good morning. picking up the pieces after a violent weekend of occupy protests in oakland. the cleanup effort that is under way this morning. we are live in san francisco this morning where an early morning power outage effected many people. we'll talk about when the lights will come back on. and we're live in downtown walnut creek where drunken fights are becoming a major problem out here. we'll tell you what lead to nine arrests just this weekend. plus pulling away from the pack. the revealing results of a new poll as florida's republican primary gets closer. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning, to you.

welcome. it's monday, january 30th, i love the new studio. >> thank you, you too. >> i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. we are in our new studio. what is really exciting we can look right over here and there is steve paulson in his new weather center. >> i am indeed. we have cloudy skies this morning. temperatures a little warmer because of the cloud cover. it's a weak system it won't do much. then we'll have partly sunny skies later on. so cloudy skies in the morning. a little bit of sun in the afternoon. temperatures not as nice as the weekend but still okay. mild upper 50s low to mid 60s. here is sal. good morning, right now southbound 680 as you pass mission that traffic is moving along nicely. if you're heading far beer the south bay there is a big crash. northbound 880 two lanes blocked with an overturned vehicle. now let's move along and take a look at this crash on the map. southbound 880 you are really taking a beating.

happening now in san francisco pg&e crews are working to restore power to hundreds of customers. the utility believes an under ground power -- these are live pictures. pg&e crews out there working. traffic lights on vaness and eddie were effected. they are working now. 230 customers are still without power. that is down from 370 earlier. coming up we'll have a live report from tara moriarty. your time is 6:02. oakland city hall reopens for business today. two days after occupy protestors broke into city hall and caused a lot of damage. ktvu allie rasmus is joining us now getting reaction and telling us how mayor quan is reacting to this and how the protestors are reacting.

>> reporter: $2 million since october. that's what it cost the city to clean up graffiti and vandalism here at frank ogawa plaza. if you take a look at the outside perimeter, you can see the writing on the concrete post. there is also fairly large chalk drawing out here. after saturday's huge occupy oakland demonstration there was also damage inside city hall. she took us and showed us the damage. inside 100-year-old model of the historic city hall was toppled over. there was inside windows broken. an american flag was taken out of city hall and burned. city administrators say the buildings sprinkler system and electrical circuits in the elevator room were damaged. the mayor says occupy oakland

demonstration -- the $2 million number doesn't have the cost of allocating police to these demonstrations. she responded to the requests that they are planning more occupy oakland. >> i think they have to be really careful. being around an airport is a federal fence. i think everyone is losing patience. you know. i think they are hurting the movement. >> reporter: now this all start the saturday afternoon around 3:00. several hundred protestors took to the streets for a day long demonstration in support of oakland oakland. a group of 500 people tried to take over a convention center building. police did notelet that happen. that lead to clashes between protestors and police later in the evening some of the protestors tried to go to a ymca building and ended up at

city hall. all together 400 people were arrested. police say some of the people they arrested had hammers and fives with them. other weapons. police said they were going to use against the officers. and police in turn used tear gas and rubber bullets on the protestors. >> the cops were extremely rough. a lot of the cops took it beyond theof keeping the beyond the job of keeping the peace. >> reporter: they had a meeting out here yesterday evening. there was no problems at that event. however, according to occupy oakland's website, they are planning another day of action against police on february 6th. that is a week away from today. new york city police arrested 12 people after a solidarity march. 300 people marched through lower manhattan to protest what they call excessive force.

it made most of the can arrests for discorderly conduct. chicago protestors held up a large sign reading the 1% are kills us. no word on any problems or arrests in chicago. now we will have continuing coverage of the occupy protest throughout the morning here in the bay area and across the country. we also have more information any time of day on our website ktvu.com. all right our time is 6:06 this morning. police in walnut creek investigating several weekend fights on locust street. ktvu lorraine blanco is out there now with more. the details and how two people ended up in the hospital. lorraine. >> reporter: yeah all the problems did happen on locust street from a bloody fight up here in this parking garage to a big brawl over at cinco de mayo restaurant. a few weeks ago someone recorded this cell phone video

of a fight add shiro. that is a sushi restaurant. fights sent two men to the hospital. nine people got locked up and three officers suffered minor injuries. just last week the city council here started talking about serious plans to crack down on the drunken fighting. >> that has lot a lot of elements -- that has a lot of elements in it for me. not just safety but cleanliness. i want to make sure we are investing in our downtown. >> reporter: proposed ordnance would give the city more power to penalize problem establishments. reporting live in downtown walnut creek lorraine blanco ktvu channel 2 news. in election news this morning mitt romney and newt gingrich continue to attack each other in their last campaign appearances in florida

moves south. 40s on the temps. i didn't see any reports yesterday. at fair fee or vacaville. a quiet pattern. they say it's very, very still and mild. 52 in the city tells you why because of the cloud cover right there. there is plenty of clouds upstream. they are diving south and really not organized. one more system on wednesday will give us a mostly cloudy day. after that everything says sunny and mild and warm. really dry and quiet her. no rain in sight which is not good. 50s upper 50s low to mid 60s here. antioch and oakland 64 degrees. santa rosa -- redwood city, san bruno, san mateo 60s. about the same toward santa cruz and morgan hill. so mostly sunny tuesday. a little cool down in the

welcome back. 6:13. to iraqi officials say that are outraged that the united states is flying surveillance drone planes over iraq. the state department says the drones are protecting the american embassy and the 11,000 people that work there now that american troops have left iraq. however, the iraqi officials say those drones are an invasion of iraq sovereignty. this morning u.n. inspectors are continuing a three-day tour of the iran nuclear facilities. this comes as the west is imposing new sanctions on iran. iranian president says he's willing to restart international talks about his nation's nuclear program. republican presidential candidates are rallying voters in florida this hour. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom. alison. mitt romney has a lot of

confidence about tomorrow's vote in florida. the most recent polls include three out this morning show he has a lead over newt gingrich. now let's take a look here at one of mitt romney's events this morning. they are both holding events in jacksonville this morning. romney came out swinging against gingrich. >> i think the real season he hasn't done so well connecting with the people of florida is that the people actually saw him in the debates and listened to his background and his experience and learned that he was paid $1.6 million to be a lobbiest for freddie mac. they said that's not what we want in the white house. >> reporter: let's take a look at newt gingrich arriving at his event. gingrich just said he believes he's getting a late surge of support in florida and will stay in the race no matter what. florida governor rick scott is predicting that mitt romney will win his state. i'll have more live coverage of what the candidates are saying this morning during my next

update in about an hour. for now we are live in washington, d.c.. rick santorum will be back on the campaign trail today with stops in missouri and minnesota. both states with upcoming caucuses. that is after he canceled appearances in florida yesterday to be at the side of his three-year-old daughter that was rushed to the hospital with ammonia. she's the youngest diagnosissed at bit with a rare condition similar to down syndrome. he appeared over the weekend at a town hall event in maine ahead of the caucus there is on february 4th. 6:16. a hearing continues for the gunman that tried to assassinate president ronald reagan. authorities are considering a request that john hinckley junior be allowed longer visits to his mother's home in virginia. his lawyers are also asking far permanent release. he's been held in a mental hospital since that failed 1981

assassination attempt. federal prosecutors want to block hinckley's request. they say he's still a threat. overnight a magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck the coast of peru. it was located 170 miles from the capitol city of lima. ica suffered major damage in 2007 but right now there are no reports of injuries or damage there. a pair of earthquakes hit near the geysers in sonoma county last night. first one at l -- first one 3.1. the second one 3.2. there are no reports of any injuries or damage. there have been four earthquakes 3.0 and greater in the geyser area. 6:17. nurses at kentuckyer preparing a stage of one day strike tomorrow.

it's in support of the national union of health care workers that represent mental health and optical employees. that are protesting cuts to health care coverage and retirement benefits and what they call the short staffing of mental health services. kaiser has hired replacement nurses to work during the 24 hour strike. the santa rosa school board will hold a town hall meeting tonight to discuss the possible closure of an elmen school. the board wants to close doyle park elementary school. the school has struggled with poor academic performance and poor enrollment. 90% of doyle park students are economicically disadvantage. if the school closes, students will would be transferred to nearby schools. tonight's meeting is at herbert slater middle school. sal, you have the roads ready for the drivers?

>> i'm trying dave and pam. we have the one glitch. remember southbound 880 at bro call road. if you are driving to san jose. this is an easy one. this road is really messed up but there is some decent alternates. 237 is not yet crowded and neither is 680 and some of the side roads if you are local and know some of the side roads. those will work. later in the morning they may not. right now they are working. chp says they want to get the crash out of the way relatively soon. southbound 880 at brokaw two lanes blocked there. let's take a look at he 680 westbound everything looks good good. the morning commute toll plaza getting a lile crowded here. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. we have cloudy skies. very quiet pattern here. there is not much left of this

system. satellite pictures shows we'll have a cloudy morning. there is a lot of clouds out there. it looks like after wednesday we'll be done for awhile as the pattern goes back to dry. the seven and tip days are very, very dry for us. 51 now in the city. the warmest. everyone else in the low to mid 40s. system moves off pretty fast. sun later on today. lots upstream but again it's not really favorable for anything expect for cloud cover. still a dry pattern. but it's an extreme weak front. patchy fog out there. mostly sunny later on. 50s and 6:s. temperatures coming down after a really nice weekend. it will be a little cooler and mostly sunny tuesday. then morning low will be cooler tomorrow. cloud it up wednesday. thursday after that we clear it out and friday into the weekend

lots of sunshine mild to warm temperatures. pam and dave. sounds good. facebook is awarding hackers for finding flaws on its website. the menlo park base company is giving hackers debt cards worth up to $5,000 depending on the severity of the flaw they find. canada announced their president is stepping-- cannon said the president is stepping down. the doesn't chairman will take over as the company's president. the tragedy surrounding the crippled cruise ship may not go away for awhile now. the reason investigators say that could be sitting in the water far long time. buying a home in san francisco could be getting more expensive. the good news that could make it easier to get a home. good morning, westbound 80 traffic looks pretty good at getting out to the mccarthur maze. another update straight ahead. over 200,000 people are hospitalized every year

more expensive thanks to a proposed construction fee. according to the san francisco examiner the fee would require developers to pay almost $6 per square foot of work. now the fee is being proposed by muni and the money would go toward funding transportation projects but that fee is also facing strong opposition from residential builders they say it will be a huge cost burden and most small builders will not be able to afford it. the overturned cruise ship could stay in the water for another ten months. italian officials say it will take ten months to completely remove the ship. partially due to the rough seas in the area. the costa concordia flipped over on january 13th after hitting the wreath. search crews found a woman body's bringing the death toll to 17. a body found at the port of oakland has been identified of

a suspect in the -- san francisco chronical says the alameda county coroner is investigating the death of 19- year-old henry leeas leon. he is accused of stabbing and killing -- police say leon is the father of the girl's nine- month-old baby. we are learning more information about the dui arrest of san francisco 49er aldon smith. the rock key defensive end was pulled over early saturday morning after he was seen swerving in and out of lanes. police say smith failed a sobriety test at the scene. he was taken to jail and posted a $1,000 bond. the 49ers issued a statement saying they are aware of the arrest but reserving further comment because it's an ongoing legal matter. civil rights drama about the plight of african american maids is the big movie winner

on ktvu channel 2 morning news in our brand new studio. it's monday, january 30th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. thank you for waking up with us. time is 6:30. happening now pg&e crews are working to restore a power outage in san francisco. ktvu tara moriarty joins us now from the city with how many people are effected and what caused this problem. tara. >> reporter: for the past hour and a half pg&e crews have been working on what they are calling an under ground equipment problem. if you look behind me in the distance you can see the truck that pulled up about an hour and a half ago. there is a manhole there on the ground. they had that barricaded. they have removed the barriers and moved downs street. 230 customers are without power. and even the street lamps are out of power. some of these apartments seem

like they do have their lights on, some don't. but again we are told 230 customers are without power. the good news is that traffic on eddie is no longer blocked off. police were out here earlier and they had three city blocks on eddie between franklin and polk quarantined off. the power outage stretched from vaness to hide along eddie. they were concerned about vaness the traffic lights being out because that is a heavily traveled row. that is why police were out here. the outage began at 7:00 last night. officially 300 people were in the dark. pg&e crews have been working on the problem overnight. they expect to have electricity back on sometime between 8:30 and 9:00. we are live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:32. the city of oakland still adding up all the damage caused by occupy protests over the weekend that left a mess at city hall, frank ogawa plaza

and the ymca. allie rasmus is here to tell us what is next for the city and the protestors. >> reporter: a lot of cleanup has happened since this big demonstration on saturday. there were city crews out here power washing graffiti. but you can still see some of the writing on the concrete posts outside frank ogawa plaza. there is a really large chalk drawing out here in the middle of the plaza. it has cost the city of oakland $2 million since october to clean up graffiti and vandalism at frank ogawa plaza. when things are not chaotic, there was also damage inside oakland city hall. the front doors were chained shut this weekend after occupy protestors entered the building. a 100 model of city hall was damaged when it was topple over. flags were removed. and city administrators say the sprinkler system and electrical circuits were also damaged saturday night.

the mayor says occupy oakland is taking a toll on the city's resources. >> constant vandalism almost every saturday somebody has had graffiti. somebody's had their window broken. it's getting tiring. >> reporter: it all started saturday afternoon around 3:00. that is when several hundred occupy protestors took to the streets for a day long demonstration. later in the group 500 people tried to take over a vacant building. they wanted to repurpose the building as a community center. that's when they clashed with police. later they went to a ymca building. at 9:00 some protestors started storming oakland city hall. 400 people were arrested. police say some of the people they arrested had hammers and knives, tear gas canisters with them. they also used tear gas canisters and rubber bullet on the crowd. we talked to man that was at this weekends demonstration.

he didn't condone the violence that happened but people have a right to protest. >> the message is people had enough. people are upset. people should have every right no be angry. i mean what happened you know they are trying to do something good. something different and they are met by violence by the police. >> reporter: some occupy okay land supporters gathered here yesterday evening for a general assembly meeting. there were no problems at that event. but they are planning another day of action for police on february 6th. that is a week from today. live in oakland allie rasmus. time now 6:35. meantime oakland mayor jean quan is facing two certify recall drives. a lot of the criticism is over the way she handled the occupy protest. coming up at 6:45 what one recall organizer says about arthritis weekend's occupy clash. the clock is ticking for occupy protestors in

washington, d.c.. the national park service has ordered protestors to shut down their encampment by noon today eastern time which is now less than three hours away. the eviction comes after a congressional hearing questioned whether its legal for protestors to sleep overnight at the parks. >> if they come to arrest me for camping they can take me to jail. i'll be out the next day. >> the park service put up notices yesterday telling protestors to leave. one protestor went tent to tent taking down the notices and there you can see what happened after that. youtube video shows park police trying to arrest the man before using a stun gun to take him down. we'll continue our coverage of the occupy protest throughout the morning here in the bay area and across the country. we also have more information any time of day on our website ktvu.com. 6:36. an autopsy will be held later today about the murders of an oakland couple. their 15-year-old adopted son is accused of the deaths.

bodies of robert kamin and susan poff were found in the back of the family car friday night. the teenager strangled them and tried to set the car on fire. the chronical reports the couple had arguments with their son including the fact he spent too much time in the occupy oakland encampment. candle light vigil will mark 23 years since the disappearance of ilene. she was just 13 years old when she vanished on her way home. font's vigil will retrace her steps -- tonight's vigil will retrace her steps along that route. that vigil starts at 7:00 and will be capped off with a prayer service at st. raymond catholic church. 6:37. later this morning pg&e will show off new high-tech technology for spotting gas leaks. now the cars will have mounted

detection devices. these devices work by picking up small amounts of natural gas in the atmosphere in realtime. pg&e says they are 11,000 times more -- they are 1,000 times more sensitive than the instruments they have now. they hope the yacht case will help boost water taxi service. 2013 they will have two america cup world series events this year. port officials will take bids from potential taxi service providers in the coming months. they also tell the paper they hope to have a plan in place for the finals. 6:38 is the time. back over to sal. i know there was one big problem for the commute. how does it look? >> we are looking at that, pam, and the rest of the commute which is getting busier. let's look at interstate 880 north and southbound. you can see that traffic is moving along relatively well here. we have a look at the bay

bridge toll plaza and that is getting a lot more crowded here at the toll plaza. about a 10-12 minute delay. good news san jose they cleared the accident. 880 at brokaw. northbound 101 a little slow. good thing they got that out of the way when they did the traffic has quickly recovered. let's go if steve. thank you. a very good morning. it's a weak system. it's dragging across a lot of high clouds. we'll have a cloudy morning and partly sunny. one more system on wednesday which will give us the same. everything else looks really dry. 5-10 day outlook very stable pattern. west coast looks hoe hum.

about 8:30 or 9:00 this morning. mitt romney has pulled ahead of newt gingrich in the latest polls. ahead of tomorrow's primaries in florida. both presidential candidates have full schedule of campaign events today in florida. we now have exclusive video of one of the violent fights that happened in walnut creek over the weekend. ktvu channel 2 reporter lorraine blanco joins us with a look at the new video. >> reporter: the most violent fight happened in this parking gram of cocaine on locust street. police arrested two men with assault from a deadly weapon. they are now reviewing how the problem started. we got aload of that footage and you can see the fight starts on an elevator and continues into the parking area. police found the man semi conscious on the ground and bleeding. he was taken to the hospital with serious facial wounds and

head injuries. police arrested nine people and three police officers suffered minor injuries. >> people can get aggressive. lose control when they drink. that happens at parties or bars. >> reporter: coincidentally the city council talked about serious plans to crack down on the drunken fighting just lack week. a proposed ordnance would give the city more power for power accomplishments. they are planning on putting more officers on the streets. reporting live in downtown walnut creek. our time 6:46. meantime criticsover oakland mayor jean quan are talking about this weekend's occupy clash. they are commending mayor quan for taking a harder stance over the weekend. however they say it's too late. they think she should have been more proactive in stopping the protest. >> this is her city. she is the elected official.

she is the director of oakland and she needs to lead. she doesn't know how to do that. >> there is two certified recall drives against mayor quan. they need to gather 20,000 valid signatures each by may. mayor quan sporters say the mayor is gaining -- we are flare a survivor of -- we are hearing from a survivor of a huge freeway accident in florida. suddenly his car was enveloped not only by heavy fog but smoke from a grass fire. >> rolled my window down and started hearing thuds and crashes and it was so thick i couldn't even tell you where they were coming from. and slowly after that started hearing what i thought were
