complete bay area news coverage continues, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. testimony today in san francisco in the trial of the suspect accused of gunning down a man and his two sons. on the stand a gang member in prison testifying what he used to do with him. 9 news reporter rob roth is here now with that and the three letter word the attorney used to describe today's witness. >> reporter: a convicted member of the ms-13 gang took the stand and testified he was also a member of that gang. >> reporter: inside this courtroom he described gang rituals and testified they would hunt together for rival gang members. the sig finance for the

prosecution -- >> he has knowledge of the gang and there is an allegation she member. >> reporter: he was the key witness in a separate case where he testified against other gang members. he said he hopes by testifying he will get a lighter sentence for gang activity convictions. outside court his attorney didn't mince words. >> a rat is a rat. >> some of his character to be used as a witness, it is disgusting. >> reporter: he is charged with killing a man and his two sons who were driving home in 2008. the prosecution contends he mistook them for rival gang members. they claim the passenger killed them. he testified he helped initiate him into the gang and the two once got arrested together. quote, we were going to do something with a gun but we got

caught. the defense says he left the gang before they were killed. >> we admitted he was a gang member. he hasn't been a gang member for a number of years. >> reporter: the trial is expected to last two more months. the district attorney is not seeking the death penality. the most he could get is life in prison without patrol. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. robberies on and near the cal campus. 9 robberies since the first of the year. six in one week within four blocks of campus. most have been late at night but a few have been during the day. last week someone hit a woman and robbed her at 4:00 p.m. police are trying to determine if there is a connection between the robberies. >> some of the descriptions are similar. i don't believe this -- all of them were committed by the same

news. police are looking for a suspect in burglaries. investigators say they robbed two business in downtown. the thieves gained access to the businesses through the roof and took cash and equipment. one of the businesses was the grill and we are working to confirm the second business hit. jackie spear wants to know if a national park ranger used excessive force when she tased a man. the man was talking the dogs on sunday. police officials -- park officials say he was in violation of park rules and hit with a taser after he gave a false name and refused orders to remain at the scene. spears is calling for an independent investigator to look into the accident. a soccer riot yesterday

killed 74 people in egypt. they blame police for not preventing the riot. fans attacked supporters of the other. protesters say it was because the fans belong to the group who were the most aggressive of the revolutionaries. survivors of the riot describe it as nightmarish. some of the victims were crushed to death. one police officer is among the
