save the three. a life preserver was recovered along with an ice chest were recovered. one victim told paramedics they had been in the frigid waters for four hours. >> whether or not they had been in the waters for four hours is just a statement they made. but they were long enough to get hypothermia. >> we tried to interact with him. tried to get him to say his name which eventually after five minutes he kind of came to. >> reporter: he came to enough to identify himself and then off he went to the hospital and ryan resumed his run. now the three boaters thought to be in their 30s or 40s are at uc med center tonight. one of them is in critical condition. we're live at ocean beach in

san francisco, debra villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. new video tonight into the ktvu newsroom. right now berkeley police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened just before 7:00. our camera man says he spotted more than two dozens evidence markers and shell casings. police told us that it appears the gunman specifically targeted the victim. shadick is close at this hour. the shooter is still on the loose. san francisco police say they struck a major blow against crime in just one day arresting 70 me and women wanted for a variety of misdemeanors, -- 70 men and women. eric rasmussen was in the area where police made all those arrests. >> reporter: police say this is simply where the search led

president obama said his brief encounter with arizona governor brewer was blown out of proportion. brewer said that the president was upset on how she portrayed the president in a book. >> this was really not a big deal. >> were you tense? >> you know diane i'm usually accused of not being of not being tense enough, too relaxed. >> jan brewer greeted the president at a tarmac, they were seen in a brief conversation. the public forum took place in palo alto. it has its own utility but several major pg & e lines run beneath the streets. they need to test another 180 miles of pipeline.

they say much has changed since the september of 2010 when a gas line ruptured in san bruno causing an explosion that killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. we have new leadership, new programs, new practices, we're doing a comprehensive overhaul. on wall street today, a late report on home sales send an up market to the white house. the dow lost 22 points on the day, nasdaq was down 13. 2011 was the last year for new home sales since records began. state attorney general harris is rejecting a settlement between the 50 states and major banks over the foreclosure crisis. harris called the settlement inadequate. she had already pulled out of the settlement talks saying that the deal did not help

new information tonight a fire at a house in hayward has let led to the discovery of a substantial marijuana operation. authorities left with hundreds of pot plants in hand, lloyd lacuesta was there. >> reporter: neighbors said they had no idea what was going on inside this 3,000 square foot house. tonight sheriff deputies showed us what they found inside. as many as 800 marijuana plants, some ready for harvest were growing in three separate rooms of the house under high power lights. >> some of these rooms have as many as 16 lights per room. >> reporter: sergeant schuler says they had rewired the

operation to avoid paying high bills to pg & e and it caught fire. >> it looks like it was related to the pg & e being bypassed in the garage. which is common in these marijuana growths. >> reporter: authorities are looking for a couple who had rented the house for the past year. neighbors say there were no signs or smells that this was a marijuana grow house. >> i never saw anything come out of the house, i never saw bails or anything that would lead me to think there was anything going on there. the sheriff's department is handling the investigation as the house is an unincorporated area. deputies say they are finding more and more of these marijuana grow houses in residential neighborhoods. >> there's many dangers that go on with these operations. one being fire, another is a home invasion robbery. >> reporter: from what they found inside the house there are indications that several crops of marijuana were grown here over several months.

fire damage is put at $225,000. the marijuana is worth $800,000. live in hayward, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. b.a.r.t. is putting out the word that extra eyes and ears are needed to catch metal thieves. thieves are taking cooper wire and other materials from b.a.r.t. stations around the area. police estimate that last year thieves cost the agency $90,000 and now riders are being called upon to report any suspicious activity. that includes people loitering near or walking along tracks, cars or trucks without b.a.r.t. logos parked near b.a.r.t. tracks. and even people taking photos or video of b.a.r.t. facilities. a suspect was arrested after he picked the wrong time and place to light up a cigarette. alameda sheriff deputies were about to site franklin bean for lighting up in the wrong area. but after they ran a check,

opposed lifting the stay siting an e-mail that lopez wrote to a neighbor in october. on the e-mail, mirkirimi had watched the boy for an hour and that the boy was wet, hungry and had been left in a car. the child is devastated by being away from his father but never addressed the e-mail. lopez who has said she wants mirkerimi to return home left in tears. >> the only thing i can is let this process unfold and let it do so in the courts. >> reporter: today the san francisco mayor said he doesn't expect to mirkerimi to take a leave of absence.

police on the peninsula are trying to track down a group of robbers that attacked a man in the parking lot of a high end shopping center. as ktvu's maureen naylor reports, the man appears to have been targeted for jewelry. according to police, the shopper in his 60s was attacked by three to four well-dressed men at the shopping center around 3:00 in the afternoon.

around the parking lot at the macy's store. >> the man had gone to the shopping center with the intend to have some jewelry appraised. he was approached by these suspects. >> reporter: that's when they say he was pistol whipped by an armed suspect while the others grabbed the jewelry. ultimately driving off in a black mini van. >> the suspects appeared to be very well-dressed. there were multiple suspects. the men had been followed out of a jewelry store. more than likely this was something that had been planned. >> reporter: the primary suspect described in his 30s wearing a hip length black jacket, black shoes and black driving cap. this long time resident says he had just left the same parking lot just moments earlier. >> they patrol the parking lot all day long. i usually see the guys two or

three times. i saw the guy yesterday when i was here. >> reporter: the mall also has closed circuit television which police are reviewing. the victim was treated for minor injuries. because police believe this was not a single attack, they're looking into if a larger ring is involved. a video seems to contradict a police report about ron paul. he had set off an alarm in the body scanner and wanted to go through again instead of getting a pat down. ron paul says if he was appointed president he would abolish the tsa. police say they have discovered why small cracks

only on 2 tonight, we ride along with oakland police to see firsthand an undercover campaign against sex trafficking. ktvu's amber lee live in oakland tonight and tell us the city is trying to maintain the quality of life despite dwindling resources, amber. >> reporter: we're at 28th and san pablo. police told us this is one of oakland's hot spots for human trafficking. tonight the vice unit took us along as they went undercover. from an unmarked police vehicle, we watched as officers pulled over a blue car. inside are an undercover officer and a prostitute who had just gotten into the vehicle with him. today's operation is part of the city's 100 block plan to prevent crime. >> a lot of times pimps have

prostitutes have girls selling drugs for them. >> reporter: sergeant yoshi who asked us not to show her face these undercover busts are an effort to rescue young girls and improve the quality of life for residents. >> as long as they have some type of rehabilitation behind it it's a good thing. >> reporter: 23-year-old -- says he used to sell drugs but that he's turned his life around and is raising daughters. stokes says he doesn't like what's going on around him. >> you see how a lot of young females are treated, you see how a lot of young females are treated themselves. >> reporter: after arrest the young women are quickly tied to advocates. >> human trafficking is such a quickly involving crime that we haven't kept up. >> reporter: tonight's operation was focused on getting women and girls off the

street. but this is an ongoing effort. other operations target pimps and johns. reporting live in oakland, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. certain juvenile sex offenders will be affected by a court ruling for decades. the federal appeals court in san francisco ruled juvenile sex offenders can be required to register as sex offenders for 25 years. this deals with those convicted in federal court. the sex offenders must also report to authorities every three months for 25 years. the case involved three montana teenagers. the u.s. navy is being sued for its expanded use of sonar in training. conservationists and indian tribes filed the suit today. the suit claims that the service was wrong for using the sonar training. the conservationists want the

training permit invalidated. the caltranss technician who was fired after falsified test reports has now been allowed to resign. dwayne wild had appeared his firing. caltrans said the deal avoided a costly trial. wilds had admitted falsifying safety reports. many cars seen on the road run on gasoline but that could change. new standards could transform what you will be driving in the future. >> reporter: auto makers are once again focusing on california. this week's state regulators will likely approve new rules that will require 15% of all new cars sold to be ultra low or zero emission vehicles by 2025. >> i think as consumers especially california consumers are very concerned about environmental issues and making sure that we're leaving the earth good and safe as far as

as well. we started with fog in the morning. coastal fog clears out pretty rapidly. tomorrow will be a very sunny day by 10:00, 11:00 for most of us. even along the beaches we have clearing south of half-moon bay. as we head toward the weekend, more of the same. saturday is the nicest day of the weekend with more cloud cover. valley fog in the forecast, just because that's the pattern. with enthe high pressure sets up, the ground is wet. the winds are light, you get this. we've had it, we've had a dose of it this morning. if you saw it this morning, yesterday morning, in your travels, you will see it again tomorrow morning in your commute. plenty of activity in the pacific but it's all going this way. this little area tweaked through, you see a little sprinkle. we've had a very weak system. we talked about that yesterday. what's out here in the pacific, pacific, the trajectory. that's a big set up that will
