. >> reporter: a pedestrian has been hit by a car on a busy east bay street. a live update coming up from the scene. city leaders assess the damage from this weekend's occupy oakland protest and coming up we'll tell but plans already in the works for another demonstration next week. just days after the city of wall night creek discussed ways to prevent violent bar brawls, it's now investigating fights that sent two people to the hospital and injured three officers. also, the power has been out for 12 hours now. the problem facing a san francisco neighborhood right now. it's monday, january 30th. let's go right to sal. breaking news. >> this happened on doolittle drive on hagan burg. this is very close to the oakland international airport. i do have a map. this crash happened about 6:30 this morning, maybe a little bit before that. if you drive to the oakland airport or on hegenberger or 98th, this may or may not effect you because doolittle connect where those two highway and streets come together. so we're asking you to leave a little bit early as you head to the airport. we have a reporter live on the scene. but again, , doolittle drive, avoid that area because of a crash, a very serious crash. back to the desk.

>> , -- thank you, sal. >> reporter: city workers were out here all weekend with their power washers and cleaning up. you can still see some writing and out in the middle here there is a pretty big chalk drawing. mayor jean quan says all of this has cost the city $2 million since occupy oakland began. when things are chaotic outside, there's also damage inside. the front doors are chained shut. 100-year-old model of city hall was damaged when it was toppled over and inside there were windows shattered and flags burned inside and outside the plaza and a sprinkler system

was damage. the mayor saysock pi oakland is taking a toll on the city. >> i think they have to be -- the mayor says occupy oakland is taking a toll on the city. i think they have to be careful. i think they've been treating us like a playground and i think everybody is losing patience and i think they are hurting the movement. >> reporter: the protest started at 3:00 on saturday when several occupiers took to the streets for a day-long celebration. a group of about 500 of them tried to take over a vacant building at the convention center. they clashed with police. and then they marched on. 400 people were arrested. police say some of the people they arrest - hammers and knives.

police in turn used tier gas and rubber bullets to control the crowd. we talked to a man who was at the demonstration. he says he doesn't condone violence but he says people have the right to protest. >> people have had enough, enough is enough. people have every white to be angry. three are trying to do something good. something different and change because things are not working and they are met with violence by the police. >> reporter: occupy oakland members met at frank ogawa plaza last night. there were no problems at that general gathering. but on their website, the group says it's planned an approved a day of action on february 6th. it's called "a day of action against police brutality" and that's planned for february 6th, a week from today. back to you. 400 arrested protesters yesterday as they left oakland's detention facility. those protesters face several charges including failure to dispurse and asaul. they are defending themselves. they accuse the oakland police of going overboard with the use of flash bangs and tier gas. we have continuing coverage on our website. go to ktvu.com and look at the link on the top of the pankg. happening now, pg&e crews are working to restore power to hundreds of customers. the utility believes and underground equipment failure caused the outage around 7:00. traffic lights on eddie were affected but are now working again. pg&e says some 230 customers are still without power. electricity is expected to be back on sometime between 8:30 and 9:00. our time is 7:05. well, newt gingrich and mitt

romney are still attacking each other at campaign events in florida. this is ahead of the prime tomorrow there. here's what gingrich said about mitt romney just about an hour ago at a campaign event in jacksonville. >> why would anybody in the establishment think that a massachusetts moderate, which is a liberal by republican standards, proaboration, progun control, protax increase, progay rights, why would they think that he's gonna be able to debate president obama? >> coming up we'll bring you a live report about mitt romney's equally tough words about newt gingrich today. also today, president obama takes part in an interview with youtube and google plus about his state of the union address. the interview will be held through google plus hangout. it's a new video chat room on

google's new feature. this all happens at 2:30 this afternoon. well, president obama will be back here in the bay area next month. the prod will be in san francisco february 16th to attend a $35,000-a-plate dinner. that will be followed by a big reception at a still-to-be decided public venue where tickets will range from $100 to $10,000. this will be the president's fourth visit here in a year. his last visit in october was also a fund-raiser. the price tag for b.a.r.t.'s future fleet cars is raising some eyebrows. mainly because the work will be perm formed out of the u.s. "the chronicle" reports the base for each car is $300

three-day tour of the country anuclear facilities everyone the inspection comes as the u.s. is imposing new sanctions on iran. this includes a decision by the european union to ban iranian oil imports in july. it looks like this is working since mahmoud ahmadinejad said he's willing to restart talks over his country's oil program. oil fell below $99 in asia. however, gas prices in the u.s. have increased a few cents. analysts say the crude oil markets are volatile. iran is threatening to close a vital passage that could send oil prices to $120 to $150 a barrel. 7:16. this weekend is starting with some pretty tough talk from the top republican presidential candidates in florida. alison burns reports new polls that are out today show who has the most mom -- momentum.

. we're continuing to follow breaking news in oakland. police are on the scene of a fatal pedestrian accident. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from oakland with an update on the crash and the situation. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. i just spoke with a source within oakland police. they tell me that this was, indeed, an accident, that a car hit a man, who is now dead. we're standing here at the corner of doolittle and harborway, where police have it core denned off, about --

cordoned off, about a two mile stretch that goes down to swan way. if we take a live look at swan way, we can see the car that apparently hit this pedestrian is a silver lexus is. the driver's side door is open and the driver is now speaking with the police. there are five squad cars there. we understand that alameda and both oakland police are on the scene. the body and the car are located about 100 yards apart from each other. and underneath the yellow tarp is the body of the man that was -- i don't know if he was on the shoulder or if he was trying to cross the road but it ended up that there was some right front end of the car so we believe that's where the impact happened. again, we do have a lot of road closures here in this area. this is a very major -- it's a thoroughfare here where cars can get through from alameda up to oakland. so there are some definite detours that are in place right now. again, one person is dead and

we have the investigation unit arriving on scene momentarily. we assume that the coroner will arrive on the scene as soon as that investigation is complete. right now we're gonna head over to sal castanedo to find out how you might want to circumvent this area this morning in order to -- in order to get around. sal? >> one of the ways you can do it, we wanted to show you that the harborway parkway is one of the routes. i want to show you on the map here. a lot of people come down from the island of alameda and they use doolittle drive to get down to hegenberger road. they go down -- maybe there's some industry down there. i know that u.p.s. is down there. this is where hen berger is -- hegenberger is. you can use the area around the golf course and then cowen. that's the best way to do it unless you want to stay on the

freeway. the newschopper2 is showing the area completely closed off. it will be closed until further notice. 7:24. back to the desk. a series of fights in walnut creek landed nine people in hand duff -- handcuffs. lorraine blanco is live with more. lorraine? >> reporter: well, and the most serious fight, cops arrested two men for assault with a deadly weapon. the problem started in this parking garage elevator. we obtained an exclusive copy. you can see how the fight starts on the el vaster and then continues into the parking area. when police arrived, they found one of the men semiconscious on the ground and bleeding. in all, three fights sent people to jail and three police officers have minor injuries. coincidently, before these problems the city started to

the hospital with minor injuries. a deadly pileup on a florida freeway. coming up for you at 7:45, with one -- what one of the survivors is saying about the crash where ten people were killed. an autopsy is scheduled for today in the murders of an oakland couple. their 15-year-old adopted son is in juvenile hall accused of the deaths. the bodies of the 55-year-old man and the 50-year-old woman were found in the back of the family car friday night. police believe the teenager strangled them and then tried to set the car on fire. "the chronicle" reports the couple did have arguments with from son including how much time he was spending in the occupy oakland encamepment. police are investigating -- encampment. police are investigating a shooting around 2:00 a.m. outside of a house party on 20th avenue near east 18th street. police say four people were shot. one of them died at the scene.

another is in critical condition. two others are in stable condition. police don't believe the sheetings are connected. so far, no arrests have been made. a new technology to detect natural gas leaks is being unveiled this morning. the car mounted detection devices were developed by sunnyvale based company pakola. pg&e has purchased two devices, saying they are 1,000 times more sensitive than current devices. buying a new home in san francisco could become more expensive because of a proposed construction fee. according to the scwt san francisco examiner "the fee would require the developers to pay almost $6 per square foot of home. the fee is proposed by muni and the money would go to funding

transportation projects. but residential builders say it would be a huge cost burden and most of them would not be able to afford it. let's check the traffic and the commute, including, sal, that fatal incident near the oakland airport. >> that's right. in case you have not heared. doolittle drive is closed from alameda to oakland. a lot of people use that to go to hegenberger. right now, we're looking at slow traffic in the south bay, 85. it's very slow. 280 is slow approaching highway 17. if you are looking at the peninsula, highway 101, southbound, a little bit slow now from san mateo. and then across the way, hayward, union city and fremont, the traffic is going to be busy as well. also, the morning commute on 880 is doing okay. if you want to get to the hegenberger road area from alameda use hare boreway

investors say google's growing is slowing down. investors are hoping google can reinvent itself. burt thomas says he was driving on interstate 75, south of gainesville, at about 4:00 a.m. yesterday morning. suddenly, his car was surrounded by heavy smoke and fog. he says he slammed on his brakes, he stopped right next to a semitruck. he called his wife and then he started hearing the sound of cars crashing. >> he had told me that in front of him there were cars and behind him there were cars. and they were stacking up.

and i was like like organization my -- i was like oh, my gosh. the chp says 42-year-old michelle henry was speeding early yesterday morning when she hit a ford explorer. that explorer rolled across two lanes of traffic ending up on its roof. a passenger inside that explorer got out of the car and was then hit by another car. both he and the driver of the explorer were killed. henry was looked -- was looked on dui as well as possessing a lieded firearm. oakland city hall is reopening this morning, two days after language occupy protests led to damage inside. protesters broke into the building on saturday, breaking

committed suicide while deployed in afghanistan last april. three fellow marines are charged with assaulting, threatening and humiliating him. it is ten minutes before 8:00, the state assembly must vote on a court-funding bill today or it -- or it will be dead for the rest of the year. at issue, who controls the system's $3 billion budget. the bill proposes to remove the funding control from an independent office and give it to the legislature. california's chief justice opposes the bill, saying, legislative control would inject politics into the judiciary branch. a popular skate park in san jose has been saved, at least for now. lake cunningham was in danger of closing because of the city's problems. so far the donors pitched in $30,000 to keep the park open through the end of the year. the city and some volunteers

friend is saying. what's going on, tara? >> reporter: well, there are a lot of questions for the alameda police. we did speak to the victim's friend. he said they were pulled over by alameda police and after that things got worse. if you take a look behind me you can see the street is blocked off at doolittle at harborway. you can see the windshield of a silver lexus that's smashed in. that's where police say the driver struck and killed a pedestrian around 6:00 this morning. police are interviewing that male driver. we don't know howfs he was going but from what we can see in our aerial shot, the body, covered by the yellow tarp, and the car are about 100 yards away from peach other -- from each other. here's the victim's friend. >> we got pulled over. the police -- alameda police pulled us over. we got towed. we was walking. my friend knocked over a guy.

the main website fob the city of sacramento is still down this morning after being hacked over the weekend. someone got into the city's main website. the hacker left a message that read hacked by el muhammed, this turkish hacker. security experts say it's probably just somebody trying to show off. the city is trying to get that website back up and running. governor brown's says the state's proposed rail system will cost a lot less than the $100 billion.
