good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, january 28th. it is a bit chilly outside right now. but it's expected to warm up a little later. rosemary is joining us now with a look at your forecast. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you! another president amount day in store, but a lot colder this morning by 10 to 15 degrees in some cases. mostly clear skies, little patchy fog. forecasted highs, some nearing 70 degrees. we'll look at your numbers coming up in just a little bit! oakland police are trying to figure out what happened after two people were found dead inside a car. that discovery made about 10:00 last night on -- near newton avenue just a few blocks from lake merritt. lorain blanco has more on the investigation and what we know so far. lorain. >> reporter: officers are still on scene early this morning. you can see a crime scene investigation van parked right in front of the house where police found two bodies inside a car. right now there's no one inside

that home while police try to secure a search warrant. they discovered the bodies around 10 friday night on apple avenue near newton. police showed up for a welfare check when two people didn't show up for work. officers didn't find anything the first time but later that night they found the body. police won't say a lot about the specifics but they can confirm that one of the people miss something a retired police captain. >> we're in the preliminary stages at this point. if anybody has any information regard what occurred, we would definitely like to know about it. and we're doing all we can to gather the fact. it might take awhile before we get to the bottom of what occurred. >> now, police on scene this morning tell us it could take awhile to get that warrant they need to search inside the home. at this point, they are investigating this as a homicide. reporting live, lorain blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police are also investigating a drive-by shoot that injured one person and

made a mess of several kisses in downtown oakland. it happened about 3:30 this morning on 14th and harrison streets. police say one person was shot in the leg but he escaped the hail of bullets and took shelter in a nearby motel. at least three businesses and a car were hit by bulges, one storefront completely shot out. right now there's no information on suspects. san leandro police searching for a man who stabbed a 15-year-old mother. the teenager was found last night on pacific avenue near castro street. officers say she had multiple stab wounds to her stomach. the man police say they're looking for is 19-year-old henry leon of oakland, the father of the victim's nine- month-old baby. he is driving a 2004 cadillac escalade, dark blue in color with black rims. in overnight news in san francisco a labor dispute on a cruise ship docked in san francisco has now been

resolved. that ship is the sister ship to the concordia that ran aground in italy. it is currently docked at pier 35. about three dozen workers walked off last night over pay issues. >> you don't treat us like we do whatever we want we are human, we're just asking for help bus this is unfair. this is really unfair. >> san francisco labor council helped the crew reach a settlement shortly after 1:00 this morning. workers are now going to get those tips in euros. the ship is scheduled to depart at 1:00 this afternoon on a around the world cruise with stops on five continents. there are 2300 passengers onboard. two weeks after it ran aground off the coast of tuscany, divers continue to look for missing passengers. so far 16 people have died while another 16 remain lost or presumed dead. following an invitation from italian authorities, a team of

inspectors from the european commission has just arrived to observe salvage operations and to make sure there's no damage to the environment. >> this new experience -- [not understandable] the way we can face such a situation better. >> the concordia's captain remains under house arrest. investigators suspect he took the ship off its charted course and sailed right into a reef. as compensation the cruise line is offering $14,000 plus ticket refunds and travel expenses to surviving passengers. occupy oakland is promising to take over a vacant building today. protestors announced their plans earlier this week arguing too many buildings in the city are vacant despite record foreclosures and homelessness. protestors aren't saying yet which vacant building they plan to move into today. but the takeover will start

with a noontime ramee at frank ogawa plaza. a march to the building will follow and protestors plan to use the building to establish a new home for their movement. police in washington, d.c. could be getting ready to take more action against occupy protestors. early last month police arrested several protestors as they built a wooden structure which is operated by the national parks service. the park service says it plans on enforcing the no-camping rule at that square starting on monday. some protestors say they have no plans to leave and will defend their encampment. police are warning people about a rash of thefts from purses to cell phones. officers say pickpockets are prowling the city, targeting bar patrons. at this nightclub security guards caught a pickpocket this week who allegedly stole five cell phones for a value of $1700. local bars say they're on high alert. >> it was a little bit of a spike earlier in the year.

we've actually cracked down and we've been a lot more aware of what is going on inside the bar and outside the bar. >> nightclubs say they're taking proactive measures, including stashing customer coats behind the bar and providing a coat check. police encouraged people to use the buddy system and urge women to avoid hanging their purses on the back of chairs. san jose police have released a sketch of a man suspected in a hate crime. the drawing shows one of at least three men who beat a hindu man at a supermarket last november. the assailant is described as latino in his 20s, 200 pounds and about 5 feet 8 inches tall. 32-year-old man had his jaw broken. police say the man attacked him with a tequila bolt approximately called him a terrorist. a memorial walk will be held today to raise money for the family of fallen police officer jim capoot. the officer was shot to and killed last november as he chased a suspect in a bank robbery. that suspect henry albert smith, jr. is due in court next

week. today's memorial walk starts just about an hour from now. at the home depot on admiral callahan lane. participants will walk 29 miles to vacaville, where capoot lived with his wife and daughters. registration for the walk costs $30. a busy san francisco intersection is shut down this weekend. muni crews are replacing the track at church and market streets, both directions of church street will be closed all weekend. westbound market is also closed. several muni lines are affected. officials say the work on the tracks should be finished by monday morning. good morning to you! just a beautiful start to the day. tack a look at the sun rising. 7:17 officially. and we have plenty of sunshine in store for today. temperatures will rebound once again, but this morning awfully cold, especially over the knocked bar. a few patches of fog in thorning but nothing like what

we saw yesterday. significantly dryer at this hour. 40 degrees san rafael. 47 san francisco. 39 hayward. upper 30s in livemore. so a chillier start by by the afternoon temperatures well above average. very calm conditions in most cases where we were are continuing to see a breeze in the hills. it looks like the north bay hills have calmed do you, but to the east we're looking at 25 and 30-mile pearl hour gusts over the oakland hills and mount diablo still reporting 35 miles per hour. these offshore winds helping to dry out the atmosphere. we had plenty of fog yesterday morning, not the case for today. and through the afternoon, that offshore breeze is really going to warm us up so unseasonably mild for saturday. plenty of sunshine. 60s, even a few 70s for the afternoon. but by sunday we're going to notice some changes. still come late in the day, afternoon clouds, few degrees cooler for the afternoon. and even the possibility of a sprinkle. it will come in the overnight hours, but this system not going to amount to much.

above normal temps expected for the afternoon. new e-mails released by bp so that the oil company knew about the potential oil disaster in the gulf of mexico just hours after the deepwater horizon explosion. that explosion occurred back on april 20, 2010. and a short time later, e-mails sent by bp officials talk about worries over failure of the blowout preventer, leading to millions of gallons of oil gushing into the gulf. the e-mails also suggest bp officials tried to limit knowledge of the potential danger outside the company. bp officials are not commenting on the e-mails. six americans are stuck in egypt after officials told them they cannot leave. one of those americans include sam lahood, the son of transportation secretary ray lahood. younger lahood and the five other americans are part of the international republican institute, or iri. it is a washington based group focused on building democracies overseas. egypt's ruling military is cracking down on the iri and

dictator. >> ron paul, essentially skipping florida, campaigned today in maine. about 400,000 people have already cast early ballots in florida. the primary is this tuesday. it's the first closed primary, meaning only registered republicans can vote. in washington, craig boswell, fox news. and as we mentioned, newt gingrich and mitt romney are campaigning in florida this weekend. here is a live look in pensacola, where mitt romney is just wrapping up a rally. and also want to give you another look at an event in another sight in florida. newt gingrich holding a meet and greet at the pga center for golf learning and performance. florida's primary is set for tuesday. in his weekly online video address, president obama is calling on congress to stop blocking his presidential pounds. >> i'm asking congress to stop this kind of behavior by passing a rule that allows all judicial and public service nominations a simple up or down

vote within 90 days. >> this nation is great -- >> the request comes after president obama delivered his state of the union address earlier this week, and that is where he asked congress to follow the example of the armed forces and work together. and if you want, you can now have a chance to buy president obama's old car. the several claims mr. obama used to cruise around in this 2005 chrysler 300 car. the anonymous seller asked a reputable dealer to post the item on ebay this week. mr. obama allegedly drove the chrysler roughly 19,000 miles, between 2004 and 2007. starting bid, a million dollars. there are no takers yet. the auction ends wednesday night. more speculation about facebook going public this year. the with wall street journal says the company could file the paperwork next week for an initial public offering. the sale of stock would follow in a few months. the giant is expected to raise $10 billion through an ipo with

a evaluation of up to $100 billion. it could become the largest internet ipo ever. facebook officials are not commenting. and online -- is making the rounds on facebook and in e- mails. some are not amused. that map breaks up the bay area in various sections and labels. some find those labels amusing but others, including one man who just received, it says the map is insulting and filled with stereotypes. >> it's dirty. it's offensive. so. >> did you forward it. >> definitely not. >> you won't? >> no. it's in the trash. >> the creator of the map has so far kept his or her identity a secret. today is the final day of macworld iworld 2012. there will be a closing ceremony at 3 p.m. at the convention center. the event included more than 300 exhibitors and 150 app developers. the convention also included

concerts and a film festival. only on 2, a palo alto police officer is getting ready for a busy summer. he is the new head coach for the u.s. olympic badminton team. lee trains at the california badminton academy in fremont but also has previous olympic experience. lee served as a captain for the 1992 u.s. team in barcelona and also coached the american women's team at the 2011 pan- american games. >> there are seven other candidates that also put in for the position, so when i got the notice that i got it, i was beyond excited. of yeah, it was really nice. >> lee will leave for london in july and until then will serve on the palo alto police force. we're not less than six man away from the summer olympics in london. the games begin july 27th. the athlete village has just been finished. preparations for the games remain on time and on budget.

so far, about one-third of the tickets have been sold. 900,000 visitors are expected in london for the olympics in july and august. two of the oakland a's will help feed some of the less fortunate in alameda county today. first baseman chris carter if outfielder michael taylor will serve lunch at the society of st. vincent depaul. they serve more than 150,000 people each year providing hot meals, homeless resource centers, a health clinic as well as a computer lab. and tomorrow is the oakland a's fanfest and a's fans will have the unique opportunity to meet one on one with managing general partner lew wolff who has been pushing to move to the team to san jose. they trading all-star pitcheersers and the fanfest is tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the coliseum. time is 7:21.

and keep you updated. the main road from the bay area into yosemite is expected to reopen this morning. big oak flat road has been closed since last weekend when a storm triggered a rockslide. crews have removed the debris. they're going to repave the road next week, which could require more closures. the santa ana winds are raising the rick of wildfires in southern california. high wind warnings in effect through 3:00 this afternoon for counties including los angeles, orange and ventura. gusts could reach up to 65 miles an hour. unseasonably warm temperatures, low humidity and strong winds forced a red-flag warning this weekend. all right. a little chilly this morning, rosemary saying things might warm up for us, right? >> yes, we'll see another round of unseasonably mild weather. we are off to a chilly start, a lot dryer here this morning. and so the patches of fog only confined to some areas of the

north bay. and that should burn off fairly quickly if it's outside your door. 38 degrees is what we'll be seeing through the 8:00 hour. low 50s for some areas right around the bay. so a chilly start inland, from 10 to 15 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. noontime numbers, upper 50s, low 60s, mostly sunny skies. very calm conditions, light winds, offshore breeze continuing in throughout the afternoon. and at 4:00, we'll be sitting near 70 degrees in some spots. santa rosa you're exhibited to hit 70. if you head south into the south bay, upper 60s, low 70s near san jose. morgan hill as well. the rest of us somewhere in between. 65 expected in the city for the afternoon. 67 for oakland. 66 in concord. 67 degrees for fremont. the extended forecast shows you today will be the warmest day, increasing clouds by tomorrow night. looks like we may get a little drizzle perhaps a light shower sunday night into monday morning. it's not going to be a lot. definitely not enough for us

with how this is connected to a welfare check made earlier in the day. >> reporter: police discovered the two bodies after a second welfare check here in oakland. they had to break into the car. right now you can see broken glass still on the street. they discovered the bodies around 10 friday night on apple avenue. police showed up for a welfare check when two people didn't show up for work. police can confirm that one of people missing is a retired police captain. >> i understand that the person that one of them we're looking for is not a captain at this time but apparently was retired. but as far as his background, i have not been provided that information so i can't say. >> police on scene this morning tell us they are trying to secure a search warrant to get inside the home. we just checked with the neighbor who says the people inside the home just moved in a few months ago.

right now police are investigating this as a homicide. reporting live, lorain blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. just a half hour earlier oakland police responded to a fatal shooting that happened at 9:30 at nining and the center streets. a neighbor heard at least 10 gunshots. the victim was rush to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. there is no information about any suspects at this time. it was an emotional gathering for the friends and family of berkeley's latest homicide victim. >> what we ask right now that -- put your hands on the violence that is in the street. >> a group of people came together in berkeley last night for a candlelight vigil. they were honoring 35-year-old kenneth warren, jr. he was the father of five children and worked as a barber. police say he was shot while leaving work at emerson and shattuck on thursday night. >> devastated. i just couldn't breathe. i just couldn't believe it.

>> his daughter diamond left teddy bears just a few feet from where he was gunned down. all his children are under the age of 15. he is berkeley's first homicide victim of the year. a witness reported seeing a car speed off but so far no arrests have been made. san francisco police are investigating two shootings with a 90 minutes of each other. the first happened around 9:00 last night at eddie's street near buchanan the police say an 18-year-old woman had to be taken to the hospital and is now said to be in stable condition. then just before 10:30, a second shooting occurred on octavia and greave in the hayes valley neighborhood. police say a man was taken to the hospital, his condition is not known and no information on the gunman is available. san jose state police are evaluating security after a 21- year-old man broke into a campus dorm and groped four women. it happened early yesterday morning at joe west dorm. university police say michael alexander escobar walked from room to room, looking for

unlocked doors. students who were signed up on campus alert system received a text notifying them in about the gropings. >> this is conventional dormitory. there are many bedrooms lined up on a long hallway so we need to remind the students to lock those bedroom doors. >> police tracked down escobar to a home on reed street. they spend the day taking evidence from that home. oakland police are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a man who they say tried to sexually assault a woman in broad daylight around thursday morning. a 36-year-old woman was walking on 35th avenue in the fruitvale district when a man approached her and forced her to the ground. police say the man attempted to sexually assault the woman but she was able to get away. we are now learning more about the nightlife concerns walnut creek is trying to address. as we reported this week, they are considering several options to combat recent violence in the downtown area.

however, the city admits the problems are limited to just a few businesses. one solution includes the addition of police officers to be placed on the downtown beat. >> staffing has been fairly static up until we went through a budget crisis as most communities have a couple years ago. so we've actually had to decrease the level of staffing across the organization, including police officers. >> walnut creek officials are also looking at a nuisance ordinance that would give them more power to penalize problem businesses be but some businesses tell ktvu they are concern the city's response could be a bit too forceful. twitter's new policy is now leading to a boycott of the san francisco based website. some users are refusing to tweet today to protest the company's plan to censor tweets on a country by country basis. twitter announced the new policy earlier this week, saying different countries have different ideas on freedom of expression. supporters of the company say

twitter is only following the laws in the countries it operates in but opponents argue the company is restricting freedom of presentation. pg&e is facing a $16 million feign in the week of the san bruno disaster. pg&e failed to conduct pipeline surveys and identify leaks. in a statement they said receiving the penalty is disappointing. the utilities self-reported the violation last year. pg&e has 10 days to pay that fine. it's expected to be one of several fines to come. time is 7:36. the domestic violence allegations against the san francisco sheriff have led investigators to the san francisco chronicle. the district attorney subpoenaed a photo of ross mirkarimi and his wife and son that was taken last may. a source tells ktvu the d.a. may be looking for scratches or bruises on ill anna's arm. since mirkarimi is barred from living with his family, he is

staying with friends, including former mayor art agnus. >> the thing that helps him the most i think is focusing on his job as he has been, to work as hard as he can, so he doesn't have to think about the pain of not being with his family. >> he also said the mayor and board of supervisors should stay out of it and the court handle this case. there will be a fund-raiser tonight to ben fight bryan stow. tim flannery will give a concert in napa. he'll be joined by his band and former member of the gritful dead bob weir. proceeds will be donated to stowe's family. the 42-year-old paramedic was beaten outside dodger stadium last year and has been in rehabilitation since october. two men have been charged in the beating and are due back in court in march. tonight's fund-raiser starts at 8:00 at the uptown theater in napa. merchants in pittsburg are joining forces to oppose a proposed homeless shelter in their neighborhood.

state law requires the city of pittsburg to pick an area for a facility. some are upset with the sites under consideration. they're concerned about potential loitering and shoplifting. >> negative in a big way. i mean, homeless means they usually don't have any money to spend. that means crime will happen. >> homeless advocates say emergency shelters are essential, especially during these rough times. downtown business owners say they understand the need but they want the facility built in an area that does not affect the local economy. the city planning commission will decide where to zone for shelter next month. former san francisco supervisor dusty has a new position. mayor ed lee appointed him to a newly created position focusing on services and better outcomes for those who are homeless or living in support of housing. he has work on the city's homeless problem for years and

mean fewer murders. southwest airlines has opened up an investigation into a deadly crash involving a baggage cart. it happened thursday at dulles international. a the victim was driving a cart when he crashed into a passenger shuttle. none of the people onboard the shuttle were hurt. dulles is one of few airports that still runs mobile lounges to transport passengers between terminals and concourses. a nevada national guardsman injured during last year's ihop shooting rampage is getting ready to return to duty. he reenlistered for another six years with the guard. he was within of seven people injured during the shooting. four people including three other guardsmen were killed. nevada's governor administered the oath and commended the sergeant for his commitment. >> i think it's quite remarkable that after going through all that, he has reenlisted his commitment to

officers discovered two bodies in a car around 10 friday night on apple avenue near newton. still very early in the investigation, so oakland police won't say a lot about the specifics. they can confirm they started their search for two missing people when those who knew them didn't hear from them. police on scene also confirmed that one of the people missing is a retired police captain. >> people were supposed to show up at work. and we had people that live in the residence here did not show up at work. and we tried it figure out where they are and that's what we're here for, trying to make contact with the residents to see if we could figure out where he were or why they didn't show up for work. >> right now police are investigating the case as a homicide. lorain blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. police investigating a shooting at 3:30 this morning on 14th and harrison streets. police say one person was shot in the leg, but he escaped the

ready to collect evidence around and inside the oakland home. officers discovered two bodies in a car around 10 last night on apple avenue near newton. it's still very early in the investigation, so police won't say a lot about the specifics. but neighbors tell us they're in shock. >> i researched this place before i came here, and it's not a place where people get murdered. it's not -- it's a very safe, quiet, nice neighborhood. and oakland, california. it's -- it's a perfectly nice area. and this is very unusual. this is a very unusual crime. >> right now police are investigating this as a homicide. we'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available. lorain blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police also son and today a fatal shooting last night. it happened at 9:30, a neighbor heard at least 10 gunshots. the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

there is no information about any suspects at this time. it was an emotional gathering for the friends and family of berkeley's homicide victim. >> what we ask right now that father you put your hands on the violence that is in the streets. >> a group of people came together. in berkeley last night for this candlelight vigil, honoring kenneth warren, jr., the father of five children and worked as a barber. police say he was shot while leaving work thursday night. >> devastated. i just couldn't breathe. i just couldn't believe it. >> warren's daughter left teddy bears just a few feet from where he was gunned down. all his children are under age 15. he is berkeley's first homicide victim of the year. a witness reported seeing a car speed off but no arrests have been made. san jose state plans on evaluating its security after a

21-year-old man broke into a campus dorm and groped four women. it happened early yesterday morning at the joe west dorm. university police say michael escobar walked from room to room, looking for unlocked doors. students who were signed up on the alert system received a text message notifying them about the gropings. >> keep in mind this is a conventional dormitory. there are many bedrooms lined up on a long hallway so we node to remind our students to lock those bedroom doors. >> police tracked down escobar to a home on rode street they spent the day taking evidence from the home. we're learning more about the nightlife concerns walnut creek is trying address as we have reported this week they are considering several options to combat recent violence in the area. however, the city admits the problems are limited to just a few businesses. one solution includes the addition of police officers being placed on the downtown

and the u.s. >> this morning's protests stayed peaceful. the u.s. wants to move more troops to the philippines to help reinforce its presence in asia as the wars in iraq and afghanistan wind down. new e-mails released by bp show the oil company knew about the potential oil disaster in the gulf of mexico hours after the deepwater horizon explosion. the explosion happened on april 20, 2010, hours later e-mails sent by officials show worries over possible failure of the blowout preventer, leading to millions of gallons of oil in the water. the e-mails also suggest bp officials tried to limit knowledge of the potential danger outside the company. bp officials are not commenting on the e-mails. new this morning, british police have made four more arrests in that country's ongoing phone hacking scandal tied to rupert murdoch's news dorm due to corruption and police bribery. a dozen people including a police officer have now been arrested in the ongoing

investigation. the arrests come one week after news corp agreed to pay damages to 37 hacking victims, including actor jude law. a federal judge has declared a mistrial in the case of a retired police detective accused of covering up a deadly price shot engine new orleans. the case is centered around the shooting of two unarmed people in the chaotic days after hurricane katrina. the defendant girard due gay was not involved in the shooting but prosecutors say he falsified documents during the investigation. yesterday a judge declared the mistrial after a prosecutor mentioned the name of a man who was beaten to death by new orleans police officers in an unrelated case. prosecutors will file for a retrial. some residents of new orleans want the national guards help to put an end to violence in their city. more than 20 people were killed this year alone. the mayor says new orleans police have an ongoing partnership with the national guard, but at this point there are no plans to call for them

opened up an investigation into a deadly crash involving a baggage cart. it happened thursday at dulles international outside of washington, d.c. the victim was driving a baggage cart when he crashed right into a passenger shuttle, none of the people onboard the shuttle were hurt. dulles is one of few airports in the world that still runs mobile lounges that transport passengers between terminals and concourses. a central valley mall is expected to reopen this morning after gunman opened fire inside. it happened last night at the mall in tulare county. police say a group of men got into an argument near the food court. two men opened fire, firing at least gunshots. two people had to go to the hospital but they are expected to survive. police are now searching for the gunmen. no arrests have been made. a former penn state football coach accused of child molestation is now seeking child visitation rights. jerry sandusky is asking a judge to modify of items of his
