good morning. >> reporter: good morning, pam. oakland mayor jean quan said it cost the city about $2 million since october to clean up things like graffiti own vandalism here at frank ogawa plaza. october was when the occupy oakland movement really picked up steam. you can see some of the writing here. that is what the mayor is referring to. after saturday ice occupy oakland protest there was damage inside city hall. the short doors were chained front after occupy oakland protestors entered the building after a saturday afternoon demonstration. a 100-year-old model of city hall was toppled over and damaged. there was also interior windows broken, flags burned, and damage to the city's electricity system to the city hall -- electrical system. >> constant vandalism is almost

every saturday. somebody has had graffiti. somebody has had their window broken. it's getting pretty tiring. >> it was all on saturday afternoon into the evening. when several occupy oakland protestors took to the streets for a day long demonstration. a group of about 500 people in the afternoon tried to take over a vacant convention center building and that to clashes between protestors and police. 400 people were arrested. occupy oakland supporters say people have a right to demonstrate and protest. they were defending what happened. >> message is being formed with them in mind. they should just come down and have their voices heard. caller: occupy oakland did have hold a general assembly meating here. there was no problems. according to their website, the group is planning another day of action against police on february 6th. live in oakland allie rasmus.

those cheers were greeting some of the 400 arrested protestors yesterday as they left oakland's detention facility. those protestors now face several charges. ranging from failure to dispurse to assault. however, they are defending themselves. they say their demonstration started peacefully and accused of oakland police of going overboard with the use of flash bangs and tear gas. people that want to recall oakland area jean quan are weighing in on her response to the latest occupy clash. coming up in 14 minutes why they say the hard stand she took came too late. the clock is ticking for occupy protestors in washington, d.c.. i want to take you there live this morning. this is a look at mcfearson square. the national park service has ordered protestors to shut down their encampment by noon today.

the conviction comes after a conventional hearing questioned whether it's right to sleep overnight. >> if they come to arrest me for camping they can take me to jail. i will be released and be right back here. >> they put up notices telling protestors to leave. one went tent to tent taking down the notices. youtube video showed park police trying to arrest that man before using stun guns to take him down. we will have continuing coverage throughout the morning. we also have more information on our website ktvu.com. time now 4:34. an autopsy is scheduled today for an oakland couple. their 15-year-old adopted son stands accused of the deaths. the bodies of 55-year-old robert kamin and susan poff were town stuffed in the back of the family car friday night. police believe the teen strangled them and tried to set fire to the vehicle. the chronical reports the

couple had arguments with their son including him spending too much time at the occupy oakland encampment. police are investigating two shootings that killed two people yesterday morning. it happened outside a house party on 20th avenue near east 18th street. now officers say four people were shot. one died at the scene. one is in critical condition and two others are in stable condition. now that shooting came just after another shooting in west oakland that killed a woman. police do not believe the shootings are related and no arrests have been made. a body found hanging on equipment at the port of oakland have been identified in the fatal stabbing of a teenage mother. the coroner confirms to the san francisco chronical that it is investigating the death of 19- year-old henry leon as a suicide. his body was found yesterday afternoon. leon is suspected of stabbing

and killing 15-year-old mirna inside her family's home friday night. police say he is the father of the girl's nine-month-old baby. also this morning richmond police continue to investigate the brutal assault of an elderly woman. the 81-year-old was found severely beaten in the parking lot of the big o tire shop sat morning. police say she is in critical but stable condition. people in the community say the woman lives near the tire shop and is known to take early morning walks in the area. up in sacramento investigators want to know why a driver who crashed into a train ignored the warning signals. three people inside an suv were killed on saturday including a toddler. a fourth person is in the hospital with serious injuries. investigators who reviewed video of the crash said warning lights were flashing and the crossing arms were down but the driver went around them. people who live in the area say

it's something they see drivers do often. >> people do it all the time. i don't know why they do it. >> 50 passengers were on the train at the time of the crash. 15 were examined at the scene six were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. sheriff deputies are investigating the stabbing death of four men that left a wedding reception. a group of men walked up to the victims and got into an argument. there is no word yet on the condition of the victims. two of the suspects are described as latino men in their early 20s. 4:37 is the time right now. walnut creek police officers are investigating a series of fights that injured three officers and landed nine people in handcuffs. the first fight was reported just after 1:30 sunday morning at a parking garage on locust street. one person was taken to the hospital with a head injury. two others were arrested on

suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. a few minutes later police responded to another fight involving at least 15 people at the cinco demay owe restaurant. the officer suffered minor injuries. kizer nurses are preparing to stage a one-day strike tomorrow. that strike is in support of the national union for health care workers that represent mental health and optical employees. they are protesting proposed cuts to health care coverage and retirement benefits and what they call the short staffing of mental health service. kaiser has hired workers to replace those on strike. pg&e will demonstrate new cutting edge gas leak detection technology. the car mounted detection

block his request. we are hearing from a survivor of a florida freeway pileup that killed ten people. burt thomas says he was driving down interstate 75 around 4:00 a.m.. suddenly his car was envelop by heavy fog and smoke. he slammed on his brakes. stopping next to a semi truck that pulled over. >> rolled my window and heard thuds and crashes. it was so thick i couldn't tell you where they were coming from. and slowly after that i started hearing what i thought were explosions. >> police say at least five cars and six tractor trailers were involved. many of them catching fire. about 18 other people were injured. rescuers say the smoke and fog was so thick that they couldn't see the injured people and had to rely on their screens to help find them. a sacramento woman is behind bars after a crash that killed two men on interstate 80

in fairfield. the chp says 42-year-old michelle henry was speeding early yesterday morning when she hit a ford explorer. the explorer rolled across two lanes of traffic and ended up on its roof. a passenger inside that suv got out of the car and was then hit by another car. both he and the driver of the explorer died. henry was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. and possession of a loaded firearm. in election news this morning both mitt romney and newt gingrich hold campaign rallies in jacksonville, florida. romney has pulled ahead of gingrich in recent polls. both rom and gingrich are courting latino voters. at cam pin events they reached out to the state's large puerto rican and cuban populations. >> we'll be behind the voices of freedom here and there. >> the people of puerto rico

make the decision they want to be a state, i will work actively to help them. >> ron paul has campaigned very little in florida. he was many maine over the weekend. rick santorum will be back on the campaign trail today with stops in missouri and florida. that is after he canceled appearances in florida yesterday to be at the side of his three-year-old daughter who was rushed to the hospital with ammonia. she is the youngest of santorum's seven children diagnosed at birth with a syndrome similar to down syndrome. however they say it's much too late. they believe she should have been proactive in stopping the protests rather than responding to the violence afterwards. >> this is her city.

she is the elected official. she is the director of oakland and she needs to lead and she doesn't know how to do that. >> there are two certified recall drives. they need to call 20,000 ballot signatures by may but quan backers say the mayor is gaining more support in recent weeks. they say people realize she needs more time to address oakland's issues. the main website for the city of sacramento is still down after it was hacked over the weekend. someone got into the city's main website and two related sites. now the hacker left a message. it reads hacked by el-mhuammcd. now the city is working to restore the website. santa rosa school board will hold a town hall meeting to discuss the closure of an elementary school. they want to close doyle park elementary.

the school has struggled with poor hackic performance and low enrollment. losing more than $180,000 a year. 90% of doyle park students are economicically disadvantage. if the school closes, students would be transferred to nearby schools. tonight's meeting at the herbert slater middle school is at 6:30. time now is 4:49. the dining room at st. anthony's will close on wednesday so it can under go a major transformation. the original caning room is out of space. it will be depolished and replaced by a $23 million multistory building that includes a dining room on street level. during that time guests will eat in a nearby dining hall. >> when we first opened this in october 4th we served 400 meals. today we are serving 3,000. a lot of the same hardware and kitchen equipment. >> major donors have kicked in

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. we are learning more information about the dui arrest of san francisco 49er aldon smith. miami beach police say the rookie defensive end was pulled over early sat morning after he was seen swerving if and out of the lanes. police say smith failed a sobriety test at the scene. he was taken to jail and posted

a $1,000 bond. the 49ers issued a statement saying they are aware of the arrest but are reserving further comment because it is an ongoing legal matter. more than 7,000 people turned out to see their favorite oakland a players at fan fest. they chatted with fans while signing t-shirts and other memorabilia. team owner lew wolf was there. he's been pushing to move the a's to san jose. it has to be approved by major league baseball because the giants own the right to san jose. the giants will hold their fan fest this coming saturday. it's from 10:00 until 3:00. dozens of alumni players are expected. saturday is the game that individual game tickets go on sale at 8:00 a.m.. parking and admission to the fan fest is free. >> i want to go back to sal to check on the commute. any problems?

>> nothing right now. as a matter of fact we are doing pretty well. traffic continues to look good if you are driving around the bay. let's go ahead and start off with the golden gate bridge and that traffic looks pretty good. also the morning commute looks good at the bay bridge toll plaza with no major problems. time for the forecast. this is interstate 280 and that traffic looks very nice. time for the forecast with steve. we have a very weak system slicing by. i can get out of the way and show it to you. there is not much there. it's run into tremendous condition. dry weather is back. mostly cloudy morning and then partly sunny to mostly sunny in the afternoon. but this is a very weak front. high clouds and then mostly sunny. 50s and 60s. starting off with 40s and 50s just because of the cloud cover. there is fog out toward the eastern part of contra costa county and also out toward the valley. most of this is just high cloud ban. that is about all that is left of this front. which is nothing.
