complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> i have never heard of one, so it is a little frightening. >> fear and disgust at a south bay university because of what happened this morning. good afternoon, i am tori campbell. there is a campus alert in place at san jose state university. this after reports of a young man groping students in a dorm early this morning. ktvu's lorain joins us live to learn how word spread fast. many students woke up to a

scary text or tweet this morning on their cell phones, warning them to lock their doors. now san jose state police are talking with students inside joe west hall, hoping someone can id the suspected groper. san jose state police combed the campus early this morning following a 3:30 a.m. call from a frightened female student. she said she had just been groped in her dorm room. >> i woke up afterwards and walked down the hall and there were police out there, a couple of cops out there asking different people questions. >> reporter: 4 female students told police a hispanic male in his early 20s entered their rooms and touched them iron appropriately. they believed he moved through looking for unlocked doors. >> that is scary, and i would be freaked out but i try to make sure my door is closed all the time and locked all the time. >> police checked cameras throughout the hall. they think they may have pictures of the suspect.

the university says it does everything it can to protect students from outsiders. you need a security card to enter but if students or residents allow others to tailgate on the way in, that is how we have individuals entering the building who may or may not be residents. university police are still trying to figure out if the suspect is an outsider or a student. the victims were offered counseling. no one was injured physically. they plan to hold meetings to talk to students about safety. >> you can go to ktvu.com for more on the story. we posted a much longer interview with the spokesperson with more details about what happened and what students are being advised. in san jose a high school was on lock-down for a time this morning but it is now over. it all started with a threat made on a social media website

by a 15-year-old. ktvu's robert honda joins us live to explain what is happening on the campus now. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. we are at evergreen valley high school, where the scene right now is relatively calm as everyone here tries to get back to their usual routine after a very unusual hectic morning. according to students we talked to rumors started earlier this week that that 15-year-old student made those threats through a social media site he was going to come on to campus today and shoot it up. we are told police had not been able to contact him and when he was spotted on campus policished a shelter in place warning for people here. students said they were not sure what to make of the situation. district officials said they didn't want to take any chances. >> a couple of days ago i heard there was going to be a shooting but nothing happened so i just kind of shook it off as nothing was going to happen but today i was just walking coming on campus and i seen all the cops here and so i don't

know, i was just like whoa, what happened, is there a shooting? >> we took the highest precaution along with the police department of putting the school on a lock-down until we could assure everybody here, the district, the parents, the students, the teachers, that they were safe and at this juncture is that where we are and thank god that is how it ended up. >> reporter: a short while ago police said the teenaged suspect has been detained and is being questioned. police say he was not armed and has not been cooperative. a decision will be made later on whether that young man will be arrested. live in san jose robert honda, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you robert. thick fog blanketed the bay area causing problems for commuters and air travelers. this is how it looks like outside right now from the san mateo bridge there off in the distance. and conditions this morning were so bad it caused the highway patrol to issue fog

advisories for several bay area roads and bridges. they had warnings signs out advising drivers to proceed with caution this morning. there were also foggy conditions on freeways and highways in the east bay and on the peninsula. thick fog also slowed drives down along 101 in marin county. dense fog also caused delays this morning at sfo. the ffa put a ground delay program in effect until 11:00 this morning. the fog most affected incoming flights. they had to use instrument landing systemmings to systems to guide the planes down to the runway. they said this is not typical for january. >> unusual this time of year. this is more like a summertime pattern than january but it is what it is. >> the fog has cleared for now at sfo but as always call ahead and check with your airline to see if your flight is on time. rosemary will be here in a few minutes to tell us if the fog will invade the bay area again over the weekend.

in berkeley police are investigating the first homicide of the year in that city. a man was shot multiple times last night at the corner of shaddock avenue and emmerson street. claudine wong joins us to show us the damage left behind and reaction from the victim's friends. >> reporter: tory, over the last couple of hours people have come to bring balloons and flowers outside here. the crowd has begun to gather outside. people still coming to terms with the violence out here. we are getting a better idea of what happened from the people who survived this gunfire. we saw at least seven bullet holes in just the front door of this berkeley home. the front window was shattered and inside more bullet holes than we could count. police put out at least 79 evidence markers and say those bullets started flying just before 7:00 last night. neighbors say they heard it happen. >> we heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, and i kind of stood there and i was like, no, this

ain't firecrackers. and then it stopped. it was like a pause and then you heard a pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, again. >> friends say the victim was headed to a frpped's apartment to watch a basketball game. his friend didn't want to go on camera but told us he and his girlfriend went out the door, she stopped to fix her hair before opening up the door and he believes that saved her life because moments later the gunshots started, glass started flying and they hit the floor and crawled out the back door to safety. the victim was found on the front porch. those who knew him said he was a good person. >> his motto was keep it moving. >> while he was targeted his friends say they can't understand why. >> they took him, someone who would -- he was a good kid -- a good person.

they took a good human being away from here uncalled-for. >> reporter: back live out here at shaddock and emerson, friends say the victim was a father, he was close to his mother, i did just get off the phone with police, they are not officially releasing his identity and continue to search for suspects. >> president obama focused on tuition costs this morning as he took his sales pitch for his state of the union agenda to the university of michigan. [ cheers ] >> mr. obama wants to restructure federal aid so it goes to colleges that hold down tuition costs. it is a plan he first laid out in tuesday night's speech. >> we are putting colleges on notice, you can't keep -- you can't assume that you will just jack up tuition every single year. if you can't stop tuition from going up then the funding you get from taxpayers each year

will go down. we should push -- >> any change to the aid plan would have to be approved by congress. poles indicate mitt romney is surging to a big lead in tuesday's florida republican presidential primary. in a powell from quinn ni qunnipiac university he lead. they took poles and found romney has an average lead of 7.2 percentage points. two hours ago the california supreme court dealt a plow to republican efforts to redraw districts in the state before the upcoming elections. the court ruled state senate maps drawn up last year by a citizen commission can be used in the elections in june and november. republicans stand to lose seats to democrats under the newly

drawn senate maps which would give democrats the 2/3s vote they need to approve tax increases. they have new rules that require 1-7 new cars sold in california must be electric or zero emission by 2025 and mandates a reduction in pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, automakers all support the new standards but the california new car dealers association said the board is overestimating consumer demand for electric vehicles. ahead new hopes for more green jobs here in the bay area. we will tell you how this scene a couple of hours ago is part of that effort. spring like temperatures in january. rosemary will tell you how warm it will get in your neighborhood this weekend. >> i don't know where everyone

crash shut down part of interstate 880 in oakland. it happened two hours ago. 5 cars were involved. ambulances were called in. one person suffered minor injuries, traffic was backed up but the road cleared and both lanes re-opened one hour ago. more police officers could soon be patrolling downtown walnut creek. earlier this month we reported on one fight involving 15 people outside the restaurant. now the contra costa times reports the police chief is asking the city council to add two new officers to the force. if approved those officers would be placed on the downtown beat. a final decision is expected in a few months. bart directors are moving ahead with the next phase of strengthing the transbay tube to make sure it is safe during

earthquakes. the board approved a 7.7 million dollar earthquake retrofit contract with california engineering contractors of pleasanton. they will install steel plating inside the three.5 mile long tube. the work is expected to begin in the spring and be completed in 2014. it is part of bart's $1.3 billion earthquake safety program. a partnership was announced today in san francisco's bay view hunter's point neighborhood, aimed at increasing green jobs. epa officials toured the ecocenter this morning. the solar powered facility treats its own wastewater. today a training program was launched to help educate san francisco community college students about sustainability. >> the environmental services and technology industry is a growing industry in the united states.

people here, young people are being trained to join that industry and be part of that market, which is a large and growing market in the u.s. >> the ecocenter was built with stimulus funding provided by the american recovery and reinvestment act. three people are in the hospital following a dramatic rescue at san francisco's ocean beach. a small boat capsized last night. several people on the beach rushed to help the boaters, who were fighting for their lives in rough and chilly waters. and there was dense fog. one good samaritan was on his nightly jog when he spotted the commotion and raced to pull one man out of the surf. >> took his clothes off. took my clothes off and wrapped him up in my clothes and just kind of held him and started rubbing his body to try to get the circulation going. >> the three boaters are thought in to be in their 30s or 40s, one is in critical condition. the people who live aboard

their boats at the san leandro marina have a dilemma, the tide is depositing more silt under their boats, the city does not have money to dredge it, so in two to three years it might have to close. >> if it comes time to move i don't know where everyone is going to go. a lot are more expensive. of course, we can't just go there because there is waiting lists, so everyone is affected by it. >> the city is negotiating for a huge development projecting the area, some boat owners hope it will include a way to save their marina. high surf has fueled speculation the mavericks surf competition might happen soon. organizers were out at pillar point yesterday but said fog made the conditions too dangerous. they say it is too soon to say when it might begin. there is a three month window for the contest open through march 21st, once it is

degrees above normal. look at the pattern change going on here. ridge of high pressure building in for the weekend. system sliding down the basin and us it continues south our friends here over southern california will see breezy conditions. a red flag warning for southern california. sunny skies, 60s in the forecast today, tomorrow is the warmest day. northerly winds 10 to 20 miles per hour, so could be breezy this afternoon, especially in the hills, already seeing the gusts near 50 meals per hour at mt. diablo and so those very strong gusts will actually remain in the hills with breezy conditions throughout the rest of the bay area. i want to fast forward us into sunday. take a look at this, north of us rain, high clouds over the bay area sunday night into monday. this system is going to pass through. could bring the north bay just a little bit of drizzle. it won't be much. i do want to point that out. so for today, tomorrow, even into sunday mostly sunny skies, nice, mild, relatively warm weather in the forecast. sunday night into monday it

the group says it is preventable and treatable and has become an epidemic. the group says it effects 10% of african american men between 45 and 55. plans for a dedicated dog area park in the town of miragga have lit hit a legal snag. a lawsuit has been filed that seeks to force the town to postpone it. the plan calls for creating a fenced in area for off leash dogs and their owners, the suit says the plan has several drawbacks, including its location, which would require a picnic and children's play area to be relocated. express toll plans are scheduled to on on the 27th of next month. the lanes will belong highway 237 and 880 between dixon landing road and first street. this area is clogged with

traffic on most weekdays including this morning when a ktvu camera was looking at highway 237. transportation officials say they are working to avoid problems that plague the opening of express lanes. bay area based facebook is being watched closely on wall street. we will tell you about reports today causing that attention. one of the best known department stores in the bay area seems to be having an issue with its landlord.

the wall street journal reports today that facebook could file for its long awaited initial public offering as early as wednesday. facebook's expected launch as a publicly traded company is the most hotly anticipated tech ipo in more than a decade. stocks are continuing the trading pattern that has dominated tech shares fairing better than blue clips, the dow currently down 43, nasdaq is up 15, s&p is flat. part of the macy's in san francisco's union square is up for sale. according to the business times the property owners have failed to reach a lease agreement with the department store. the portion for sale is 110,000 square feet just to the right of the gary street entrance. now macy's could be forced to
