a house explodes in san francisco. what a witness saw just moments before the powerful blast. >> the mayor had several issues the past 12 months. we look at this story before she gives her state of the city address. >> and mornings on 2 begins right now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2", i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. wednesday, february 8th. two people are in the hospital after an explosion at a san francisco home. the explosion happened just after 8:00 on capital avenue in the engelside district. this morning we talked to a man who lives in the home. he says his fiancee and

12-year-old son were in the back where the explosion happened. he says they were both badly burned but are in stable condition. he says they are medical marijuana patients who grow their own marijuana which may have caused the explosion. police are still investigating the exact cause which includes the possibility of a drug lab. overnight news -- san francisco police are investigating an early morning shooting with two separate crime scenes. it happened shortly after 3:00 a.m. police say friends of the victim brought him to a hotel at 9th and howard, immediately after he was shot in the tenderloins. the victim is in his 20s, he's expected to survive. it's still not clear what led up to the gunfire. police are still looking for suspects and witnesses. a san pablo man accused of shooting at people in front of an elementary school. around 2:30 yesterday afternoon

police responded to riverside elementary school on amador street. they say 31-year-old christopher tren was wearing bowed armor and -- body armor and shooting in the air and people walking by. police say he charged at them but his body armor was resistant to their tasers. after a brief struggle officers subdued him. the mayor is getting ready to deliver her state of the city address and she's going to have a lot to talk about after a very turbulent 12 months. paul chambers is in oakland with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. that's right, she will have a lot to discuss this evening i would say. a lot of people consider the mayor a micromanagement after the dealings with the former police chief. it's her second year on the job. she made major strides when she named a new police and fire chief. since taking office she's had a lot to do to combat the city's

crime problems with the 100 block initiative and to securing grants to bring back police officers. her latest battle on what some are calling the defining moment of her term, the occupy situation, many people came out against the mayor and criticized her for her role in handling it. first it appeared she supported the protesters allowing them to camp outside city hall but then weeks later that changed when police and protesters battled it out on the city streets, officers in riot gear using rubber bullets and flash grenades to subdue the crowd. since then occupy protesters shut down the port of oakland, destroyed parts of city hall and doesn't appear the group will be giving up soon. if that was not enough some people would like to see the mayor lose her job. there's a recall effort to remove her from office. it's pretty safe to say she will discuss a lot of issues facing her and the city and of course a lot of employees had layoffs, so there's a lot of the mayor's plate. that state of the city address

will be tonight at 7:00 p.m. live outside city hall in oakland, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. firefighters in antioch quickly put out an early morning house fire that started 3:00 this morning in the 900 block of orchard lane. two people in the house woke up, were able to escape without injury. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. it's coming up on 7:04. san francisco sheriff is due back in family court in two hours. the mayor is still fighting the -- mirkarimi is fighting the order prohibiting him from seeing his child. a judge barred him from seeing his son and wife following his arrest on domestic violence charges last month. his trial is scheduled to begin in two weeks. cut news obtained court documents that show prosecutors hope to put a former girlfriend on the witness stand. christina flores said she dated him in 2007 and 2008.

she describes him as "extremely aggressive and manipulative." she also accuses him of having a volatile temper. his attorney strongly denies the woman's claims. time 7:04. will rick santorum's president race get new momentum following his sweep of all three nominating contests yesterday? he won caucuses in minnesota and colorado and the nonbinding primary in missouri. coming up for you at 7:15 the impact of santorum's sweep on the republican race. at home -- oakland reportedly has come up with a last-ditch effort to try to stop the as from moving to san jose. today's "chronicle" reports the city on the verge of putting up $3 million to work out a new plan for a new state of the art ballpark. the money reportedly would go to the designers of the lucas oil stadium in indianapolis. that was the site of sunday's super bowl game.

oakland city leaders are hoping these same designers can come up with a new stadium near the as current home at the oakland coliseum. it's 7:05. let's check with sal. >> a serious crash, someone taken away from the intersection of 5th and harrison, they say with a broken leg. we got there and the accident had been cleared. now it looks like a normal intersection. we did see some police officers, some of the motorcycle police officers were there as well. and there are flares left over. i'm happy to say though that the traffic is doing well. considering how serious it could have been the person was taken to the hospital with what they call non life-threatening injuries. so seriously injured but not life threatening. this intersection looks as it would normally. we dodged a bullet. it would be bad to have this blocked but it looks good. let's look at the westbound bay bridge. the fog has been pretty thick

here and on the span as well. if you're driving into the city watch for that. a look at highway 4, slow traffic here on highway 4, slow in bay point, on 680, also i-80 although it's not that bad here. thick fog in parts of richmond and pinole. mostly sunny after we get rid of some of this fog. some of that fog is really thick. heard from june on twitter up in middle mendocino county. they picked up some rain but she said foggy and 42. kathy says it's really foggy. there are pockets of very thick fog. the storm track, what little we had yesterday but at least brought rain to california is now moving up to northern california. crescent city, by the way, since january 1st is above average on rain. we're below. you don't have to go far to find much higher totals than that 2.63. our observer in the blossom

hill area has more than that. triple at least. we're behind, 54% for santa rosa. 43% for san francisco and only 29% for san jose. sunday evening to the north could be a little system but don't see much right now. maybe a miracle. fog, sunny and warmer. without a strong breeze fog has a great opportunity to set up shop. that's what it did. visibility to a quarter mile, 9:00, 10:00 it should start to burn off. our system yesterday left but left behind low clouds and we'll have warmer temperatures today and also tomorrow. light northerly or off-shore breeze not much but rain moves out for now, fog forming pretty rapidly. as the system moves out, high pressure builds in, i think we'll top out with upper 60s, maybe near 70. four fairfield -- 40 fairfield.

abusing students at miramonte school have been formally charged. springer was arrested last friday after police say two students accused him of fondling them. other former teacher from the same school faces 23 felony counts. and being held in lieu of $23 million bail. it's 7:16. happening now -- the transportation security administration is announcing plans to expand its prescreening security program. right now the tsa is detailing the plan that would speed up airport security lines. it allows some frequent fliers to avoid some security procedures at the airport such as removing their shoes, if they answer some personal questions ahead of time. the program was approved at limited airports earlier this month but will now expand across the country. time now 7:16. a new lunch option may arrive

soon on the grounds of hospitals and colleges in the bay area. yesterday, city supervisor scott weiner introduced legislation to lift operating restrictions on food trucks in san francisco. right now they are banned from places like sf state and kaiser hospital, but the supervisor weiner says this will provide employees and students with more food options. also new report out that shows nine out of 10 americans consume too much of that, salt. the centers for disease control identified 10 foods that make up almost half a person's sodium intake. they include breads, lunch meat, cheese and snack foods like chips. too much sodium will raise your blood pressure, it also increases a risk of heart disease and strokes. diet guidelines recommend consuming no more than a teaspoon of salt a day. it's 7:17. 16 san jose middle school students face off to find out who could make the best and

healthiest breakfast. it's part of a national competition to help students make healthier eating choices. students that come up with their own recipes and had 90 minutes to make their meals. the judges considered how the meals used grains, fruits and vegetables. students say their main goal is to make something kids like them would want to eat. >> i'm also a person that likes good food but it's time to make the right decisions with food. by this competition people are learning about more healthy stuff. >> the winning recipe is called the sweet potato sunrise burrito. it was created by 12-year-old sam cunningham and he was the national runner up in last year's contest. time now 7:18. with some of the fans at sunday's super bowl game in indianapolis, have come down with a super bug. the indiana state department of health says an unknown number of people were exposed pothe measles -- to the measles at the super

bowl village. investigators say one infected person spread the measles around the village sometime last week and there are already two other confirmed cases. the health department is expecting plenty more once the word gets around. wood-burning bans are necessary to spare the lungs of pets. that's according to veterinarians and pollution experts. they say wood smoke is a big issue for cats, dogs, even horses. they say the pets can have lung ailments like asthma, aggravated by wood smoke. we're advised to keep our pets indoors on spare the air days, as much as possible. instead of that coffee to drink, people can inhale it. it's called aeroshot, a lipstick-sized tube containing about the same amount of caffeine as a large cup of coffee. you spray it in your mouth. it's pretty popular in france. it started to sell in massachusetts and new york last

month. supporters say it's safe. doesn't contain additives and has the caffeine kick you commonly get in energy drinks. however, lawmakers want the food and drug administration to do an examination of the product and figure out if there are any side effects. 7:19. a judge rules the san quentin death row inmate can be extradited to new york. 68-year-old rodney alcala was convicted in 2010 of killing five people in orange county. his attorneys are fighting the extradition. they want more time to prepare a death penalty appeal in california. he's accused of strangling two new york women in the 1970s. alcala is known for appearing on "the dating game" tv show, a bachelorette picked him but decided not to go out with him. newly released records show governor jerry brown is more likely to allow the release of paroled killers from prison than either of the previous two governors. brown let stand 82% of the

7:23. there are now signs the obama administration may be looking for a way out of a battle with the catholic church over a new requirement that religious schools and hospitals provide access to birth control for their employees. the new ruling is part of president obama's health care reform plan. it would apply to religious hospitals like seatop medical center -- seton medical center in daly city. >> we voted to give women greater access to affordable preventive health care services including contraception. >> if religious freedom is going to mean anything in our society it has to mean that religious institutions are not forced to violate their religious beliefs when there are plenty of other pathways the government could have taken. >> recordly the white house may offer some kind of compromise soon such as a way to allow employees who work in catholic and other religious organizations to have access to birth control without violating the church's beliefs. time now 7:24.

please drive carefully and remember high beams don't work well in fog. bay bridge backed up for quite a bit. traffic also slow on the bridge. no problems on the lower deck between san francisco and oakland. this morning, if you are driving on the commute in the south bay northbound 101 is the slowest commute. northbound 280 looks pretty good. there's a crash at 17 but it's on the shoulder not causing a big delay. as we update the maps 85 northbound is slow as you drive through loss gatos which is a typical commute for this time of morning. as you just saw in the traffic pictures there, there's really thick fog. a couple of hours ago it was not the case. around 7:00, 8:00 it really thickens up. our observer said it's really thick. once we get through that and above that it will be mostly sunny, a few high clouds towards the north bay. jet stream going north. eureka and crescent city will get some rain. we get the fog after yesterday's rain which moved out but not the clouds.

more. i hope you are not swallowed up by a wave like you were once before? >> reporter: i have been hit with a wave with the high surf advisory. we're on the pacific pier. it stretches a quarter mile into the ocean so it gives you a unique perspective. as it comes, it comes crashing down and actually, this is a smaller wave, because when they crest and come it's a powerful, powerful, gorgeous site but also very dangerous. all along the pier towards the shoreline you will see signs warning people about the size of the waves today. highway surf advisory in -- high surf advisory in place until 3:00 this afternoon. lets people know, one, they can be hit by waves on the pier. and two, it does create dangerous rip currents. the waves are so big this morning that we have seen at least one man rethinking his plans. >> i thought it was going to be high but i didn't think it would be like this.

this is really dangerous. >> reporter: turning around and going back home? >> yeah, that's it. >> reporter: wait for another day. that's right. >> reporter: back live out here, in pacifica, as we are watching the water, in a little bit of a lull right now. one of the things, every time we get big waves out here certainly people start thinking what about mavericks? i did e-mail the mavericks folks this morning to ask them, whoo -- there's a wave coming over, getting a little wet, what they thought about today's wave. they said, look, the contest has not, i repeat, has not been called. certainly they watch it hour by hour. watching the tides. they want the big ones but it has to be pretty big for mavericks and they have to last because they have to get everyone involved in mavericks a 24-hour window to get here. again, expect high seas today until 3:00 this afternoon it's been booming pretty well. again, if you take a look along the pier you can see some of the fishermen along the edge walking back this way.

the fisher melbourne we talked to -- pitchermen we talked to said look, we've had enough. the waves are just too big. live in pacifica, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 7:32. overnight news -- a high- speed chase reached 90 miles an hour and ended in a crash in san mateo. it closed highway 101 for about an hour. it started after midnight in san pablo. then went through san francisco ending on the peninsula about 12:30 this morning. the officer swerved to avoid another car, lost control and rolled several times. he was taken to sanford medical center, we're told with minor injuries. the suspect will be taken into custody once released from the hospital. no word yet on what led to the pursuit. an east palo alto woman facing charges for fatally stabbing the father of her child. this is 33-year-old natisha

anderson. police say yesterday morning she stabbed charles perry iii in the leg with a steak knife. then called 911 and told the dispatcher she stabbed perry. he died at the hospital from injuries. perry's cousin said the couple had been together for five years, they have a 4-year-old son. 7:33. a 21-year-old san jose state university student accused of groping women in their dorms due back in court today. last month michael escobar pleaded not get to five misdemeanors including sexual battery. they say he groped five women. escobar was a junior studying sociology but didn't live on campus. an optician accused of shooting an sfo customs officer still behind bars this morning. the attack happened outside the victim's home in newark yesterday morning. we brought you live coverage of this story. coming up at 7:45, what we've

learned about the federal agent and the alleged gunman, plus hear from a neighbor who called 911. time now 7:34. two veteran pg & e welders now questioning their pipeline work. according to the san francisco chronicle the two welders told the public utilities commission had serious concern with what they saw while pressure testing miles of pipeline. one said -- >> he said this could jeopardize the integrity of the pipelines. this comes as the company says pressure testing on its urban pipeline system is complete now. after the deadly san bruno disaster in 2010 crews began testing natural gas pipelines. pg & e said it finished examining the 2,000 miles of

pipelines in populated areas of northern and central california. testing will now begin on the pipelines in remote areas. it's 7:35. this weekend students and colleagues will bid farewell to a distinguished north bay educator. 51-year-old sarah wadsworth died last week after an apparent ski trip. last year she won teacher of the year. the school will hold a memorial service this saturday at 1:00 p.m. a popular walnut creek bar lost an appeal to have its operating hours restored. last night the city council denied a request by lift lounge to extend the bar's hours from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the city first ordered the restrictions in december after the bar was accused of violating its conditional use permit. the bar's owners will have another chance to appeal the sanctions in 90 days. 7:36. starting this fall san

francisco retail stores won't be allowed to hand out plastic bags. the city's board of supervisors approved an expansion of the current ban that applies only to pharmacies and grocery stores. starting in october this will also include all stores. customers, you can also be charged a dime for paper and compostable bags. next year the ban will apply to all restaurant as well. another city in san mateo county is looking into a ban on sapphire -- sapphire foam food containers. redwood city could join two other counties in the ban. the city council asked its staff to come up with an ordinance that would outlaw food vendors using foam containers for takeout food. it would affect 500 redwood city businesses. 7:37. a facebook friend can sometimes mean trouble. a florida man accused of friending a defendant while serving on the jury is now facing jail time. an angry judge kicked jacob

jock off the jury in a car wreck case after finding out he had looked up the female defendant on facebook. the judge will now consider contempt of court charges at a hearing next week. baseball's all-time home run king can now keep on swinging. a judge approved barry bonds' request to keep his large collection of baseball bats. an earlier court order barred bonds from possessing any "dangerous weapons while he appeals his obstruction of justice conviction." a baseball bat is considered a dangerous weapon but the judge decided to make an exception in bonds' case. time now 7:38. construction crews working in the north bay may need a lesson in spelling. we're out there live now. we're looking at a sign along highway 101. sid is on the camera. look at him zooming in. you may notice the name of the park is misspelled.

it should say r-o-h-n-e-r-t-but it's misspelled. the transportation authority tells the press democrat they are tracking down exactly who made this spelling mistake. and the contractor is going to be responsible for replacing that sign. let's check in with sal -- speaking of traffic. it looked a little foggy. >> very foggy. as a matter of fact, we're going to show you fog on this commute. let's look at what we have now with the bay bridge toll plaza. i want to show that you traffic is backed up. the fog is going to be a major issue here. not only on the bridge but also getting into the city and driving around the bridge, driving in parts of san francisco. we did show you the north bay. i want to show you again, it's pretty foggy in sonoma county, solano county, morinne county, parts of alameda county so you get the idea here, watch for slow traffic and people slowing

down. it's going to be not as brisk getting to work today because of today's low clouds. also at san francisco international airport there are delays because of the fog. as we look at a map of the south bay, you see slow traffic on 85 from 87 heading north to saratoga, on 280 heading north to cupertino. peninsula, 101 is pretty slow from san mateo to palo alto but 280 is a pretty good alternate. remember, we're mentioning the fog, foggy in parts of san mateo county as well. good morning. foggy out there. really? yeah. some of that fog is -- now there's thin spots in spot. mark in pleasant hill said there's fog in the trees but hazy sun above. that is kind of the way it is probably the next hour or two. a lot of this will start to burn off. if you're stuck in the fog it can be lousy on the visibility. all left over from yesterday's system which made it all the way to southern california. from north-to-south the state got rain which is good.

almost all the state, i would say about 95% below average on the rain. though crescent city has been above since january so somebody's getting rain. 37 to 51 in the morning with fog. then mostly sunny, that fog may linger a little, 48 to 50 at noon. by this afternoon, 58 to 68. sunny and warmer. a little warmer, just a little. today and tomorrow, then cooling down starting friday. we'll start with the dense fog here, bay and inland, visibility zero to quarter mile. our system left behind low clouds and high humidity. a lot of moisture in the air. a little warmer though, low and mid-60s and light northerly or off-shore breeze. 52 san jose and the fog continues to come down a little. a high cloud deck now getting much lower in san jose proper.

stocks struggling for a direction this morning as investors wait to see if the euro zone political leaders would come up with a favorable resolution to the greek debt crisis. greece could go bankrupt next month if they don't come up with a solution. taking a live look at the big board now, the dow is down 20. the nasdaq up one and s&p 500 flat. a new report shows silicon valley's economy including its unemployment rate is rebounding faster than the country as a whole. the silicon valley index shows 42,000 new jobs were created in the south bay during the last year.

a dangerous situation in elsa, texas. firefighters responded to this car fire yesterday in front of the gas station. a driver said she just left the nearby fast food restaurant when her car burst into flames. the woman though escaped without injury and firefighters quickly arrived and put out the fire. time now 7:55. you have to see this, a dramatic new look at an apartment house fire in sanly row, we -- san leandro. you hear that? this is a helmet cam video of the fire on marcella street. the mother actually had to lean out of a balcony to lower her baby to a firefighter. two other children -- look at the circle there -- two other children were rescued from a bedroom upstairs. a fourth child actually jumped from a balcony, landed safely on the ground.

investigators think a mattress was just too close to a space heater and it caught fire. a memorial service will be held today for the worker killed in a construction accident in milpedas. raul zapata died when a trench collapsed and buried him alive. it was found that his employer failed for a apply for a permit to dig the trench and suspended the company's license. the memorial service begins 11:00 this morning at st. bede catholic church in hayward. facebook's recent filing for its ipo reveals the social network growth has slowed. most people expected it to slow in the u.s. and canada but growth in europe and asia is also not as rapid as in the past. facebook has said it may target china to continue its growth but admits there could be problems satisfying the chinese government's sensorship policies. a new study suggests that social media sites may be more addictive than cigarettes and

live with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. at 9:00 family court judge will let mirkarimi know if he can see his son. he's going to be asking for supervised visitation. that's what he tried to ask for last week, actually. but was denied an emergency request order. so he's back this morning along with his wife. they came here last week, friday, came to the courthouse with children's books he planned on reading to his son but never got that chance. he said he couldn't wait to see his son and wife and get back to some level of normalcy. that stay-away order issued after he was arrested on domestic violence charges last month which means he cannot go near his wife and child. his wife has said that he should be allowed to see his son, mirakarimi pleaded not guilty . meanwhile, prosecutors in a criminal court case filed paperwork asking that that a former girlfriend be able to

testify. christina flores said he was aggressive when they were dating and he was manipulative and pushed her in a fight. according to the report mirakarimi typically took out rage against her when he received bad press or had work issues. though that alleged misconduct cannot be charged now because of the statute of limitations, prosecutors say it's strikingly similar accusations against lopez, his wife. there will be an orientation process where lopez and mirkarimi will be versed about domestic violence on children and then meet with a mediator to discuss visitation. unlike other cases, they seem to be in agreement here. the judge can either accept it, reject it or modify it. we'll wait and see. tara moriarty, channel 2 news. time 8:0 3. two people in

the hospital after a san francisco house exploded. it happened just after 8:00 last night on capitol avenue in the city's engelside district. we talked to man who lives in the house. he says his fiancee and son were in the back of the house when the explosion occurred. he says they were both badly burned but are in stable condition. he says they are medical marijuana patients that grow their own marijuana. that may well have caused the explosion. police are still investigating the exact cause, that includes the possibility of a drug lab. time 8:04. overnight news -- san francisco police investigating an early morning shooting with two separate crime scenes. it happened shortly after 3:00 a.m. police say friends of the victim brought him to a hotel at 9th and howard, immediately after he was shot in the tenderlines. that victim is a man in his 20s, he's expected to

survive. still not clear what led up to the gunfire and the police are still looking for suspects as well as witnesses. it's 8:04. the oakland mayor is getting ready to deliver tonight's state of the city address and she will have a lot to talk about after a turbulent 12 months in office. paul chambers joins us live from oakland with a preview of what the mayor is expected to say. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning. whether people like the mayor or dislike her you must admit she's had a lot on her plate within the last 12 months. people call her a micromanager after she dealt with the former police chief and then there's the occupy situation. all this as she's entering her second year on the job. some are calling her defining moment as the occupy issue. the way she's hand -- handling that situation. at first the mayor seemed to support the protesters but then it changed. with officers in riot gear and flash grenades to subdue the

new time 8:06. an escaped inmate still on the loose this morning. sheriffs' deputies in santa cruz county are searching for him. 46-year-old eldridge woreiel walked weal from the detention center near watsonville yesterday afternoon. no word on why he was in jail but rountree is a minimum security prison. he may be with his girlfriend who drives a late 90s red mustang convertible. a man in jail after allegedly firing a gun outside of an elementary school. police rushed to riverside elementary school on amador street yesterday afternoon. they say 33-year-old christopher tren was wearing body armor and firing his gun at cars and people. officers say he charged at them but his body armor resisted their tasers. after a brief struggle tren was arrested. police say extra ammunition and more guns were found at his

apartment nearby. it's 8:07. bicycling is on the rise in san francisco. according to a new report the number of people riding bikes has increased 7% in the past year and 71% since 2006. about 75,000 people ride their bikes in the city each day. most of the trips are concentrated in the financial district, the mission, golden gate park and hays valley. details for this year's amgen tour. it begins may 13th in santa rosa. cyclists will include through bay area cities that include san francisco, livermore and san jose. for the first time in race history riders will climb mount diablo. organizers say it was after repeated pleas from fans and participants. the ride wraps up may 20th in los angeles. time now 8:08. the santa rosa city school board meets tonight but won't take a vote on the plan to

possibly close doyle park elementary school. the district is considering shutting down the school because of poor test scores, also declining enrollment. however, many questions still need to be answered and tonight's meeting will be used to give people more time to talk about it. a vote on the proposed cloash -- closure now set for february 22nd. state assembly speaker john perez is expected to introduce legislation today that would give two schools tuition breaks. under the proposed legislation undergrads would pay just one third of their tu wig costs if their families earn less than $150,000 a year. the $1 billion a year program would be paid for by eliminating a 2009 corporate tax break. tuition will be going up if you go to stanford in the fall. the university's board of trustees approved a 3% increase

for undergrad students, same goes for most of the school's graduate study programs. trustees say that hike will help cover the rising cost of salaries and health care costs. 8:09. the college of the redwoods received a warning notice from the accrediting commission for community and junior colleges. school officials say the school has been placed on show cause status because of planning and documentation issues. the college which is based in humboldt county has to october 15th to make changes. it will stay fully accredited during the review process. santa clara county supervisors approved funding for a new program that could provide housing for the homeless. it's a 12-month pilot program that will provide 100 housing vouchers for the chronically homeless. to qualify applicants must be disabled and have been continually living on the streets for at least a year. county officials hope to have the program up and running by april. time is 8:10.

sal, let's get you going. how are the folks in the south bay? >> it's pretty slow there though the south bay hasn't been as affected by the fog that we've been speaking of all morning long. it's overcast overbut not as foggy here. you can see traffic remains on 237 heading west. if you're driving to 101, you'll see more slow traffic on the way there. this is a look at i-880 in oakland, still a little foggy here as you drive through downtown. if you're driving on 580 it's also slow from high street as you head up to the interchange. this morning's commute has been slow in concord and bay point and pittsburg. you can see how the road sensors are red. it's slower than normal. fog may be playing a role here. we don't know -- well, no it's not. i'm looking at my highway 4 camera, it's not foggy there as well. the fog is moving around. 8:11, speaking of the man who

knows more about this, let's go to steve. >> up above it will be sunny and looks good to did g today but that fog can be slow to burn off. until then it will be foggy. some areas cold, some mild. a lot of 40s though. we had some 30s. everything is now lifting north, as far as rain goes. and the moisture left behind though is tough to burn off sometimes. so fog or clear. then warmer later today, temperatures coming up a little bit. but visibility in pockets can be zero to quarterly mile. the fog has been increasing since 6:30, 7:00. the rain moved out. i know that system yesterday didn't do much but it made it. fog has been forming. it will be back tonight and tomorrow. i think tomorrow morning it will be thicker, why? high pressure will give us warmer afternoons but as the high settlements in it takes that fog deck and smashes it on the ground. we're already starting to see signs of that. friday we'll start a little cooldown but the next two days do look warmer after the fog.

a few upper 60s. 8:16. rick santorum's victory in all three nominating contests yesterday means the republican race for the presidency is more of a tossup this morning. what does this mean? >> it has a lot of people wondering where this race goes next. a lot of people figure romney can survive and move on. for rick santorum it presents a golden opportunity for him to raise a lot more money. he's doing fundraisers today in texas. as events and fundraisers tomorrow in oklahoma as he looks ahead towards super tuesday. for newt gingrich this may have been his worst nightmare. gingrich is the one who wanted to be winning states and being the alternative to romney. instead it santorum who can go to money people in the gop and say give me money, not newt gingrich. ron paul based his strategy in doing well in the caucus states. he did finish second in minnesota last night but still

hasn't won anything. when you look at the change from 2008 to 2012 in romney's vote totals and the number of counties that he won in all three of the states last night, it's really a head-shaking result. when you look at how much romney dropped last night. >> what's next for the candidates? >> there's nothing until the 28th, the end of the month when you have a primary in arizona and one in michigan on the same day. then super tuesday is a week after that, march 6th. i think there's 10 states, big states include georgia, virginia, tennessee and ohio. those are the four main states you'll see a lot of focus on for super tuesday. look for the candidates to already go there. gingrich is in ohio today, romney is in georgia today. you'll have an awful lot of work being done ahead of the game for the next three weeks. so we have a sort of three-week run where not much will go on.

>> after the court ruling in san francisco earlier in the day, a federal appeals court declared california's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. in a 2-1 decision the justices ruled proposition 8 illegally classifies gay and lesbian couples as inferior to heterosexual couples. >> in this country we do not put basic civil rights to a vote of the people. and the court of appeals came through as the district court before it had done and said this is not america. >> of course there's always disappointment when you have judges overruling the will of the people. to protect the only institution that connects kids with moms and dads but this was totally expected. >> california's ban on same-sex marriage remains in effect until there's a final decision on this very complex and emotional issue. 8:20. opponents of gay marriage say they will immediately appeal this ruling.

glory this morning. a gorgeous site out here if you look along the pier you can see the people have come out to take pictures. really a spectacular site. certainly there is a danger though when you have these sized waves out here this morning. so there are warnings along the shore and warning people to stay back. there are dangerous rip currents associated with these waves. this is a great spot to look at this. this pier is four miles long, -- almost a quarter mile long. givers you a -- i'm told it's 40 foot from deck to ocean. so gives you an idea of just how big they are. come back this way and you can see one more crashing down. the size of the waves pretty big, shaking the pier a little bit for us. that has forced a few fishermen this morning to call it quits. >> i think he wanted to just put the pole in the water and that was it >> the pier started shaking. it was awful.

it closed the southbound lanes of highway 101, near east poplar avenue for an hour. the pursuit began after midnight no san pablo. the chase went through san francisco and ended on the peninsula at 12:30 this morning. the suspect swerved to avoid another car, lost control and rolled several times. he was taken to stanford medical center with minor injuries. he's being taken into custody once he's released from the hospital. there's no word yet on what led to the pursuit. firefighters in antioch quickly put out an early-morning house fire. the blaze broke out around 3:00 this morning on the 900 block of orchard lane. two people inside the home woke up and escaped without injury. the cause of the fire is under investigation. time is now 8:34. having a facebook friend can sometimes get you in trouble. a florida man accused of friending on the jury now faces jail time. an angry judge kicked jacob jock off the jury in a car wreck case after finding out he

had looked up the female defendant on facebook. the judge will now consider contempt of court charges in a hearing next week. baseball's all-time home run king can keep on swinging. the judge approved barry bonds' request to keep his large collection of baseball bats. an earlier court order banned barry bonds from possessing any dangerous weapons while he appeals his obstruction of justice conviction. a baseball bat is considered a dangerous weapon. however, the judge decided to make an exception in the case of bonds. the city of oakland reportedly has come up with a last-ditch plan to try to stop the as from moving to san jose. today's chronicle reports the city is on the verge of putting up $3 million to work out a new plan for a ballpark. the money will go to the designers of the lucas oil stadium in indianapolis. that of course was the site of last sunday's super bowl. the city leaders hope the same designers can come up with a new plan for a ballpark at the

site of the as current home at the oakland coliseum. two veteran pg & e welders are raising questions about the company's recent pipeline work. according to the "san francisco chronicle" the two told the public utilities commission they had serious concerns with what they saw while pressure testing miles of pipeline. one of the men, marshall warland says -- >> he says this could jeopardize the integrity of the pipeline. this comes as the company announces pressure testing on is urban pipeline system is complete. after the deadly san bruno explosion in 2010 crews began testing its natural gas pipelines. the company says it's finished examining the 2,000 miles of pipelines in a populated area of northern and central california. testing will now begin on the pipelines located in more remote areas.

time now 8:36. a popular walnut creek bar lost an appeal to have its operating hours restored. last night the city council denied the request by lift lounge to extend the bar's hours from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the city first ordered the restrictions in december after the bar was accused of violating its conditional use permit. the bar's owners have another chance to appeal the sanctions in 90 days. more bikes are being stolen at bart stations. according to new information bike thefts have been increasing throughout the system by 20%. in the past six years. the walnut creek and pleasant hill stations appear to be the top targets for thieves. between 2006 and 2011 more than 430 bikes or bike parts were stolen. that's followed by the ashby and mcarthur stations in berkeley and oakland. 8:37. we want to check with sal who is telling us about big

federal agent. we first told but this story yesterday morning on the morning news. the attack happened outside the victim's newark home on mia hughes landing road. police arrested the suspect identified as dennis bagwell. a short time later during a traffic stop in union city. the 61-year-old victim worked for the customs and border protection agency. he inspected luggage and processed passengers at sfo. one of the neighbors who did not want to appear on camera called 911 after hearing a scuffle and then hearing shots. >> i heard three shots. then immediately after, two shots. so, at that point i knew i had to do something. >> no word yet on a possible motive. bagwell faces a charge of attempted murder of an off-duty federal agent. the victim was taken to eden medical center in castro valley. his family doesn't want his condition released. it's 8:48. new this morning, russian

scientists have reached a gigantic fresh water lake hidden under the ice antarctica. researchers have been drilling for more than two decades. scientists hope to find microscopic life forms that exist -- existed before the ice age. it could help in the search for life forms on other planets including saturn and mars. their icy conditions are similar to antarctica. the temperature of the ice above the lake is minus 128 degrees farenheit. the city of san francisco is moving ahead with plans to host the america's cup yacht race. a report by the city comptroller says they need to raise more money. that is not the only concern. race officials are putting up the money to upgrade old piers in return for development rights, but "the chronicle" reports there's debate over whether the deal should include pier 29. exhibition races are set to begin in august. time now 8:49. some of the fans at sunday's
