their fell le protesters who have a court date this morning. this is video of the event on january 28th. a group of several hundred people during the march. in response occupy oakland are protesting a use of force. there will be a rally at frank ogawa plaza at noon. then they will march back to the courthouse at 1:00 a.m. also around noon today, a group of oakland residents and businesses call themselves, stand for oakland, they are having a silent rayly to counterdemonstrate the oakland

movement. live in oakland, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:02. overnight, in san jose, a man was shot and killed at an apartment building. paul chambers is there at the scene now with the very latest on the search for suspects. >> reporter: good morning, dave. officers are entering their 9th hour out here. you can see the crime scene cars still out there. officers are milling around. we can't get close to find out what's going on. we're trying to get additional information but what we know at this hour is around 10:15, officers got a 911 call of shots fired on blackburn avenue. officers say it appears the shooting happened in the interior court yard of this apartment. a man was shot in the parking lot of the rear of the complex.

store. apparently the bricks fell off the facade. at first, they thought it might have been some sort of an explosion. as we look further, we don't know what it is. we don't know what it really is. one of the things we know is the brick had fallen off the building here at express liquors. it's a good thing it didn't happen when people were there. these bricks, very dangerous. the fire department is on the scene along with building inspectors trying to get to the bottom of it. 13-bg9s and international -- 3th and international. it's -- 13th and international. it's not causing a huge backup but the building is damaged. it looks like the facade -- the brick exterior of the building. a little later on it was covered with more brick. we'll get to the bottom of this and have it for you later on. it look likes the bay bridge toll plaza westbound, in fact -- as said zoomed in it looked like a wood facade or background -- bub the bay bridge is backed up for about

destruction. messages suggested in messages indicated the man was going to do something final. overnight, the salt lake tribune published online fine at messages from josh powell to his cousin, nathan lee. one of them says "i guess i'm calling to say goodbye." he sads," i'm not able to go on. i'm sorry for everybody i've hurt." neighbors say the fire spread very fast. police say a contractor to the state division of child protective services was delivering powell's sons age 5 and 7. the soci worker had gone back to her car after powell smelled gasoline to

voters by 51-45%. anlists say the improving -- analysts say the improving economy is boosting numbers. among voters's concerns with romney's ability to connect with average americans. 7:15. there are four more nominating contests this week in the republican race for the white house. but as ktvu's alison burns reports, we probably won't see the same type of drama that dom napted the same race last month. >> reporter: february is looking good for mitt romney. fresh off the win in nevada, his poll numbers are strong in colorado, missouri, minnesota and maine. but the other candidates are vowing to stay in the race. rick santorum could give him a run for his money in minnesota. ron paul is the only one who has not won a contest yet but says he will. >> it's hard to say exactly when, but we have three or four caucus dates that we believe our numbers are doing good. >> reporter: the counting is over in nevada.

. in just a few hours, san jose police will talk about recent hate crimes in the city. a press conference will be held at 10:00. it comes after this man was suspected after hate crime in november. the drawing shows at least one of three men who hit a hindu man and hit him with a tequila bottle and called him a terrorist. police say the press conference is to bring awareness to the seriousness of hate crimes. roger jones is calling for fines to be reduced and to extend the fines. the onramp at 27th and northgate in oakland reportedly took in 4.2 million. police say the cameras also

store exterior has collapsed on the ground below. tara moriarty has arrived on the scene. what do we know now? >> reporter: the initial reports that came, this was some type of an explosion. but that ended up not being the case. you can see the damage right behind me where the bricks fell right onto the sidewalk. really could have hurt someone. happened around 6:15. right across the street is a firehouse. joining me live is lieutenant john farrell who happened to be working when this all happened. did you hear this happen? >> we didn't hear anything. another firefighter and i were in the apron getting ready to transfer shifts. and when a call came in for an explosion at 13th and innational, we thought it was odd. . we didn't hear anything. rather than get on the rig -- we didn't -- as we walked around the corner, we saw the entire facade had fallen off. >> reporter: what did the building inspector tell you?

>> so yeah, we call for the billing innee to come out -- engineer to come out immediately. the bricks were falling off. the engineering says based on the age of the bricks, they can get dry. >> reporter: the grout gets brittle and falls apart? >> yes. >> reporter: it's a very dangerous situation at this point? >> yes. we've marked off the entire building. the city engineer would like to keep anyone away from that brick facade until we can figure out how to remove it. had this been during the morning or afternoon when there's a lot of pedestrians, there could have easily been a fatality. >> reporter: thank you for joining us. for now, they are gonna have this section cordoned off and are not gonna have anyone near it, just in case any of those

bricks should fall off. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:32. police in oakland are investigating a series of shootings in a violent weekend and there was a fatal shooting early this weekend. it happened at 83rd and international boulevard around 1:30 a.m. police now have detained a person of interest but it's still not clear what led up to that kill. oakland police are also still looking for suspects in a drive-by shooting in broad daylight. six people were wounded on adeline. investigators placed nearly 50 evidence markers outside of the home where the shooting took place. many neighbors are becoming increasingly frustrated with the violence right outside of their home. >> i'm tired of all of this shooting stuff going on. they are spending more time on the occupy stuff instead of trying to help the kids.

>> police say five young men and one young woman were wounded in the shooting. all six victims are expected to survive. in all, there were ten shootings in one 24-hour period in oakland. and police in santa rosa are investigating a homicide. officers were -- were called to a shooting on clark street near e street just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon. 61-year-old carol marie brooks was found with a gunshot wound and she later died at the hospital. witnesses say they saw a man driving off in a silver car. no arrests have been made. your time is 7:34. right now, public works crews in oakland are still trying to cap off an overnight later -- water main break in the fruit veil district. nowsm, this was the scene on 39th avenue shortly after midnight. you can see a small river gushing in the streets after the water main broke. it did not damage any homes. crews have been there for the last few hours, trying to fix

the water main and then clean up the mess. they may be out there for several more hours. the chp investigating this fiery exwrit crash in from mann. it happened around 12:30 on southbound 880 near highway 84. investigators say a speeding car burst into flames and burst over -- rolled over several times. the freeway had to be shut down for a while. the both the driver and passenger refused medical treatment at scene and no other cars were involved. 7:35. police in concord are investigating the death of a woman in her own driveway. it happened yesterday morning outside the victim's home on pembrook drive. investigators say the 69-year- old woman was standing in her drive drive way when a car -- in her drivewa when a car in the driveway began to roll backwards. she began to stop the car but it ran over her and she died at john muir medical center later. firefighters are closely

southbound, slow traffic behind -- beginning at a street. it's gonna remain slow to 84. on westbound 84 and westbound 29 that traffic looks good. now at 7:41. live pictures backed up for about a 15-minute wait. and the morning commute on san jose. that looks good up to highway 17. let's go to steve. a very good morning. mostly cloudy here. we have increasing clouds in advance of the system that i certainly hope brings us rain. it certainly looks like this. i'm going with it. as long as it doesn't split. in a dry year systems look good and then they fall apart. in a rain year, it's easy. go with it. as you know, it's not raining. our system is still developing right back there. it will be in here tomorrow. now, it's going to split. it will go to southern california. overnight just hoping it splits after the bay area.

we'll have mostly sunny skies by noon. already the wind is cranking up some of the higher elevations. the system has a lot going for it. i will give it that. it has also a pretty good core, the jet stream rounding the base of the low, driving it towards us. the problem is -- the challenge, it's not a problem, it's a challenge, is running into that ridge of high pressure. once this does that, it starts to weaken. but increasing clouds today. it's a very mid to warm system -- mild to warm system. as you move inland, amounts will taper off. 30s, 40s, or 50s for us on the temperatures. temperatures are starting to come up. not only the breeze helping a little bit. but the cloud cover. a north wind or a north- northeast but it's turning south-southeast, i've seen from woodacre and that wind is turning more easterly. that's a mild direction. a few sunbreaks. the system will slow down a little bit. it's a tuesday system by every

. good morningp welcome back to "mornings on 2" -- good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. in 30 minutes from now, occupy protesters will return to the city's downtown area. ktvu's allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: this is supposed to be a day of action and demonstrations starting in about a half-hour from an hour from now at the wiley courthouse. that's where a group of occupy protesters are supposed to gather here. i just spoke to a representative from the occupy media team. he says he cities about 100 or so people will come to the courthouse at 9:00 to protest some of their fellow protesters who have been arrested in the frank ogawa plaza. he estimates there are about 12 people who have court dates for various things, like obstruction and assault on a police officer. the plan is to pack the courtroom to support those protesters facing charges.

now today's protesters gathering is part of a day of action. and that's in response to a protest that happened last weekend. more than 400 people were arrested during an occupy oakland demonstration on january 28th. protesters and police clash and tear gas and flash bangs were used to control the crowd. it's in response to that that occupy oakland protesters are calling for a rally against the police brutality. after that, there will be a rally at noon at frank ogawa plaza and then they plan to march back to the courthouse around noon and oakland businesses and residents calling themselves stand for oakland are going to have what they call a silent rally to counterdemonstrate against the events today. live in oakland, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. one minute after 8:00. san jose police are investigating after overnight fatal shooting at an apartment

complex. ktvu's paul chambers is in on the scene in san jose. paul, neighbors tell you they are surprised by the violence. >> reporter: that's right. neighbors say this is a pretty quiet neighborhood. within the last few minutes, police cleared the scene. i cannot tell you what happened here. bebetween those two build -- between those two buildings is where this happened. we're getting little information but this is what we know -- around 10:15 last night, officers got a 911 call of shot irfood in the area of -- shots fired in the area of the 300 of black-- blackburn avenue. officers found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound. the victim was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. his identity is being held at this time, as they are notifying the next of kin.

freeway. both the driver and the passenger refused medical treatment at the scene. no other cars were involved. and there were some tense moments at an oakland apartment complex after a truck crashed into the building and burst into flames. it happened at international and havens court boulevards. everyone got out safely. the driver of the truck ran away but he was later arrested by oakland police. oakland police investigating several shootings in a violent week. just hours ago there was a fatal shooting about 1:30. police have detained a person of interest but still not clear what led up to the killing. oakland police still looking for suspects in a drive-by shooting in broad daylight. six young people were rounded -- wounded on adeline on 33rd

near west oakland. that caused a disturbing crime scene. investigators placed almost 50 evidence markers outside the home where the shooting occurred. a lot of neighbors are becoming increasingly frustrated with the violence right outside of their doors. >> i'm tired of all of the shooting stuff going on. they are spending a lot of time on this occupy stuff instead of trying to kep the -- to help the kids. >> police say five young men and one young woman were wounded in the shooting. all are expected to survive. there were ten shootings in one 24-hour period in the city of oakland. police in santa rosa investigating a homicide. police were called to a shooting on mark streit near e street just after 2:00 yesterday afternoon. the 60-year-old woman, broo, was found with a -- brooks, was found with a gunshot wound.

she later died at the hospital. police say the suspect drove off in a silver car. but no arrests have been made yet. the farmers market may have to move this summer. they say they've not been able to afford the 140% rent increase to use the hall's parking lot. the county says the farmers market is paid a rate -- is paying a rate 75% less than what other groups would have paid in the last few years. the farmers market is a popular destination on saturdays and wednesday all year long. the city of alameda says new rules will level the playing field between the trucks and local restaurants. under the rules, vendors will have to get a local vendors as license. the city has designated five off-street locations for food, truck venners to set up.

8:38. sal, i know you've been keeping an eye on the san mateo bring. everybody behaving them -- bridge. everybody behaving themselves? >> yes. we've opinion looking at all of the bridges but recently the san mateo and the dumbarton. i wanted to show you what it looked like here on westbound 92 -- guess we're gonna start here. i'm starting with maps. that's my fault. northbound 280, that traffic is slow. you can see it's slowing down into cupertino, the site of the accident, near wolfe road on the right shoulder. i would recommend using 85 as an alternative. sure, it's slow but it's mott as bad as 280 is at this point. i would say 85 is the way to go if you are in the south valley and now the san mateo bridge. there it is. likewise for the dumb bar ten bridge and no major problems. on the sunol grade we've had late-morning traffic on 84 and 680 heading into the south bay.

we'll take you back live to ktvu's allie rasmus for an update on this morning's protest in the next couple of minutes. also, a new controversy, it involves a super bowl halftime show. it was that. british singer m.i.a. flipped the bird during madonna's half-time performance at the super bowl. an estimated 110 million tv viewers were were watching at the time. and homicide investigators are investigating a deadly shooting at an apartment complex. ktvu's paul chamber has been there all morning and is back with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, dave. now, police cleared the scene about an hour ago. they started this their -- their focus at the apartment complex. that's where police spent most of the morning. we've not been able to get more information. but this is what we know -- around 10:15, officers got a 911 call of shots fired in the area of the 4300 block of

backford avenue. officers say the shooting happened in the rear. once on scene, they found a man with gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital. he died from his injuries. his identity is being confirmed by the coroner's office. police say those leaving the scene ran in separate trekses -- directions. officers say they don't have a motive and crimestoppers is offering a reward. we will tell you that police spent about nine hours before they cleared the scene. some neighbors i talked to say this is very sur prying. i -- surprising. i talked to one woman who said she's been here for 17 years and she's never seen anything like this. they did not want to go on

camera. ktvu, paul chamber. back to you. in december, the city planning commission changed lift lounges service hours. so instead of closing at 12:30 a.m., they have to close at 11:30 p.m. the commission said the lounge committed violations of its conditional-use permit. restrictions on the lounge followed several drawl -- brawls in the city's downtown air craw. tomorrow, contra costa supervisors will decide whether to move forward with a new feet to -- fee to clean storm water runoff. it would help pay for programs to meet state imposed requirements like eliminating trash from storm drains over the next decade. county residents will vote on the fee if the majority agree,

it will pass. investigators say a 69-year- old woman was staning in her driveway when a -- standing in her driveway when a car started to roll backward. she tried to stop it. but it ran over here, trapping it beneath it -- trapping her beneath it. she died later at john muir medical center. firefighters are watching for hot spots on john mare island at a warehouse. it started yesterday in a 150,000-square foot structure. the black smoke could be seen for miles across the bay. firefighters doused the flames from a distance. the cause of the fire still under investigation. 8:49. it was a wild finish to super bowl xlvi. the giants won the game but it was not decided until the final seconds. >> the game ends here! to the end zone!

super bowl title and their second since 2008. now, in massachusetts, it was a different seen as would you expect, when angry new england patriots' fans became angry after the super bowl loss. >> police in riot gear set off flash bombs on the campus of the university of massachusetts in amherst trying to disperse a crowd. officers used non-lethal ammunition to scatter the crowd. 8:51. in solano county, police in suisun city looking for the vandal blamed for a disturbing recent string of crimes. investigators say this person is shaking -- taking potshots with a pellet and bb gun. both homes are targeted. as well as residents. if you have any information about this call suisun police right away. at least 13 people are dead

. 8:54. the latest occupy oakland protest is just getting underway outside of the county courthouse. let's go to allie rasmus to find out what is happening out there. ail allie -- allie? >> reporter: we're in front of the courthouse on 17th in oakland. right now there's a group of about 40 to 50 people who have gathered out here. these are occupy oakland supporters who have gathered to support some of their fellow protesters who have been arrested in the past. you can see they've made a sign out here, asking the protested -- that the charges be dropped against those protesters. they have coffee and doughnuts out here. there are about ten people who have court dates for being arrested and we talked to one of them and he said he went to an occupy oakland event on

january 4th with his camera. he said he was unfairly arrested. >> i take one picture. a police officer comes and says do i have a press pass. i says no. then two other cops rush at me shouting back you. i back up. i said i'm backing up. please tell me where you want me to go. behind the line. behind what line? they kept running at me. they throw me moo -- they throw me in a police car and arrest me. >> reporter: now, this is video of his arrest. he said after he was arrested he spent the following hours in jail. he was charged with assaulting a police officer. he proud this to show the -- proud this to show the -- he brought this to show the judge. they will have a rally and then they will march back to the
