area road ways. our rain still translates to snow point ins with a winter storm watch that begins tomorrow afternoon, lasting into monday afternoon. snow falling, you can tack on another 1-2' and snow levels coming down to 4500'. i know we have been waiting for quite some time and more snowfall in the forecast. tomorrow, off an on rain showers out there. you can see the main focus is for the northern half of the bay area. as we take this into the afternoon, scattered showers and once again this is not extreme, significant rainfall, but still you will encounter some raindrops out there as we head into the afternoon hours. and temperatures for afternoon highs on the chilly side, mainly in the low to mid-50s. occasionally rain showers, san francisco at 54 and fremont, 55 and antioch in the lower 50s.
