a big rock slide caused authorities to yellow tag several homes in san francisco. tonight we've learned what the city plans to do about it. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. we're getting a close up look at that big landslide in san francisco. tons of boulders came crashing down about 9:30 this morning

along a small section of lombard street. ken wayne is live where we were allowed to go behind the caution tape. >> reporter: frank, we're on the backside of 240 lombard street. caltrans has cleaned up some of the mess. you can see a car that was smashed by some of the falling boulders that took out the rear window. you can see some of the boulders and debris that are still blocking this road. tonight muhammad nuru showed us the damage. large boulders tumbled down landing just feet from condominiums. three units are now yellow tabbed. >> if any boulder happens to slide or roll down and the building gets hit, those would be the most impacted. >> reporter: residents of the

building tell us they're not too worried about the potential. >> it's happened every year. this year it's getting one of the largest ones. it's not unusual. >> reporter: in the early 90s, a large slide undermined an apartment building. the building was eventually torn down. geologists and geo technicians are analyzing data and pictures they took today to come up with a plan to make sure the hill is safer. >> by tomorrow we should have another assessment as to whether we can allow for these two units to be occupated.

>> reporter: as a point of reference, coit tower then below you can see the boulders are still there. public works says they want to keep those boulders in place because they are afraid if they pull them out they may further destabilize this hill and more debris come could down. public works hopes to have some kind of a plan tomorrow to find out how to deal with this situation, ken wayne. more details now, we've learned that in 2001 the park telegraph complex sued san francisco over falling rocks. the building used the money for netting and fences. in 2008 they appealed for more help but the city said the measures already taken were not enough and they have not fulfilled their part of the settlement agreement. two people are dead tonight after their car spaed through a fremont intersection. the crash happened on fremont

boulevard at delaware drive just moments before police spotted what they called a suspicious vehicle. lloyd lacuesta is live at the scene where investigators are trying to figure out the victim's identities and why they may have been trying to get away from police. >> reporter: police are yet to release the names of a man and woman. now the victims car wound up in that creek you see behind me. neighbors recall hearing a big crash. we talked to one woman who asked that her face not be shown. >> i saw people jumping in the creek. there was a car down on the creek. a woman was just crying asking for help. >> reporter: police say it was a monte carlo who illegally drove to the intersection and was hit by a durango sending the car to the creek. the driver of the dodge went to the hospital. a man and woman in the pickup

truck was not hurt. but the driver of the monte carlo and a woman sitting next to him were killed. and a man and woman had to be pulled from the wreckage. cook took video of the accident shortly after it happened. >> it looks like he was from the neighbor. these two cars here, see how the one is facing the other one. >> reporter: shortly before the accident, a police officer responding to another call saw a suspicious car on delaware drive. when the officer made a u turn to check out the license plate, the monte carlo sped off. >> it is confirmed it's not a vehicle pursuit. and there was not an attempt to make an enforcement spot. >> reporter: this intersection opened up shortly after they pulled the bodies and the car out. live in fremont, lloyd

lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. a burglary suspect injured just last week while fleeing police has died. rajwaun watkins was in the car that struck another car. the other two suspects are being held on parol allegations. the crash also killed the 69- year-old man driving the second vehicle. we have new information tonight about next week's employee lay offs. mayor quan said they managed to reduce the number of cuts by restructures a number of departments. a final decision is expected at the end of the month. money problems are tripping up the oakland ballet, the company said today it's going to postpone the launch of its spring season because of a budget deficit. the oakland ballet is short $90,000 it hopes to reschedule performances as soon as possible. the ballet still plans to hold

its annual benefit galla on may fifth. now to the presidential campaign within the past hour came word that romney has released his income tax returns. romney reported an income of $21.7 million. his tax rate was just 13.9%. that's lower than the average american. according to romney it's because most of the income comes from capital gains on investment. romney also released the tax return he expects to file in 2011. now the four remaining republicans debated in florida and it only took a few minutes for romney and newt gingrich to go after each other. romney tried to link gingrich the áf as a lobbyist. >> we just learned today that

they are projecting their own shortcomings on to athletes. >> they are saying this is about me. and i'm not realizing my full potential. >> reporter: our sports psychologists says metaphorically speaking we've all fumbled the ball before it has just not been on a national stage. ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on last night's game. san francisco police tell us they arrested 29 people, 16 of those arrests were outside the stadium. 13 were inside the park. most were alcohol related. police also removed more than 100 people from the stick for unruly behavior. officers say the late kick off time may have been a factor. new at 10:00, the push to block a new 49ers stadium in santa clara has cleared one major hurdle. stadium opponents have gathered the more than 4,500 signatures needed to put the stadium project before voters again. santa clara officials are going

san francisco's sheriff legal problems are compounding. a former girlfriend has now come forward and filed a police report suggesting mirkerimi has a violent temper. healther holmes is live now in city hall with how the latest allegations could affect the sheriff's political career, heather. >> reporter: most legal analysts agree that this potentially is a big blow to mirkerimi's defense. and that now it's just a matter of time before his legal problems force him out of the sheriff's office here in the fourth floor of city hall. >> reporter: san francisco's embattled sheriff ignored questions as the evidence against him mounts. >> this takes a case that i thought was weak and makes it a
