we'll have morning sun. temperatures coming down a little bit. still on the mild side toward the south and east but cooler toward the north and west. here is sal. steve, good morning. traffic is moving alistening pretty well around the bay area as we look at things. we are also investigating or chp is investigating whether alcohol played a role in an overnight crash in richmond. a man was driving on richmond park around 11:30 last night when he over corrected and went off the roadway. before the man crashed, other drivers had called 911 top report his -- to report his car swerving on the road. the driver was the only person inside the car. there is no word on his condition. chp says injuries are not considered life threatening. this is a live look at interstate 880. traffic in both directions moving along well. you can see traffic looks good in san francisco along northbound 101 approaching the

80 split. it's 4:30. let's go back to the desk. new this morning a fast moving fire at a san rafael lumberyard. it started after 2:00 this morning. paul chambers is at the scene where the fire is contained but we are hearing it could have been worse. right? >> that is correct. it's the lumberyard. whenever you deal with lumber you expect major things happen. you can see they are actually in a cleanup stage an investigation stage. i will tell you we can see the smoke from as far away as 101. the call the two alarm fire came in at 2:00 this morning. crews reported seeing 30-40- foot flames leaping into the air hen arriving on scene. in all 35 firefighters were able to have everything under control within an hour. there was limited damage to the main building thanks to an

interior system. >> we had the advantage of the sprinkler system and the firefighters working on the inside of the building. there was some extension into the building but that was controlled for the most part. that is limited to smoke and water damage. >> reporter: there wasn't anyone inside the building and no firefighters were injured as of right now. they are move into the investigation phase to figure out what caused this fire. live in san rafael i'm paul chambers. occupy protestors at uc berkeley are once again camps out this morning. ktvu tara moriarty tells us this encampment comes months after a raid by campus police. >> reporter: yeah. three months ago that happened and now we have the tents back up here. they are right on the temps of sprawl hall. about two dozen demonstrators pitched the tents around 1:00 yesterday afternoon.

protestors said we're not in any violation of campus policy. they were not occupying the tents. so officers backed off then they began to watch the protestors from the balcony. it's not clear how long the protestors plan to stay out here on the plaza. this is the same cers took down last fall. but students say they have come back because their demands about halting tuition hikes are not being addressed. at one point they had a large paper machair rush room on display. they said we're like fungi we grow back. one protestor will tell us a little bit more about the movement and how it's connected to all the occupy movements across the united states. live from berkeley i'm tara moriarty. a man died after being stabbed in san jose. investigators say someone

dropped the victim off at kaiser medical center. by the time police arrived to investigate, the man had died. they are only saying that they are looking for a black vehicle. one man says nine sheriffs deputies viciously beat him at the san francisco county jail. dower real hunter says he has the tape to prove it. a judge ordered the release of this grainy surveillance video. this was taken at the jail one year ago. it show asterubinnous while deputies were booking hunter. hunter says the deputies punched and kicked him in an unprovoked attack. it began with one deputy making sure no one else was around. >> he's going to the doors checking the doors. he looked back at him and watch out of nowhere. boom to the face. >> the threat charges were later dismissed. hunter is is now suing the city

of san francisco for excessive force. certain these videos will bolster that case. he has filed complaints about law enforcement officers in the past. now we have also learned about hunters years behind bars. ktvu news was there in 2008 when hunter was released from prison after serving seven years from a murder conviction that was overturned. a redwood city district employees are on administrative leave while the district investigates how they handled abuse allegations against a special education teacher. she is accused of slapping, kicking, and withholding food and drink from four-year-old children in her preschool class. the alleged abuse happened between december and january. but they only learned about the allegations last week. she is due in court next month. police have released a

sketch of a man wanted in a sexual assault on the stanford campus. he's described as laity -- latino. at the time of the attack he was wearing a gray baseball cap and blue jeans. he entered a female students unlocked room and climbed into her bed. she reportedly woke up to the man trying to undress her. an arraignment hearing is scheduled today for the san pablo man -- the 31-year-old christopher trend fired at cars and several people on tuesday. no one was hurt. but the understand accident prompted a lock down at river side elementary school. they had trouble subduing trend because he was wearing body armor. time is 4:36. accused serial killer joseph naso is due back in court at

9:00. he is scheduled to formerly enter a plea of killing four women in crimes dating back to the 1970s. he could also learn his trial date. the 78-year-old reno man is acting as his own attorney. the judge ruled there is enough evidence to try him for the deaths of the four women. investigators believe naso may be responsible for two other killings. the days may be numbered for two oakland hotels that have been long-time hubs of prostitution. they will ask a court to shut down the national lodge on international boulevard. a case against the economy on east 12th street will be heard next week. police and neighbors say prostitution and criminal activity is ongoing at both hotels. they want both businesses shut down for one year which is the maximum penalty. during his state of the city speech, san jose mayor chuck reid said 2012 would be a

year of hope, optimism and recovery for san jose. >> the steps we have already taken combined with the steps you will take by the end of june. will allow us to reduce the cost of retirement benefits. begin to restore services at long last. >> but several city unions are accusing the mayor of ethic violations. they protested outside san jose civic auditorium last month. >> i think he has exaggerated it in order to declare a fiscal state of emergency to say there is a massive need for a complete pension overhaul. >> that was last night. unions say members took pay cuts or early retirement because mayor reid had said retirement costs would be $650 million by 2015. the projection now is $430 million. he said numbers were based on a

eating the meat of animals with mad cow disease. one of the cases is definitely not related to mad cow disease. time is 4:45. a roman catholic broadcasting network is suing the obama administration over the new mandate that religious organizations offer their workers birth control coverage. the ewtn global catholic network says the policy is unconstitutional because it would require the broadcaster to violate church principals. it employs 343 people. lawsuits to block the birth control has been filed by a catholic college. in a republican campaign for president rick santorum is moving up. that is after his victories in colorado, minnesota, and missouri. shows mitt romney still in front with 36% of the vote.

santorum is tied at 20% with newt gingrich who's numbers have been declining. ron paul has 10%. california democrats gather this weekend in san diego for their annual state party convention. this is video from last years convention. california terrors say among their priorities this election year are reelecting president obama and senator dianne feinstein and pushing to regain control of the house of representatives. a big rig driver is in jail accused in a suspected road rage incident on the bay bridge. the chp says the big rig driver threw a large metal object at a veterans affair van. now the object shattered the van's windows but the van driver was not hurt. kenneth thinks he attacked him because he refused to go over the speed limit. >> trucker comes along tailgating me. and gives me the finger.

year-old steven to castro valley. they were attempting to take moore into custody when he pinned one of the officers -- that's when another berkeley police officer opened fire on moore. moore is in the hospital in critical condition. investigators say they found a half a pound of cocaine in a home a few blocks from where the shooting happened. the danville police department has a new tool to fight crime around town. eight patrol cars and two motorcycles are outfitted with cameras that are attached to mini monitors. they are primarily used during traffic stops. police say the video can also be used as a training tool for officers. >> you get a very detailed picture at night. and with the zoom it can zoom out pretty long way. pick up license plates. >> now once officers return to the station video is

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. a 2.6 grade point average in drug use. those are some of the things revealed in an fbi background check on apple cofounder steve jobs. the report was compiled in 1991 when president bush was considering opponenting jobs to his expert council. some describe jobs ooze a man of power that distorts reality to achieve what he wants. the annual outside lands festival in san francisco is turning out to be a very profitable event for the city. a new report reveals that the festival brought in more than $60 million last year alone. 180,000 people attended last year. more than 70% of those came from out of town. the report comes ahead of a

meeting next week on the traffic and noise impacts of large festivals in golden gate park. san francisco's chinese new year parade is one day away. ktvu will carry the parade live as always. we are given special access yesterday as crews put the finishing touches on dozens of floats. take a look. gorgeous. this is the year of the dragon. it's featured heavily. it's extra special this year. the parade master float builder says dragons are hard top create and that was one of the difficulties crews had to deal with. >> we got hit by a series of rainstorms. it's half outside and half inside. many of the floats we had to build three times because rainstorms came in. >> despite the set backs, thomas says crews are day and a half ahead of schedule. and that has left it to at sound to the floats. the chinese new years parade is
