police out front or fights, we do not want anything. the best thing is no police involvement. so we really want to step up to the plate and be a part of the problem solving situation. >> reporter: this surveillance video of a fight, we were going to show you surveillance video of a fight, it is one reason they met. they don't want anymore bad press. they told me they will try to meet with city counsel leaders tomorrow. they invited a handful at 10:00 a.m. at one of the local bars. they have been in contact with leaders and they feel if they tell the leaders what they want, leaders will hear them and hopefully not change anything. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. the search for a suspect ended today with a man accused of killing a woman, stepping into on coming traffic.

ktvu's patty lee is live with how the story played out today. >> reporter: it started right here. this is where the gunman shot a woman who neighbors found. >> reporter: carole marie brooks was shot to death by a man police say she knew, john quincy ellis. >> i heard a loud bang. i heard a lady scream. a gun shot victim. towels over her wound. we got her to sit down and we called the police and flagged down an ambulance. >> reporter: neighbors heard a gun shot sunday afternoon. then saw the suspect running away. >> i saw a gentleman run out of the place, hop into his car, my guess he went for the highway. >> reporter: police say witnesses descriptions of the car hecheed them track him to his home town.

that is where police caught up with his this morning. >> he pulled over but wouldn't cooperate. >> reporter: instead the suspect begged police to shoot him. >> when the officers didn't shoot him, he ran into the path of a truck. he was truck and died at the scene. >> reporter: detectives are looking for clues as to why he might kill his acquaint finance. >> reporter: police say most of the detectives are working on getting search warrants for his house and car. reporting live, patty lee, ktvu channel 2 news. there is new information about a man who was shot and killed. they identified the man was ramon of san jose. police say he was shot at 10:15 p.m. last night in the parking lot of the apartment complex. he was taken to the medical

center where he died. no arrests have been made. a busy oakland police department. a man was found killed this morning. the map you are looking at shows the wave of violence that hit the city. investigators were still at this shooting this afternoon, most of the shootings happened in east oakland although it moved to west and north oakland yesterday with 7 shootings reported since yesterday. agents teamed up with oakland police today during a raid. it happened at a house at 6:00 a.m. this morning. police were on the scene. authorities say they detained one person but haven't released details as to why the home was targeted. two restaurants destroyed

last year could reopen. they have applied for permits through the city to reopen in temporary tent structures. the two establishments were destroyed along with an apartment building. the city tells ktvu permits are currently in the review process. 13 firefighters-paramedics started this week. they all took part in a badge ceremony. the fire district provides coverage for danville and san ramon. they are tired of the violence. >> reporter: two dozen people stood in protest on the steps of city hall today. they said oakland is being trashed by the demonstrators. >> they are just destroying children's art and city hall. makes no sense. >> reporter: as soon as the protest began, members "occupy oakland" started shouting at the counterprotesters. >> when you are opposing, you are going to get opposition. the counter-protesters expected confrontation. they hope to hold demonstrations weekly. they said the "occupy oakland"

arguments about same-sex marijuana a year ago but delayed a decision while the california supreme court decided on a separate issue. the issue is likely to end up at the u.s. supreme court. health officials say california can not require medi- cal payments to make co-pays. requiring patients to $3 for preferred drugs and final dollars for doctor visits. there is no legal basis for the government's request. coming up, teachers and parents plan to give governor jerry brown a run for his money, the challenge both groups are waging. a study suggests a cigarette tax could boost the state's economy. the initiative would add $1 tax to each pack of cigarettes

two wheels. ktvu's john fowler is live with the new way to get around town. john? >> reporter: a bicycle is a great way to get around san francisco. i am on one of the steepest hills in the city. and i can pedal up it with no problem at all. very easy because the bicycle has an electric motor that does most of the work. san francisco is poised to be the first city in the country to offer electric bike shared. >> reporter: driving and parking in san francisco seems to be getting worse. >> i always walk whenever i can't. always traffic congestion. >> reporter: bicycles can park anywhere but there are those hills. these folks pedal up 1 of the steeper grades. never broke a sweat. >> you are not huffing and puffing. you feel like you made it. >> reporter: they cost a couple

provide choices in tax plans. including a millionaire's tax plan. it would create a 3% tax for those who make more than a million dollars a year. the camp pain started today to gather signatures to put it on the ballot. >> our taxes only tax millions, not the average income earner. not the mother on welfare. >> the association is backing another tax plan. it is meant to bring in $10 billion a year for public schools. the governor's pension reform plan is making its way to the legislator. it needs 2/3 of the legislator to approve it. some of the changes include limiting the hours and wages for those who are retired but
