i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, january 31st. happening now, a strike at kaiser hospitals is scheduled to start this minute. thousands of employees statewide are expected to take part. ktvu's lorraine blanco joins us live from oakland with a look at what's going on there. good morning, lorraine. >> reporter: good morning. the strike just started. you can see them right over here in front of the hospital right now on howe street in oakland. the national union of healthcare workers which has 4400 workers, mostly mental health and eye care professionals. they say the walkout is about wages and benefits as well as better staffing and care for benefits. >> this is an organization that earned $5.6 billion since 2009. corporate executives earning up to eight pensions. really, completely inexcusable when it comes to their mission to deliver care to the -- to

the working public. >> we've been meeting for a year with nuhw. our last proposal was made by us, which was the first proposal six months ago. we've been waiting for six months to get a response to our first proposal from nuhw. >> reporter: and you are looking at walnut creek. there is a lot of extra security out at all hospitals. the hospitals will spend close to $14 million on replacement workers and security. back out here live in oakland, you can see the strikers down the street. they just started just a couple of minutes ago. the california nurses' association and the building engineers union are also out here. altogether, kaiser is expecting thousands of employers to walk out. the hospital says the strike will not affect patient care. so go ahead and go to your appointments and procedures as

usual unless you've talked to them about changing appointments. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. a police chase ended with a crash, a gas leak and evacuations in san pablo. it happened at the ran chose condos on el portal drive. ktvu's allie rasmus is live at the crash scene. >> reporter: good morning. the car was traveling on el portal drive. the driver was going pretty fast because she was trying to avoid police. the driver crossed all lanes of traffic, pulled into the driveway and crashed into the side of the condo building. you can still see a lot of the damage. the corner is smashed up. if you walk up here, you can see some -- part of the bumper or part of the car. this is what the crash scene looked like. it happened at 9:00. in that video you can see the car is practically sus spended

in the air -- suspended in the air. there are about 100 residents in the rancho complex of condominiums where this happened. luckily, nobody was hurt. >> next thing i knew i saw a car sticking out of that wall over there. it was like, oh, my god. what's just hatched. >> -- what's just happened? >> reporter: police are looking for a male driver and female. they took off running right after the crash happened. this all parted in pinole -- started in pinole. the police tried to pull over the vehicle because the vehicle came up stolen. the driver kept going and ended up crashing here in san pablo. when the car crashed into the wall, it ended up striking a gas main and some gas meters. so pg&e had to come shut the gas off. and pg&e representatives say the gas is still off in this building right now because the inspector with the city of san

pablo has to come out here and make sure everything is good before they turn the gas back on. you can see that's where the gas meters and mains were located. it should look kind of like that building across the driveway. we see the meters to the left and then the individuals gas units and gas mains with the pipe going on the ground. that's what was taken out of here when the crash happened and pinole and san pablo are investigating. they are looking for the driver and passenger who caused all of this mess. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the 15-year-old boy facing murder charges for the deaths of his parents will appear in an alameda county croom today. the alameda county district attorney says he has confessed. police found the bodies friday night outside their oakland home. he will be tried as an adult. he had been in the foster care

system until his adoption ten years ago. east palo alto police are investigating the shooting of a teenager. the 18-year-old victim was shot in the foot. the suspect escaped in a green 1990s pontiac grand am with 20- inch chrome wheels. if you have any information you are asked to call east palo alto police. berkeley city council members are expected to vote tonight on whether to drop wells fargo as the city's bank. some council members say wells fargo is one. banks at the heart of the mortgage meltdown and financial crisis. in a statement, wells fargo says they want to continue the community with meetings. berkeley has banked with san francisco-based wells fargo since 2004. on capitol hill, both democrats and republicans are supporting a bill to ban lawmakers from insider trading. the senate voted 93-2 yesterday

to the south bay. you can see that 85 from los gatos to saratoga, some pretty slow traffic. we also saw a moment ago that 280 is already very slow out of downtown as you head into the west valley and now 1011 slowing from 880 heading north into sunnyvale. you really can't get around it on the major roads. maybe some of the side roads. might be slightly better but everything is getting crowded on the way into the west valley. let's move along and take a look at 237. even from the north san jose area to sunnyvale, we do already have some slow traffic here. i guess it's not that unusual for this time of the morning except for the carpool lanes, which are moving through quite nicely. if you're driving to the san mateo bridge, that traffic moves well. at the bay bridge toll plaza, there's about a 10-minute later. it's about a standard delay. 7:24. let's go to steve. okay. we do have cloudy to mostly cloudy skies out there. a couple of sunbreaks. 30s, 40s and 50s. it looks like a summertime

le" this. both mirkarimi and his wife deny there was any domestic violence. san francisco police need the public's help to find a woman who may have been kidnapped. police received a report on saturday afternoon that two men peat a woman and forced her -- beat a woman and forced her into a car. it happened on courtland avenue. police searched the area but did not find the woman nor the men. the woman was between 18 and 22 years old and was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. 7:31. another occupy oakland demonstration is planned for monday. now the city has a new plan to avoid a repeat of violent clashes that erupted between police and protesters a last weekend. some of the streets looked like a war zone saturday after

for a recent -- responsible for a recent hacker group. 7:34. a sunnyvale man is free on bail this morning after being arrested for a deadly hit and run collision. the sunnyvale department of public safety announced yesterday, they took gordon lee into custody earlier this month for the january 5th incident. investigators say lee hit a 72- year-old man in the crosswalk and then left the scene. lee is facing hit and run and vehicular manslaughter charging. he's expected in court. a woman is in critical condition

after a fire. firefighters found her in the living room of the apartment where the fire started. they say the woman was unconscious and not breathing but they were able to feel a pulse before taking her to the hospital. 7:35, a san jose teacher accused of sexually assaulting two 7-year-old girls is due pack in court today to enter a plea. craig chandler is a teacher at the ob whalely elementary school. both of his alleged victims were students at the school. police say the girls were blindfolded during the sexual assaults. chandler strongly denies all of the charges. some contra costa college students may have defrauded the school when they received aid. college police say they were tipped off by the possibility of friday on the campus. the school is not sure how many people may be involved. but investigators say they want

members are out in full force out across the bay area at all 21 kaiser locations. the union is made up of mostly mental health and eye care professionals. the 24 walkout is about wages and benefit as well as better staffing and care for patients. we just spoke to a clinical psychologist who said the staffing situation is a major concern. >> that person's relationship with their family may be unraveling. they may be losing their job and moreover, these people are suffering. they are hurting. they are not able to carry on usual functions that most of us take for granted or get out of bed. a delay for them for five, four weeks for getting definitive care that they need to really get traction on the problem is crucial. >> reporter: and you're now taking a live look at walnut creek where dozens more are picketing over there. the building engineers' union is all out showing support.
