the united states, 1.8 million people but look at this. one out of six right here in california. so what is the pulse of the golden state? >> we did see throughout 2011, steady job gains, the toll was 240,000. >> reporter: but says the former director that's only a small portion of the 1.4 million jobs lost. he said moving forward the state's biggest jobs gains are likely to tom from small business. >> the tens of thousands of new businesses starting up in 2012 in california. >> reporter: folks like book dealer rick wilkerson. >> i think a lot of people perhaps, felt betrayed by what happened with the economy, their own securities was undermined and they started to realize they could only depend on themselves. >> reporter: many customers employees of start ups. >> a lot of tech offices near here they didn't realize

affected by the foreclosures, it's affecting everybody. >> reporter: specifically kim who no longer speaks to her father. she said edith entered his life a decade ago and that's when it started and she said it still happens. >> he has picked her. he picked her all long over his own family. she is the main person and anybody who won't separate from her gets what she gets, just by association. >> reporter: they face more than 40 years in prison and owe millions of dollars in restitution. sentencing set for may 11th. >> police in oakland have yet another shooting investigation on their hands tonight. the latest happened less than three hours ago near the corner of 65th and international boulevard. police say the male was shot five or six times during a rolling shoot out that went on for several blocks. the victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

this is the 7th shooting in oakland in just the past two days and two of those were deadly. police are also investigating a mysterious death. they say a woman was found dead this afternoon in a house on 98th avenue at c street. no word on who she is or how long she was there. >> hundreds of school children took part in a parade. a parade for peace. the students marylanded in the fruitvale district to wrap up athlete schools week. >> we are celebrating service, people in our community who make a difference, groups that make a difference, and we want to promote peace in our neighborhood as well as in our city and nation. >> today's event marked the 7th yearly peace parade. >> the coast guard is searching for a crabber who

disappeared off the coast two days ago. search crews found the capsized boat belonging to the 64-year- old of san ramone today. he launched from pillar point hear bonk on wednesday in good weather. the empty boat was found this morning. >> a judge refused to lift the stay away order for two protesters. yesterday a judge issued an order to a dozen demonstrators who were among hundreds arrested last weekend during clash was police. we have photographs of the protester who have been ordered to stay away from city hall. just go to ktv.com and click on slide shows. some oakland residents say they are fed one the movement and are planning a demonstration of their own. the group stand up for oakland will gather just before noon on monday. the same day occupiers say they plan to protest. stand up oakland wants supporters to wear white to show their support for the city. >> federal approximaters have dropped their doping investigation into lance

armstrong. today's surprise announcement ends a two year probe into if he used performance enhancing drugs. the united states attorney made the decision but didn't say why. armstrong has long denied any doping. >> a fairfield woman whose three children died in a fire won't serve more jail time for her role in the deaths. she received ten years probation. she was convicted of manslaughter and child endangerment. her children and a neice died in april of 2010. it started when james and her sister left the children alone with burning candles. inmate plead guilty today to killing a fellow inmate. he stabbed edward schaffer, the man accused of killing a 9-year- old during -- while driving drunk. the plea deal gives him life without the possibility of parole but spares him the death penalty. >> the governor signed a bill designed to help with the

state's cash flow until the spring. the bill would allow the state to borrow against itself up to $865 million until tax revenues start coming in. >> pg&e is helping students in northern and central california with a launch today of a million dollars in scholarships. it'll help as many as 40 students qualify, they must show they have given back to their community or have overcome great personal challenges. the mountain view school district is asking students to pay more for lunch. they just approved the increase on full prized lunches next year. the district said the move will help off seat the rising cost of food service. >> nevada voters get their say. we are live in reno with the reason ron paul could come out ahead of one of the frontrunners. >> bay area weekend and here. a nice spring like weather patter a five day forecast with

spa the san francisco sheriff says he is crushed that a judge denied him the visitation order today so he could see his son. >> i miss my son terriblely and he misses me. >> he has not been allowed to see his wife and their son ever since being accused of domestic abuse. he is pleading not guilty to the charges. the judge set another hearing on the visitation issue for next wednesday. a trial date was set today for the lab tech accused of stealing cocaine from a san francisco police drug lab. the trial will start on june 18th on charges they on laned illegal drugs through fraud. she faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

>> the ko men organization reversed course and said it'll continue donating to planned pant hood. planned pant hood branches benefited. >> someone walked in off the street and gave them a 300- dollar check. >> a flood of support and donations after the komen foundation announced it would cut funding. >> all indications report a spike. >> reporter: they say they are still looking at the numbers for the bay area but nationwide they raised $3 million this week, ten times the amount they normally get. the public backlash led the komen foundation to reverse the decision. >> they heard what the american people felt and i think when women see their health being made political they get together. >> we are now going to be able to focus on the mission.

it it's just to get breast cancer service to low income women and political issues won't distract us. >> reporter: the firefighter's association raised $2,800 for the komen foundation and last night they voted to give that to the breast cancer fund instead. >> that was raised specifically to go toward awareness, education, and research to find a cure. we don't want that donation to be mired up in any of the political things. >> reporter: by not giving money to us they are damaging our services for low income women. >> reporter: and that was allie reporting. the director of the san francisco komen association said her group opposed the foundation's decision but fears they will pay the price any way. >> the nevada caucuses cakeoff tomorrow morning. it's the first test in the west for the republican candidates.

ken pritchett live in reno and said there could be a surprise second place finish. >> reporter: we are here at the republican head quarters in reno where they are discussing the final preparations before the cow sauce tomorrow. it's different from a primary in california. here the ground game is essential. for the better part of the day the candidates, campaigned in the las vegas area urging supporters to go to the caucus. >> these are people who are far more engaged in the process. they are willing to spend two hours on saturday morning. >> reporter: eric said that the caucus favors campaigns such as romney's and pauls that draw large crowds and rallies and have been active in nevada since 2008. >> gingrich and santorum, they may have a few staffers scattered around the state but it's just -- not going to pay off.
