in the peninsula. the u.s. is not releasing any information yet, only saying they are working closely with egyptian authorities to ensure the safety of the tourists. this all comes after violence continues over a deadly soccer riot. stay with us and we'll bring you any new information as we get it. it's just the latest incident of violence in oakland in the past day. a man sitting in a car was shot just after 5:00 this morning. claudine wong joins us live from 60th avenue where a tow truck took that car for evidence within the last 30 minutes. claudine? >> reporter: that's right. this is where the car was parked along tebbett street when the man was shot. i'm not sure who the victim was or why he's in the neighborhood. that's what police are trying to figure out. i want to show you video of the car in question being towed.

we have been talking to neighbor, at least a couple of them heard multiple gunshots this morning and the victim screaming for help. >> he was just yessing help! somebody help me! call 911! >> you called 911? >> yeah. my mom called right away. >> you didn't go over there -- >> no, i didn't want to go -- go over there what. if they come back. >> reporter: we don't know the victim's condition at this hour. but you are looking at video of him being unloaded at the hospital this morning. we had heard he was conscious this morning. live here in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:02. well, san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi goes back to court in about two hours. this time he will be asking a family court judge to ask allow him visitation rights to see his young son.

ktvu's tara moriarty is in san francisco with the details. >> reporter: well, a disproportionately decision and crushing, is the way to ross mirkarimi called this decision last week. now, mirkarimi has not been able to come within 100 yards of his wife or his son for at least two weeks. he's trying to get visitation to see his son. mirkarimi is fighting three misdemeanor charges relating to domestic violence stemming from a new year's eve incident when he grabbed her arm hard enough to bruise it in front of their son. the current lieutenant-governor said on a local program on thursday that news outlets are being unfair to the sheriff. he says he understands mirkarimi's frustration and that he's being picked and and

-- picked on and went on to say it's frustrating for him. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. happening right now, the coast guard is searching for a missing man off the san mateo county coast. the unidentified man left pillar point to go fishing. he never returned. the coast guard started their search around midnight. the coast guard says weather is making the search difficult. stay with us. the friday-morning commute is moving slowly on the bay bridge right now. but that's after an overnight collision shut down three lanes on the upper deck. it happened just before 4:00 a.m. when a white car hit a disabled suv on the incline section of the bridge into san francisco. the force of that collision flipped the suv on to its side.

an ambulance took two people 209 hospital. the three lanes reopened to traffic just after 5:00 a.m. also overnight, a man was able to walk away after rolling her car in hayward. the crash happened around 2:00 this morning on d. street near 3rd. police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. the driver said she was tired and may have dosed off. no one was hurt. well. city of antioch is -- well, the city of antioch is considering putting a measure on the ballot for more police officers. the supporters say it would raise enough money to bring to full staffing levels. the department is allowed to hire 126 officers but right now, it can only afford 94. in order for this proposal to move ahead, it has to be approved by the city council or spopserred by a -- sponsored by a community group. foothill college is mourning the unexpected death of its football coach.

he passed away in his sleep one week ago. cause of death has not been announced. he's credited with helping the program become one of the top in northern california. a memorial service will be held at foothill college next saturday. 7:05. new this morning, we got some good news on the unemployment front. the labor department's new numbers show the unemployment rate in january fell to 8.3%. that's the lowest in nearly three years. and coming up at 7:00 15 we'll have a -- 7:15, we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom about what led to the reduced unemployment rate. a concord hotel has new owners promising a fresh new start. last year, the red lion hotel closed its doors without notice. that left guests strand without rooms and dozens of hotel workers without jobs. a new group has purchased the 189-room hotel on burnett

avenue for an estimated $5 million. they hope to reopen after three or four months after some major improvement. >> hey, sal, what's happening at the toll plaza? >> well, it's improrblged right a -- improved quite a bit. it was a little bit slow in the 6:00 hour. but now we've had some major improvement coming up to the pay gates. no major problems getting into the city. also, the morning commute looks good in san francisco. along with the 101 up to the 80 split. that traffic moves nicely. if you are driving on northbound 101, we've had some slow traffic. we had a crash right near the area -- right near the airport area near trimble avenue. i would recommend to use 280 instead, even 85 is better than 101, give yourself plenty of extra time as you drive on northbound 101. this accident has been moved to the shoulder but the damage is done. let's go to steve. a very good morning on this

mid-60s. thank you, steve. new this morning, iranian tv says iran successfully launched a satellite into orbit early this morning. the satellite is designed to collect data on weather conditions and monitor for natural disasters. iran's space program has raised concerns, though, because the same technology allowing missiles to launch satellites can also be used to fire warheads. and secretary of defense, leon panetta, says he's concerned that israel could launch an attack against iran's nuclear sites as early as this spring at a -- spring. at a security forum yesterday, the israeli foreign minister said time is running out to stop iran's nuclear ambitions. >> reporter: there was a wide understanding in the world that it is vital to prevent iran from turning nuclear and that no option should be taken off the table. today, in iran, the country's supreme leader says

iran will assist any nation or group that confronts israel. he called israel a cancer that will be cut out. time is 7:13. republicans are protesting a plan being considered by the white house to transfer five taliban prisoners out of guantanamo bay. now, lawmakers question david petraeus about it. the proposal calls for transferring the prisoners to a third country as an inter-- as an incentive for the taliban to join the peace talks in afghanistan. republicans oppose the prisoner release. the white house says no final decision has been made. this just came in, the fbi now confirming the hacker group "anonymous" intercepted a sensitive conference call between the fbi and scotland yard's cybercrime investigators. "anonymous" released a 15- minute recording of what appears to be a call about tracking down and prosecuting members. that meeting, they say, was intended for law enforcement officers only and it was

illegally obtained. also, hackers appearing to be greek, the greek justice ministry site put up a video showing a figure in the mass that's often used by "anonymous" activists complaining about harsh, austerity measures to get loans from the european union. 7:14. a new jobs report just out shows another solid month for hiring. according to the u.s. labor department, 243,000 jobs were added to the payrolls in january pushing down our unemployment rate slightly to 8.3%. carol han joins us live to explain where all of he's jobs are popping up. carol? >> reporter: tori, employers went on a hiring spree in january and the job gains were widespread across many industries like manufacturing with 50,000 jobs gained last month. hospitality and leisures added

44,000 jocks. even the badly-beaten construction sector, added 21,000 jobs. all of these gains helped the unemployment rate overall, it fell for the fifth straight month to the lowest point in nearly three years. this morning, republicans and democrats have been putting their own political spin on the numbers. >> can't we aleet agree that it's -- at least agree that it's good news, that for five months, the unemployment has fallen? >> our concern is that the unemployment rate is going down because people are giving up. >> reporter: president obama will be at a nearby virginia fire station 24 morning trying to get more -- this morning trying to get more veterans back to work. the unemployment rate right now for post-911 veterans 13%. live in washington, carol han, ktvu channel 2 news. could be the final attempt to save the marina in martinez. city leaders plan to spend $1 million to clear away layers of

the ship's bridge when the ship crashed into an island reef. if true, that would be against policy. the captain replains under house arrest for charges related to the disaster. 7:17. a former marine accused of killing four california homeless men has been connected to two more deaths in southern california. now, anaheim police confirm that o'campo was involved in the killing of a woman and her son back in october. investigators want to know in he was involved in more stabbings in that area. a judge could decide whether to keep jared loughner into a prison hospital. howeverner pleaded guilty to -- loughner pleaded guilty to 49 charges stemming from the shooting. 16 people died. 13 others were injured in that massacre. well, the superintendent of the portola valley school district has resigned amidan

investigation involving his previous employer. school officials say tim is the subject of financial irregular taris stemming from when he worked from the woodside district. portola's school board president says there's no evidence of wrongdoing. still, an independent auditor will be brought in to investigate the district's finances. volunteers with signs are greeting passengers for the super bowl. officials say 20,000 more passengers are flying in for the game. super bowl is this sunday. tens of thousands of san francisco giants' fans will flock to at&t park for the team's annual fan fest. the gates open at 10:00 a.m. more than 30 players and coaches attend signing autographs and participating in

as christien kafton tells us the doors open in about 30 minutes. is that right? >> reporter: that's right. about 30 minutes. folks have been lining up. the first person in line, this gentleman told me he's been out here since 9:30 last night getting ready to meet with the neighborhood assistance corporation of america. these folks are here looking to modify their loans. this is a nonprofit aimed at helping homeowners who are under water, the victims of predatory lending or are just strum -- are juff struggling to make their -- are just struggling to make their payment. >> i'm hoping to modify my loan. i'm upside down in it and lower my interest payment. >> reporter: organizers tell me this year they've added something new. that is assistance for people who are not looking to modify a

loan but looking to buy a loan. this event runs from today to sunday. you can see the crowd. they are big. if you want to come out, you have to have a lot of documentation for the folks here but they will certainly help people looking to modify their loans with all of that paperwork. we're live at the could you palace -- at the cow palace, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. police were called to diorde grove court and haze avenue just after midnight. that's where they saw the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. police say the man was not seriously injured. right now, they have no information about the suspects. 7:30. it's finally sentencing day for a man on the run more than 40 years. ronald bridgeforth was originally scheduled to be schedule -- originally scheduled to be sentence in 1969.

he skipped bail, ran off to michigan. that's where he lived under a false name. he turned himself in to face charges on assault of a police officer. he's now facing a possible 15- year prison. this morning a young fairfield mother tied to a horrible tragedy two years ago will go before a judge and ask for a new trial. last november, 25-year-old chatar james was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for a fire that killed her four children in an apartment fire. investigators say james and her sister left her children alone for 30 minutes before the fire started. james faces a possible 0-year prison term. today her lawyer will say why he's asking for a new trial. a large, illegal, indoor marijuana growing operation has been found in san mateo county. more than 1500 marijuana plants were seized at this warehouse in half moon bay. it has a street value of 1.2 million.

also seized 19 pounds of processed marijuana worth more than 60,000 and several guns. now, police made one arrest at the warehouse. this man was released on $15,000 bail. he has a court appearance set for next month. it is 7:31. a group that opposes plans to rent out san francisco's coit tower will present signatures on monday hoping to get the measure on the june ballot. the city is considering renting out of top level of the landmark for private events. some people who live near coit tower on telegraph hill are fighting that. they want to put a measure on the june bal low the -- ballot that would limit comal activists and -- commercial activists and private events. an oakland man is being called a hero. a fire yesterday on 82nd and international and james johnson

was talking with friends when he heard a disabled man was trapped in a burning apartment. james ran to the scene, jumped the fence and ran up to the second-story balcony. he was knocked over by a big blast. >> i was on the fire crew and i've been around some high fires. nothing like that. but i've been close to some really intense heat. it was nothing like that. >> jackson pulled the victim out and he used a guarden hose to douse the 65-year-old man until firefighters arrived. the sman being treated for serious burns but firefighters say without jackson's actions, he may have died. there were two fires in alameda last night, minutes apart. so oakland fire crews were called in to help with the fire on san antonio avenue around 8:45. firefighters say it started on the second story balcony and then spread to the attic. alameda crews were busy

fighting a fire on central avenue. no word of injuries. in pittsburg, a man rescued from his burning home is in critical condition. crews were called to a home on fairborn drive. firefighters found the victim quiet and up conscious. a pet cat -- a pet cat was also rescued. 7:33. the alameda firefighters association says it will make a donation to a local breast cancer charity instead of the susan g. komen foundation. the decision is in response to the foundation's decision to cut breast cancer screening grants to planned parenthood. alameda fire will donate to the san francisco-based breast cancer fund. meanwhile, planned parenthood hopes that komen will have a change of heart. >> and i really hope they will

front-runner position. this is interesting. historic gold nuggets valueded a more than 3 million were stolen from a northern california courthouse. burglary happened wednesday night in siskiyou county, not far from the oregon border. two men frabbed into the building, grabbed nuggets near the display lobby. investigators say they do have surveillance video. the courthouse is home an historic gold collection. and police in the north bay out there searching for the man at a gas station and -- and rob be it, there's the surveillance camera. the police say he tried to pay for gas, cigarettes and food with a stolen credit card. but the store clerk wouldn't accept it and that's when the man took off. if you have any information call petaluma police.

7:36. san francisco mayor ed lee has removed a jobs-related chafrter amendment. under the amendment a hearing before the small business commission could have been -- would have been required if the proposed legislation would show job losses. labor leaders criticized the plan saying it would give the commission too much authority. oak and san francisco have been slow to spend federal money to weatherize homes on low-income residents. so now they may have to give that money back. the oakland tribune reports the city had to set up programs from scratch and focused on apartment buildings which is more time consuming. oakland received 4 million. san francisco received 2.5 million and has completed 300 residents -- residences. the state coo decide to redistribute the funding. okay. let's help the folks get to where they need to go.

sal, can you help the people at the toll plaza? >> i can. there's been a little bit of a buildup in the last few minutes. it was clear, but now we have a backup approaching the bridge. just kind of a temporary spot there. looking at the chp list we do not have a crash reported on the bridge, not even a stall here. we're just keeping track of it or if it does, we'll let you know, san mateo bridge the same thing goes. that's a nice-looking drive. clear weather as you head to the peninsula. the morning commute has been slow in the south bay. there's been some improvement the crash at de la cruz is on -- is gone. 85 and 280 is slow. i think if you are choosing between one or the another, i say 280 is the better bet than 01. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. 30s, 40s, fog.

. the california speed rail authority paid a public relationing firm to lobby state lawmakers to approve funding for the controversial project. the problem is it was those lawmakers who appointed the rail authority members in the first place. critics call it a waistful use of tax payer funds and they say it amounts to the state spending money to lobby itself. drivers facing traffic fines can usually go to court to fight their tickets and the odds are you can beat that ticket if it came from oakland police. a judge for the city's traffic court says oakland officers

numbers for january. the unemployment rate fell to 8.3% in january. that is the lowest rate in almost 3 years. employers added 243,000 jobs. that's a lot more than economists expected. well, in just a couple of minutes from fright now, president obama will announce details of his new jobs program for military veterans. the veteran jobs core is expected to provide 20,000 jocks. most of the work will be rebuilding trails, roads and levees on public land. similar to the word done by the civilian conservation core during the -- corps during the great depression. california lieutenant- governor gavin newsom made some disparaging remarks about his boss. gavin newsom was asked if he's disappointed with governor jerry proun's cuts to higher elevation. newsom said "it's hard not to be." he went on to say that governor brown is "not the most

she was tired and may have dozed off. no one was hurt. it is 8:34. the cause of a fatal mobile home fire near watsonville is under investigation. it happened early yesterday morning. firefighters say the trailer was engulfed in flames by the time they arrived on scene. crews quickly doused the flames and then discovered a body inside the mobile home. the victim's name has not been released. 8:34. a concord hotel now has new owners promising a fresh new start. last year, the red lion hotel closed its doors without notice. that left guests there stranded with no rooms and dozens of hotel workers without jobs. a new group has purchased the 189-room hotel for an estimated $5 million. they hope to reopen in three or four months after some major improvements. 8:35. the city of antioch is considering putting a partial tax on the november ballot to

. developing news in san jose here where there's been a structure fire. this building that caught fire two-alarm response from san jose fire department. this is on the alameda. the closest street is magnolia. they have been taking traffic off the alameda which is a pretty busy area and rerouting it temporarily for a few city blocks here. the fire was reported about an hour and a half ago and again, there's still a closure on the alameda. good area to avoid. the fire department has not told us if anyone has been injured but they do say the fire is under control. at 8:46. let's go back to the desk. we're also keeping an eye

on stocks this morning. they've been signaturely higher after the january unemployment report came out early this morning. it was much higher and better than expect. unemployment is down to 8.3% on a national level. the dow is currently up 128. nasdaq is up 39. s&p is up 15. 8:46. let's get you up to date on some of the other top stories we're following right now. there's this -- the coast guard searching right now for a missing boater off the san mateo county coast. a 64-year-old san ramon man departed from pillar point yesterday but never came back. now, the man's son called the coast guard. you can see they are searching. they started searching around midnight. oakland police investigating several shootings in just over 24 hours. two men were killed. several others were hurt in five separate shootings. the latest one happened around 5:15 this morning. that's when a man was shot in his car in east oakland. so far no arrests have been made in any of those cases into

and san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi returns to court today. this time, he will go before a family court judge to ask for visitation rights to see his 2- year-old son. now, tara moriarty just received new information about the time of today's court hearing. so what do you know now, tara? >> well, the doors of the court house opened about 15 minutes ago, but we just learned that the mayor's hear something not scheduled until 1:30 this afternoon. the judge, he's a family court judge, he can actually make a determination in this case based on the paperwork alone. so we're not sure if ross is gonna show or not. now, he's been ordered to stay away from his wife and his son for at least two weeks. he can't come within 100 yards of them. the criminal court judge last week would not lift the stay away order for the wife. but today, the may -- but today, mirkarimi has filed an emergency order to have visitations with his son.
