for many or very low 60s. traffic is moving along slowly in some areas around the bay. we have a big problem in okay land on mccar -- in oakland on mccarthur boulevard. a water main break has been that way since 1:30 this morning. around 4:30 this morning crews began dig into the street and to reach the main. part of mccarthur boulevard is also shut down as work continues. at least a dozen people are without water. the problem began at 1:30. this was a scene when the water main first broke. there were cars parked along the street. so far there are no reports of any water damage. crews have not said when they expect work to be finished and water service to be restored. let's look at the golden gate bridge here. traffic is effected by wet roads and slow traffic in some areas in southern marin

already. this is the san mateo bridge. at 6:01 let's go back to the desk. flu outbreak has shut down the san francisco high school known as si. today's closure comes after 140 students got sick. ktvu tara moriarty joins us live from saint ignatus high school. what is happening on campus today? >> reporter: health officials said they didn't want to take any chance so they shut down to keep this bug from spreading. health officials are supposed to bonn the campus today. last night they did bring in extra cleaning staff to sanitize all of the services that students would come in contact with them. desks, lockers, and door handles. yesterday there were about 90 students that went home early yesterday according to the schools high school website because they were showing signs of that stomach flu. another 50 had called in sick. sot decision was made to cancel

classes for today. there is about 1400 students that attend this private school. they saw other kids coughing and throwing up inside of trash cans. we are told this bug began four days ago and quickly spread. it's highly contagious. it's possible more children could have been exposed. school administrators are telling students to stay home for three days after vomiting has stopped. we are told all sporting events have been canceled but classes should resume tomorrow. we are live in san francisco. a contagious stomach bug is going around -- monroe elementary sent a note home to participants yesterday alerting them about a number of students getting sick with the stomach flu there. last week rincon valley middle

school reported a similar outbreak. 6:03. facebook the world's largest online social network takes a big step today in becoming a public company. ktvu christien kafton is in san francisco now to tell us about the multibillion dollar stock offering idea. >> reporter: we could get a sense of just how much wall street really likes facebook. take a look at the ticker. you can see the ticker there of a punch of publicly traded companies. facebook could be joining that list. analysts estimate that the stock offering could raise as much as $10 billion. with the company ranging $70 to- $100 billion. investment experts say just because facebook is going public, that doesn't necessarily mean the public will be able to share in those profits right away. >> unless you have million

dollars of net worth or more and have a preexisting relationship with a firm. you cannot buy an ipo. if pay ever work today you expect to -- stock would be in the $35-$40. again brokers are just now beginning to arrive in san francisco. we'll find out what they have to say. whether once that ipo sell les down and becomes available to the general investor. we will continue following up on this story and bring that to you as soon as it becomes available to us. for now we are live in san francisco christien kafton. the dow finished the month up almost 3.5%. s & p closed up after gaining

4.4%. the nasdaq did even better finishing up 8% for the month. today the republican race for president moves on to nevada. ahead of saturday's caucuses. romney finished with 46% of the vote. newt gingrich came in second with 32%. rick santorum and ron paul finished third and fourth. coming up a look at a campaign ritteren if -- san francisco city officials still want it to become a reality. yesterday san francisco county transportation authority talked about its plan to bring the high speed service to the city. the plan called fast start could have service in place before the date predicted by the state's high speed rail authority. it would also be cheaper and

still there. it's not wide spread. not everyone. most locations say cloudy or fog. the low cloud deck will be low to clear today. temperatures will be held down today. upper 50s on the highs. we were in the 40s almost everybody. temperatures in the 40s and system falls apart. we're on the tail end of it. there is not a lot there. because of low -- partly sunny to mostly cloudy later on. mostly cloudy at noon. clouds and a little bit of sun later on. 40, 46-49. everybody is right in there. our system moves through. high pressure building in. this next system will ride up and over it. it will not give us a hung warm none. it will be drier. it will if mostly sunny. this morning with the drizzle

the battle over gay marriage will be fought today in the state of washington. the bill is expected to narrowly pass the state senate early tonight. the measure has wide support in the house. washington would become the seventh state to approve gay marriage. our time is 6:12. the state controller has a dire warning for the state of colorado. in a letter that was sent to a lawyer the state will run out of cash in early march if california doesn't borrow more money and delay payments. the legislature has to come up with $3.3 billion or the state will have to issue ious or

possibly delay tax refunds. mitt romney will be protected by the secret service. reportedly romney is not being given secret service protection because of any specific threat but because of the increase in the crowd sizes as the primary season has moved along. it's not unusual for the secret service to protect presidential candidates. herman cain became the first with secret service protection. but as you know he dropped out of the race in december. 6:13. this morning as southern california elementary school teach sir behind bars accused of molesting two dozen students. he took lewd pictures of children wearing blindfolds. they were alerted by the allege facts of a cvs pharmacy technician. he is currently being hold on $2.3 million bail. some say an east bay principal went too far when she suspended a six-year-old boy that was accused of sexually

assaulting a classmate. the alleged incident happened two months ago. the boy's parents say their son was accused of inappropriately touching another student while they were rough housing. the boy now attends another school. terms of the clayton valley high school charter conversion will be discussed tonight at the board of education meeting. the contra costa times say they will consider an amendment giving the charter more time to finalize special education details. the school may also be required to conduct a financial review after the first year of operation. county trustees approve the proposal earlier this month. they have reached a tentative deal with shell on a new three year contract. the union represents thousands of refinery workers including employees that hill this rally

in martinez last night. the deal still has to be ratified by local unions. they tell us they are still at the bargain table and safety issues are a long way away. a strike will end at 7:00 this morning. thousands around the state walked picket lines yesterday. the labor dispute involves 4,000 mental health and optical care employees. they are protesting wage and benefit cuts and long patient wait time. nurses joined the strike in economy with them. two out of three nurses reported for work. 18-year-old man is listed in grave condition this morning following an accident in north albuquerquely. the skate border was not wearing a let met at the time.

the republican race for the white house now turns to nevada and maine the caucuses there this weekend. alison burns reports mitt romney's big win in florida gives him a big advantage moving ahead. >> mitt romney is taking a victory lap on morning tv. he said in several interviews this morning he is feeling good about his chances to take the gop nomination. his win in florida was decisive. he captured 46% of the vote. newt gingrich finished second with merely 32%. gingrich is vowing to stay in the race and this morning romney said that the attacks between -- the two campaigns are toughening him up. >> each candidate has the right to stay in the race as long as they want to. i like the fact we will be honing our message. >> reporter: romney is already on the attack in nevada. here's the mailer his campaign

the roads are a little bit wet from overnight drizzle. maybe a little bit of rain here. not a big rain event but the roads are wet. it might take you a little longer to get to work. bay bridge toll plaza is backed up for a little bit of a delay now. the metering lights are on. that means they will be waiting a little while longer. this morning in walnut creek and concord that traffic looks good. the big accident we have been talking about this morning on highway 12 in red top road the lanes have been reopened there in solano county. which is good news. they have lifted the sig alert. westbound 80 still looking very nice. again slow it down a little bit wet. 6:18 let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a cloudy drizzly morning. hayward, sfo, napa all say fog.

multiple layers here. this low cloud deck and some of it is down on the ground. it was a cloudy morning. we had a little drizzle or light rain. so 40s and that is it. upper 40 rs ps for everyone here. the low -- cloud any in the morning and then sun later on. a lot of low clouds keeping temperatures cool today. upper 50s and very low 60s. your extended forecast shows night and morning fog and taking us into the weekend. it will be dry and mild. a major health insurance company has agreed to provide special therapy for autism patients. blue shield of california will immediately cover the cost of a behavior analysis therapy. that is a well recognized and

effective treatment for autism. the insurance company has refused to cover the treatment saying it was not a medical necessity. there are two campaigns to improve working conditions at the apple factory. change.org has gathered 153,000 signatures on its petition. it asks apple to shine a spotlight on working conditions in the chinese factories and make the finings public. another petition is asking apple to make the iphone 5 ethically. that online effort has $35,000 signatures so far. our time is 6:20. wells fargo bank has one particularly angry customer with a lot of money. it's the city of berkeley. they are angry with the banks role and may cut ties with wells fargo and look for a socially minded institution. wells fargo holds more than $300 million in the city assets.

>> i think they have certainly done a lot of good things but like i said i think it hails in comparison to the pretty irresponsible lending practices they were involved in which have lead to a large number of foreclosures in berkeley and throughout the east bay. the city of berkeley has been doing business with wells fargo since 2004. the city's multimillion dollar account could shift to a smaller institution. 6:21. and a boot camp in agricultural. why some soldiers are trading in their guns for farming tools as they prepare for deployment. also work on the devil slide tunnel is almost done. the step being taken today and when commuters can expect to start using that tunnel. good morning, westbound 237 that traffic is looking pretty good as you cross 880. we'll tell you more coming up. good morning, right now traffic is moving along relatively well here on highway 24 getting up to the caldecott tunnel. another update straight ahead. later this morning crews will start pouring cement for california's first highway tunnel in nearly 50 years. work ons devil slide tunnel has been ongoing since september of 2007. now cal trans crews say all the

digging is done. the arch bridges are complete and by the end of this week the concrete roadways will also be finished. they say delivers should be able to move that tunnel in november or december of this year. a memorial service is being held for the minnesota couple in that cruise ship disaster. yesterday the search of the wreckage was called off because of a danger to rescue workers. they are disheartened to hear the news but they understand and accept the decision. our time is 6:25 cal train needs money and the money could come from residence whether you ride the train or not. right now 86 trains carry about 45,000 people to work every day. the system costs $100 million a year to operate and cal train has no dedicating funding source. they have enough money until

2014. one solution is a sales tax hike being proposed by a grass roots group called friends of cal train. right now the proposal would only effect san mateo county residence but could expand to san francisco and santa clara. cal train say there is is other options to consider first but a tax hike is not off the stable. a report out today afghan soldiers routinely attack american troops. military commanders will deliver their findings to the house armed services committee today. the number one reason for the attacks was personal and not terror related but the second most common was insurgents posing as friendly afghan soldiers. a marine unit is getting a crash course in afghanistan. the week long program is taught

gastro enriotries is highly contagious. we are tole that all sporting events have been canceled. but classes will resume here at the school tomorrow morning. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. right now east bay m.u.d. crews are working to fix a water main break in oakland. and ktvu channel 2 reporter noelle walker is on the screen with what crews are saying about the break. >> reporter: to give you your barings right behind me is the 5 # 0 freeway. in front of that you can see where the crews are working on this water main break. they have been digging the hole bigger and bigger. and now finally have just jumped in to try to get some of that work done in the 300 block of mccarthur is closed. the broken water main flooded the street here this morning. about 11 customers are without

water. that doesn't mean 11 families or homes. of those 11 at least one of them is a condo complex or apartment complex. so there are multiple units within those customers that are effected. now the digging started a couple hours ago this morning they had some trouble finding the source of this leak. and it appears again that they have just started to jump into that hole and do the real grunt work that needs to be done this morning. it is i'm going to tell you fairly loud operation. anybody that lives along the 300 block of mccarthur boulevard is probably not getting a great night or a great morning sleep. and then we just saw a woman a couple minutes ago in her pajamas two to move her car. that was one of the issues they had here this morning. there are cars parked along this road as they can be. not expecting a water main break. she was moving her car so they

could have easier access to try and get this problem taken care of. these 11 customers along the 300 block of mccarthur avenue or mccarthur boulevard are going to be without water for probably the next 3-4 hours. so early morning shower probably out of the question. let's head over to sal to see how the traffic is impacted. sal. >> noelle thank you very much. mccarthur boulevard there is more of a residential street. that is where we get lucky. a lot of people like to use it to cut around to 580. the best way to do is it stay on santa clara avenue. you can be on the other side of 580. mccarthur goes down to grand to get you to that lake shore area. stay off of mccarthur. you can probably just go down to some of the other streets. grand avenue and looking here at the map harrison street. just get around the problem there. 580 is also nearby. this is not in any way effecting that freeway.

let's take a look at 237 westbound. you can see some slow traffic already building on the way to sunnyvale. and this mornings commute is looking pretty good at the bay bridge toll plaza for what time of the mornings morning. it will be a cloudy most of the morning afternoon. the front doesn't have much going for it. it has light snow up in tahoe and truckee. cloudy and cool. drizzle. light rain in the morning. temperatures in the 40s. we'll end up with temperatures in the 50s probably for many. clearing a little bit later on today. but upper 50s, low 60s and a 46- 49. north bay, peninsula, coast, bay, inland. doesn't matter. the cloud cover and fog keeping things held in check here. more reports of fog than any

rain. system scoots out of here rather fast. it's not a big guy high pressure system. we'll have night morning fog and temperatures with more sunshine. the temperatures will come up a little bit. cloudy mt. morning and then sun. upper 50s, low 60s. watch out for some of that drizzle. the system is moving through. the cloud cover will hang around for awhile. that's why we won't have much in the way of warm temps. mostly cloudy to cloudy. fog will be us nights and mornings. it looks like sunny to mostly sunny and warmer as we head into friday and the weekend. 6:36. today is the state department of water resources will conduct its second snow survey of the year. take a look at video from the first survey. this was done in the beginning of january. during that survey one seventh of an inch of water content was measured. that is the smallest snow pack since 1930s. today's survey may provide similar results. it has been a very dry winter.

the state is still benefiting from all the snow and rain from last year. this morning president obama will outline a plan to allow all homeowners to refinance their mortgages at lower interest rates. even if they are under water. president is going to follow up on a proposal he made in his state of the union speech. the plan could save the average borrower about $3,000 a year. it would be paid for by is a sea on large banks. after his big victory in the florida primary mitt romney joins the other candidates in heading to states like minnesota and nevada with upcoming caucuses. sandra endo is with the candidates. >> reporter: it was a double digit win for mitt romney here in florida. he garnered 46% of the vote but despite the decisive victory, dave, still the candidates in

the race the pack is as it stands. four men going to west to nevada and other primary states. so certainly this heated campaign is far from over. dave. >> quick question as they move ahead. which states seem to be easier or mored a venn teenagous for myth romney and newt gingrich? just speaking of those two. >> reporter: certainly romney wants to use his momentum. he wants to solidify his status as a front runner going forward. he has 84 delegates. but none of the candidates have near the 10% of the 11,044 delegates needed. now in february a lot of the contests will favor romney when you are talking about nevada coming up on saturday. that is a large mormon

welcome back. here's a quick look at the top stories we are following for you right now. a flu outreakbreak has shut down one of san francisco's best known high schools. today's closure comes after 140 students became sick at saint ignatius high school. right now east bay mud crews are digging up part of an oakland street. they are fixing a broken water main. this is all happening on

mccarthur boulevard. all four republican presidential candidates are campaigning in nevada today. this is after mitt romney had a big victory in the florida primary. nevada and maine hold their caucuses this saturday. the new york stock exchange opened less than 15 minutes ago. but it will be months before investors can buy shares of facebook. but the social networking giant is expected to take a major step in becoming a major company. christien kafton live outside one of san francisco's biggest brokerage firms. >> reporter: it could be a couple months before we find out how much wall street likes as in likes facebook. they are getting numerous reports that facebook will file its paper work for that initial public offering. that would put it here on the big board of publicly traded

companies. analystst estimate it could raise as much as $10 billion. now investment experts say just because facebook is going public, that doesn't mean the public will be able to share in the profits right away. initially only large investors with preexisting relationships will be able to buy facebook stocks. investors we -- they will add it to their portfolio. >> facebook looks like it's going to last. so i don't know as far as the amount of money i would put into it or how long i would stay. but it looks like a strong investment. >> now if facebook does file its paper work today you could expect to see that ipo in april or may. that stock price would be somewhere in the $35-40 range. official layoff notices go

out today for dozens of oakland city employees. oakland city council voted to eolipile more than 100 jobs. 81 of which are filled. union groups they packed into city hall last night voicing their objections. however there were no major disruptions like last years meeting. the city cut $28 million out of the budget to offset the losses in state redevelopment money. >> they have real deep pockets. >> you have taken 100% cut in your salaries. because half of your salaries are paid out of the redevelopment agency. >> the city of oakland sent out thousands of layoff notices. most of those will be rescinded. here is some of the areas that will be cut. many jobs in the economic development and public works

will be eliminated. several departments will be merged including parks and recreations and human services. they will also sell a fire station for extra cash. there will not be any cuts to popular programs such as the zoo. and children's fairyland. for the first time in five years the county does knot plan any general budget -- does not plan any general budget cuts. there may be money left over to rehire loss deputies. the funds come from recent labor deals. time is 6:46. high school students could have a larger time when it comes to devastating. coming up for you at 7:06 the reasons behind that decision plus some of the reactions from parents and educators.

6:46. we started out with wet roads this morning we had the water main break. sal has been busy. how are things looking at. >> we are looking at an improve with them. that is -- it's a little wet from overmigraine. you will see slow traffic here and there. this mornings commute will be okay on north and southbound interstate 80. looking at the east shore freeway the east shore is fine. when you -- we're not seeing a loft of crashes. there is a new crash reported southbound 880 at stevenson. we are trying to find out more about that. that is reportedly in one of the lanes. let's go to steve. >> thank you. a very good morning.

we have low clouds around. fog and drizzle. it's a weak little system. and michael has picked up a whopping .04. there is not much to this. our system will leave behind a lot of low clouds. it will a chowy morning afternoon. slow clearing. the system is not that strong. it is leaving behind a lot of low clouds. i think they will be tough to budge. fog, drizzle and mostly cloudy. a lot of cloud cover holding on for the morning hours. forecast he lines have this system today. after that we're done with any rain until next tuesday. tomorrow morning fog, sunny and warmer. the weekend looks good. mostly sunny. it will be a little warmer. not a lot. 40s though. everyone is really close. 46 to 49 degrees. they have been stuck for the longest time due to that weak front going by. the system is on its way out of

standards. video showed officer john hargraves covering his name plate during an occupy protest november it'd. he hid his name to protect himself and his family from protestors who had threatened other officers. the judge ruled he seriously violated the court approved conduct standards for oakland police. that judge is now deciding whether to hold the officer in contempt. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is not giving up his efforts to see his wife and son. he will go back to court on friday top get the judge to lift the stay away order. it prohibits him from having contact with his wife eliana lopez and their two-year-old son. a judge imposed the order january 17nd. it's currently in effect until the end of his trial which will begin in three weeks. it ignited a national debate over police force. uc berkeley police repeatedly
