it's cold. it will be partly cloudy here in the morning and mostly sunny later on. highs today upper 50s and low to mid 60s. here is sal. traffic is moving once again on the bay bridge after an early morning accident shut down three lanes. it happened after a disabled car hit an suv. toppling the suv on its side. two people were rushed to the hospital as you can see there was quite a bit of activity early this morning on the bridge. right now on the san mateo bridge. you can see traffic looks good all the way out to the peninsula. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. the violence in oakland continues this morning as police just responded to another shooting just about an hour ago. this marks five in just about 24 hours. claudine wong joins us at the scene of the latest shooting. that is at 60th avenue. you have new video of the victim. right? >> reporter: that is right, pam. i want to give you a live look

at what is happening on the scene. police are just getting here and just working the scene for evidence. we have a bus behind us but this scene is right behind that bus. you can see now the police cars and as we can zoom in just a little bit i wanted you to focus on the car you can see with its lights on sitting there parked on the side of the street. from what we have learned the victim was in that car when she was shot. neighbors told us they heard slow shots. i watched very dark video from a neighbor you can hear the victim making audible sounds. we think the victim was conscious when he left the scene. we do have video into the ktvu newsroom of video of the victim being taken to the hospital. i want to show you that video now. what was unclear what happened here. if it was a drive by shooting. the victim again being taken to the hospital and police trying to get to the bottom of this. we have seen police putting on evidence markers across the

street. they have just put up more police tape back out here live at the scene. this area remains blocked off as police try to get to the bottom of this. they are waiting on word from the victims condition to see if he will survive this shooting. the neighbors i talked to didn't want to say much. but the gunshots were loud enough to make them up and have them out of their houses. this is early in their investigation. we will try to keep you updated. live here in oakland claudine wong. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi goes back to court at 9:00 this morning. this time he will ask a family court judge for visitation rights. he has apparently dropped efforts to see his wife. at least for now. that stay away order came after mirkarimis arrest on domestic violence charges. the sheriff has vowed he will remain in office as he fights the charges. his trial is due to begin in

three weeks. the former commander of a contra costa county drug squad will be able to travel to los angeles to appear on the dr. phil show. norman welch is out on bail facing drug and corruption charges in a federal grand jury indictment. however a judge came him permission to travel with his lawyer next week. during the talk show taping for dr. phil he will encourage law enforcement officers to get help if they are under stress. welch's attorney says he was under stress because of health issues at the time of the crimes. finally sentencing day for a man that was on the run for more than 40 years. he was scheduled to be sentenced back in 19 -69d for his -- 1969 for his role in a shootout with san francisco police. but he skipped bail and ran off to minnesota. he turned himself back in on november so face charges on assaulting a police officer. also this morning a young

fairfield mother tied to a horrible tragedy two years ago will go before a judge to ask for a new trial. 25-year-old sitardhitara -- shitara james was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. james faces a possible 20 year prison term. today her lawyer will reveal why he is asking for a new trial. 6:05. a large indoor marijuana growing has been found. this warehouse in half-moon day. it has a street value of $1.2 million. also seized 19 pounds of processed marijuana worth more than $60,000. and several guns. police made one arrest at the warehouse. he was released on $15,000 bail. and has a court appearance set for next month.

just about a half hour ago we got new -- got good news on the unemployment front. unemployment is 8.3%. that is the lowest. coming up we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with what lead up to that reduced unemployment rate. concord hotel has new owners who are promising a fresh new start. last year the red lion hotel closed its doors without notice leaving guests stranded with without rooms and dozens of hotel workers without jobs. now they have purchased the 189 million hotel for $5 million. 6:06. san francisco's metreon is getting a second life. starting today. the shopping and entertainment center has been ray can for some time now.

new this morning iranian tv says iran successfully launched a satellite into orbit early this morning. the satellite is designed to collect data on weather conditions and monofornatch -- monitor for natural disasters. they have concerns because the same technology allowing missiles to launch satellites can be used to fire war heads.

transfer five taliban prisoners from guantanamo bay. lawmakers questioned david pee tray yeah. the idea is to transfer the prisoners to a third country. republicans are against the release. the white house says no final decision has been made. 6:49. a new jobs report just out this morning shows another solid month for hiring. the labor department says 243,000 jobs were added to the payrolls in january. that pushes down our unemployment rate slightly to 8.3%. ktvu claudine wong is joining us with the details of where the new jobs are popping up. carol. >> reporter: employers went on a hiring spree in january and the gains were wide spread across many industries like retail and health care. manufacturing saw big gains. 50,000 jobs. most in a year. the unemployment rate fell for

the fifth straight month to the lowest point in three years. good news for president obama who will be at a nearby virginia fire station trying to get more streetens back to work. he wants to give grant money to communities that hire vets to work as police or firefighters. he recently spoke about needing to do more for our returning troops. >> a lot of those men and women who we celebrate on veterans day and memorial day come back and find when it comes to finding a job or getting the kind of care they need we're not always there the way we need to be. >> reporter: the unemployment rate for post 9/11 veterans 13% verses the 8% for nonveterans. live in washington carol han. happening right now the coast guard is searching for a missing man off the san mateo county coast. take a look at the map. the unidentified man left pillar point to go fishing. he never returned and the coast guard started their search at about midnight. the coast guard tells us

weather is making the search difficult right now. stay with ktvu and ktvu.com we'll bring you any developments as soon as we get them. we also have new information on the captain of that cruise ship that flipped over. italian newspapers report a woman has come forward to admit she is having an affair with captain francisco schettino and is quote in love with him. the woman said she was on the costa concordia's bridge with him. captain schettino remains under house arrest with charges related to the disaster. a 35-year-old man is in the hospital this morning after being shot in san jose or during the night. police rushed to the adora grove court in hayes avenue just after midnight. that's where they found the shooting victim. he had been shot at least once. police tell us he was not seriously hurt. san francisco police out there searching for the gunmen that shot two people in the bay

view district. it happened just before 8:00 last night on third street near oak dale avenue. police say someone shot a 17- year-old girl and 45-year-old man in their legs. that gunman reportedly escaped in a dark colored car. a former marine accused of killing four homeless men has been linked to two more deaths in southern california. anaheim police confirm that compo was involved in the killing of a woman and her son back in november. time is 6:18. a grab that opposes plans to rent out san francisco's coit tower will present signatures on monday to get -- they are considering renting out the top part of the landmark for private events. but people live nearby coit tower are fighting that. they want to limit commercial activities and private events. the group also wants more of the money from admission fees

have something to celebrate. 49ers are taking another big step forward in their driver for a -- drive for a new stadium. nfl owners have approved a $200 million loan to pay for the construction of a new stadium. the team says this is the last piece of the very complex financial puzzle to build that billion dollar stadium. city leaders in santa claire are delighted. >> this is a contribution of $200 million toward the project. the city of santa clara is not responsible for a single penny of the billion dollars for the stadium. not a single penny. >> new construction is set to begin later this year. it's expected to be open in time for the beginning of the 2015 season. football fans are converging on indianapolis for the super bowl. volunteers with science in hand greet visitors at the airport as they step off their planes.

tether street. ktvu claudine wong is there just talked to someone that heard those shots. >> reporter: that is right. we talked to at least two neighbors that heard multiple shots and the victim calling for help. you can see oakland police are out here gathering evidence and processing the scene. this area is blocked off to traffic. it appears the victim was in a car parked on the other end of the street where he was shot. i want to give you a closer look at the car in question. we don't know if the victim lived in this area or not. all we know is that around 5:00 this morning multiple shots were fired. one woman that was woken up by that gunfire told us what he heard. >> i heard five to six shots and made sure my mom was okay. we heard the guy hollering for help. it's sad. it was just real sad. >> reporter: her mother called 911 and this is video of the victim being take ton the

hospital. we do not know his condition at this hour. it's a good sign he was conscious when he left the scene. multiple people telling us they heard him yelling for help. back out here live police are still out here. we're not sure how long they will be out here. we do know they were putting up evidence markers and obviously this investigation is just beginning. live here in okay land claudine wong -- oakland claudine wong. ross mirkarimi returns to court this time he's asking to see his two-year-old son. tara moriarty joins us now from san francisco. tara. >> reporter: we are here at the civic center courthouse where ross mirkarimi will be arriving in court. he will be asking the family court to give him viz take so he can see his son.

the individual did acknowledge that the sheriff has under gone three counseling sessions since his arrest. prosecutors presented two e- mails from his wife to a neighbor. she wrote she briefly left the couples two-year-old son with his father and it became a nightmare. he was wet, vomited, and had not been fed. the sheriff hasn't been allowed to come within 100 yards of his family within two weeks. he's fighting three demeanor charges relating to domestic violence charges. he grab his wife hard enough to bruise her arm. we spoke to former san francisco da prosecutor gym hammer yesterday. we asked him what his chances were of winning his case. hammer told us some evidence text e-mails and video could get thrown out because there was a lapse of time. about 18 hours when the alleged abuse took place and when the text and pictures were taken. during that time legal experts

he says the fog in oakley is as thick as pea soup. but here in bay point it's not thick at all. it can be localized. moving along to the toll plaza area there is a little bit of a backup as you drive to the middle of the parking lot. and this morning as we look at the contra costa map the slowest traffic is in antioch. on 80 westbound and in western contra costa county it looks good. kristin says the same thing in bendwood. fog is thick. can't see 20-30 feet. there is some areas it's clear. and other locations clear and cold. clear with fog. or fog and cold. it's kind of dancing around there. yesterday the fog increased by about this time until #. we'll see if that trend continues. a few high clouds. there is a little bit of a high

dead. hundreds others injured as protest over a deadly soccer riot continue. egyptians stormed the streets last night to demonstrate against the police force. they claim officers stood by and did nothing to stop the deadly soccer riot that killed 74 people earlier this week. some protestors also say the riot -- a uc berkeley sorority is being sued by a former pledge. alleged violent hazing in the postcouple of years. the alleged hazing forced her to take medical leave from school while she dealt with physical and psychological problems. so far no response from cal or that sorority. results of separate investigations into police conduct during occupy protests at uc berkeley and uc davis are behind schedule. the berkeley is investigating a november 9th protest where

campus police used batons on students. the berkeley police review board chair says the winter break delayed the efforts to talk to students. their report is now due later this month. a report on the pepper spraying incident at uc davis is expect to be finished february 21st. the lead investigator says there was problems getting access to the officers. we are getting a lack at dramatic surveillance video of a frightening gun battle on the streets of oakland. it shows a sun of a taco truck owner and two of the men that tried to rob them. now fit-year-old omar surprised the gunmen by pulling out his own gun and fighting back. they are still recovering from wounds that they suffered during the exchange of gunfire in all police made three arrests. in alameda there were two fires just minutes apart last night. oakland crews were called in to help with the fire in a four unit building on san antonio avenue. that was about 8:45.

firefighters say it started on the second story balcony and spread to the attic. alameda crews were busy battling a fire about three blocks away on central avenue. no reports of any injuries. your time now 6:55. an oakland man is being called a hero after rescuing a disabled man from a burning apartment building. it happened yesterday on 82nd and international. james jackson was talking with friends when he said he heard a disabled man was trapped in a burning apartment. he ran to the scene, jumped a fence, and made his way up to the second story balcony but he was knocked over by a big blast. >> without thinking i jumped right back up there. because right before that blast i had his hand and he said don't let him die. and i told him i'm not. >> jackson pulled him out. he used a garden hose to douse the 65-year-old man until firefighters arrived. that man is being treated for very serious burns.
